    Per the engineer at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle.... Kurt Cobain used the sm 57 when recording vocals on many songs due to his power and style of songs. I was there for an artist with a similar vocal style and went and got Kurt's microphone to get the best from my friend's vocals. The results were fire 🔥. I was surprised that the sm57 replaced the expensive Neumann mic.

      Why are there such wide ranges of prices on the internet? Are there a lot of clones from China or whatever??

    I use both religiously😭 both can literally do anything, though I do like the 57 for cab micing. But I use the 58 here and there to mic my acoustic, and use the 57 (with a windscreen) for vocals

    I have both of these and there's not much difference between them in terms of frequency response in my experience aside those caused by the obvious difference in head shape. They even have the exact same diaphragm and internals.
    I'll use a sm58 for miking up an amp just as easy, obviously singing up close on a 57 would be a lot of hard S sounds and wind noises but it's basically the same microphone in a different jacket.
    I also own the so called "upgraded" version the 58A beta with the wider diaphragm ..... which is supposed to be sooooo much better for vocals but I prefer the SM58 by a landslide. Much more balanced i.m.o.

    I have both of them. I use the SM57 to record the snare side of my drum. Having a mic on both the top and the bottom is a great way to record your snare drum. I use the SM58 for vocals. However, I am not a very good vocalist, but I have fun.!
    Thank you Sweetwater!

      They are exactly the same mic in slightly different housing. SM57 + pop filter is perfect for vocals

    The only differences between the two mics is the windscreen. That is the ONLY difference. The difference in the FR is entirely due to the windscreen. This guy has no idea what he's talking about - he's just reading a script.

      According to Shure, they are identical except for the ball grille on the 58.

      Exactly. And this joker represents Sweetwater who sells these mics. I guess since these 2 mics are the same price and are identical according to Shure, they have to make up some stuff to sell 2 mics instead of 1 for everything.

    My friend used the 58 for recording his amp live when we record. Sounded pretty good to me. What would be the main difference in using the 57 for that instead? Like how would it be better

  • @Huliwig
    @Huliwig Год назад +4

    They are both the same mic sir.. the only difference is the grille. Here's a direct quote from shure's website:
    "The 57 and 58 microphones are actually based on the same cartridge design. The main difference is in the grille."

    I refuse to use 57’s if possible lol… nothing wrong with them, it’s just the utility mic of ages. Like stock sound so to speak. Not very interesting to me.
