Grizzly stalking moose calves, Denali National Park, Alaska

  • Shortly before sunset in Denali National Park, a moose defends her two calves from a hungry grizzly in the Spring. This scene played out for about an hour. Recorded with a Canon DSLR.
Update (December 2021): This video was up for a number of years before I noticed it was starting to get large amounts of views so I'll address a couple of the comments I've seen below. I had changed out the audio when i put these clips together due to some people talking nearby during much of the encounter. I didn't have video editing software knowledge at the time and I agree the volume is much too loud. Unfortunately, I'm unable to adjust it now without replacing the video and losing the view count - sorry. For those wondering if the bear caught up to the moose calves - no, not while they were in sight. After the moose took the calves through the river, the bear lost the scent and was running in the opposite direction as the encounter ended. So thanks for watching. Despite the age of this video, I'm glad some people are still enjoying the moment.
Some of the footage from this encounter was used in National Geographic's World's Deadliest Animals TV series ("Lady Killers" - original air date October 2013).

Had to be a very young bear. A full grown Grizzly would not run from a female moose.

    • @Nagy50Magyar
      @Nagy50Magyar 4 года назад +1

@@imjinrat2325 I saw a video of a female grizzly wrestle right through the antlers of a reindeer that tried to stand its ground. The bear backed away several times, but finally charged right through the weapons, overpowered the reindeer, and quickly killed it. The bear in this video is a subadult, recently independent from its mother. Moose mothers have to run from mature bears, or they are killed. If a big bear separates the calf from the mother, there is nothing she can do to save it. Trying too sincerely could mean she becomes part of the meal, too. Thus, moose calves are a major source of bear protein. In Yellowstone, brown bears are the primary cause of bison deaths.

    • @imjinrat2325

@@Nagy50Magyar Geez I forgot all about this video. Watching it again I found it interesting that the moose headed to where people are, probably hoping it would be a place of safety.

When the Mother Moose and her young at the end crossed the Rest stop road and the creek, the Grizzly Bear was still trying to sniff them out crossing the road and the creek himself. He wasn't giving up just yet. If the Grizzly was a massive adult male he probably would of got one small moose...This grizzly looked like just a juvenile to me . Thank's for the upload.

Moose are more than capable of defending themselves from a grizzly. They weigh anywhere between 360kgs and 700kgs. If you get kicked by a moose in the head it will crush your skull and if it kicks you anywhere else it's going to result in broken bones and possibly internal bleeding. Don't be fooled.

Florida images, Very nice Photography, & an Excellent Video as the Result. By My thoughts, the Grizzly, wasn't very Old? Say maybe Four to Five years. Later did the Calf's, both Survive? Or did one get Taken later on? In Viewing such Piece's, I'm always Torn between the Calmness of Nature & Her Brutality, Vs the Raw Viciousness or the Reality of it Also. The Final Outcome is the Element I'm After. To be Honest here. I'm usually pulling for the Under Dogs 🐕🐕in the Majority of Situations though? In this Scenario I hope the Calf's Survived the Day, & also Your Filming Day? Courious Wise 🦉🦉 is that a Favorite or Very Familiar Place, You are Filming them at? Because as I said it's Great Work. Thank You.

Thanks Robert. So after the moose took the calves through the river, they ended up going west while the bear kept searching and moving towards the east so I doubt that night they saw each other again. The bear did look smaller than full adult - I think you're probably about right on the age range. I've only been to Denali twice so it was just good luck catching this on my last visit.

Moose have really long legs which help them to run fast, up to 56km/h over short distances.

How terrifying that would be to come jogging along just then. Alaska must be a most dangerous place.

You have to admire the beauty of the calves and the grizzly as they look to both be in healthy condition.

You can never really appreciate their true size until you see them in comparison to something @1:53 . Moose are basically the same size as an s10 pick-up lol.

I was wondering what the person who owned the truck was thinking, unless it belonged to the person with the camera. Imagine coming out of the washroom to that!

This is power of a mother

A lot of people in the comments are underestamating the mother... A mother moose is one of the worst mothers to piss of, 'causke if you can't do something that relly scares her, she will hunt who ever killed her baby till she can kill them. The only reason she don't relly hurts the Bear is becuase he hasen't touched the baby yet.

      Lunar,
You are too optimistic with the mother moose ability to defend her calves. I have seen a video of a black bear snatched a calf away from the mother moose. The mother moose offered very little resistance and left her baby for the bear to consume. That was a black bear, not even a brown bear. The sad reality is herbivores evolved to be eaten by predators. Even elephants are hunted by lions.
