Now he brings his half-Maori, half-Jewish, fully skewed sensibilities to his most daring film yet. A dazzling takedown of fascist thinking and the violence it fuels, Jojo Rabbit begins in biting satire but delivers surprising emotional impact.
Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) is a precocious kid in World War II Germany with an egregious blind spot. Socially awkward, but a proud member of the Hitler Youth, Jojo passes much of his time with his imaginary friend Adolf (Waititi), a cuddly, energetic, pep-talking version of the Führer. Having completely bought into Nazi hate, Jojo is incensed when he discovers that his mother (Scarlett Johansson, also at the Festival in Marriage Story) has been working for the resistance, helping to keep safe the Jewish people he's been taught to hate. With Germany on the brink of collapse, he is faced with the choice of clinging to his hateful beliefs or embracing his humanity.
Jojo Rabbit walks a precarious high wire, savaging the antisemitism of the Nazi era while identifying pointed parallels to today's fascist groupthink. Waititi, who has long had a gift for infusing even his wildest comedies with real heart, guides this film from taboo-breaking scenes reminiscent of Monty Python or Mel Brooks into far more emotional territory, as Jojo confronts the damage he's done. A singular and essential response to both history and our current moment, Jojo Rabbit simply must be seen.
Watch Scarlett and her constant watching of Roman Griffin Davis (her son in the movie). She is smiling and joyful and protective of him like a real mother. You can really see her connection with him. It's really beautiful and heartwarming. Much respect for Scarlett.
So true. And i saw lately 2 movies with her: marriage stories and jojo rabbit and find myself wondering if her motherhood gave her that super deep and authentic presence? Really great performances.

taika waititi is a very likeable human being.
Scarlett's character reminded me of the dad in Life is Beautiful and I think most parents does this where they still want their kid to remain a kid in harsh time. While there are some parents that want their kid to grow up fast so they could protect themselves.

aaaww! I haven't watch it yet and don't know much about it - but if you compared it to Life Is Beautiful" than it is a beautiful movie!
True, they share the wish for their kids to not grow too fast. But contrary to the father in "Life is beautiful", Rosie does not try to hide the violence of the world... When they go past the executed rebels, she does not make a joke or make Jojo close his eyes (like the Father in "Life is beautiful" would have probably done). She forces him to watch. Quite a fundamental difference.

Ok, so, this audience *just* watched the film and now gets to see and listen to the director and cast?! How forking amazing must the energy in the room have been? Wow. I saw it again yesterday when I took a somewhat reluctant friend who was completely won over and now also wants to see it again; as I did. I just wanted to share such an experience, and it was an experience, with someone I cared about. The main thing I tried to convey was that it's a story about a boy. And that was reiterated to me when my friend, who had been influenced by negative twitterverse feedback. When it was over, he said " it's a story about a boy". It's such a tremendous film.
That's the best thing about going to film festivals! I'm sure there's one in your city

I don't think so. Taika Waititi's "Two Cars, One Night" was nominated for "Best Live Action Short Film". Maybe, the Academy nominate him for "Best Adapted Screenplay". For me, the great candidates are: "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood"; "The Lighthouse" ("Best Actor in a Leading Role" (Dafoe) and "Best Original Screenplay" (Robert Eggers, Max Eggers) nominations); "Joker" (especially for "Best Actor in a Leading Role", for Joaquin Phoenix); and "The Irishman". Maybe, the Oscar for Best Directing goes to Tarantino, and the Oscar for Best Picture goes to "Joker". Or the two awards go to "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood" (among others awards). The Academy is unpredictable.

The TV show is very good, I got introduced to his films via Hunt For The Wilderpeople and kept an eye on his films from there, Thor Ragnarok is now my favourite movie
