Interesting story about Berle going through shoes. I've heard that Jerry Lewis never wore the same pair of socks twice. Apparently, due to growing up in a struggling household.
Hey Rick, I'm a big I Dream Of Jeannie fan & especially Barbara Eden & of course who doesn't like Uncle Miltie!!! I never knew this fascinating fact about Milton Berle & his feet & shoes!!! You have a real talent for presenting the most interesting information about classic shows & their stars!!! Thanks for your great channel!!!! 👍👍🙂
Don't forget, at the taping, Uncle Milty had been dressing in drag for at least 30 years and women's shoes are so impractical that often women have to seek out podiatrists.
Thank you Rick for bringing together more trivia from the past. Many of us that grew up with Uncle Milty, really appreciate your research. Also, bringing together the fact, that many also do forget that actors and actresses, have the same issues with life as everyone else! Cheers. Dan
Thank you. Folks in the "industry" have always remarked about Berle when it comes to his manner, character and yes, his anatomy. But you gave us a very candid moment when I think he was being very genuine and shared what nobody ever saw; his humanity. It takes a lot to open up about not just a deformity but a tough and impoverished childhood.
Really cool to see another I Dream of Jeannie video. These videos are always interesting as I find out something new all the time with them. Keep up the great work Rick!
Hello Rick. Very nice story and Milton Berle trivia. It was the same with my father. He had 6 brothers, and he got the hand me down shoes and the curled-up toes as a result. As an adult, he would always still cut slits in the toe area of his non-work, or non-dress shoes for more comfort. Keep up the great work.
We are but human and all deal with our own personal detriments in one form or another and we must continue to remind ourselves of that. Very intriguing facts Rick, you always share the good stuff!
It is during one of the upload parts here on RUclips of Larry Hagman’s on camera interview for The Archive Of American Television that I first learned from Hagman regarding his own shocked visual discover of Berle’s deformed feet and Berle’s explanation to Larry of how his feet got that way. Larry was truly humbled by the experience- you could readily tell, and expressed great respect for Berle’s determination, and stamina through all the years he suffered with the pain from that condition to give so many entertaining moments of laughter to everyone.
My father was in the same boat as Mr Berle growing up. His toes are also curled up. When I was a kid I always had new shoes. My father was also on top of making sure they were not too small. It's something I have done with my kids just because I saw my father doing it. I now understand why he did that.
Nice informative video again, some other facts about Milton. Other commedians of the time made a point to say if their joke was good that Milty would eventually steal it, haha Also and Ill put a x rating on this comment that Uncle Milty loved the young girls and they loved him. Red Foxx once told a joke that the Hollywood fire department had a hose shortage so they signed Uncle Milty up to help put out the fires !! haha Good job Rick.
Your stories look behind the real lives of television characters we love. They do such a good job acting that we forget that they are acting. Their personal lives may be quite different than expected.
What a touching story; it really helps us empathize with others when you know just a little bit more of their story. I read a great biography about Elvis Presley that explained that, other than when he was playing a character in a movie, Elvis never again wore jeans once he started making money as a singer because they reminded him of the poverty he and his family suffered when he was a little boy.
Thank you, as always, for a very good video. It's intriguing to think about the past histories of these stars and to realize that they had struggles like everyone else. Thanks for a great video.
I’ve always heard it say that our past forms our today and what we experience today forms our future. In the case of MB, it may be the case of I can now afford expensive new shoes and I’m going to buy and wear as many as I can, or it could have been his feet were so bad, that he had to wear special fitting shoes (which are very expensive) and then change into different pairs of these shoes frequently because they bothered him after awhile. Actors do stand on their feet a lot more than you think. Great video and great insight into the legend that was Berle! Thank you Rick!
I absolutely loved Milton Berle ! I really enjoyed learning this information..it really does show a side of him that maybe a lot of people don’t know, especially the vulnerability. Just like you said, maybe people like us who aren’t famous or wealthy don’t think about it, we just assume like you said they are “rich” they could fix whatever is wrong ie feet- and then like you said taking things to an opposite extreme of many shoes because he didn’t grow up with a lot. Thanks Rick for your research of all your videos..💜
Great video! A few more interesting facts. The actor next to Milton Berle playing the chauffeur and waiter on the yacht is one of the directors who worked on the show, Hal Cooper. Apparently, the actor who was supposed to play the part became ill and Mr. Cooper volunteered to fill in. Also, NBC goofed. Originally, the three episodes filmed in Hawaii were supposed to be the first to air for season 3. For some reason, this was changed, though NBC still aired the third Hawaii episode as the third episode of the season (Sept. 26, 1967). The FIRST Hawaii episode, which shows Tony & Roger leaving for the trip, aired as the 14th episode (Dec. 26, 1967), with the next Hawaii episode airing as the 15th episode (Jan. 2, 1968). It's too bad this wasn't corrected and shown in the correct order for syndication.
Thanks for sharing that story. It's symbolic of the rags to riches story and how we can all rise above our humble beginnings. 👍 My brother was 7 years older than me and I got his 'hand me downs' but because of the age gap they were a little out of style by the time they fit me. 😎
Hi Rick, when I look back to my childhood in the 1960's there were stories from friends, neighbors, teachers and my parents about life in America during the Great Depression. Some of the stories were hard to believe, until a TV talk show host named Merv Griffin interviewed all the big names in Movies and TV, all the way back to the silent movie era. Lucille Ball told Merv that she grew up so poor that she would steal food to survive. Lucy said, "few people born after the 1950's really know poverty, but it plays a role in the lives of many great actors of the 20th century".
Wow. I love Uncle Miltie. Texaco Star Theater is amazing; he's one of the best ad libbers ever. For a dramatic turn, there's an episode of Dick Powell Theater in which he stars and he is simply brilliant. I also love the clip of Henny Youngman heckling Milton when he's hosting Hollywood Palace. And the Dean Martin Roasts are up one notch when he is on there (sparring with Don Rickles). I didn't know you were going to talk about his feet but it's reported that he had a very large....... and I thought that's what you were going to talk about.
I don't know how they would have pulled it off, but, an I Dream Of Jeannie/Hawaii Five-0 crossover would have been awesome. A Jack Lord cameo would have been cool!

True. Grandpa wore shoes that were a size or two smaller than his actual size, because he grew up wearing hand -me-downs. He had what used to be called "Hammer toes". He also had some level of that naturally, and his thumbs were double jointed. Mom had similar toes, but hers were slightly straighter because she got to wear shoes that fit, as did I. I might not have grown up as poor as grandpa, but I still grew up lower middle class, and my KMarche` (Kmart) shoes might have been cheap, they at least fit. Yes, I inherited the double jointed thumbs and hammer toes, sadly not much else. Thanks for honoring grandpa! -JMN
Did I spot the Ilikai Hotel? A beautiful hotel in Waikiki! That’s the one McGarret is on the balcony in the opening credits of the ole Hawaii Five-0. One of my favorite cop shows. They were on for 12 seasons!! How about some 411 from this classic!
I never met any of the celebrities who came into town to entertain, but my father was a pharmacist on the Las Vegas Strip, in a store next-door to the Desert Inn Hotel, at the time. He came home one evening very pleased with himself. Guess who came into the store today, he said. Well. Barbara Eden had been in, and dad said she was the nicest of the bunch. She had all that long hair down to the small of her back, and he asked her, "Barbara, how much of that beautiful hair is yours?" and she was generous. "About down to here " (slightly below the shoulders) "is me," she said, "and all the rest of the way down it is a minor expense." I am sure she looked fantastic. What a sparkle, right? She winked, paid for her goods in cash, and departed in her very lovely, well-kept joy.
That title's so evil if you know about Miltie's rumored feature... Famous feet can be a shock. A comics pal of mine was at a convention hotel during a midnight fire evacuation. Standing outside, Bob saw Forrest J Ackerman dressed but barefoot. Bob said Forry's bare feet were "like Imhotep's feet! They were yellow parchment with crazy toenails!" Forry was a friend, but I never asked to see his feet.
Another piece of trivia about this episode: the bald man seen behind Milton Berle, who was playing a sort of henchman to Berle's conman, was played by tv director, Hal Cooper. Cooper & this episode's director, Claudio Guzman, had both travelled to Hawaii to direct various episodes of this trilogy. When the actor who'd been hired to play the part was stuck back in LA on another job, Cooper took over the job for a rare acting job for him.
I didn’t remember this at first but when you mentioned the land with diamonds- I remember. To be honest with the title big….I thought you were speaking about his ding a Ling! Milton was legendary in this area. Lol
I wasn’t expecting that! Oh my, that would be shocking to see. I wonder if that was really the reason, or if he just had gnarly feet! If it was, that’s sad. It brings to mind the episode on the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour where he’s walking down the stairs in those high heels! Sooooo funny! His feet must have really hurt. What a trooper! This was really good, Rick! 👍👍👍👍
He was already close to 70 , I was wondering the same thing that maybe Barbara Eden just wasn’t used to looking at an old man’s feet and he was just doing his normal humor to laugh at himself
Sally N: Milton Berle(Mildred Burke) in drag with the mole on his(her) cheek and inability to maneuver those heels down the stairs was the best part of that episode! Then telling Fred "you're cute" and Fred answering "you're not too bad yourself". Both Hysterical! That was the last great program of I Love Lucy actually it may have been part of the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour. After that the magic of I Love Lucy was lost!
I heard Larry Hagman confronted Milton about this. He told him the same story. My 1st job was at a themed park in Houston, TX. It gets here. A buddy of mine, age 17 while on lunch break confided in me "As soon a I get home, I'm gonna soak my CORNS!" My parents made sure that my shoes always fit properly. Young growing feet NEED TLC. When I'd be in wardrobe, there was a shocking amount of teenage boys suffering from corns/ bunions. I then felt truly blessed that my parents took care of me. While Milt could have those nice shoes/ the damage had already been done. Toe straightening & surgery wasn't there yet.
Hey Rick, 'great insight to the psyche of some people. This is a similar story about Jerry Lewis who, after making it big, never wore the same socks twice because of his poor childhood.
I remember an interview on Howard Stern with a guy who said he once had a size contest with Milton Berle. Howard asked him how big it was and the guy said "I don't know. He took out just enough to win".
Rick your video prompted me to read up on Berle on Wikipedia. The article said He also worked as a child model and was "Buster Brown" for "Buster Brown" shoes. Interesting.
I did not know that about Milton Berle. But I do understand how Barbara Eden was a bit confused about his toes. I had a great aunt that was a showgirl back in the twenties and one day as a kid I was looking down at her toes and I saw they were crossed over and scrunched up also and she said it was because back then she would wear really tight small shoes for that cute sexy look.
True story, it's 1980 my husband was flying out of L.A.X . Was kissing him good bye next thing we heard was get a room and his famous laugh. We turn around and see Uncle Miltie saying coochie coochie coo to our 9 month old! It was wonderful we all chit chatted for a bit. Got his autograph. My husband actually got to sit next to Milton. Totally forgot about that till now. ✌😊🐩
That's odd. In an archival interview with Larry Hagman, Hagman relates the exact same story, only he's the one who noticed Berle's feet and Berle told him about the hand me down shoes.
He grew up in Harlem and as a child was a model for Buster Brown shoes (I kind of wonder if there isn't another explanation for his misshapen toes. He is also famous for winning bets regarding the size of his man hood. I thought that is what you were going to mention. LOL
Oh yes if you never listened to his old radio variety shows, much of his humor was based off of being poor as a child and not wanting to spend money on anything as an adult. I’m hoping his feet were not actually deformed from his shoes as a child although it’s possible but it’s also possible Barbara Eden was just young and beautiful at the time and not used to looking at an old man’s feet , he was already close to 70 when this episode was filmed
Never mind the shame of not having decent shoes! The physical pain he must have gone through. Reminds me of the horror Chinese women(all classes) endured for 1000 years until as little as almost a century ago when women there were forced to have their feet bandaged extremely tight to keep them from growing(known as footbinding) creating permanent deformity all because the men loved small feet on women and they were fearful women would run away! Barbaric!
I think it's possible that he just told her that story there is a certain form of arthritis Steven Tyler has it that makes your toes go strange directions I think if you were to look at his fingernails it could well confirm this I did wonder if well you know
After hearing all the stories about Berele the glance at his feet wasn't what I thought she got a glance of that unnerved her.
Interesting story about Berle going through shoes. I've heard that Jerry Lewis never wore the same pair of socks twice. Apparently, due to growing up in a struggling household.
Thank you Rick for sharing , I hadn’t watched IDOJ in years, but recently saw this episode. I did not know this about Milton Berle.

Fascinating, Rick. A reminder that actors are people with real lives, real situations they dealt with or are dealing with. Thank you 🙂
Very much so!
I got to meet Barbara Eden several years ago she was very friendly a pleasure to meet. I never heard this before, fascinating.
People who know the "legend" of Milton Berle thought we were finally going to get confirmation that it's true.
😂😂😂😂😂🍆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Probably explains why he never got shoes that fit properly when he was young, too. 😳
That's what I was thinking. LMAO.

That’s unbelievable!
And awesome!
@@dianetheisen8664 thank you
@@ricknineg I'm glad you liked. I'm happy the video jogged my memory. ✌😊🐩
Barbra Eden was a true beauty.
Nice Job RICK......Talk about "BAIT & SWITCH" 😅 (You Know EXACTLY What I'm Talking about).

LOL
The word you meant to say at 6:58 is idiosyncrasies not insecurities. Idiosyncrasy is where we get the word "CRAZY" from.. and also the word "IDIOT"
👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much!
You had me going. We know what was (supposedly) legendary about Milton. I was almost certain it would read: When she saw his giant penis.
Jeannie Goes To Hawaii, and The Battle Of Waikiki, which features Hawaiian singer Don Ho.
Never knew this.
Interesting.
🤔
If Milton could afford any shoe he wanted, why didn't he just fix his feet? 🤷♀️
Whew! I thought maybe she caught sight of another legendary part of his anatomy.
The rumors are true based on the number of people with similar experiences. - so she got that view later
If anything the shoes might have been to big not to small. Milton Berle was a real douche bag to people.
Both him and President Johnson.
Barbaric!
A def ouch
JEANNE. Eden was a pinup model.
Found out about his snake.
I think it's possible that he just told her that story there is a certain form of arthritis Steven Tyler has it that makes your toes go strange directions I think if you were to look at his fingernails it could well confirm this I did wonder if well you know
Oh, you are a sly one, that’s not his only secret!
Well, apparently small clothing didn't stunt the growth of something else... 😂
...unit. uncle Milty was...a tripod.
That is parental abuse.
will we ever get a mash review
I never watched Mash and I’ve honestly have never been interested in the show. I cover Hogans Heroes regularly.
M.a.s.h was the best show on tv I think
@@AlexRodriguez-hl1vu Right up there with F Troop! (sarcasm)
Totally miss leading
Not at all
There is something amazing about him but this ain't it.
The real question is once she got over the shock did she take a ride on his bologna pony?
