  • Recently I went to an auction to check out a couple cars and stumbled across this 1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z.... with only 116 original miles! How crazy is that?!? Apparently it's never been registered. The original owner had a small collection of cars and almost all were low-mile originals. In this video I've got a little history of the '89 Camaro IROC-Z and of course the auction results. How much did you think it would go for? Did the new owner get a good deal, or overpay? Let me know what you think! With RPO N10 The 5.7 TPI was rated 240 hp. You could get a manual transmission with the IROC Z, but only with the 5.0 v8. When you upgraded to the 5.7 only an automatic was available. Interesting.

      Brady - that's why I was interested to see what it would go for. Low mile cars like this are still cheap, but you don't see a car with 100 miles every day. So kind of a weird situation. I actually think it was a speciality dealer that bought the car. I'm sure they'll find a buyer for 70K at some point... but it might sit on the lot for 2-3 years.

    Many camaro owners and car fan's consider the third generation to be the best looking CAMARO hands down. Its actually the last all new camaro design since the forth generation was just a sleeker third gen with more power.I dislike the new boxer retro one's, it's like gm ran out of ideas and went back to the first gen since ford did this on the mustang. I have alot of memories with the third gen, even got my licence on one. Beautful car.

People paying these prices are picky too. A guy bought the yellow one over a red one that sold for less because it was RED ON RED ( and I do not blame him ) His was yellow on black with gold accents outside which bothered me. However with slim pickings I would be a bit more lenient. I would have gone for the yellow over the red on red too. Hello again, upon further examination.....this car has the G80 limited slip, and J65 disc breaks so it automatically had the G92 performance rear end gear....Now with the L98 engine (5.7) we are getting more rare.
    With options like split rear seat, cargo cover and rear defogger or premium Bose sound system
    NOW WE ARE GETTING RARE. The low miles really makes the car special.

    • @LSswapGarage1
      @LSswapGarage1 4 года назад

      Not actually true for 1989. G92 was not triggered by J65 and G80. That was true for 1987 but not 1988 and newer. Now of course being the other way around G80 and J65 along with the KC4 oil cooler (all L98's came with the oil cooler regardless) along with the GW6 3.27 gear set were triggered by the G92 performance axle option.

      1426 cars in 1989 had the G92 performance Axel option, yes in 1989 over 30,000 cars had G80 limited slip rear Axel, and you had to ask for J65 4 wheel disc brakes, some 12,800 cars had this. It’s my understanding that if you knew what boxes to check you could have G92 on anything. 1LE was specifically a hard top car. And you had to ask for AC delete and ask for G80, G92, and J65.

    I loved that car! My first car was an 83 TransAm and also briefly had a 91 Z28. Some important notes were that starting in '91, you couldn't get T-Tops and 350. That 89 had the tops and the 350. Also, in 1990, they upgraded the interior. The 1990 dash and automatic shifter share the same as the 1991-92.
    As far as the 1-LE package, it was a road racing package. I'm not sure of all the details on how to order from the dealer, but my sister bought one used in the late '90s, and didn't realize what she had. The 1-LE package came w/ a 350ci engine, Air Conditioning, PWR Lock/Window, and Fog Light delete. No T-Tops either. The baffled gas tank was for road racing, so that the fuel pump wouldn't run dry in the corners. The brakes were different. From what I heard a while back, were "quick change" brakes. They just pivot'd up so the pad could be swapped quickly. Aluminum drive shaft.... Rear discs and posi axel (on both the Z28 and the Pontiac Formula / TransAm you had to specify the Z-Rated Tire upgrade/performance axel upgrade... and with that, you got the 150 mph speedometer..... if you didn't opt for the Z Rated tires, and only got the V Rated.... u got a 120mph speedo and the rev limiter kept you under that speed.... Thanks for bringing back my Teen years!!!!! Cheers!!!

    Price was maybe a little high, but these cars are climbing in value fast. If you have a mint show car with under 50k miles they are going in the $20k Range and under 30k miles they are in the $30k Range.
    So they weren’t “that rare” but they are an icon and hold lots of nostalgia points. Show up to a car show or a cruise night and you’ll turn a lot of heads and get a crowd because most of them were hacked up, beat on, raced and totaled. A mint, low mile, bone stock IROC is rare these days.
    I would have guessed $45k range for this car. The price was high but these cars will continue to appreciate..
    To the haters on these cars, they are actually nice and torquey and from stoplight to stoplight they will put you in the seat. I just drove a Porsche Carrera 4S that does 12.3 1/4 mile and didn’t feel that different than the IROC between stoplights. In the 1/4 mile drag it’s the top end of the motor that peters out. The Porsche pulls hard when you wind it out and will smoke the IROC in a drag race. It’s low end torque but it’s fun. You can take corners faster than you’d think and the handling is superior to the average car today. The 80s brakes are a little lackluster and no ABS.
    The interior quality is not the best and you have to remove panels and add insulation to get rid of squeaks and rattles..
    It’s one of the most fun cars to drive and I drive a lot of cars.. I’ve had 3 IROCs and they were all great, reliable cars and easy to work on.
    Another point, the 5-speed was only available with the 5.0 engine but with the G92 option the manual could turn faster 1/4 mile than the 5.7 auto. There was only a 10 hp difference between the 5.0 and 5.7 TPI engines. The TPI was actually designed for the 305 so it worked more efficiently and held back the 350. The G92 manual had 3.45 gears out back..

    Sure seems like some just aren't paying attention. This car has the 5.7L Tuned Port Injection engine. Rated 240 hp net. Thats 300 or a little more at the flywheel. Couldn't get the manual trans with this engine. The aluminum case 5 speed wasn't strong enough to be reliable behind this engine. Earlier throttle body injected IROCs don't compare. I think the price is a little too high, but i understand why it went for 55K.
    We need to understand that even though these cars were mass produced (in its time), 30+ years later, there aren't many of these still alive AND people still remember them dearly. They are becoming harder to find and especially one with such low miles.
    Yes, we can find one with more miles and restore it for way less than 55K, but it won't be the same. A factory stock classic always gains more value than a modified car. These low miles classics will end up in museums and high end car shows (winning many trophies).
    A restored Camaro will look just as good as this one, but the story won't be the same for sure. This is like going back in time and getting into a 1 month old 89 Iroc. Cars like these need to be left alone and let them keep aging properly.
    I own a 91 Z28 and i love it. Still turns heads when im cruising and enjoying my ride. People still walk up to me and begin to tell me how they owned one and regret selling it.
    These are becoming rare with high demand for sure.

    • @CarsAndZebras
      @CarsAndZebras  3 года назад

      The TPI 350 with RPO N10 was rated 240 horsepower. And what was said in the video is that you could get a manual transmission in this car. Meaning a manual transmission in an IROC Z, which you could with the 5.0. All of this information is easily accessible on the Internet, not to mention listed in the video description box.

      @@CarsAndZebras yes look the horsepower ratings on the internet. you'll see an 89 a 350 TPI had 230 horsepower. To get 240 you had to order a special option dual catalytic converters so in theoretically your partially right And it was a big disappointment for people that you couldn't get a 350 with the five speed manual in the third gen's only a 305. The 305 was a horrible engine cuz the boy was so small it shrouded the valves in the head so the breathing was so par with 350 was much better cuz the larger bore unshrouded the valves

    What kills the value of most American cars from the 80’s is the strangled horsepower due to emission standards at the time. Z-28 has a 350 motor but only 190 hp. The 1969 Camaro with a 350 went 325hp. They have torque but begin bottoming out around 90. The 1969 was just getting ready to go at 90mph!
