    Being a Cuban American gal, I must say these were delicious! Reminded me so much of the ones that I ate in a Miami bakery when I would visit my Cuban grandparents. I used 2 boxes of the puff pastries and cut them into squares as opposed to the circles, because it's easier to cut. I used a HEAPING tb of picadillo, I also preheated the oven to 400 and cooked for 25 minutes. Thanks for sharing!

    I have made these about a dozen times. They always came out great as if I got them from a bakery in Hialeah. My compliments to the Chef. For those of you that don't know, if you want good Cuban food in the Miami Florida area the City of Hialeah is the place to go.

    OMG thank you so much! I was born and raised in Miami Florida and have been living in Oregon for about 15 Years and this is what I miss most about Florida. My Cuban food. I went on vacation about a month ago and had all types of pastelito's and can't get over of how much I've missed this. Thank you for posting this, I'm gonna try my hardest to follow every single step you posted this weekend and hopefully they'll come out as good as they look on your video :)

    Hey Julie, once the raisins went in, I was like.... yessssss! In our kurdish cuisine raisins are often in salty and hearty dishes. We have something called Kubba (or Kibbeh) which is basically potato and rice "dough" filled with ground meat, raisins, sautéed onions and almonds. You deep-fry them until they become golden brown. We have the same one with a bulgur/semolina dough/coat aswell... I know it sounds weird, I can't really describe it. Kurdish/middle eastern food is amazing and your video is too! :*

    • @jbjacobs9514
      @jbjacobs9514 Год назад

      Once the raisins and olives went in, I was like...NO!!! I know it is common and standard to put them in but I would be happier without them. Begrudgingly, I have always had the olives in there when having picadillo in Miami, but raisins once in a blue. Still it is amazing!

    GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS!!! Finally, a recipe for pastelillos the way I remember them as a child. Every time I've attempted to find them (in Cuchifritos or Latin Bakeries) I've always gotten what I call "empanadas". I got so tired of explaining "no, they are small round and flaky" and being answered by blank stares that I pretty much gave up...then "VOILA" here you are..EXACTLY what I wanted..y tan simple la receta..wepa!! So from a Boricua sister..QUE VIVA CUBA!! Btw..my neighbor going to Cuba this week..left 40 years ago..so very happy for him and very happy for Cuba..Que Dios la bendiga. ❤

      Hi Julie. You can find the pastelitos in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The bakery is situated at the corner of 5th st and Fulton st. It"s called Clara Bakery. There is another one in Elizabeth ave and 5th st. I believe that one is Mara Bakery. Also you have Cuba Bakery also Known as Las Palmitas in Elizabeth ave and Smith st. They all sell pastelitos de carne. I am assuming that you may find them also all over Bergen County where C
      Cuban community is still strong.

      Cookedbyjulie Nothing wrong with simple videos Julie. Maybe some people don't know it could be that simple. This same video gave me the idea of changing how I make my Puerto Rican Quesitos, I tend to roll the cheese in the puff pastry, I may try to just make some of these things but with a cream cheese mixture inside instead and see if they come out good. :)

    • @Cookedbyjulie
      @Cookedbyjulie  9 лет назад +2

      I've had the kitchen aid artisan for about 4 years now and it's wonderful. I bake very often, but I don't make large batches. It would depend on what you'll be using it for. If you want to sell cakes and etc. I would go with the heavy duty one. If you just want to bake for the family go with the artisan. This is just my personal opinion.

    • @Cookedbyjulie

    I have lived in Miami all my life, and one of my favorite pastellitos is the pastellito de pizza. I can't seem to find a recipe for those anywhere, and some of the bakeries are so secretive, it's like they're run by the C.I.A. Any ideas?

      +Cl Freire lol I've never tried or even heard of those, but I will do my research cause they sound delicious :)

      +Cookedbyjulie They are. I mean, wow, every time I eat one, I want more. If you do find a recipe, you should do a vid on it. I'd absolutely LOVE that!! :)

      +Cl Freire Yes, I remember having one of those when I was a kid. It was so good.
      I live in California so you can't pastries like that around where I live but, yes, good memories. I'm going to youtube or google a recipe to see how they're done.

      +Antonio Kinsey Let us know if you find one, because I've looked and looked to no avail.

      +Cl Freire I know exactly which ones you're talking about! I've never made them before myself but I'm 90% sure the basic filling is a layer of ground-up ham, a layer of cream cheese, and then a layer of seasoned pizza-style tomato sauce. Baked between layers of pastry crust. It's pizza-ish more than actually pizza, but so delicious and nostalgic.
