    I have an '87 convertible IROC sitting in my barn just waiting to be restored to it's former glory. Was my baby brothers car that he bought new, and proudly drove around for years, until the trans went out, and due to health problems, he couldn't afford to fix. He let it sit in his driveway and let it pretty much rot away in the weather until his death at 43, 11 years ago. I was tempted to just call a scrap yard to come get it, but thought that wouldn't be doing right by my brother, so I moved it to my house, and stuffed it in the corner of my old barn, telling myself that one day I would restore it.
    At 63, and stepping into retirement at the end of the year, I see this as one of the projects I'll do to keep me from sitting on the couch all day. Sure, I'll spend way more money and time than it will ever be worth, but I'm sure my brother will be smiling down upon me when he sees his car, rolling down the road again, shiny as the day that he bought it.

      Brian, I had a Maroon - 86 IROC-Z from 1987-1990 ;-) , , , , , , ,
      What a blast to drive and smoke many vettes, porches etc.......
      Went through 2 rear ends, 2 trans, and finally cracked block - only because the electric fans malfunctioned and the temp gauge did not indicate this :-(
      Ended up dropping a 350 69 Camaro engine n replaced the TPI
      Then sold car as I needed funds to go to go back to school / College
      It was more of a love / hate relationship, as it was in the garage getting repaired A LOT ! ! !

      In 1987 I ordered a brand new IROC-Z. She was everything I wanted at the time 5.0 tpi 5 speed T-tops gray interior, awesome car at the time. 2 months later they came out with the convertible. I had to have it. I got an 1987 1/2 20th anniversary convertible same setup as the coupe but a red leather interior. for a while I had two brand new IROC's. The sticker on the convertible was over 20K but worth every penny. To this day I regret selling that car. I have had some awesome cars since then including my 67 chevelle convertible, a C5 corvette convertible and my current 2011 Camaro SS. But I think about that IROC-Z all the time. A beautiful car....

      @jeremythompson9122 4 года назад

      Nothing from the 80's could be called a muscle car other than maybe the 3.8 litre V6 Turbo Buick's...particularly the 87 GNX. These were decent looking cars but offered no real performance. Most of the 70's and the whole decade of the 80's sucked for gearheads who wanted more than just basic transportation. Wasn't until the early to mid 90's when Detroit finally figured out how to make real power while still complying with smog laws

      Those cars were so easy to steal !
      My girlfriend bought a new IROC in 1986. It was stolen 6 months later. She was found two weeks later with all kinds of parts missing, including the t-tops. The car was filled with water from a bad storm. The insurance company wouldn't total it, and I helped her get the IROC repaired.

    A NICE TRICK FOR IROC OWNERS
    Fog lights turn off when you turn on the high beams, By relocating the fog lamp ground wire from the high beam circuit and relocated it to a true ground,
    The fog lights will stay on when you use the high-beams. i was a gm tech long ago
    (fog lamps get their ground through the high beam bulb's filament circuit to ground, when voltage is applied to the high beam lamp the fog circuit loses it's ground and they turn off)

    Great video. Iroc-z's are my favorite cars as I graduated HS in 1988 so I remember a lot of this! Unfortunately many Irocs were sold with the base 4bbl and that lowly L03 170 hp motor which gave the irocs a bad name on the streets. It was good for marketing and giving people options like the 1960's but hurt the performance image. The one thing Ford did right was to give the Mustang GT and LX 5.0 their top dog motor thus making them all "fast". All Iroc's should have came with TPI motors only IMO

      Donnis Bagby I graduated in 87, so these were dream cars right out of high school. Must be a circumstance of geography, but I've never seen an IROC without a TPI motor. Until watching this vid, I thought that was the standard engine with the 350 becoming optional in 87. The only TBI/4bbl motors we ever saw were in Z-28's.

    • @EarthSurferUSA

      I graduated a bit earlier in 81. I was into dirt bikes at the time, but the car guys in my rural area were rebuilding 2nd generation, (worn out through the 1st generation owner by 1980), Mustang's, Camaro's, Cutlas 442's, Chevell's and other classics from the late 60's to early 70's. Oh yea, the Nova's, lots of Nova's. Some of them did a very nice job back then, and some of those guys do restoration today.
      The cars may not be produced anymore, but the opportunity still lives because of them. Thank God for our free market. It's a blast. :)

    Performance tip: If you have one with a TPI motor, (temporarily) take out the air filters and remove those four silly, plastic restrictor plates so your engine can breathe. Then go to a shop and have them replace the muffler with one that actually lets a reasonable amount of exhaust flow through it (so you exhaust pressure equalizes more with the intake pressure, preventing you from floating a valve). At this point you might as well spend around $30 on some performance air filters.
    I'm not sure how many horsepower this will gain you (I'm guessing from 15-30, which isn't bad for a 210-245 HP motor), but I was able to do 0-60 in a bit over 5.5 seconds and a quarter mile at about 14.2 @ 101 MPH after cooling the intake with a couple bags of ice. This was a 1989 Iroc with a 350, 700R4 auto, 255 ZR-16 Michelin XGT tires, and a 2.77(!) rear axle.

    • @boxfancb
      @boxfancb 2 дня назад

      I saw that intake mod on a magazine once and did it, switched to K&N filters and put an airfoil on the throtle body. Also went with eldelbrock tubular set and new cat back ending with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. It kept things quiet but there was a lot of noise and smoke coming from the tires👍

    I had a 87 with the 5.7, t tops, leather, and so on. I then moved to Maine on a dirt road with no garage. When the economy crashed, I had to sell it. I had bought it from the original owner in western Mass. A week or so after I sold the car, I got a phone call from the guy who bought it and he had removed the spare tire and found a letter in a sip lock bag, which was from the selling dealer, (Putnam Chevrolet-Buick, Winchendon, Mass ). The car was one of only 25 ordered with every option available. I have a copy of that letter, and if I had seen that letter, I either would have put the car in storage, up on blocks, or sold it for way more than the $4000 I got for it. O well. The Pontiac is the show car now and the iroc will be the daily/fun street racer. I dumped so much money into making the Pontiac restored and beautiful that I am afraid to even drive it when it's ready. The iroc is more of a traditional project car that I will have fun with and can make a racer with performance mods that would not be worth it on the trans am.

    You failed to mention a very important point. I know this to be true as i owned one. Because Chevy dropped out of IROC at the end of 1989, there were a very few, around 6000, 1990 5.7 IROC z28 produced in 1989. This unit was only available without the split roof and only came with the 4 speed hydromatic transmission. The Corvette type L98 engine produced 245 base HP and 345# FT Torque. Some have said the the HP rating was understated, as it had a top speed of about 150 MPH, and could do 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds. This car was a screamer, and could beat many later model 1990's era Z28 Camaros with more HP off the line, but would loss to them on the high end. When I sold my unit with 148K on the clock it was still running 0 to 60 between 5.8 and 6.0 seconds.

    Another trick on 5.0 TPI engines was to bypass the throttlebody's coolant with a piece of conduit for summer months or warm climate states. It really helped only in town or in traffic, stop-n-go kind traffic, as it would lower the air temperature going into the intake.

The most money I spent was on the exhaust getting the Y pipe worked and a Flowmaster custome single muffler w/ith 2 3/4 tips.Then I got the ECM reprogrammed and added a 100 shot of NOS. I didn't break into the twelve's but I consistently ran 13.20's. Not bad for that era.

    I had an 86 Z28 not an IROC but it was every bit as much of a stunningly cool car. Ran awesome with even the little 305 and 4 barrel. Mine was a freak of nature , i could run circles around every and any Fox body Mustang around.

    It's funny that they were only making 245hp with the TPI. I turned my TPI into a 410hp engine with just heads, cam, intake manifold, exhaust and a tune. and still has plenty of power off idle so it's still a street car. peak power at 5761rpm. Chevy was holding back big time as they could have produced the same engine for the same cost or less at that time.

      @Texas_Cruiser It was an L98. The intake design is most of what made it an L98. Once I changed the heads and intake for brodix ik180 and Edelbrock proflo manifold it's not really an L98 anymore.

    88 Was also the year the 305 and 350 TPI's got Roller Rockers. Which helped increase fuel efficiency. I used to have a 88 IROC-Z in Red with the 700R4 here in the UK. It was super rare so attracted allot of attention where ever i went !!. Sounded great with Flowmasters too. I also added a 150hp Nitrous kit which helped pick up the engine a bit !.

    What's sad is that it took Ford until 1999 to get the GT to these power levels. A 1989 IROC had 240 HP optional? A 1999 Mustang GT was only 260. Lol.

      @jrvbamafan1 7 лет назад +3

      OFFRD you're comparing a 350 cu engine that made 240 hp to a 281 cu engine that made 260....lol. which one is the real winner here

    • @4-LOW
      @4-LOW 7 лет назад +1

      Those arguments are completely irrelevant. Ford made a 302 and a 351 during this time. GM had a 305 and a 350. Either company could put either of their V8s into these cars. What we got is what they chose to bring to market. So we must compare what we had. I'm a Ford guy, but Ford was always way behind GM with these cars. In 1993, the Camaro got 275 HP and soon thereafter 285 HP with their base V8 Camaro. The base Ford V8 Mustang didn't reach those levels until 2005. Mustang fans have always watched Ford play catch-up a decade behind GM. It's sad.

      why would ford drop money in R/D when the mustang ousold the firebird and camaro almost 2-1? They gave the people what they wanted. What kind of power did a 2003 camaro make? oh wait...

    ohh man I hate the 90-92s downgraded dash. my favorite body inside & out is 82-84. drop in 383 good 2 go

    • @houseofno
      @houseofno 4 года назад +1

      Downgraded? I respectfully disagree. The 90s Fbodies got probably the best iteration of third gen F-body interior, which I considered to be pretty spartan and plain, given the beautiful exterior of these cars. GM obviously blew all of their development money on the sleek sheetmetal. Mustangs had a better interior 87 and later, but I still envied the sleeker exterior of GM's ponycars.

      @@houseofno moving all the gauges into a single cluster just looks ugly to me, looks like it belongs in a chevy truck. They were better looking when they were in multiple rally style gauges and i dont like how the dash got rounded ether.
