@@MrTigracho The counter disability may be true in boxing, but in MMA, you have other countering options. Elbows can work from the crossguard, and leg-kicks flow surprisingly well from it. Another thing i've discovered but haven't spar-tested yet is straight palm strikes. The moment you pass your hand over your centerline, firing straight punches becomes nigh impossible because the angle is so awkward. This is cause for the countering disability you were mentionning. However you don't get that awkwardness if you throw palm strikes instead. Though they won't be KOing anybody anytime soon, with good hip and shoulder rotation, those shots can have a decent pop to them.

Since a Good Short Uppercut comes Straight Under the Chin and as such if your Already Moving Out the Way it should Whiff Completely if you step Entirely Out the the Foothold Range. You want to use these Big Opportunities to Completely Counterpunch when they're Wide Open. Be Patient and Don't get Hasty. Purposefully even Corner Yourself or Walk them Towards You. If you can get them in Your Short Arm Range your already at an Advantage. Train your Speed and Percision to Hit the Strike at that Decisive Moment. And train the Endurance to Throw Repeatedly Blindingly Fast Combinations off One Big Shot while they're Stunned. Speed, Precision, and Mostly Timing are Key. Learn to Throw Two to Three Jabs a Second. And make the Cross Follow Half Way or Less as your Jab Pulls Back. So it seems as if it connects Right as Your Jab does. And make sure to always Root Those Arms Tucked in Immediatly Following. You want to always have a Guarded Foundation even while Attacking. Always have a Counter and Defense Mounted. One Hand into Other Hand is the Foundation of Boxing. Also learn how to hit the Same Hand from the Same Side again if you Have to like a Jab into a Hook with the Same Hand. How to even use a Lead Hook or Uppercut out of Nowhere. If you constantly switch it up it leaves your Opponent Confused more Often then Not. Never fall Too Hard into One Pattern. But outside of that the Reason I kept mentioning Getting in Point Blank Close. Is you want to Press into Them and Smother Their Arms to make it Harder to Attack Back. Use your Shoulder and Press into Their Lead Hand. This cuts off Their Jab and if your to Their Lead Side. This also makes it really hard with a Boxing Stance for them to Throw Their Cross. And a Good Shell Guard always protecting the Chin and Organs will stop any Half Assed Punch even if it Hurts a Bit. Stopping Aggression with Even More Aggression once your Inside. Press Forehead to Forehead if you have to. But don't stay there Too Long. Keep Moving Shoulder to Shoulder and Duck down to Their Hip on Hooks and it should Graze over Top of the Head. And if your Close and Can't Move Backwards to Dodge an Uppercut try to Move as Far as Possible to the Side Off your Centerline since that's right where the Uppercut will Land and Be. Also my Final Tip of Advice when being Aggressive and Crowding someone Bigger. Is to always when throwing Big Combinations is to Aim for the Arms and Body and not to Head Hunt. This if the Person is Durable and In Good Shape and Can Take a Punch leaves you Wide Open. As such you want to Wear Down Their Body and Arms Overtime. Even if you don't have a lot of Power. If you Keep Hitting the Body Their Chin Eventually has to Open Up. And Slows Down Their Footwork. And hitting the Arms will Slowly Break Them Down. Eventually Slowing Down Their Punches. As well as Slowing Their Ability to Defend Themselves. And suddenly a Person that seems like a Brick Wall becomes Much Easier to Take on and Defeat. Make sure when you do these to try to Hit the Exact Same Spot Repeatedly while still Mixing Up the Attacks. Aim for the Liver, Kidneys, and Solar Plexus in the Middle Upper Core of the Stomach. That place usually isn't Guarded Well by Most Guards except for X Shaped Cross Guards. And Knocks the Wind out of Them if they aren't Braced for It. On The Arms Target the Same Spot on the Bicep Repeatedly. Slowly buy Surely they will Slow if Even just a little. And eventually you will have your Counter Punch Timing come up when they have Slowed Down.
If you move your left arm in the right place, I guess you can do it. But with some combinations, the uppercut is perhaps the best way to open the cross guard from below. Hey Boss! Combining the Cross Arm Guard with more of the Leverage Defense would have been a great bit of skill lesson for folks. The smoother transition from the full prevention of the cross arm to long-combo-forward-movement.... I mean... you aren't going to use the Leverage Defense backing up unless you are crazy or out on your feet :) I find it very effective to use the Leverage Defense to both transition safely back to Outboxing, and clear their guard after you deliver the Cross Arm Guard clash... and I LOVE that you made sure people learned to utilize the clash of guards.... one of the best benefits of Cross Arm Guard IMO.
Was practicing pressure fighting in this guard today and it was very effective against the jab and cross. However, I felt comfortable using my lead hand as the upper hand and the rear as the lower hand...would appreciate your critique on this. The only thing I felt vulnerable to was the left hook
Love it, i Just learned how to use the clinch but this is a good one to try and learn next when pressured. Good insight or tip for when to use this guard. Looking at archies highlights didn't gave me that insight. Great stuff!!
I like what he's doing I'm really impressed all you have to do is put your right forearm across your forehead that will eliminate all the other movement or block everything that coming straight at you not bad coach left-arm should be against your body not away from your body laying the left-arm right across your stomach near your hips lay across your hips like he's doing and block body shots good job
something you can't do with boxing gloves but which helps with bracing for powershots, is putting your thumb under your armpit. The way it makes your hand rest on the shoulder creates a very solid structure. Useful against people who knock your guard around with big loopy punches, but limits your parrying abilities, since it locks your hand in place.
'Very, Instructive. Nice Video. Very Practical.Identified with everything you said.I have included the Cross Arm Guard in my Training ....Love and Respect. In Kali it’s a shield .. we use the lead from from cross to trap or hit the hand or glove which opens up the face use the same momentum to hit the face
I train with the coach who trained the Ghost and he tells me although I'm short I'm built like Joe Frazier and if I'm a pressure fighter like him my powers gonna make me " a wealthy man someday" he thinks I can go pro eventually and I know so. I actually experimented with the cross arm guard and I'll tell you keep the arms close to your chin and chest otherwise the uppercuts will have enough space to get through. Also I found out when you jab and cross you could switch which arm is on top to make the angle of the punch smoother
6:25 it scares me how much the body is open I really like this style but man I can't imagine someone feinting and getting off a shot like that especially if there aiming towards my liver
I actively use this guard and I was worried about this too but I’ve never really been hit to the liver good while in this guard. If you move well with it and stay aware of what’s going on it’s pretty useful
If you stay aware and watch your opponent that shouldn’t be a problem. A slight shift is all that’s needed to keep either side safe. It’s just seeing through feints that’s the problem. Muscle memory should help with that to. As In even if you might’ve been a bit slow on reading the other boxer those reflexes honed with hard work and lots of blood and sweat kick in! At the same time however an over reliance on this guard usually ends badly at the higher levels of the sweet science.
Nice the problem when doing this instinctively is instinctively you may also be turning your face away. Not saying that’s the case but I see this a lot in beginners
It was actually used by Foreman, during his fight against Holyfield if I'm not mistaken. Keep sparring and exploring possibilities, following the classic paved roads can be boring after some time.
The sole purpose of the cross arm guard is to break the knuckles( by baiting the power hand which is the cross). Or crowd your opponent. 52 block practitioner will use it too close the distance. Covert it into a strike to set up other combinations. Archie Moore use similar tactics in the ring, including George Foreman.
crossed arm guard is one of the best boxing guards in my opinion, but the user is also the most welcoming triangle choke casualties if your opponent is a mma expert
Imo the gaurd should be taught more . The defense it offers is amazing If done correctly. Also for MMA and self defense . Offensively and counter opportunity wize a little hard but if u can sneakly uze this gaurd it's vary effective .. I switch between this gaurd and your standard gaurds often . I don't thank u wanna use the same gaurd all the time . Same as a NFL team doesn't use the same defense and offenses .. u keep your opponent guessing .
He doing a good job the right forearm should be across the top of his forehead instead of down lower left-arm to be across from hip-to-hip to block body shots good jobs
Enclosed his left arm should be against his body when you're in close instead of near your head you can put it up to your head left forearm but remember to bring it down to block body shots good job
I know this is for boxing, but this seems like a really interesting guard for muay thai. Since elbows are legal you can throw some really nasty elbows from within the guard if you fight inside. Will have to test it out but seems like a hidden gem for muay thai.
Hi Coach!! What a Video, I Loved It!! Was It Magnificent?? You Bet!! Everyone Of Your Videos Are!! You Are The Best Coach!! Thank You For a Perfect Video as Always and Always!!!
This will be useful for me in certain scenarios like being cut off in a corner or my back to the end of the mat, and if I wanna use my lead arm to jab and hook to get some distance and damage him too, so I can move and assume my usual muay thai stance(with the tight high guard of course). But I dont see it being more useful than my current guard, which I must still get better at of course, because the high guard offers way better striking opportunities since both fists are already loaded up just by the guard itself compression your arms and body into a spring basically. Useful for attack and defense, while the cross arm appears to be useful for defense, and defensive attacks. SImilar to the philly shell in some ways. Interesting video. Can you do some videos on how to safely close distance on someone and then land a series of body hooks? can you do the same on how to close distance with someone and use the lead hook to the head? Thanks. A video with nate would be perfect. I wanna see how various people do it. Also if you wanna upload sparring footage(thoughwe dont do that at my own gym except between fellow members we'll share clips with each other of our sparring matches; but never publicly kinda an unspoken rule against that) I would greatly appreciate that! Using high guard against high guard I would REALLY like that. It would help me personally in Muay Thai quite abit; as you know boxing is a MAJOR aspect of Muay Thai, more useful than kicks and any other strike is on the whole. Though kicks prevent low level movement and crouching and so forth, and head movement too besides slips and QUICK bobs used infrequently so you dont get timed and kneed in the chin as your ducking into it.
Your left arm is supposed to be against your stomach. You can adjust it, depending on where the punches come from left arm waist high against your body.
Mordern users outside boxing nowadays are Yoel Romero, Daniel Cormier, Dustin porier kinda used the position. It’s also a reverse position in muay thai

Check out Lyte Burly as well. He literally mastered this.
I would to see lyte use 52 blocks sparring a legit boxer or put up videos showing 52 blocks effectiveness in boxing that would be great.
@@r.a.8407 go though his channel and you'll see 52 in action. Search Young Burly golden gloves for 52 in the ring
Hey Boss! Combining the Cross Arm Guard with more of the Leverage Defense would have been a great bit of skill lesson for folks. The smoother transition from the full prevention of the cross arm to long-combo-forward-movement.... I mean... you aren't going to use the Leverage Defense backing up unless you are crazy or out on your feet :)
I find it very effective to use the Leverage Defense to both transition safely back to Outboxing, and clear their guard after you deliver the Cross Arm Guard clash... and I LOVE that you made sure people learned to utilize the clash of guards.... one of the best benefits of Cross Arm Guard IMO.
Was practicing pressure fighting in this guard today and it was very effective against the jab and cross. However, I felt comfortable using my lead hand as the upper hand and the rear as the lower hand...would appreciate your critique on this. The only thing I felt vulnerable to was the left hook
The the reverse cross guard
JT !!! good god ! i was waiting for ever for a video like this !
Love it, i Just learned how to use the clinch but this is a good one to try and learn next when pressured. Good insight or tip for when to use this guard. Looking at archies highlights didn't gave me that insight. Great stuff!!
You shoud get Tim Witherspoon to come in and give some tips on cross arm guard I can help set that up
I like what he's doing I'm really impressed all you have to do is put your right forearm across your forehead that will eliminate all the other movement or block everything that coming straight at you not bad coach left-arm should be against your body not away from your body laying the left-arm right across your stomach near your hips lay across your hips like he's doing and block body shots good job
Two of my best youtubers in on one vid....great job brothers
I love this guard. It works really well with no gloves too.
something you can't do with boxing gloves but which helps with bracing for powershots, is putting your thumb under your armpit. The way it makes your hand rest on the shoulder creates a very solid structure. Useful against people who knock your guard around with big loopy punches, but limits your parrying abilities, since it locks your hand in place.
Trust me if you’re a southpaw or switch try the cross arm it’s perfect in Southpaw
Fantastic video. Thank you. Can you possibly make a follow up video with offense and counters from the cross guard?
This type of sheilding is great for bare knuckle boxing or self defense
I always was a fan. I would love a video on offensive techniques out of this guard
'Very, Instructive. Nice Video. Very Practical.Identified with everything you said.I have included the Cross Arm Guard in my Training ....Love and Respect. Thanks for Sharing.(".... not to solely rely on , but to mix it up, and play with it.... Work and adjust. Be able to switch...."). " BE LIKE WATER MY FRIEND " !!!❤
Thank you..thata was gold !
In Kali it’s a shield .. we use the lead from from cross to trap or hit the hand or glove which opens up the face use the same momentum to hit the face
Thanks, Ima f'em up with this!!!
I love it ❤🥊
Cross arm leaves open for body shot instead of 1,2 jab to the head right hand to the body
Came here from Creed 3
very good coverage on this guard, I used it for some time but i did feel abit open, I like how you explained it
This is the first time I ever hear about and see this guard, it's quite interesting. Thanks for sharing!
It's really dynamic once you master it (Foreman and Norton)
a really good, clear and informative explanation. Thank you
Thank you for what you do.
George foreman is a great example of the cross arm guard
I train with the coach who trained the Ghost and he tells me although I'm short I'm built like Joe Frazier and if I'm a pressure fighter like him my powers gonna make me " a wealthy man someday" he thinks I can go pro eventually and I know so. I actually experimented with the cross arm guard and I'll tell you keep the arms close to your chin and chest otherwise the uppercuts will have enough space to get through. Also I found out when you jab and cross you could switch which arm is on top to make the angle of the punch smoother
Thank you very helpful
You still boxing??
@@da.kidd.productions yup
@@zackdelarosa14 keep going man. I also box to, we'll make it one day!!
I love love love the cross guard and still use in sparring. When I use it I feel like Frazier and Foreman. :D
He shouted my Big brother and Mentor Sayf!
I see this first from sayf plus the offense
Fantastic good video. Its remember me about George forman.
At the same time however an over reliance on this guard usually ends badly at the higher levels of the sweet science.
the liver is on the righthand side.. well if u r a lefty that could be a problem tho.
That works great for Kickboxing
I use the cross guard when I want to rush in on my opponent. And I sometimes transition from the Philly Shell to the Cross Guard.
Huh, just yesterday during sparring I instinctively started doing this. Turnes out its an actual thing. Really interesting to know.
Nice the problem when doing this instinctively is instinctively you may also be turning your face away. Not saying that’s the case but I see this a lot in beginners
i did the same thing 3 days ago and it is great at couter punching
It was actually used by Foreman, during his fight against Holyfield if I'm not mistaken.
Keep sparring and exploring possibilities, following the classic paved roads can be boring after some time.
The sole purpose of the cross arm guard is to break the knuckles( by baiting the power hand which is the cross). Or crowd your opponent. 52 block practitioner will use it too close the distance. Covert it into a strike to set up other combinations. Archie Moore use similar tactics in the ring, including George Foreman.
Thank you! Can’t wait to try this
crossed arm guard is one of the best boxing guards in my opinion, but the user is also the most welcoming triangle choke casualties if your opponent is a mma expert
Been a while since I’ve stopped by, but I’m back! I appreciate the uploads brother 👏 🔥
Thank you for sharing another world-class video!
Like it, as it was used by my favorite Joe Frazier
The inside work with this guard seems like you could really shut someones inside game down
I'll use that✌
He doing a good job the right forearm should be across the top of his forehead instead of down lower left-arm to be across from hip-to-hip to block body shots good jobs
Enclosed his left arm should be against his body when you're in close instead of near your head you can put it up to your head left forearm but remember to bring it down to block body shots good job
As a shorter fighter this is my favorite blocking style.
I know this is for boxing, but this seems like a really interesting guard for muay thai. Since elbows are legal you can throw some really nasty elbows from within the guard if you fight inside. Will have to test it out but seems like a hidden gem for muay thai.
So good!
Great video coach, thank you!
Excellent video JT
Ive been looking for a solution for overwhelming attacks and I think this is it!! ANOTHER great video!!
Great video style breakdown.
Nice one. Thanks :)
Hina i will knock you out in a mma cage fight!
In the cross arm guard the rear hand is active and manipulates the guard like George Forman
Your left arm is supposed to be against your stomach. You can adjust it, depending on where the punches come from left arm waist high against your body.
excellent execution, very detailed explanation... greetings from Poland!
George did it in fight vs Holyfield
Mordern users outside boxing nowadays are Yoel Romero, Daniel Cormier, Dustin porier kinda used the position. It’s also a reverse position in muay thai
