    1. Get rid of the engine cover
    2. Install induction kit
    3. Change ignition coils
    4. HPFP need to be changed sooner or later coz faulty high pressure sensor sits on it
    5. Cam follower of course
    6. Headlights fades, need to be polished
    7. Engine oil and filter change every 5k miles
That's all from my point of view

My first car was a 2005 VW Golf Mk5, dealt with no 3 (engine cover), no 4 (ignition coil), no 5 (timing belt), no 8 (shocks), no 9 (snapped spring), no 13 (boot release), no 14 (general interior wear), reverse light wiring and the infamous wheel arch rust. Loved it surprisingly as it allowed me to learn a lot about self servicing and maintenance, would own one again for sure!

The hpfp doesn’t fail the cam follower does. The hpfp only fails if you don’t change the follower. The follower you can buy for $25 and just change it every 20k miles and you’re good

Had mine for 11 years. Timing belt failed and bent all 16 valves. Right around 70k miles on that belt. Make sure to replace them on time. Even after that I still love my pocket rocket. New cylinder head and new valves feels like a brand new car. Candy white 4-door with 178k miles and counting. Cheers.

Here's what's needed to be replaced to my mk5 GTI by the time I got to 175k miles:
    1. Alternator went out
    2. Headlight wiring harness
    3. Thermostat and coolant temp sensor went out
    4. Ignition coils
    5. Shifter bushings
    6. Clutch master cylinder
I think that's it but all in all these things happened towards the 175k mark so I'm impressed and figured by 175k things would start to break.

I was lucky enough to have one from new(demonstrator as there was a 5 month waiting time thanks to top gear) back in 2005...did 70k miles in it in 3 years then sold it..it never let me down and never missed a beat...kept it regularly serviced by vw .
100% reliable...I am seriously thinking about getting another as a second car these days but will go for the edition 30 dsg as a bargain weekender.

    • @user-kc1tf7zm3b
      @user-kc1tf7zm3b Год назад

In Australia at least, a demonstrator car is not considered a new car, as the car dealer was the first legal owner of the car. This affects car loan costs and residual values when it is time to sell. Demonstrators are thrashed by prospective car buyers and car dealership staffers alike, so demonstrators are best avoided.

Ok, I have a gray 2006 mk5 GTI I bought new that is like the one in this video, except it is left hand drive. I have never heard about the high pressure fuel pump needing to be changed, just the internal cam follower to protect it. You can't get rid of the engine cover without installing a loud cold air intake. VW mistakenly placed the air filter inside the engine cover. Luckily they quit doing that. My VW dealership broke my engine cover on my first free service and didn't tell me about it, causing an air leak. A few years later when I discovered it I replaced the cover and it made the car smoother. My blow off value went bad causing the car to have poor acceleration. The newer version of that part used plastic instead of rubber and it has lasted around 9 years while the original only lasted about 4. The sunroof broke and the rear window washer hose broke where it flexes between the car and the hatch. Someone drove across the highway in front of me while I was doing 65. I slammed on the brakes and thought the car was going down so I started honking wildly. The GTI screeched to a stunning halt stopping an inch from the car which had parked itself crosswise in the left lane. But I honked so hard I broke the clockspring in the steering wheel requiring replacement. Worst of all is the heat of the South causes the interior fabric of all VWs to delaminate. VW didn't use glue that can take the heat and when the fabric separates it lets loose underlying nasty orange glue matter. I went to a junkyard and stripped the interior of a wrecked GTI for a low cost so now my GTI is standing tall. But if we still lived in a hot Southern state all the wrecks would have the same problem. I was able to diagnose and fix these problems myself at a reasonably low cost.

Drilled a small hole in the top of the housing and sprayed with plenty wd40 then seal over the hole with putty or silicon sealer to reduce evaporation. Worked a treat. The rattling startup and once warm rattle you got is the average chain wear
The cam hpfp never makes noise when it's broke also cam follower won't make noise unless it's already busted the cams lol been doing these engines far to long now

Similar problem last year, check the vent on the drivers side behind the rear bumper. It's there to let air out when you close the hatch. You could remove the bumper, but I was able to pull back the trim near the wheel arch and see it pretty easily. Quick patch with silicone stopped all leaks for me.

The drain tube on the sunroof is very tiny and if clogged you can get a flooded interior. Door lock buttons send implausible signals and the rear doors lock or not on their own. Open just the back windows and say goodbye to your eardrums. Use toothpaste on the headlights for a crystal clear finish. The rear latch is very easy to replace, just two bolts.

1 is the more so annoyance that started up few months after buying. Car is almost mint and was serviced pretty well, older guy got it as 2nd owner then me. Well for some reason it shrieks/squeels within first gear when taking off and sometimes coming to a stop then taking off again. When warmed up it use to go away at first but now its almost everytime i stop then go again. i let off clutch and it makes the sound as i give gas to go, same goes for reverse. Supposedly it could be the flywheel perhaps the rubbing as there may be 2 in it right? anyway wtf. everything else checks out noons that certain
also lights for plates on rear, service records show it was tried to be fixed at shops twice to no avail. i dont get it, is this common issue? maybe a connection somewhere?
also had the throttle position sensor go out ona ahot day i guess i did pull it a bit but still wtf lol aside from that issue everything has been great and mint the entire year.(minus idiots destroying my windshield after doing sunstrip, pushed back in the rearview and cracked the whole thing, got fixed for free but had some rain come in that i had to address afterwards. But thats not a car related mechanical issue >:(

@@andrewlaw but it's still an auto. It's just an auto with a different method of changing gear but it's still an automatic. Any vehicle without a clutch is 100% automatic. Just because a car has the option to change gear in a sequential way it doesn't mean it's not an automatic. Even VW classify it as an automatic. The log book states it's an automatic. I don't get why the fanboys get so upset when you call it what it is.
