Barbara was one of the most beautiful actresses on TV, then and now.
@Sandra Jones Both Liz Montgomery and Barbara Eden were gorgeous, IMO. What I enjoyed, however, is as the 60s progressed, both actresses took to wearing shorter and shorter skirts.
Amanda Bellows was Beautiful also
A few years ago, she fit into her costume again.the actual costume.amaxing.
@@MegaCujo69 Emmaline Henry (Amanda Bellows) actually bore a bit of resemblance to Liz Montgomery, I thought.
Barbara Eden was certainly beautiful, even much more beautiful than Elizabeth Montgomery. BOTH had powers in a different kind of a way. But I always wondered which one of them can over power each other.
C. Wayne Brock. California
No matter what Barbara Eden wore on that show -- her genie outfit or regular clothes, as when she came out as Tony Nelson's GF -- she looked gorgeous.
I could not see any wires holding her up when she was floating!
I met Barbara Eden a few weeks ago when she signed my genie bottle..an experience I'll ever forget.
Jeanie lived in a Jim beam bottle? ... That's a new one. I thought that was Larry Hagman.😂
Good one! Lol
Brad Brown
Nyuk, nyuk!
Wow, I didn’t know Major Nelson and Jeanie lived across the street from Darrin and Samantha Stevens, poor Mrs. Kravitz!
I love how Jeannie's pregnancy was covered up.
I've seen a few shows where it's obvious, but I don't mind. It's nice they could accommodate her.
The cast was brilliant on this show. I don't believe anyone could have replaced any of the actors playing these characters and have made it work. Hagman really did a professional job while on set. One of my childhood favorites and always a wee bit more popular than Bewitched among our family.
Please continue to do more videos on this show!
Hagman probably helped to "empty" all those Jim Beam bottles.
The star helping the lowly prop department.
Actually Larry H drank champagne
I loved how Jennie looked at Major Nelson with those adoring eyes. I guess it was a childhood fantasy. At 57, It still plays out today...🤣
Greetings RICK from beautiful Troy, Ohio USA. Another very fine video from you. Like so many other people, I grew up watching I Dream of Jeannie. Watching it every week during its original run, and watching it for years and years in syndication, I would have never guessed that Larry Hagman had drug and alcohol abuse problems. Like you, I never saw anything that even hinted to it. GREAT job.
In Larry Hagman's autobiography he said he was going to quit the show but Hayden Rorke talked him out of it. He told Hagman if he walks off a hit show, no one will want to hire him again.
Hagman didn't want to be typecast as Major Nelson, but I think he got typecast as J R Ewing. Ironic.
Great video, Rick. That is sad about Larry. He obviously was a pro, though, since he did his scenes so well.
This is great. I’m a huge fan of Barbara Eden and Jeannie. Her only son’s name is Matthew not Michael. Mike Ansara was her first husband who appeared on a few episodes playing The Blue Djin, king kamehameha, & Biff Gelico. Ted Cassidy also played a few roles on the series doing a fantastic job as the master of Jeannie’s sister.
Hagman was almost replaced by actor Darren McGavin but Eden was against the recast.
The photos you have in this post are fantastic! Hope you address more stars and elements of this show. It’s one of my favorites.
If there is ever any opportunity for you to meet Eden I’d say definitely do it! She is everything you’d expect her to be 💕🧞♀️
Thank you so much for the correction. I will write it in the description
rick, when it comes to Barbara Eden and Jeannie I’ll share as much as I know. 💕🧞♀️
I didn't know that part about Darren McGavin.
One thing you didn't mention was that the show was based on the movie "The Brass Bottle", starring Tony Randle, Burl Ives (as the genie), and none other than Barbara Eden.
@Alex Mullins - Ha! Agreed!
when I Dream of Jeannie came out Bewitched already had two years in production. Elizabeth Montgomery complained it was a spin off of her show when Jeannie's sister showed up
Thanks Rick for bringing another beloved classic series into your stable. I knew of Larry Hangman's demons on & off set but I didn't know that Jeannie's bottle was from Jim Beam!! Thanks for bringing these fun facts to light ☺👀
I knew back when I was a kid, something was up with Hagman. In close ups, his eyes would wobble.
Great video Rick! It was one of my favorite shows as a kid growing up. Watching this makes me nostalgic, since my sister and I just lost our beloved mother. Thanks so much for this! I think many people know about Larry Hagman’s substance abuse and liver transplant, but all the other facts were news to me. Very interesting facts! Barbara Eden is just such a lovely woman. Thanks for sharing!
The censorship protocols during season one into the season two, went remarkably well. The editors and writers did a fantastic job at mixing the old with the new, and I really like the old episodes as they mixed well with the new. Great job guys!!!
I think the most interesting fact was her being pregnant. I had never noticed. You should have mentioned that her husband played the Blue Jin!
I'm glad you're doing I Dream of Jeannie. I found all the facts interesting. Great job as usual thanks.
Didn't LH know we only watched because of Barbra Eden
In addition to switching to color in the second season, as nearly all TV series did in 1966, the "I Dream of Jeannie" theme song changed too.
….Hagman was a big lush...Why do you think he needed a liver transplant???.....
I didn't particularly like the show, but watched it as a kid because my grandmother had it on. It was definitely memorable, and the actors and set designers did a really good job.
I just wanted to comment on your editing. Nice dissolve at 0:13. You lined up the eyes perfectly. It's harder than it sounds. 👍
All Season 1 episode were in B&W. These have been colorized now. IDoJ was 1 of only 2 NBC programs in primetime during the 1965-66 season. The other B&W series, CONVOY, was cancelled after only 13 episodes.
Very sad when her son died... literally broke her heart!
True, very sad!
@@ricknineg :-(
@@ricknineg Just a thought, unless you've already done this... maybe do a show on the movie and the relavencies between that and the show!
When her ex husband, her son's father, died she said nice things about him on her Facebook page. Classy.
Show more on I Dream Of Jeannie!!! Love that show!
This was great! Makes me really want to watch some episodes again! Most surprising to me was that she was pregnant at first. Did not know that!
great job - a couple "EXTRA" bits to add to what you missed about LH, at the end of season 5, IDOJ was considered by NBC for a 6th season . . . - I F - . . . actor darren mcgavin was hired to replace LH, mainly because NBC was tired of his tantrums, etc., however IDOJ exec's & BE didn't want to have yet another similarity to BEWITCHED in addition to genuinely not wanting to let LH go, so they opted to let NBC cancel the series without "firing"/replacing LH - a very similar situation developed during season 5 of THE BRADY BUNCH with robert reed but in reverse, due to his on set tantrums, the exec's of TBB wanted to fire & replace RR for the 6th season, but ABC wouldn't hear of it and simply cancelled the series at the end of it's 5th season - dick york was not so much fired from BEWITCHED as he was released due to his "illness", being replaced by dick sargent for seasons 6, 7 & 8.
the interior of the house for IDOJ was the same set used for THE DONNA REED SHOW somewhat redressed, as well as being the same house the kravitz lived in on BEWITCHED, again, a somewhat redressed set. the exterior of the IDOJ house is to the left of the driveway of the BEWITCHED exterior - i could go on and on but you probably already know much of this. thanks! :)
In an interview Larry Hagman did for The Archives of Television he talks about how he liked the first year but after that they started repeating stories so often he didn’t like it. He said they basically had 4 scripts they would recycle over and over. You can’t blame him. How boring would that be? He just thought the audience deserved better.
The censorship issues you mention don't surprise me. I remember reading that her navel couldn't be shown. I never knew about the pregnancy. What really surprises me is the fact that her bottle was actually just a painted Jim Beam bottle. Good video! Thanks!
I remember her talking about having to cover her navel, as well. I saw it in an interview some years back.
Oh! Something else comes to mind. It also doesn't surprise me that Larry Hagman was difficult to work with. When Patrick Duffy was plugging "Step by Step," he was asked working with children, because he never had. His reply was, "One Larry Hagman is 10 children."
@@eileenmgandemg9447 The sa- me thing can be said about Dawn Wells. She, too, was r- equired to keep.her belly but ton covered on the Gilligan's Island series, but on @ least two episodes her belly butto n was exposed above the sh ort shorts she usually wore.

Thank you for posting another great video featuring a classic tv show loved by millions of fans around the world. Your videos are always entertaining and informative, keep up the great work. Miss Eden, Mr Hagman and the supporting cast and crew made this a true classic that will be loved for generations. Can't wait for your next video, they always brighten my day.
Thanks for another great vid and another beloved show! Barbara Eden and the whole entire cast and production were amazing !
Great facts about I Dream of Jeannie! I do agree with you that despite what Larry Hagman was going through, he was definitely brilliant in each episode and lovable as you so eloquently said. Great stuff my friend. :) Hope you get to do some "Bewitched" stuff. :)
Some of the story you mentioned I remembered very well but there were some I had no idea about until now. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your story on what you have found yourself about the show. God Bless and can't wait to watch more on I Dream Of Jeannie.
C. Wayne Brock. California
excellent video. I never knew that Larry Hagman had issues with substance abuse. Keep up the great work.
He had a liver transplant due to his excessive drinking.
Jeannie's bottle was never taken into Tony's bedroom overnight! He would come out in the morning to find her in the living room.
General Peterson was played by Barton McLane, who was an old Warner Brothers Studio character actor who appeared in a number of well known movies including The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madrid.
Great video⭐️⭐️I love I Dream of Jeannie❤️ Larry Hagman and Barbara Eden were amazing 👑 I love them both💖 I agree with Barbara Eden about their characters getting married, but I am still happy they did😊 I was surprised about about Larry Hagman, but I do remember watching a documentary saying that his time on the show was not really great. That he enjoyed his “Dallas” experience only.
Wow. I knew Larry Hagman had substance issues, but I didn't know that it was to such an extent. Such a shame, he was very handsome and talented.
I am glad they got married, I loved both characters and thought they belonged together. what a great mix of comedy and a love story.
A LOT of boyhood fantasies happened thanks to this show!
lenses. Second that!👊
and still do !
I knew of Hagman's alcohol problem, but not his drug issues during the series itself. It's like the cast and everyone around him at the time aided and abetted him with his problems rather than firing him and seeking help.
Very good point! In fact he went to therapy and the therapist suggested that he take recreational drugs and alcohol to help his issues. That spiraled out of control. What a crazy prescription!
@@ricknineg that's the 1960's for you, especially if you went to a "therapist" in the hollywood area.
I enjoyed this video as well as many of the other videos you have done. Great job! I will be watching for more of Jeanie and some others too
I love these fact videos you do Rick. I also love that you made one about I Dream of Jeannie. I enjoy the show and I hope you do more videos regarding Jeannie in the near future. Keep up the great work Rick!
Thanks so much, Jared!
One of my favorite shows .
What they did too Dr. Bellows week in and week out making a fool out of him with General Peterson .
Hurricane Jennie was one of the best shows.
With my political news habit, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. There's just something about 1960's TV. There was a lot of creativity in other Arts in this period(That's right. It's Art!) I suppose every generation feels the things they loved in their youth are superior to other ones. Many of these shows sure have lasting power!
I am glad to hear. This channel strives to remain entertaining by visiting classic shows and sitcoms
I didn’t know he threw up, but I heard he pissed on the set. Larry told a story about finding out the show was canceled. When the show was on hiatus after its fifth season. One day he went to the set to get something out of his dressing room, & the gate guard at Screen Gems told him the show had been cancelled. He told another story about how he went about asking for a raise. During the show he was making $1000. an episode and wanted $5,000. He went to Jackie cooper who was VP of programming at Screen Gems at the time. Jackie told him he’d have to see Charles Fries, production VP at the studio. Jackie told Larry not to talk too much because he might talk himself out of it. So Larry wrote ‘shut the f*** up’ on his hand to remind himself not to say too much.
I knew about his drinking etc but I didn’t know about how he acted when he didn’t like a script. I loved this show! Loved the bottle! I have an unpainted one. I also did a race just for the medal which was her bottle! If you loved this show you really need to check out Bewitched! Thanks again for the info!
Those two shows were my favorite.
Larry Hagman was great doing stunts and that unforgettable nervous laugh and Jeannie was also hystericalwith all of her shenanigans. Just loved them both, Jeanne and Major Nelson.
Bewitched was also very funny.
Great shows, I still watch reruns!!
Larry did not vomit on the set, he urinated on it. All of season 1 was filmed in black and white. It was the last show filmed without color. reason being, NBC did not want to spend the $400 per episode because they thought it would last 1 season and be cancelled. Sidney Sheldon offered to pay the extra, but they were not interested. From season 2, episode 1 forward, the show was filmed in color. After the pilot was filmed, Barbara discovered she was pregnant. She told Sidney immediately, but he chose to keep her in the role. Barbaras season 1 costume featured a one piece top, basically a velvet bra with sleeves. To hide her growing belly, they added a large veil that hung loosely over her belly and back. There were 10 episodes filmed while she was carrying her son, Matthew. The 1964 Jim Beam bottle was a special Christmas bottle. Sidney was given one as a gift, and he chose it as a home for Jeannie. 2 versions were made for the show, Gold vines were painted in the first season bottle. After the show went to color, they painted it the now familiar purple design. The bottle that was on the set the last day of filming is the bottle Barbara now has at home. She wanted to donate it to the Smithsonian, but they wanted her to do alot of leg work to prove its authentisity. The last we have heard, it was in a safe deposit box.
Actually he did both
Being a fan of the show since it's inception, and Barbara since "How to Marry a Millionaire, " I already knew all these, plus the fact BE had a belly button. I agree the marriage was the "jump the shark" moment. Hope you will do more YTs on IDoJ and Bewitched.
@1:13 The house of Darrin & Samantha Stevens (Bewitched).
In one of the early episodes the living room set from Bewitched was used as Dr. Bellows house. They added a wall in front of the stairs so that it was not so obvious.
I saw that too! Fun!
I was going to point this out if you hadn't first. I also noticed a similarity between Maj. Nelson's upstairs den and Keith Partridge's bedroom, as THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY was also a Screen Gems sitcom, so the set was probably recycled to some degree.
@@jehobden
I totally missed that. Thanks!
Jeannie's harem pants had to cover her belly button.
When she raised her arms it would sometimes show... the censors I guess allowed that.
I loved this show! Once the two of them got married though, it killed the show. It was no longer funny to me and I stopped watching. I read somewhere the censors were so nutsback then, Jeannie couldn't show her belly button on screen. Even if Hagman was drunk or high on the set, I never noticed it.
Don Nicholas there’s an interview of him talking about it and he was very open about it and admitted he was a little bit of a diva back then and was grateful for how patient Barbara was with him.
Love this new direction for the channel, Rick! "So any undertone that seemed inappropriate....." - like the premise! Hope you also have insight into Get Smart and Green Acres.
I think if they carried the show much further after getting married, it would've mirrored Bewitched.
It already did, in some ways. Many conceptual similarities. They filmed on ajoining stages.
I DREAM OF JEANNIE was actually NBC's attempt to compete with ABC's BEWITCHED when BEWITCHED became an unexpected smash hit, and as Mark pointed out, they did mirror BEWITCHED in a lot of ways . . . supposedly, Jeannie's evil dark-haired twin sister was created by the same BEWITCHED writer who created Samantha's mischevious dark-haired cousin Serena.
Indeed Barbara was and IS so beautiful! The funnest fact was finding out she was pregnant during some of the episodes! The most shocking was the Larry Hagman vomiting incident! I'm so glad your doing I Dream of Jeannie! Oh Rick and Rick Nineg fam! Great News!! I don't have to have chemo! I'll only be doing radiation and medication! I'll keep ya updated😇
If anyone got typecast it was Barbara. She had great range as an actor and was a magnet on screen. She could have played a super mom on Any family show or, because she has so much energy, she could have been on any cop show or fast moving comedy. Classy lady and great person.
Barbara was my favorite among the ladies of that era!
Larry Hagman lived in Ojai, CA (home of Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man) at the top of Sulphur Mountain Road. He rode a Goldwing to some of the charity events at the beach here in Ventura, CA where I got to meet him. Nice guy but I wished I had asked him more questions about the show...
Rick I don’t know how or why you ended up in my “recommended but I’m so glad you did! I’m a brand new subscriber and I am enjoying your channel very much. Great content my man!!
Thank you so much and welcome to the channel! Please be sure to email me
Rick, what a great video! I noticed 2 mistakes: 1) Barbara Eden was pregnant while filming the first 10 episodes - you said the first 10 season 2) Barbara’s son’s name was Matthew Ansara and his father was actor Michael Ansara. I noticed that you corrected that one though. I love that when Barbara Eden talks about the show, Larry Hagman, and even Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, she always manages to say very positive things about her experiences. She never seems to be bitter about any of her life experiences and has one of the most positive attitudes of any performer. Please post more of these videos about ‘I Dream of Jeannie’, ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘Gilligan's Island’.
Thanks Phillip. First error was corrected in video. 2nd was corrected in description! Thanks for your support and wonderful engagement, Phillip!
I am a member of the Pasadena Tournament Of Roses parade Association and Barbara Eden was going to be picked as grand marshal for the Rose Parade, but the year that she was going to be picked was when her son passed away of a drug overdose
WOW! Loved this!
Keep these vids coming ,i grew up watching this show, and Bewitched, which if you can do some vids on that show would really like
Sad that Mr Hagman had these addictions. Interesting information.
Jeannie is a great addition to your channel!!
What a fun video. Keep them coming.... Thanks!
I appreciate how you dealt with Larry Hagman’s addiction issues with such respect and understanding rather than just trashing him as many word. I met him briefly and he did a cameo on the first Superman movie when I worked on it, he was a longtime friend of director Richard Donner. I have to say even though I think he was still drinking at the time, it was a lot of fun and a total pro.
My mom loved this show. As a kid, so did I. I remember as a small child seeing this show. :) I dream of Jeanie ( my mom's middle name was Jean and her nick name was 'Jeanie bug' LOL) I always thought Barbara Eden was so beautiful and so perfect for this show. She was awesome. Later on, ( during the making of Dallas series ) I heard that Larry Hagman had a drinking problem. Although I thought he was great in t his in this show and in Dallas as well, I had no idea that he was showing up on the show under the influence. That's sad. He was a great actor in both characters.
Love the video and the channel
I enjoyed this show and I never knew that Larry Hagman had drinking and substance abuse issues but I was a kid back then so I probably would not have noticed. Thank you for providing info for this show. I hope someday you will be able to cover Bewitched because that was my favorite of the 2 shows. Again, thank you and I look forward to future coverage about this show.
A Jim Beam bottle !! Who knew? First time I heard this ! So cool
Another job well done
Thank you for reminding me of how old I am😆😆😆, great video. Yes heard all this over the years but you made a great show of it. Look up the show This is your Life with Barbara in it you my be surprised.😋
Great video, as usual, Rick. I didn't realize that Larry Hagman had already developed problems with substance abuse during this series. He was so handsome, and acted so effortlessly well that no one (outside of his inner-circle, I guess) knew the truth. I enjoyed watching "Jeannie" in syndication reruns, but they became stale towards the end of the series. It seemed as though they started to repeat themes and scripts towards the end of the show.
Very interesting video!! Thanks
Already have a job and a car but watched both commercials in full for ya Rick!
Great job on this show. How was it for you getting info in it? Keep up the great work!!
Thanks so much Chad! Know you can also rate the ads to cater more to you. Sometimes if you rate them often, you’ll get ads you like and enjoy more. Some are pretty funny and make the watch worthwhile 😎
Get adblockers. You'll never have to sit through commercials on RUclips.
I've heard of Larry Hagman's difficulty behind the scenes, but I've never heard of it having to do with drugs and alcohol . . . I've heard it suggested that part of his frustrations was male ego: playing second fiddle to a woman. I've even heard that his behavior on the set was so outrageous at times that when Sammy Davis, Jr. guest-starred on the show, Hagman actually spat on him! You'll notice, though, that Hagman directed some later episodes - this was supposedly an attempt to make him happy.
As for the black-and-white, it was actually NBC and Screen Gems that decided to have the first season in black-and-white. Creator Sidney Sheldon wanted the show to be filmed in color from the get-go, and even offered to pay for the extra expense for color film out of his own pocket, but was advised against it; NBC felt the show would not last beyond a first season, since it was clearly an attempt to compete with ABC's BEWITCHED, and the added expense of filming in color would have been all for naught as far as they were concerned.
Wasn't her son's name, Matthew? Michael was her husband. And Barbara was proved right about the fact that they shouldn't have gotten married when the show was canceled that same season. When it comes to my favorite I Dream of Jeannie episode I have two: the episode in the first season when she tries to get Tony jealous by fabricating a house (on Col. Bellows' empty lot), and a weird set of parents, and the one when she tries selling the house and it looks like a palace inside and a regular house outside. Your video was informative and fun!
It was filmed in Black and White like most shows of the era because most people had B&W TV sets. Now about Jeannie....she was the pre adolescent boy's dream girl. She was definitely mine with Samantha Stevens running a close second, which if you look at 1:13, there's the Steven's house.
Man I’m stunned...I’ve been a huge fan of I Dream of Jeanie but I didn’t know she was pregnant that first season and the other thing that caught me by surprise was Larry Hagman boozing it up AND using drugs? Well it’s a matter of fact that just because you think you know everything about a show there’s someone out there that knows a little more...👍🏼👍🏼❤️
I’m so happy to be able to provide you with information that you didn’t know! That makes my day

Thanks Rick but that actually makes MY day...they say you can’t teach a old dog new tricks or as my dad would say (God rest his soul) that you can’t teach old people more knowledge...he was born in a time 1920 when some doctors thought that once you hit a certain again your memory starts failing us and knowledge wasn’t able to be remembered...(I always thought that’s what they blamed Alzheimer’s and dementia on) but thank you all the same...I’ll be watching for more...
Nothing on TV was more entertaining or Hilarious than seeing Larry Hagman portray panick!! He did it SO SO BRILLIANTLY!!! and to know that He was drunk during some of it is so funny..You'd never know.. It was Magnificent!!!!!
Great job on this presentation, thank you for taking the time to do it, all of your hard work and effort shows.
I have always been a fan of the show and really liked it in black and white or in color.
The show was about the story and the actors back then and that’s the main difference between TV shows and Movies from then and now.
You mentioned the Technology back then multiple times. Well I was a kid back then and watched and enjoyed these shows. I liked the shows just as much in black and white as I enjoyed them in color.
One main difference that nobody seems to talk about is the drop off in substance and production values of the Colorized shows. I think it is because when they were Black and White there was no Color to enhance the Show or its Episodes presentation so they had to work harder and put more effort into the overall presentation. When Color TV came along it added a vast array of visual effects to the viewers. Things they had to present to and convince the viewers of with words and presentations could now be easier and completely sold to the viewer by just visual presentations. Shows and their scripts required less effort to fill the time slot.
A lot of good TV shows, especially SitComs that were on the TV in Black and White and doing well in the ratings , then switched to Color and then ended. I think this for the most part was due to a drop off in quality of writing and production quality. I think the studios put less money in the budgets for these things then they put into Guest Stars and Visual effects.
This is what I think was one of the main reasons I Dream of Jeannie went off the air. Possibly the scripts went downhill then the ratings suffered then they pulled the bad Idea of marrying the two main characters to get a high audience for that episode. Then there was less and less story directions and options to go into. And the show died. There were multiple other reasons that contributed to the shows demise such as Larry Hagman wanted out so he could pursue other things in his career.
What do you think? And thanks again for another well thought out presentation of a nice show and Characters.
I grew up with this show and I have a bottle ( not original) (not painted) just green ….lol
Larry Hagman was very difficult on the show. He also urinated on the set, showed up frequently wearing bizarre costumes (one time in an ape suit!), drank champagne and smoked pot in his trailer, hid in his trailer most of the time, got in frequent arguements with producer Sidney Sheldon, didn't like when guest stars were on the show, constantly fought about the scripts and in the episode where Sammy Davis Jr. appeared, said something to Sammy that made him so mad, they weren't speaking by the time they broke for lunch. Also, I really liked the episodes after they got married. They showed Dr. and Mrs. Bellows much more and they were the funniest characters on the show!
OMG! Dr. Bellows was my favorite always seeing his inquisitive and puzzled looks wondering what in the world was going on, lol
The Jim Beam bottles. Crates of bottles. Ha. How many did Mr. Hagman help himself to during filming?
Another very interesting presentation well done Rick. So many people try to do videos of this nature and they just drone on loving the sound of there own voice. You keep the viewer interested with the fun details. Thanks

And... she is still beautiful today ! Inside and out !
The ENTIRE FIRST SEASON originally was filmed in black and white (not just some of the first season episodes). It was colorized when the series was put out on DVD, but people can buy either the black and white version and/or the colorized version. :)
Barbara Eden was absolutely right about mirroring on the show. They would have had to go in a totally different direction, more or less rewriting the entire premise of the I dream of Jeannie.....
Surprised Barbra Eden didn’t want the characters to get married. I understand the concept of why she didn’t. But her main base were little girls. I was one of them. I don’t think we would of loved the show as much without them getting married. It also became tiresome for Jeannie to constantly be hiding from everyone.
I’m not surprised about Larry Hagman having substance abuse issues. I had heard that. I honestly thought it was after I Dream of Jeannie was over. It did definitely catch up with him later.
As much as people gripe about it, I think it was a natural evolution for the show. Five years of flirting had to lead to something, and Jeannie really couldn't stay hidden forever. It's debatable for me if the shows following the marriage were better or worse, since there's so few compared to other shows who lasted long after "jumping the shark", but it would have happened sooner or later. They were building up to it from the very beginning.
Hi Rick! I Dream of Jeannie came on our oldies channel this summer and I didn't realize there was a cost issue about the pink smoke. There's Phil Ober again too! I remember around Hagman's Dallas days he had a liver transplant and promised to kick the booze and take care of himself, but he went right back to his heavy drinking and wrecked his second liver.
Ober was everywhere! Lol He was in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest
My favorite episodes was the one with Sammy Davis, Jr. It was very funny with the addition of having the talented Mr. Davis doing his night club act. It was one of the best of a great series. Also the episode "Here Comes Bootsie Nightingale" staring Carol Wayne as Bootsie is a fantastic one and probably my second favorite.
I would like to add, in my opinion as with a lot of shows, there are episodes I will skip because they weren't as good as others. But I Dream of Jeannie was an expectation. I can't think of a single episode I didn't like.
I didn't care for the episodes with that little dog causing havoc.
I love color television but the old black and white shows are the best. Netflix, cable and all of the streaming services, 99% of the time I will be watching old t.v. shows and movies.
There are three episodes of Jeannie that Larry Hagman directed.
Sammy davis jr. He was on one of the episodes Larry hagman was directing.
I believed that everything I saw happening on this show really happened, it was that good
I heard he had a drinking problem but didn’t know he would show up to film under the influence. Plus the throwing up on the set. I think the two of them getting married kinda ruined the show. It was fun but almost like the mystery was gone and nothing to look forward to anymore.
Sandra Jones Oh Ok I didn’t know that.
Yeah he talks about all the drinking and drugs in his book. It’s amazing he lived long enough to do Dallas. You can totally see he’s drunk a lot on Dallas. He was what they call a “functioning drunk” where somehow, even though he’s drunk, he can still work.
Good thing she didn't go for Darren McGavin. There wouldn't have been a Night Stalker series.
