I recommend shutting off the water at main valve; under-sink valves are NOTORIOUS for failing since they're used so seldom. Also, I replaced all of my under-sink, toilet, & washing machine valves w/ball valves since they're much more reliable and we generally use all of them for binary functions; on or off. Great video!!!!!
Yeah I made it a habit to cycle each valve at least twice a year. But it’s definitely worthwhile to replace them with ball valves. Thanks for the suggestion brother and also for the feedback.
Thanks for the feedback, I try to show as much as possible to make it easier for first timers. Let me know if you ever have any questions, I’m always around for advice.
We did it !! And without the help of a plumber who wanted to charge us $400. Took us about 20 minutes, mostly because of calcium buildup around the threads. But it's done and it works beautifully. Thank you for the excellent video.
This comment made me smile, this is the reason I make these videos. Helping people save money. I’m so happy you accomplished the easy swap and saved your hard earned money. Take care Mrs Carol.
For the Ashton model like this one, call Delta, lifetime warranty. Stopper sink so you don't lose parts. The little orange slider on the cartridge adjusts hot water flow/anti scald. I want mine wide open for all the hot water I can get via handle adjustment. I bet many blame the water heater, when that valve is the culprit. BTW - that's why Delta went from the ball to the cartridge!
Thanks so much for this--i also was able to fix my sink that has been driving me crazy for months. QUick tip-if you have a delta faucet you may be able to call them and have them send you a free cartridge as they have a life time warranty.
Thanks a bunch, huge help! I know these are fairly simple but I wasn’t sure about what part was needed. This is easy enough that I can do this as long as I have the part but fortunately I have a guy here that’s good at this kind of thing and I’m just his researcher.😉
I priced one of these cartridges and was glad I did not have to buy a new one because the cartridge would have cost 50% of the cost of the Delta faucet I have had for 5 years now. All I had to do was to grease the ball and the seats it rides in with special Plumber's Grease which is available at Lowe's and Home Depot and most hardware stores. Just do not disassemble the cartridge anymore than necessary in order to get to the ball ( which attaches to the handle). More than likely the actual valve is in great shape still. The ball and seats just need to be wiped clean with a paper towel and the special grease applied. I just bought Silicone Plumber's Grease today and it is supposed to be waterproof, which, I hope, means longer lasting.
Much appreciated, at 8:02 I show you where to put grease. If you do this and it still doesn’t work contact Delta and have them send you out a replacement for free. Let me know how you make out. Good luck Laura.
@@MrV2u I was able to install the new valve ! Yippee. Due to calcium build-up. loosening the threads took quite a long time. Now it works beautifully. THANK YOU.
@@marcmilnes955 that's awesome brother. I've had that calcium build up issue as well. The best thing I found to work is just plain vinegar. Wrap a wrap around it and soak it with vinegar. I never thought of saving the receipt. I know that their life time warranty is awesome. I didn’t want to wait for the part so I just bought it brother. But next time I will definitely give them a call first. Thanks for the tip my friend.
Thanks for the great video! However…I’m having a hard time replacing the set screw. Goes in fine and I can see the stem but it doesn’t seem to touch the stem. Similar faucet as in your video.
Do you have any calcium or grit that doesn’t allow the set screw to sit flush? Soak it in vinegar along with the handle for a it and try again. Let me know if that works.
Thanks for this video!! It appears to provide all I need as a rank amateur to fix my leaking faucet. I'm about to tackle the cartridge repairs. In preparation I went searching for "Silicone grease". Harbor Freight? Don't have it. A local auto parts store seemed baffled by my request. However an employee, who claimed to be a "handyman", suggested "Synthetic Caliper Grease" and said that would "absolutely" do the job. When I read the package I see no mention of silicone as an ingredient. Also this comment on the package "waterproof formulation prevents against corrosion". QUESTION: Will the Caliper Grease suffice?
I wouldn’t use caliper grease on something that is going to be in contact with your water. Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and go to the section where they have the sink repair parts and it will be there. If not ask for it. Let me know how you make out or if you have any other questions brother. Good luck
Before you go hit the area around the ring with some vinegar or wrap a rag around it and soak it in vinegar to make the job easier to take off the beauty ring.
@@MrV2u I have not yet taken anything apart. My experience as a handyman (generally poor) over MANY years has taught me to go slow. So I'm doing my research, gathering tools and supplies to deal with the "what if's" BEFORE I jump in. So I'll have it all when I start the job. I HATE having to make several trips to HD during the job. And in the case of my kitchen faucet, once I start the job I need to know I can finish it. I'm hoping that since I have very good City water that I'll have no issue with too much corrosion. If I do, I have what I need to deal with that or I can just use the brand new cartridge that Delta has sent me and toss the old one. Make sense to you Mr Vu?
I would add that once you clean the inner threads at the bottom of the brass coloured locking tube that holds the cartridge in place with a stiff toothbrush and vinegar, then lube those inner threads with food grade silicone grease if you have, or just as good is a good coating with olive oil. And when you tighten that locking tube with a wrench, very little torque is needed. Just lightly snug is all you need.
I recommend soaking the parts of the disassembled cartridge in vinegar with a pinch of baking soda added. This will remove deposits on the parts of the cartridge that may have deposits causing it to grind as well. Rinse all parts thoroughly and re-grease and assemble.
Good information brother. I know you could always call delta for free replacements. I’ve never tried bribing it back to Home Depot directly. Thanks for the tip.

You can try and get some heat on it with a small torch. If not then your going to need to drill it out with a small bit and then try to get an extractor on it. I would definitely reach out to Delta and explain the situation and they may just send you a new unit under warranty. They have a great lifetime warranty. Let me know how you make out. I know it’s not the greatest news.
If your new or renovated house came with Delta faucets, they will only warranty them to the original owner. We bought our house 1 year old from the original owners, and Delta won't talk to us.
I have Delta with a pull out nozzle. The hose came loose from the faucet sput. Is there a trick to get the hose back up thru the hub assembly to reconnect?
@MrV2u can I send you pic of what I have? I spent an hour with Delta and the end result is that they will send me a new faucet. It will take 6 to 8 days that leaves us without a kitchen sink. When you say pry up do you mean the hub assembly? I do not have a gooseneck. I asked them about te hub assembly because it seems to me I could fish it thru but they said it is not supposed to be removed.
Thanks for the great video. I have the same faucet and need to do the same job next week. I appreciate you doing this. Delta told me it is important to flush the lines underneath the sink before putting in the new cartridge. I have a bad back so getting under the sink is hard. Do you feel this is a necessary step to flush from underneath the sink or is the method you used sufficient?
Another commenter suggested the same thing recently. I never done it myself and haven’t had issue with it. I too have a bad back, 3 operations and another coming soon. I can see it helping especially if you have hard water, but save the back and let it ride brother.
@@MrV2u thanks again. Got the job done today in 15 min because of this video. Leaking / squeaking faucet cured!! Delta sent the replacement cartridge under warranty. It arrived in the mail within 4 days.
My cap is real jammed I think because of corrosion and lime buildup. I couldn’t get it out even after 30 mins it sitting in liquid wrench. Do you think I should let it sit for 2 hours or so? Have not tried vinegar yet. Will try that after this.
If the liquid wrench didn’t get it loose soak it in vinegar. Try to rock it back and forth to get it loose (tighten and loosen) to get it to budge. If all else fails try PB Blaster. That stuff is amazing. Let me know how you make out brother.
@@MrV2u hi again, I got it out finally! Had soaked in vinegar like you said. Even then, I was unable to rotate it using channel locks; chrome finish to hell, got all deep marks in it. Finally, I hit it couple of times using the plier on both sides and tried from the top, holding one side of “teeth” with pliers and it finally rotated a little. Inside the cartridge, if you open it, there is a small white plastic sheet which was torn in my case, probably the cause of the leak. Anyways, thanks for the vinegar tip! Helped a lot!

I’m pretty sure it’s in the head of the faucet. I doubt it’s replaceable. Call delta and have them send you a new unit. They have a lifetime warranty so no questions asked.
Good video, but the one thing I would add is that instead of getting the part from home depot, just call Delta. Their items are guaranteed for life. I called them, told them the faucet was leaking, they asked for the model number, etc... and sent me a new on the in the mail for free. Arrived 3 days after I called. They also sent me a new head because it wasn't functioning as well as it should either. No receipts needed... just asked when I purchased it and the model number. I didn't know my model number as I got my faucet in 2012, so Just just google and found it on the internet, wrote it down, then called them. Viola! Thanks for the tutorial though!
Your correct my friend, but I was in a rush to get it done. Their lifetime warranty is outstanding. No questions asked what so ever. Glad I could help you my brother. Thanks for the feedback as well.
I put the new cartfride in because the old one would not shut off. Now it will shut off but only if I close the hand from the cold side. If I shut it off from the hot side I get a trickle that wont stop. I have to turn the faucet back on then turn it off from the cold side before it will stop. Any ideas?
Seems to me that you got a bad cartridge brother. I’ve seen it happen more than once. If you call delta they will send you a new one for free under their lifetime guarantee.
Delta warranties their products for life. They will send replacement parts to you at no charge. If you don’t know the model number of your faucets all you have do is send customer service a photo on you mobile device they will be able to identify it. I’ve done it numerous times. This process also works for Moen faucets.
I got everything off down to the cartridge. But when I put the cartridge back in after cleaning it’s hard to get it back in properly to align right. Does it snap in with the tabs? My problem is that the cold water pressure is fine but hot pressure is weak. It’s a single handle faucet.
The tabs allow you to align it up correctly. If it’s not sitting in the tabs you will have issues. Take it back out and check that the tabs are not broken and aligned right. Did you have that issue before you replaced it? Let me know if that helps. I’ve also seen new cartridges come new defective.
@@MrV2u thanks for replying! I didn’t replace the cartridge but took it out and tried to clean it then put it back in. But from what you are saying. I didn’t align it right. I will fix that and if it still didn’t fix the hot water pressure I will replace the cartridge which the manufacturer is sending me for free.
@@MrV2u well I replaced the cartridge and the hot water pressure is still not great so I don’t think it fixed it. Could it be an issue with the supply line? I think I’m throwing the towel in and calling a plumber. I also opened up the old cartridge and didn’t see any blockage or issue.
If your hot water pressure is slow in just one fixture, you'll want to check to make sure the hot water valve is turned all the way on. If it is, the problem is most likely a blockage of some sort in the hot water supply lines. But if you’ve found that your hot water pressure is weak in all of your home’s appliances, it’s most likely due to sediment build-up in your water heater.
Have you ever had a handle that would not come off the cartridge even after completely removing the set screw? Im having that issue and i need to get to the cartridge as its leaking a bit.
Use the small straw that comes with the pb blaster or wd40 and spray some under the handle. Spray some into the set screw hole too. There is room, gently rock the handle back and forth. You’ll be able to work it out.
Awesome video...thanks so much for the instruction...Hey, question for you...after replacing cartridge, getting a single drip every minute or so from the faucet. I snugged it up pretty tight. Would it be too tight or should I give it another snug?
It shouldn’t be Superman strength tight. Just snug it up some and let me know if that helps brother. It wouldn’t hurt to take it back out and check the orange seals and make sure they didn’t get pinched or crushed in anyway.
Hey there, think I figured out the problem. No matter how much torque (not superman) or less, it still leaked, so I put original back in & no leaks, so looks like the new one Delta sent out is defective. Will contact them & see if they can send out another one. Just wanted to let you know what happened. Thanks again for your channel & continued advice.
@@andyw197 I've had this problem before. I've actually had to take the new gasket off a new one and put it on the old one. 3 weeks ago I replaced mine again and it started leaking. the odd part is I thought ok maybe its not tight enough so I tightened it more and it started leaking more as if the gasket warped due to overtightening but I originally tightened it by hand. Delta is sending me a free one so we'll see with this one. I wonder if these are just problematic or cheap manufacturing over the past few years.
Quick tip to everyone with this Delta cartridge: A "certain home improvement store" that is based in blue color out of Mooresville NC sells a 3rd party brand for $22.98 as I had to buy one last night & it fits and works perfect on my Delta single handle faucet. Does anyone know if adding the grease like the person did in this video will stop the leaking (slow dripping) from the faucet head? I had water dripping down the lines under the sink as well, so I just bought a new cartridge to see if it would work and I got very lucky that it stopped the leak. I can't see how that would work, but I'd like to save $24 like the next person.
Better tip is call delta and get the part for free. They have lifetime parts warranty brother. The grease does absolutely nothing for leaks. It’s to protect the surface of the faucet and keep things more or less moving freely.

@@gerrymcconnell6289 Oh, you’re absolutely right, my friend! That’s the only reason I decided to buy mine from Home Depot instead of waiting for the replacement from Delta.
Any tips on how to remove the buildup around the mechanism of the cartridge? Basically build up on the threads of the screwing mechanism. Ours is full of deposits.
Take a rag and soak it in vinegar and let it sit for 1/2 hour and repeat the process over and over till the calcium dissolves. It’s going to take a lot of patience and soak the rag very good. Let me know if that helps Adrian.
The orange switch allows you to choose between "Cold & Hot" or "Cold & Warm". Some people don't want to have very hot water, so this switch limits the movement of the handle, not allowing it to move all the way into the Hot position. Hope this helps.
Pb blaster is better than wd40. Soak a rag with vinegar and wrap it around the nut as best as possible and give it time to eat the calcium build up. Then hit it again with wd or pb blaster and tighten it a bit to break it loose. Then back it off. Let me know if that helps Frank.
Same issue for me. The nut seems to be frozen and nothing works. The wrench actually stripped the grooves on the outside of the nut. Guess, might just have to replace entire faucet.
@raghavann616 before you go that route call Delta and they will send you parts free of charge. If you didn’t get the nut off you may want to try some heat on it. Propane torch if you have. Try to tighten it up a bit then back it off. This may break the calcium build up. Pb blaster and vinegar the entire area and let it sit a couple hours. Let me know how you make out.
set screw won't come off. soaked in vinegar for days, penetrating fluid, ATF, nothing works. torqued the allen wrench, now it's stripped. how to fix now?

Glad to have helped brother. I try my best to do so. Thanks for the feedback.

Your very welcome my friend. Thanks for the feedback.
Great info brother. You could always call delta and have them send you a new one free of charge under their lifetime warranty.

Glad to help brother. Thanks for the feedback.

Pry up on the entire gooseneck it will pop off then you can snake it all through.

Thanks for the great video. I have the same faucet and need to do the same job next week. I appreciate you doing this. Delta told me it is important to flush the lines underneath the sink before putting in the new cartridge. I have a bad back so getting under the sink is hard. Finally, I hit it couple of times using the plier on both sides and tried from the top, holding one side of “teeth” with pliers and it finally rotated a little.

My pleasure Laura. Hope it worked out well for you.
Let me know how you make out. You should be good to go though with the new one.
Are there seats and springs on these? Or are they inside the cartridge?
I believe they are all internal brother.
@@MrV2u I will do that when I return home & let you know. Thanks for the support & tips!

@@MrV2u That did help. Thank you.
@@adriant240 that’s awesome brother. Glad it worked for you. Thanks for the update.
Why you not mention what the little orange switch is for???
The orange switch allows you to choose between "Cold & Hot" or "Cold & Warm". Some people don't want to have very hot water, so this switch limits the movement of the handle, not allowing it to move all the way into the Hot position. Hope this helps.
How do you loosen the nut. It seems to be frozen or locked on ? We tried two wrenches, WD 40 etc nothing moves.
