Never use a filter wrench to tighten an oil filter, only tighten by hand
Good to know!
Clearest video on the Kawasaki FR651V on RUclips. Thanks very much.
Pretty job overall. You did good by removing the oil filter while the oil was still draining, to get more dirty oil to drain. I use the new oil filter box folded lengthwise to place under the filter housing lip so it drains into my container. Always clean oil filter mounting surface with a paper towel (or similar) to ensure a good seal. Oil drain is plastic on plastic with an O-ring seal, so easy does it! Good habits are a nice practice, and it's fun! Also Home Depot and Lowes's have these kits now as does my Kubota dealer. Thanks...
Awesome insight, thanks!
Is that a 13/16th deep socket for the spark plug change out? What is the Gap? Would it be best to make sure that the gas filter isn't coming into contact with any of the metal parts there? Vibrations could potentially wear a hole into the gas filter. Before installing the new air filter, I think it would best to blow the crap from under the old air filter before removing it. That way I would eliminate any chance of sending debris into the open air intake hose and on into the engine.
Nice video good information will be doing mine this weekend.
I have a small plastic cup I put under mine. Works well
Great video! Big help.
Glad it helped!
Well done. I will say that once you start sucking the oil out with an extractor you won't go back to draining. I suck it out and when I'm finished I open the drain petcock and barely get a dribble of oil. Quick, and a lot less clean up.
Woah that is good insight. I’ll look up some videos and maybe try that next time!
@@AJLoDato22 Thats what I use. I got mine years ago from Griots.
If the warranty is done just get a Fram. I’ve used the orange one for 15 years. I used Mobil 1, 10W-30. The air filter and spark plugs go OEM. I gave that mower to my sister. Doesn’t burn oil either. I got the Toro Vtwin motor on my Toro. Seems fine so far. Ironically now toro is putting on Koehler and Kawasaki and much less of the Toro V twin. The Toro I have wouldn’t get build up of grass like you showed in the video. Apparently the air blows out debris so it doesn’t pile up.
Thank you, I don't know why the owners manual doesn't spec the filter you need!
good video!
Thanks!
I've watched couple different videos for my kawasaki fr651v and all are different from what my oil drain looks like...no nipple on mine just a black octagon shape piece. That looks like ima have to twist off with a tool???
You may have to, shouldn’t be too bad!
I'm a bit of a profectionist. I always use a torque wrench to set the spark plugs. TFAR is not my thing.
You're never supposed to tighten and oil filter with an oil wrench. Always hand tighten. Oil filters don't need to be that.😁
What'd you use for top off as the kit only comes with 2 quarts ?
I thought the same and had another quart ready to top it off. But the 2 quarts filled mine perfect.
@@AJLoDato22 well thats good hopefully it ll fix me up as well Thanks
I have a 2015 Cub Cadet rider that came with the Kawasaki FR651V engine. This one has the rating of 21.5 gross HP @ 3600rpm (does yours?) Note: I never received a manual of any kind with it. I was curious if this kit of yours would work on mine and what NGK plug # came with this kit? Thanks so much for your valuable time on helping a Military Veteran out here.
Yes sir mine is the 21.5hp as well. The spark plug is a BPR4ES. Appreciate your service 🇺🇸
@@AJLoDato22 OK. That is a NGk, right?
@@toddrhine7648 Yup!
@@AJLoDato22 Thanks so much for being prompt on answering me back. Just curious do you know what carb it has on it?
@@toddrhine7648 Unfortunately I am not sure about the carburetor.
What diameter tubing did you use for draining the oil?
I don’t have my original hose anymore, but the outlet OD measure ~1/2”
Where did you get your full kit from?
I put a link in the description. Hope that helps!
What is the spark plug gap? Thanks
It may be in the FR651 owners manual. But I don’t remember.
Do I just tighten the spark plug as tight as I can get it?
I wouldn’t go crazy, the torque spec is very low. So just snug is fine!
@@AJLoDato22 Thank you!!
tighten, you will feel the crush washer crushing then it will get harder to turn, only turn maybe max 16th or less turn once crush washer is crushed
You should always check gap on the plugs before installing. You also over tightened the hell out of the plugs..Never use an oil filter wrench to install a filter. Hand tight plus a 1/4 or so turn.
Yo I changed my oil and it turned off and I tried turning it back on and it white smoked and ain’t turn on yet “ just happened rn”
Hmm that is really odd, I’m not sure how that would happen.
Don’t have an oil filter wrench? I have 3 different sizes with handles that fold to get in tight places. If a oil filter is put on with a wrench by a gorilla, you will never get it off by hand. I have had to use tin snips to cut teeth into the band that grips the filter. The worst removal was finally driving an old screwdriver through the body of the filter and turning it off. Or the gorilla that got hired to change oil at the Cadillac dealer. The customer’s first warranty oil change by him leaked. He put the filter on so tight, it cut the gasket. My new Caddy. This weekend I am dividing up all my tools to give my married homeowner 24 year old grandson after using my dad’s and mine for the last 60 years.
What size spark plug wrench did you need?
13/16” (21mm)
@@AJLoDato22 Thanks - I noticed mine also has that oil drain nipple on it instead of the hose. What size hose did you use?
I forgot, it was something I had laying around. I would grab a micrometer to check. It's well worth it for how easy it takes the oil change! @@mapex311
Can you tell me what the spark plug # used
For the Kawi FR651V, it’s a:
NGK BPR4ES gapped to .7-.8mm
Thanks. Whats the numbers for the air filter and gas filter. I can’t see in video to fast. I order the whole kit but have to wait 2 weeks. It might come faster if I piece it together. Thanks
you never tighten a oil filter with a wrench. Hand tight and then snug it 1/2 to 3/4 turn by hand is fine. same for a car/truck. Also when draining the oil you don't unscrew the nut all the way out or you get a mess like you had. simple knowledge really.
I got similar feedback from others. Learned a little on this one!
@@AJLoDato22I didn't mean to come across as rude. Just pointing out a few things. We all learn as we go. Thanks for the post. I did learn a little bit about my IKON XD
Where you get the kit?
It was off Amazon. I forgot to post the link, but will soon.
Link posted now for the kit.
How do you remove the engine cover?
For the air filter? If so, just lift on the two tabs on top of the air box closest to the rear.
@@AJLoDato22 the engine cover. I need to replace the spark plug cables. Rodents chewed mine.
And thanks for responding so fast.
Once you remove the top plastic cover, there is a metal screen with three screws that looks like I need an Allen wrench. I can’t seem to get the correct size.
Mate, if you blew the air filter everytime you operate the machine, there is no need to replace it at 160hrs. The state of yours looks as if you have never cleaned it since you bought the mower.
Yes sir, you are correct. Just bought the mower used before making this video, and wanted to start fresh. Now I blow it out every couple of months and it stays in good shape.

If you care about your engine, put full synthetic in it, not 'synthetic blend'. 👍
