    How could a person not love “the Hollywood episodes”? They were ones I always looked forward to! And their hotel room set was a favorite!

    I'm going to explain why the numbers are different on the Mertz' doors. I know every episode in my sleep. It completely makes sense that the Mertz' have another room because earlier in the episode Ricky Sells the Car, Lucy finds out that the Mertz' checked out of their room. There's a very good possibility that the hotel gave their room to someone else and they had to find another one.

    Remember, in that episode, the Mertz's checked out of their hotel room.
    Maybe that's the reason they had a different room. Just a thought.

    Lucille Ball was a stickler for detail, and it is highly unlikely that she would have let such a glaring continuity error get past her. As mentioned by others, the Mertzes had already checked out of the hotel and were preparing to ride the motorcycle back to NY. After they are promised train tickets they check back in and get new, different rooms. That is the attention to detail that made Lucy the legend she was.

    The sets on Donna Reed, Dennis the Menace, and My Three Sons were all similar and perhaps the same, but re-dressed. Jeannie's "house" was used in Bewitched and Hazel.

    I'd love to see a video on the props. For instance, the bucket of quick-drying cement looked so real. Even to the point where Ricky struggled to pick up Lucy, it looked so authentic! Any ideas??

      lucy girl true. Same with the rice in the job switching episodes!

    • @mled6381
      @mled6381 5 лет назад +2

      Antoinette Depasquale The cement was simply plaster, and that scene is a testament to the comedic ability that Desi had. The rice was pumped in through a hose that was routed from the other side of the wall and into the stove. That is why they don’t just lift the pot and put it into the sink, and if you watch, when Desi uses the broom and dust pan to scoop up the rice, the pot doesn’t move because it’s anchored to the stovetop by the tube.

  • @crowgrl13
    @crowgrl13 6 лет назад +2

    Something that I've always wondered...who was paying for the Mertz's hotel room? It made sense of course for the studio to pay for Ricky and Lucy's room, but not the Mertz's, and with Fred being such a well-known cheapskate, I doubt he would have paid for one. Also, it looks like the Mertz's room is different from the Ricardo's: Lucy and Ricky had a living room and kitchenette (in addition to the two bedrooms), but the Mertz's just had a typical living room/bedroom style typical of most hotels.

    • @Avery_4272
      @Avery_4272 5 месяцев назад

      Yes - I've wondered for years who paid for the Mertz's hotel room during that long stay in Hollywood! Unlike the Europe episodes, Fred wasn't being Ricky's band manager or doing any work for Ricky which would cause the studio to pay for his and Ethels room! It's a mystery to me, too! (Maybe Fred & Ethel had a large savings?!)

  • @jorgieg1
    @jorgieg1 4 года назад +2

    It was early television. Being under the microscope, some 70 years later probably wasn’t really on anyone’s mind. Sets were a platform for the comedy.. not to be under scrutiny for mistakes.

    Not sure if you’re familiar with the show Gilmore Girls, but there is an episode where a character, Kirk, is pretending to be in a renaissance time period (trying to stay in character) and Lorelei is taunting him, trying to make him crack. She compares to what Lucy did to the royal guard in England. The reason I bring this up is because she finally makes him crack by saying, ‘the Europe episodes of Lucy were the best’. Kirk breaks character and yells, ‘No, the Hollywood ones were better’. Just thought you might find that funny.

  • @WheresMyKoppy

    This is easily solved. The Mertzes checked out of their room after Ricky sold the car. They were going home on the motorcycle. Once the motorcycle wrecked, they checked back into the hotel, but into another room. Its as simple as that.

    Hi Rick, I too have been watching I Love Lucy for many many years since I was a child like you and many of us. I must have watched every episode at least 100 times or at least had them on in the background. I only just noticed today in re-watching the Hollywood episodes that for S4 Ep25 "The star upstairs" episode and onwards the railing on the balcony is changed, from an inward slant to being straight and flat... Must have been to make it a bit easier for Lucy to climb back in after landing on "One of the most uncomfortable palm trees in California" Also the backdrop for the view of Hollywood outside the balcony appears to have moved quite a bit to the left.

  • @truerose1539
    @truerose1539 5 лет назад +1

    Rick, The reason for the different bedroom in the Ricky Sells the Car episode (from the John Wayne episode) is because earlier in the Car episode, it is already established that the Mertzes have checked out of their hotel room. That's when the Ricardos go down and find them in the hotel garage on the motorcycle that eventually crashes. After the crash, Ricky agrees to pay their train fare back to NY, and the Ricardos and Mertzes reconcile. Then the Mertzes check back into the hotel. Logically, it can be assumed that the Mertz's original hotel room is not available, so upon checking in they are given an alternate (new) room. Is this plausible? Also, while I enjoy your postings, please keep in mind that the episodes that we've all watched in syndication are NOT the original episodes; (that is not even the original opening credits) for syndication purposes scenes are either cut out entirely or truncated- anywhere from 2-5 minutes has been cut, so it is also possible that continuity issues are apparent, when in reality it is because of the heavy editing. That was one thing that Lucille Ball hated about watching them on TV- she felt that they were poorly edited for syndication and often an episode was ruined.

    I work in a hotel and many guests stay with us for weeks and many get tired of their rooms or something is wrong with the plumbing that they have to move to a different room. So, in my opinion, it’s not at all weird that the Mertzes would have changed rooms in the month or so that they were in Hollywood.

I was born in 1951, so I saw the episodes only in repeats and then I bought the whole series twice as VHS left and I went to DVD. I never caught this door issue. I am pretty good with the dialogue. I don’t know about the room number or exit doors, but I always assumed the Mertzes had a studio room, not a suite like the “Star” was provided. When you see Lucy massaging Fred’s shoulder, he’s in a chair with their beds behind him. Perhaps there’s no separate living room at all for them?

    Rick, I always noticed that the 2 Mertz rooms were different and the way I explained it in my head was because in the second sequence it was after they had checked out of the hotel to take the motorcycle back to NY. Figured they needed to check back to a different room? Does that make any sense?

  • @dioro93257
    @dioro93257 6 лет назад +8

    During this episode, the Mertzes checked out of room 217 because they bought a motorcycle to ride back to NY. When they crashed it and Ricky agreed to buy the train tickets, they checked back into the hotel into another room which was 372.

    Hi. I enjoy your videos. Do you notice that the wall art in the Mertz’s hotel room. The paintings behind the bed seem different in each episode. In the second episode they seem bigger, and have different frames.

    Hi Rick. I agree with Scott, below. I've seen the Hollywood episodes numerous times and caught the opposite doors in the Mertz's hotel room , also. I figured that they had to check into a different room after checking out and trying the crazy stunt to ride back to New York on a motorcycle failed. That's a funny scene down in the hotel parking area when Ricky and Lucy catch Fred and Ethel trying to ride out on the motorcycle!
    Of course, it's never mentioned that they had to check into a different hotel room.
    Also, you say at the first of the above video that the season starts with the Grauman's Chinese theater and John Wayne episode, but you mean is season 5 starts with the John Wayne episode. The whole Hollywood series began in season 4, January 1955 which ended in May, 1955, and carried over into season 5, that started in October, 1955.
    Here's a flub in the Hollywood series to look into to. In episode 27 of season 4, Lucy announces that old friend from New York, Carolyn Appleby, is unexpectedly visiting Hollywood and Lucy needs to show her some celebs. That where Van Johnson guest stars. Then, in the next episode, number 28, season 4, Lucy is in a dither that Carolyn Applyby is in town and has to show her some celebs.. That's the famous Harpo Marx episode.
    Huh? What gives?! In episode 28, Lucy acts like it's the first time Carolyn Applyby has shown up, suddenly forgetting all about the previous episode with the Van Johnson dancing routine she did for Carolyn's benefit. I think the producers, Desi, who over saw the whole production, and the writers got mixed up or something.
    If you have the whole series on video, check it out. What do you think, Rick?

    Notice the large window in the shot @3:46 - If room 371 were real, once you enter, you would have to turn right immediately.
