Katmai, Alaska -- Noted for volcanoes, brown bears, pristine waterways, abundant fish and rugged coastline.
In 1912, a volcano called novarupta, erupted and was the most powerful volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The explosion was heard 700 miles away in Juno and ash fell as far away as Texas. The valley became buried by the volcanic ash.
Katmai National Park is a bear-viewing destination. Katmai is known for its brown bear population with over 2,000 in the national park. You can see them, especially during the salmon run. Alaskan brown bears are the world's largest carnivores. The one question everyone asks is, where is Brooks Falls? Get a close-up view here!

I love this video so much. I love the story the narrator is narrating this beautiful piece of landmark. I love how the bears and humans can coexist without fear of the others. I love that brown bears can’t hunt fish without humans flashing lights as though they’re art museum. I love bears, period.

Bears and humans can coexist in Katmai, but lord help you if you set up your campsite along or near the bear trails 👣 or...you'll end up like TIMOTHY Treadwell.
In Air Force I used to live about 45 minutes from Katmai. Great day trip for hiking, fishing, and bear viewing.

The bears here aren’t afraid of people.. so that’s how Timothy Treadwell survives for 13 summers! Not because he was one of the bears and could control them, like he believed.

Tourists come all seasons, over time bears get used to them and simply ignore them. Same with safaris in Africa and India. Still don't try to pet them and listen to the rangers who know them better.

- in adddition, I was told that when there's an abundance of food (in this case salmon) the usual territorial brown/grizzly bear tolerates other bears being near by which extends to humans.

This is the park that Timothy Treadwell lost his life and the life of his girlfriend. A grizzly attacked and killed them both. Although Timothy was not the brightest bulb on the tree, it was still terribly sad and tragic that they both lost their lives.

This very nature reserve actually was were they were camped that last night it was a combination of his poor choices like staying on at the start of winter when bears trying to get fed up enough to hibranate and because of not enough fish and berries when the bears needed it that led to him and Amy been eaten

I was just watching the live cam at the Falls. Does anyone else find themselves rooting for those salmon to make it up the Falls? I am glad when a bear gets a meal but the salmon are just so determined I want them to succeed!
