"I'm noticing it!" Taika Waititi on Jojo Rabbit and... Ali's T-shirt!?

- Taika Waititi is the writer/director/actor behind such beloved films as Hunt For The Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows and Thor Ragnarok. Now he's back with a new film, Jojo Rabbit, and it's pretty out there even by Taika's standards, telling as it does the story of a young boy in 1940s Germany who's been so caught up by Nazi propaganda that he's obsessed with all things Hitler. Like, seriously. This is his-imaginary-friend-is-Hitler levels. Talking here to BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra's film critic Ali Plumb about how he made the movie, Taika touches on casting, scriptwriting and how uncomfortable it is to play You Know Who. Plus... what is going on with Ali's T-shirt?

In my opinion there is NO ONE who does the "hilarious movie and then suddenly you're crying cause it got emotional" better than this guy!
Yup, he's the expert at it
I still can’t believe the saddest scene in Hunt for the Wilderpeople is followed by possibly the funniest.
@@oneshot2139 that's what I'm saying, Taika is brilliant
I have to disagree. I think what Taika does which is even more impressive, is transition from sad or poignant moments back to humour, without undermining the emotion at all
Cried like a baby when Stu died in what we do in the shadows
Said this once and I'll say it again, Taika Waititi's contribution to Thor's character in Thor Ragnarok was a turning point on both Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi's himself's career
Vitor Oliveira Never say that again
Waititi has devolved Thor's character into a cringey mess
@@buffnipz not really. He made a huge improvement to the character. Which was then really done well in infinity war and the endgame kinda of just ruined that
broken larva your life is a huge mess!
campbell holt I dont like that Thor has been turned into a clever trickster. Thats Loki’s character. At the same time I really enjoyed the movie
It seems like Ali's made his brand on paying attention to actors and genuinely trying to understand their sense of humor, to put them at ease. It's a delightfully honorable and kind technique.
The two kids are like little Simon pegg and nick frost
Innit
Shaun of the Dead prequel
It's the joy in delivery right?
not even
@@mooseontheloose-2531 you good?
This is the least flamboyant I've ever seen Taika dressed for an interview.
Simon Vin weird how this is like the most energetic interviewer
I think it’s because taika knows he doesn’t have to carry the interview this time
Grespino 1 lol makes sense I guess
Excuse me bave you seen that moustache
Idk that's a hard stache he's got there.
Taika looks tired and even then, the interviewer manages to get his interest and cheer him up as the interview goes on.
It's so interesting how Ali mirrors the "sleepy calm voiced" manner of talking Taika has, so the interview sounds pleasantly balanced.
Either that or he is smoking some top grade dried crap...
One thing I love about Taika is his hair... And his sense of humour, too. But that hair. Wow.
Yeah... that hair 😍
Also that moustache
This interviewer was really good. He did his research and seemed to lift Taika's spirits. I get a sneaking suspicion that lots of press interviews in a day can be grueling for actors and movie makers.
It's interesting to me cause most of the time Taika seems like a big child (on a good way) and Ali seems to get more joy out of the people he interviews. But for some reason it's like Ali's calm insightful questions made Taika happy to show his more serious side
I think it's because he makes it a conversation too instead of just an interview. Makes it more fun for the both of them and less awkward.
I used to work at radio London as security a lot of celebs would drink and smoke alot and not many of them liked doing press runs at all.
"And you're giving him notes dressed as Hitler and you go-"
"Can't you follow a simple order?"
This is why I watch every single interview that Taika does.
“I say a friend of mine. We know each other online.” Story of my life 😂
“Did that jump about ten times” now his calves cut diamonds
Ali: So when people stop you in the street, what do they typically say?
Taika: ….. urm STOP...
Is it some kind of reference to a movie or its just a joke from Taika?
@@CeilloNoll it's just an on the spot joke lol
It's a pretty effective way to stop people, you can't deny it
When the introvert gets tired of being an extrovert, but still has to do talking 😂
Taika is one of the few directors working today that I will watch any movie / show he directs sight unseen. Always have so much fun with his movies.
Same. Love him.
Taika directed Thor Ragnarok and the season finale of the Mandalorian. He also played Korg and IG 11. Taika is my spirit guide.
ok IMDb
RIP IG 11 💕
IG11 was barely a character
And recently in an episode of Rick and Morty.
The Phoenix Foundation 40 Years - You're welcome.
These two men bring me joy
The person interviewing watiti is awesome at his job!
"We’re not just pointing the finger at you, Deacon. You’re a cool guy but you’re not pulling your weight in the flat."
well, I'm glad to hear that I'm cool
❤️
@@odinvik7821 no, that's not the point though
you're missing the point
Can I have a “Piss Off Ghost” t-shirt please??? Pretty please?
I liked his directed Mando Episode the most!
poohbearwhitty thank you! Happy New Year!
Taika waititi is great with timing. He knows when to insert a joke and when to be serious.
Velathore kiwi humour mate ❤️
I would pay to see Richard ayoade interview Taika other vice versa, that would be pure gold
Or them making a film together
The interviewer was such a delight.
Usually they are do not let the quest speak (being more interested in doing the talking) or ask boring questions (haven't they done any research?).
This was a rare treat indeed.
Taika's film-making and personality are such breaths of fresh air in the film industry.
6:09 exemplifies Dry kiwi humour and the Interviewer fires back an equally dry humour reply :D
I can honestly say this is the only celebrity interview show I will watch with any regularity. Ali is great at his job and brings out the best in those he is interviewing.
Taika is serving full 'Kiwi dad realness' in this one
I read the title as "I'm noticing Taika Waititi on Jojo Rabbit and... Ali's T-shirt!?"
He really made Ali squirm there at the end xD
Taika Waititi is quickly becoming one of my favorite humans.
Mandalorian's season finale is a prime Taika. Well crafted, humour, mind blowing actions and most an importantly that satisfying ending with top notch cliff hanger.
you realise he only directed that episode
@@frederique3006 yeah, I know. But if have seen Taika's previous works, you would've noticed Taika's touches and uniqueness. And most importantly, he worked with and in collaboration with John Favreau & Dave Filoni. They are known to be open minded as creator and giving space to their directors.
@@SaidurRahmanSajal i've seen his other projects yes, i was only alluding to the 'top notch cliff hanger' and 'satisfying ending', he did a great job directing but he did not write those things
This movie was simply wonderful. I'm so glad I went to see it and I urge everyone to see it before it leaves theatres!!
Jar Jar Binks I’m trying !!!! 😩
‘can’t you follow a simple order?’ Priceless.
"Oh hang on a minute.... look what I've noticed " 🤣
Love him and loved the film, watched it about 10 times already! Loved everything Taika has done so far 😍
Gemma Hardy get a life
@@Jmagee2113 ok boomer
u watched it 10 times
This interview was so on point. Loved it. The interviewer is great!
"😐 Can you follow a simple order?" 😂
Ali: Why can't we see a Korg & Meik spinoff?
Taika: because I'm busy, why don't you make it?...
Ali: ....(short pause of silence)
Edit: Typical Kiwi response towards lazy people🤣🤣🤣
Jamac007 hahah Ikr
THAT QUESTION AT 3:30!! Yessss!! Brilliant! Read my mind! Taika's sigh says it all
Every day I find more interesting Ali's interview, and I enjoy also watching them because, improve my English level, so I must keep going. About Jojo Rabbit, if I could highlight something from the movie, it would be Scarlett Johansson. She was the reason why I wanted to watch the movie, so good job Taika, he has good eye to cast to the actors.
Been meaning to comment for an age, I think you are the best film interviewer at present( I still bow to the greatness of Bazza Norman). But between your enthusiasm and pure cinematic knowledge, you are joy to watch in action. Nice one.
It was a great movie! We laughed and were touched. Acting was A+ too. It was kind and smart. And it is so relevant today... We kinda have nazi problem in my country. :/ Sending love from Slovakia.
Ali is always so sweet and kind I love him.
You made me enjoy listening to interviews .Thanks Ali!
Ali Plumb is the best film interviewer in the business!
“Oh my god I want that” hit harder than the rest
The interviewer taking future credit for making korg and meik happen even though it was inevitable.
The mandalorian season finale was so good. I hope they have Taika direct future episodes in season 2.
this is by far the best interviewer on the internet, no interview you do is bad and you always treat the guests so well
Watched Jojo earlier today, and loved it. It has genuinely funny comedic elements, and some fully serious moments that are suspenseful or which touch on the horror of Nazi Germany. And Taika has delivered a film that balances on the tightrope between those elements. The acting delivered by each of the main cast is also excellent. Bravo Taika.
MAD crush on Taika's hair, sense of humour and brains ♡
A wonderful movie. Laugh out loud and be abruptly stopped by your tears. Well done Taika ❤️
Such an underrated movie
*Nominated for 6 Oscars*
"SuCh An UnDeRrAtEd MoViE"
I get you. I watched it and asked at work who's seen it and and people were just uncomfortable about the subject of it.
I love their conversation and the sense of humor
How is a thumbnail of this interview not the main part of the listing for that shirt on her site? lol So good.
He’s definitely getting him one of those shirts next time they interview him
Ali is SUCH a great interviewer
Got to love that glorious dancing scene!
from the german side of things- even with scarlet and like, rebel wilson in there, this movie just worked fabulously and was still weirdly accurate...also "give him a bazooka and go" is a mood
I love this movie, and Ali does a great job getting a conversation going as usual. 👏
Can’t wait!😆
OMG! I want that “Piss Off Ghost” shirt too. 😍 What a hoot! 😂
Why does this guy have such good chemistry with everyone he interviews
Maybe he doesn't take himself seriously and just has fun with it.
He likes his job and is a professional.
I could listen to him talk all day 😍
Two of the most talented and entertaining persona.
Somehow we need Archie Yates and Nick Frost in a movie together.
Dark comedy is my thing
"Dark humour is like food. Not everybody gets it." - Joseph Stalin
(not my joke, I stole it from someone else)
@@RictusHolloweye nice try ik u did cuz everyone did also it's funny with I offend people
Taika Waititi is a global treasure. So much more of him please.
i absolutely love this interviewer!!
Taika looks like Albert Einstein here.
Spot on.
I'm so happy that Taika is finally being recognised by the masses as the great director he is!! Just phenomenal!
Great interviewers
1. Ali
2. Ali
3. Ali...
On a serious note:
1. Ali
2. JackSepticEye
3. Sean Evans
would add hazel Hayes tipsy talk interviews to this list
Best interviewer ever👏
Taika is like, all the best parts of De Sica, Rosselini & Mel Brooks... all rolled into one good ole blunt an smoked.. MAD Love for the dude, no doubt - sick as
"oh hang on a minute! ... look what i noticed." I LOVE HIM
Honestly it's crazy that only recently has Taika been noticed. His work from what we do in the shadows, Thor: Ragnarok , JoJo rabbit, and Mandalorian, has been spectacular.
xISMOKEU13x as it was in: Boy, Eagle Versus Shark, and, those eps of flight of the concords that he directed👍🏻🙂
Great reviews from almost everyone here BUT the Golden Globes was not kind, indeed not kind, Oscar! Ya better give Taika that trophy aye!?😮
Great movie! Highly recommend
deadandgone70 No
Mark Wilson no
@@Wilsy1808 you fool
I must find this movie. Had NO idea it was made.
I love Ali and I love Taika! Liked in the 1st 3 seconds
Taika Waititi is God's gift to the universe. 😎
Where can I get that “piss of ghost” shirt 😂
That's cool, I thought the "Fu** off Hitler" will become a thing as well.
How could the t-shirt maker not send one for Taika just in case? If I was them, I would be hollering XD
I'm so happy the academy recognized him for this beautiful work.
Can I just give props to the interviewer here? Wow!
Where's the link to your "friends" website! I want to buy that shirt!!
Gorgeous movie
since love and thunder is coming out soon, i truly hope ali will remember to bring one of those shirts to give to taika when he interviews him :D
What I love about Taika is that he probably took this role because he didnt want to force anyone else to do so, and knew exactly what he was going for as "imaginary Hitler". What a fucking legend
Um the studio didnt want to do auditions for Hitler so asked him to do it instead.
Also there’s the wonderful irony of having a Jewish man of color playing a parody version of Evil Charlie Chaplin
To anyone who hasn't go watch Boy and you'll see where it all came from. Tika has been nailing this style for over a decade already.
“cant you take a simple order”
Someone find the shirt creator! Cus i’d love to have one
Taika is just spectacular
I NEED that t-shirt 😦😍🙌 it's too damned special
It can be hard to find interviews where Taika sticks to giving serious answers about his art without steering of the track and being silly. This was a good watch :)
HE NOTICED IT!
"Hmmmph that sounds like a false promise..."
Ali, where is the link to buy the shirt?!?!
This interviewer is very nice!
People have already commented this but CHRIST this interviewer is doing his job dam well good. I HATE the way Western interviewers (I'm American) "act" professional by acting like a fucking robot. This was refreshing.
Some great noticing going on in this clip
