“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”
-Brian Eno
Brian Eno is the man
I don't think anyone will ever lust after "CD distortion"... the quality limitations are inaudible. Likewise with "digital video" beyond a certain era/bitrate. The rest makes sense though. Failure is fucking great. I would definitely recommend trying out an LSDJ cart on an original gameboy, if you're into the 8-bit vibe. Very fun.
@@naught101 i mean back then (1996) dithering wasn’t so good. I’m not sure what he meant though.
@@naught101 alot of hexd music used alot of bitcrushing effects to create a hazy soundscape to recall old low quality mp3s
Basically limewire nostalgia
Thanks for that. I always assumed Eno was a pseudo. but that has changed my mind.
you are the guy that everyone on the planet wished we lived next to.
????what??? YOU. You are not everyone.
amen
@@ZenMountain that's what I try to tell people.
Marlow's Neighbors "Yo, dawg. Can you turn that up a lil?"
Definitely not me ..Also I like his music
Isn't it funny- back in the 90s and early 2000's, hi-fi was the dream. We were always chasing hi fidelity/better sound quality.
Now we do the opposite and chase low fidelity lol. Technology got too good 😂
😂😂
Yup
People are never fully satisfied with what they have. In the other hand, maybe it's not such a bad thing. We like to explore different things :)
Over time, a technology is always defined by its defects
think ppl just got tired of the korg triton/dvd intro music/mcdonalds commercial rap sounds - its all "high quality" but has nothing "live" to the feel of the sound
And just like that, the Zoom Sampletrak is now financially out of reach
I better keep my eye on eBay, I've got one of these that I rarely use
@@weedanwine me to lol
One of the cheapest samplers ever produced is now out of reach to the affluent west lol.
300 quid is hardly out of reach , sp 303s go for over 700
Lol happened to me and the sp202.
The price just went up... 😂 😂
Brethren, this has been on my list for years. Known as the "poor mans SP-1200". I better grab one soon. As this will surely let the secret out to the masses. Keep up the DOPE works.
It's been let out
@@b33lz Maybe five years ago.
Lol everything that’s not a 1200 is a poor mans 1200
Secret has been out for ever lol
A lot of samplers are known as the "poor mans sp 1200" and they never really are
I had this sampler along with a MC303 it was my first “studio”. Hours of fun.
Thank you for the video, Marlo. Your tutorials were amazing. I learned a lot but a lot can be learned from simply watching you make beats, too. I appreciate all of your hard work and delivering all the content. You are definitely one of the best channels on RUclips. Bendiciones!
Thanks David 🙏🏼
This was my first sampler! I got it new from the old Pro Sound and Stage Lighting catalog, and was instantly one of the coolest dudes at my school. Eventually I wound up selling it, but I got another and was live looping it with a kaoss pad 3 for a while. It was a pretty dope little setup, that could fit into a backpack.
I think this machine holds up even today if you want a simple device that can play samples and add dirt to em.
Used to own 2 of these. Endless possibilities. Never been topped today. Truly Amazing devices!
Wow, you made the mistake of saying "good, cheap gear" on RUclips. One is sitting on Reverb right now for $631 dollars w/ $42 dollar shipping.
I think people need to change their approach to these kinds of videos and just talk about the gear without bringing price into the matter because gear flippers will 100% latch onto whatever piece of cheap gear the content creator is praising and make the market ridiculously expensive.
It's almost like how whenever JHS Pedals releases a video on some random "can be found anywhere for less than $30" pedal, the price automatically shoots up over $100.
Yea only saw a few on ebay and they were $400-$500
The intro beat, wahhhh :D so good. Made me happy today
Have 3 of them!
Use source while chopping to fine tune chops. Copy sample to all 8 pads to have NON DESTRUCTIVE chopping!
Have fun Bro
Thanks man, I like it too
All the 90s Zoom stuff is great. The 500-series (505, 507, 509, etc.) pedals are great.
I've had mine for about 16 years now. Haven't given it much love lately... I never bothered to play with its sequencer- I just played the pads like drums, and did everything else on the fly...but I think now I'll control the sampletrak with another device via midi, and/or play samples that I make on the 224 into other samplers. It is great for lofi stuff, sure, but I love it for the capability it allows me to trim the start and end points of a sample: with numerical precision, by bpm, or in accordance with my own ear/rhythmic ability. It would be nice if it had dynamics... and maybe something other than smart media... wtf zoom? They fell off not making an updated sampletrak, but eh... It's good at what it does.

Damnit, more fuel to raise the prices more 🤦🏽♂️. My only con for this vid. Great content as usual Marlo ✊🏽.
YESSSS! my first "hardware" piece, absolutely loved it.
fus ro da!!!
I still have mine! Such a dope little machine.
Love my Sampletrak, glad I bought one before they're hard to find and the price jumps
Always had my eye on this bit of gear. Need to start getting serious about picking one up it looks dope!
Would love to see some sampltrak content from the 404 king 🔥
I love my Boss sampler, especially the effects section.
Thank you for this video. :)
I got mine for 60 bucks about 10 years ago. Its my favorite sampler I've had (I've had the 202, 303 and 404). It goes deep. There are a lot of peculiarities and personality quirks to it, and a lot of unintended tricks that I am still figuring out. The only thing I wish it had was portability and better build quality. Thanks for spreading the gospel of dirt. Best wishes and dirty dishes.
It’s like an analogy for how God wanted experience himself and split into billions of individual souls that are all trying to find there way back to the source
if you still have your sampletrak, you should def look into buying a ripcord from myvolts. the sampletrak takes the AA927MS cord. get yourself that cable and a portable battery and bang, portable sampletrak.
Vintage samplers and drum machines are increasing in value b/c computers and software will not be able to capture the true 'hardware' feel and sound...add in the mind and hands of a creative beatmaker, and these classic devices achieve a timeless purpose.
Can you play samples chromatically with a midi keyboard? Looking to sample presets from a Fizmo since I can't afford to buy one. :D
This paired with my mpc 500 would be a dope combo, gotta get one soon
I've been looking at getting one of these for a while before prices go up. I have the drum machine version of this with sounds by the Beat Kangs, which was a precursor to the "Beat Thang" groovebox back in the day.
I love mine so much I ended up buying a second one a few years ago as a backup because I knew that once the secret was out the prices would go up. I remember wanting an S950 back when they were like $200 and common on ebay but I put it off for a few years and now they're untouchable. I can def see something like that happening with this once the hype starts to build up
Your prompting me to want to buy a few of these. I had an s950 for about 200 and sold it for similar price now its like 1200 lol
I bought my s950 for £11.50 uk sold it for 350 eventually
@@leodspprince2184 Wow how is that possible lol ? Did you buy it at a car boot sale or something ?
@@natethacomposer it was ebay believe it or not around 2014, it was crazy I did have to drive 80 miles to pick it up though 😄
@@leodspprince2184 Worth the drive for sure!
I used to own one, used together with Roland MC-50MK2 sequencer and SC-88 Sound Canvas, good MIDI control if I remember, forgot about that one! thanks for sharing
I’ve found so many different no brand name devices like CD players, laserdisc players, foreign boom boxes, passive audio keyboards, tape recorders with worn down belts that have a great other worldly or unique sound effects after dubbing and sampling. Just get creative and take a chance on that cheap player or recorder you found at the thrift store save yourself hundreds of dollars and still get great noises/pitch/tones/frequencies out of them.
I paid about £195 back in 1998 for one brand new. Still have it. Was the start of something quite magic lol
what took the SP-202's place in my arsenal is my beloved PO-33. you can't sample at different sample rates though. That's what I liked on the 202, at standard mode, I noticed it would actually fatten snares. I don't know how to explain it. The price has gone too high though lately.
I’m a proud owner of 2 of them. Love them
I've got one of these... pair it with a Boss Dr202 and your in Heaven. The things you can do with this and the drums and amazing bass sounds on the DR202 gives you just about every 80s-90s Hip Hop sounds.
Reminds me of my Dr. Groove DR-202! (which of course goes with the SP-202) Would be nice if ZOOM made a modern take on this!
Had it. Liked it. Sold it. No Regrets. MPC1, 404, 404sx, and 505 work great for me. The Chorus sounded GREAT on the 224. For Lo-Fi I like the 404sx and 505. It's a great combo. The MPC1 does all the pitch shifting I need. The 202 was nice, but the 505 to me sounds very similar and it has a bunch of extra fx goodies. Didn't feel like I needed both. I hope the 404 mk2 is going to be a keeper when it comes out. Great informative video. Thanks.
i love my sampletraks. ive been using mine so long now that i couldn't imagine making music without them. never got my head around the sequencer but the simplicity of the sampling and loop/chopping makes them a perfect compliment with the tascam 414. i feel as tho the 18bit sound sits somewhere outside the bounds of lofi or hifi and instead reflects or would be analogous to the visual quality of a film camera if that makes sense. i will always cherish the st224 and always compare any new samplers to them and still havent found a compelling reason to leave them behind
Thanks a ton for the heads up!
had one of these semi recently, it sounds great.
videos like this are a catch 22, it's cool to find out about these toys but the downside is 1 year later they are now $100 more expensive
I used that sampler back in 2000 I still have it
own a Yahama DJX Keyboard, the very first ones. They have a very good sampler, it does loops and cuts, decent quality. But when you put them through the Release, decay, actually it's ADSR in a way, with the reverb and other DSP going on inside of the keyboard, you can make all kinds of electronic music with it.
I just wanna listen to that beat on repeat it’s so sick.
2 weeks ago he 1st did a video on the ST-224, and 2 weeks ago they were fairly priced online. The next sampler or piece of gear Marlow talks about you guys better just charge your credit card without even thinking about it! lol
Downside of these videos is that it can affect prices if a lot of people praise the machines.
@@mpchead 100%
This thing sounds sooooo good! Great content as always :)
Love finding equipment and testing
But this is great too, always great to find an opinion and large variety of suggestions
It wasn't made as a competitor to the 303, the SP-303 didn't come out until 2001. Maybe a competitor to the SP-808/202.
Will work nice with my Ensoniq Mirage sampler. Great video, I subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
I love the Zoom SampleTrak. I used to rock this in my home studio.
Sounds really cool!
Instrumental is dope
nice. Price is now at $500
I totally agreed with your review bro %100 the zoom sampletrak 224 is so underated competed to the boss SP series, it was my very first sampler back in the late 90,s and still use it these days. Such an amazing little unit with awesome lofi sound and great effects, Well before its time in my opinion & definitely worth picking up if you can find one?? Happy beats everyone❤👍🏼🤓
1st time I seen this sampler was TRAUMATIZE using it with some old Cuban Music sampling being done. Was hooked ever since.
Great video 👍
I love combo with ASR X
Here you speak the truth!❤
after this video the st 224 will become pretty rare and hard to get. lucky i own one in superb condition
Hey Marlow. Great video and thanks for putting us on to it. I went looking for one just now and couldn't find one anywhere for sale. As soon as I find one, I'm going to snatch it up. If anyone has one for sale, hit me up.
Sic beat! I had one back in the day and loved it. So cool to see you diving into the capabilities. It has a deep feature set.
NOTE: my ST224 had latency when being externally triggered via MIDI. This resulted in it being basically unusable in accordance with my other gear as it would be out of sync after two or three times playing the sequence. Overall, the machine sounds quite lush, but this issue (and its extremely limited MIDI settings) made me sell it eventually in order to by an MPC500. Just so you know.
Thx for info 😉😉😉 wish u all a nice sunday! 🌴🍸🎶
The 2000xl is a bit of a 1 trick pony, I like the look of this.
The pitch wheel controller is the best part of the device
Too late, the hypesters already selling them for the price of a 404. Might as well just wait for the 404 mk2!
Mine doesn't work anymore :-( I bought it new and it was my sampler for over 15 years. You can improve the sample sound quality by loading them from the card instead of sampling with the machine. Resampling is great. Also you can play your pattern and sample at the same time. Makes it great for playing in some samples with a synth or something. Also you can chop the start and end points with the wheel. Makes it very easy.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh🤫
The sb 246 was nasty.
Boss DR 5 sick
I had one of these and used it for a few drum tracks on my channel
Had that one and the matching drum machine in the '00s. Traded an Akai S-50 for it.
Love the ST-224!
Yoooo, this is the first sampler I started using and I still use it along with my MPC2500! I use the Zoom to get my effects.
I would love to see a updated video on that drum break emulation. What new techniques you figured out or what you improved on. That shit just blows my mind
I REALLY want you to try using a Pocket Operator 33 KO! Im sure you already know about it but its a $80 sampler the size and shape of a calculator.
Po33 is 100$ now. Better off buying the street fighter edition for 10$ cheaper.
@@b33lz oh wow! i got mine for $80 back in april thats wild. still super cheap for what it is imo
@@1db1db1db True indeed, I love the po33/133 fun getting ideas out.
i have the zoom and a KO, love them both, the KO is super fun and fast to work with and definitely has a lofi quality to it
I bought mine in 2013 for $75. Boy am I glad I did.
Yah man, not for nuthin' in the overestimulated (often underwhelmingly bland at core) world of RUclipsrs and their Neverending prayers to an algorithm... I Always get stoked when you put a new video up where I can:
-hear tight shit
-learn real techniques
-observe true skills
-not cringe at some weird strobey visual effect or bad humor
..and I had been thinking about this thing for the last 2 weeks, after I watched this I ordered one off eBay lol
This was my 1st sampler, I got it new back in the day when it came out, ‘97 I think it was..(.?)
Still have, and use it to this day. Just diggin seein’ the ol’ SampleTrak getting some love..!
i use a few of these puppies at once... took me forever to get quick with them
I had it, sold it a long time ago but I had good memories of it.
blowin up the spot
nice little machine to work with and make something in the style of art of noise with and also dint know that zoom went that far back at making audio device
They went from 200 to 500 real fast :(
Great video tho man, love your content.
Sounds pretty decent, thanks for sharing.
The Yamaha su700 has some nice artefacts and a decent amp in it.
Love the sound!
As of Oct. 07, 2021, neither Reverb nor e-bay has them for sale.
where do people find chill jazzy tracks to sample???
I love this. As far as hardware goes do you know what comes close to the “Air Pump” plugin? On the mpc one? I know that may sound silly
This was my first upgrade in 99 coming from the 12 second Gemini sampler and four track combo. It was and still is the most user friendly sampler ever.Do to my finances the MPC was way out of my league.Even though the music I made on the Sampletrak was great,I thought if I had an MPC like the big boys I would be making way better beats.Fast forward quite a bit later and I finally got my hands on one and I can't begin to explain the disappointment I had.Long story short. The Sampletrak was one of the most underrated samplers ever and 2 make due with what you have.
Zoom made some great stuff during the 90's. SP 303 did some great things for me back in the day ✌😉
I use this piece of cake as my second grovebox AND as an effektbox for 2 of the 8 outputs of my xl for live sets. Brilliant gear!
HiFi sampling frequency is actually 32khz at 18 bit resolution.
This was my 1st sampler
My dad gave me one about 20yesrs ago, it was awesome
This was my first piece and it was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
ZOOM's stuff is great. I love my rhythmtrak drum machine from them.
are those sounds in the sample pack or do they come pre programed in the machine? 7:47 - 8:11
I own one too, but i can't find the media card, where did u buy the card?
I don't have a card, need to find one.
I was just playing with my Volca Sample 2 and was thinking how apps like Koala are making large expensive hardware less popular for several reasons. Do we need old gear? Maybe, as for sure it can be more fun with actual hardware.
Practically the only reason i use hardware. It's more fun. Starting from playing acoustic instruments, seems like a natural progression. We all love something to touch and hold.
it's wild looking at threads about this thing bc only a 3-4 yrs ago people were talking about finding them for less than $100 😭
Another great video. And yeah, I can't recommend this sampler enough either. It just sounds great. Just make sure it comes with a smart media card to save yourself a headache.
I have one of these, it’s awesome!
