The air-cooled Porsche 911 was in production for three decades, with significant changes almost every year. In this episode of the Carmudgeon Show, Derek Tam-Scott, a hyphenated walking encyclopedia on vintage Porsches, chronicles the production changes. Memorize this, and you'll be able to identify the model year of any air-cooled Porsche 911.
We promise we've made this topic far more interesting than you'd expect - with updates on the Piëchisode, unintended defecation, other ICONS episodes, and Jason's profanely-named Dodge Grand Caravan, Jynah.
Plus, a 911 Spotter's Quiz at the end, just for fun! - Авто/Мото
I would join the Poverty Hagcast network.
Given the sound of laughter of all of us reading that comment, we would too!
This is as much a display of Derek’s wonderful mind as the 911. Thank you for both.
Well said!
I know I don't care about 911s but I was just in awe of someone exactly in their element lol
D: “Ugh, god this is so monotonous. I’m so sorry”
J: “No. No. Alright, Turbos used narro-“
D: “WRONG”
J: “Right, thought so.”
haaaaa! so funny these 2
More v a n g i n a please.
A lot of respect for making the episode for the "niche" audience. It wasn't me, but I love that y'all will do this. The last 911 episode was a snoozefest for me, this one a little less so just because of how specifically nerdy this was I found the depth of it interesting. I'll retain almost none of what I just listened to, and I don't even care that much about 911s anymore, but it was still a cool listen.
Also, MASSIVE credit to the poor soul that had to go through and add all the inserts.
I got 1 correct on the quiz, and I'd call it a lucky guess.
All 3 of us loved this 911 geek out!
The four of us!
Five!

Seven!
Glad the plan for the Piëch-pisode evolved into a fuller Icons video!
But one thing: will it be as long as a normal Carmudgeon (1hr~) or Icons (15-25 mins) episode? Or since there will be a Carmudgeon afterwards discussing the episode, will the Icons just touch on the biggest events from Piëch's work and the Carmudgeon will go deeper?
We will not be satisfied until this turns into a 10 episode HBO miniseries
absolutely digging the promise of a Piech-Icons episode.. :)
@@Epachecoand if they don't release it till end of february, we will riot. For real!
I knew nothing about air-cooled 911s going into this episode and I didn't think I retained any of it, but I got 100% on the final quiz. I can't wait to ruin my next dinner party. Thanks, Derek!
Let’s not gloss over the awesome visual aids while Hyphen drops the knowledge. Legend.
To whoever is responsible for the "woo-hooo-hoo". Thanks, that needed to be there!
The Duck Tales woohoo? Jake did that one, and we all made poopie in our pants laughing over it.
@@TheCarmudgeonShow And now you all have the answer to the question at 7:54!
Here I thought I was nerdy about cars, this is a different level of mental illness. please keep it coming i love this
The airplane reference was just great. I wonder how many people get these now!
Give that editor a RAISE! Great job making me LOL!
Noooo! We already pay him $5. We can't afford $5.01.
@32:03
If there ever was an episode that's gonna be replayed a ton, this is gonna be it for me.
lol Jason's look at the camera at 14:23 when DTS is describing the number of screws on the horn
Finally! Derek Tam hyphen Scott gets to unleash his full rain man. Great episode for all the Porsche trainspotters.
Derek - are there any other brands that you can give us the deep dive on?
Full “rain-man” is hilarious
Guys.... Derek is an encyclopedia! What an amazing knowledge 😊 loved the episode 🎉
14:38 50% reduction in screwage is very familiar concept.
Sometimes, 100% 😁😁
Seriously though, great episode, was always curious. That's the sort of stuff I have come to expect but it's such interesting minutiae
Edit: I'm also into the 80s by this point 40 mins in and surprised to not hear the Targa appearing in '67 and the soft window disappearing in '69, an easy personal tell I have.
Also, the big change made in '82 was the appearance of the first 911 cabrio. This also reminds me just how much I want a G50 M491 3.2, what a corker that oughta be!
I'm also realizing I know too much about these stupid cars to be thinking about and interacting with fuch-ing Boxsters, god I wish I had 911 money
Is this a rerun of the same episode? I thought i heard already about georges collection hitting the market??
I was sooooo wrong. The fact they mentioned george threw me off!😂
I wont remember even a fraction of the differences, BUT I could listen DTS talk about them for hours. Dude has a supercomputer for a brain. Not bad for a 90 year old.
Is this a reupload or am I just a clairvoyant? I know I have heard the first few minutes of this episode before.
That’s my exact feel, foreman collection, R129, marketplace being hit, 1957 corvair…
No I think they literally had this exact conversation in a previous episode. They must be screwing with us.
Okay last week they mentioned all of the same things. Maybe they were required by hagerty to mention it.
Maybe they are being held hostage and trying to send us a message
@@nickzhang7862 perhaps. I bet hoderdy pagcast network is a clue.
911 facts aside, can we acknowledge that the Piechepisode is actually going to happen, AND is going to be ICONS as well?!?! It's going to be so epic. As for the "hard to get Piech car"... my guess is Porsche 917. I'd imagine a veyron or phaeton is pretty easy to get ahold of for these two...
At 38 minutes when Derek mentioned the high beam logo, “Everyone knows what that means” , I swear some people just think it means the headlights are on. And with drls people don’t have the headlights on sometime but they’re having their retinas burned out by the digital dash that hasn’t dimmed. It’s deeply maddening that something so simple as are my headlights on and my high beams aren’t destroying other drivers vision is so difficult for some people. There’s my Carmudgeon style rant.
Because Derek hasn't driven any cars made after 1998, he's not aware of this problem.
I finally had time to sit down and dedicate this podcast to a visual medium - I usually Carmudgeon myself on commutes. So glad I got to this! I’m very new to ID’ing Porsches so this was great.
Blessing yet another Monday with car talk! Have you two thought about doing a minivan episode discussing the history of the minivan, or maybe going through the FIA's historical database and talking about some of the more obscure cars homologated for competition?
I love how Derek just goes off with no cheat sheets or teleprompters
Sacco Mercedes guide next?
I had to stop listening to this in my car almost immediately and wait until I got home to watch on RUclips since I am a newbie to 911’s. This was helpful!
Boutta cut 7 pales of potatoes and I see these two beauty’s blessing my timeline once again, today is a good day.
Astounding. What is Hyphen's range? Does he charge at 150 kw? Battery pack? Air cooled, I presume? Amazing....
Oh my God, I get it android! I was thinking the same!
Rain man, I learned a lot of information for the early 911s. Now I have to continue listening for the G50 cars because I'm VERY intimate with the 2 hotrods I've been building for 8 years. I devoted my life to these inanimate objects that have become works of love and patience. I can't tell you the amount of joy they bring...the nuances are endless. OK-EDIT: The beauty of the 911 is in the mechanicals (for me) and you gotta get those manicured nails dirty to really have the experience.
Never been so excited to get the clap from Derek!
This is one of my favorite episodes
Not a boring episode, watched it 8 times already
You two must go to Retromobile in Paris, late Jan 2024....amazing car show!
The new edits (Jake) are a great subtle addition. 👍
Duck tales, that had me rollin
Outstanding. I will listen to this over and over again.
Thank you for this episode. We love to nerd out on all the details.
Have listened to this several times. Derek’s knowledge is encyclopedic. Is it useful info? Pretty much like baseball stats but actually interesting. Thanks Derek and Jason.
LOVED this episode! Thanks!
I'll use this episode to help me fall asleep for this entire winter
Amazing memory and knowledge dude. I bow down to you, Derek.❤❤❤
Great episode! Really enjoyed this!
I loved this episode and will watch it again tomorrow, taking notes. Right up my (admitted narrow) alley.
You guys are the best ❤️
Thank you! Definitely asked for this :)
Excellent episode. I appreciate the detail
That's 3 podcasts in the last 4 days I've heard "wax poetic" used. That's more than I've heard that phrase in the last couple years prior.
Being an air cooled 911 nerd myself, I loved this video. Even better was that I learned more helpful details for my 911 carspotting crack habit. Thank you DTS!
Thanks so much for this! I was in fact the target audience for this. I wrote notes! However, I only got 1/4 on the quiz... Would pay for that spotter guide matrix!
Fantastic episode
Cinematic gold 52:43
Yay! Spotters episode!
Guys. The little Duck Tales jingle made me spit my Cherry Coke on my steering wheel.
Now to get back at you, just to make you angry, I'm going to buy an air-cooled 911 and swap in the 2.0L Atkinson cycle engine and CVT from a Ford C-Max.
Once upon a time I could have done this with Karmann Ghias. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed this episode. It’s my brand of nerdery.
Please do talk about E-Types someday. They’re such significant cars in the development of sporting vehicles.
Another great episode guys!
I love this episode so much 😅
The VW wheels Derek was referencing with the half moons are the Le Castelette wheels. Nice forged, lightweight wheels mostly found in 14" on Cabriolets, but also foind in Canada in 15" on Syncro B3 Passats.
This is not boring!!!!
Best episode
H5 is a halogen bulb form factor, the 996s with halogens use them.
There are some motorcycles that use H5 as well.
awesome
H5 is the fluted lens, H4 being the most hated for light distribution-No sugar scoops
also, they had the antenna sort of nipple on the front left wing until 84, so thats snother way to tell 84s and 85s, other than the sugar scoops and the interior vents i think.
also another cool fact, i BELIEVE that Porsche were the first and the last ever to use kjet/ bosch CIS, as they developed it in conjunction in Dr.Fuhrmanns carrera rs prototype and was standard in the US 73T in order to pass emissions, as the carbs wouldnt cut it, and the E and S had MFI.
I'd like you all to know that you could talk about the ford edge for an entire episode and at least 70% of us would turn up to listen. Personally, I put you guys on when I do the dishes and it's the only way I get anything done
Don't tempt us. :P
I love the editing here..
that brown 1975 in the quiz is so rad!
Look at you guys enjoying someone else having to deal with inserts!
Excellent, thanks. I didn't realize just how little the 911 changed during the air-cooled years. Too bad, so sad that they are far too expensive for me to play with, despite being technically outpaced by the VW Super Beetle for most of their run!
Thank God for Corvettes... not that they progressed much during the _Malaise,_ either. The chassis was almost completely unchanged from 1963 through 1982. Luckily, that was all a long time ago, now.
Thank you, this has cured my insomnia. 😂
First time I ever got an A-plus scoring zero on the test but I'll take it.
50% on the quiz, but that is much better than the 0% I would have scored before watching. I loved this even if I couldn't master all of it. Thank you!
this was great on the oil cooled cars, now some liquid cool coolant stuff. I failed the test on the end, but thank you for A+ grade, haa.
Good car bad engine or bad car good engine podcast, please????
Best episode since the start of the universe. I would love for JC and Derek Tam Hyphen Scott to do the same format for cars sold to public for rally homologation. It would be good to kick off in late 60s as an intro but not sure there was homologation back then. Can do group 4, B and A and finally WRC era. Or just pick models like A110, Escort, Renault 5, 205, Evo, WRX, Quattro, Stratos, Integrale and 037, 5 Turbo, Celica. F lets even do the Golf Rallye.
Now do the VW Beetle...think of it kinda like a prequel to this one! 😂
I learned something... Chmsl ? "chimsel" is the rear higher mounted centerline brake light.. Cool ! The amazing thing here is that Derek knows that stuff for Lancias, mercedes, and probably countless other brands also ;-)
Centre High Mounted Stop Lamp. CHMSL. I believe that's the official government term for them.
i guess im one of the 3. im 56 my son is 30 and thinks hes so Porsche smart. Wait till I show him I’m super Savant Porsche now.! this was autisticly freaking awesome thank you!
Best of the best!’n😊
Derekpedia !!! 😁
Could you do the same episode on 944/968?
DTS' knowledge continues to baffle me
This reminds me of my Aspberger's nephew telling me everything he knows about dinosaurs.
You mentioned the 356 Speedster (regarding its relation to the RS America), but neglected to talk about the 911 Speedster. I thought Hyphen would even go into the rarity of the narrow body Speedsters and their values relative to the wide body variants. Ultimate … psst. /s
We now need a water cooled 911 walk through
that was awesome to watch someone knowing about 911s that much !! yet , TARGA ÜBER ALLES !! Add to that " and you forgot " my spec. sonderwunsch factory flachbau m505 w. 5 spd / glove box / 930 - Targa in 84A aka red ! ( w. that you should know what year it is since it was a one year sonderwunsch option only ) if you wana make the same show but someone knowing the all the dif. btw 66 - 77 aka early broncos hit me up ... LMAO
Piechisode ?
Fingers crossed you guys get that W12 Phaeton.
I am betting Iltis
Have you guys saw any of THE SQUIDD documentaries? I wonder what's your opinion on them!
What? No power point! Oh, right. Derek has it covered! 😃😃😃
Come to Baltimore and do an episode on 1:64 cars with me! ;)
I watched the whole thing, even though I don't like 911s that much.
Porsche started using 6 speed with 1991 968.
i was born in December of 1972......i want a similar 911....i know it would be a model year 73....
PIECHISODE?! Don’t tempt me with a good time!
i don't even know why people prefers to listen it, i mean now there's also Jake with his tasteful inserts
Porsche 914 - There is no substitute.
You can forget about the 911
I love Jason reassuring Derek. I guess Jason isn't a complete asshole :P wonderful knowledge by the way. I listened to it all the way to the end. I will file this way with other useless information rattling around in my brain. Also can we get more singing from Jason.
Place your bets on what time code Mercedes will be mentioned.
lol several times they brought up Mercedes
lol Duck Tales
Jay Leno recently pointed out the makers of the George Foreman Grill initially approached Hulk Hogan. But Hogan didn’t like the product particularly because it didn’t have an on-off switch. He thought unplugging it to turn it off was cheap. After he declined they approached George Foreman and after a few years he banked $150 million. That’s gotta sting for Hogan.
