According to some, this game has 2 main interpretations. 1 - We follow Gris (calling her Gris) as she is progressing through the stages of grief caused by the loss of her mother until she finds peace and is ready to move on. 2. Gris is actually the one who has passed away and we play the game through her mother's perspective - from broken/shattered to finally being able to restore the memory of her daughter and let her go in a final embrace. Greetings:) Gris means Gray in Spanish. And it s fun cause gris can be also a last name or surname as in english, but never a "name". I dont really think gris is the mother 's name or daughter 's. Gris is the emotional state of the girl at the beginning.
The statue is her mother, the hand that holds and protects her, who committed suicide due to depression... and jumped to her death. Everyone sees the statue as you can't miss it.
But is subtle without you realizing the context.
Here is the statue, before meeting the bird, now look at her feet, she looks down and is about to jump:

That style of the statue... with that size... you saw it all the time suffering but with that design, there are only two more statues, one that gives you the depression achievement:

And the next one is the acceptance achievement:

In fact, if you tried to sing to the statue that is about to jump it gave you the acceptance achievement too. At first, I thought it was a bug, as that is skipping two stages and maybe they even patched it later but if you think about it, if you accept that is jumping now you are accepting her death too. And you know why is that important to accept it there?
Because the irony of it is that is only when she got trapped in the black depression (as sickness and not a normal stage of grief) is when she can FINALLY accepted why her mom left her.
Everyone with empathy says that they understand people who kill themselves are desperate but when it happens near you, you feel almost hate to the "selfishness" of the people who didn't thought about the people they left behind, instead of keep fighting.
Again, this messages are subtle, so you can apply the story to yourself and interiorize the experience, just like the memory with her mom happy is very important and cathartic for her but not for you: you need to work and search for it on purpose as you as the player don't need it.
But if you really look for meaning the story is that one there, period.

The second interpretation is not possible in my opinion since you see the tomb of the mother in the final scene.

I was blown away when playing that game. I was alone, just immersing myself in it and when i reached this ending... It blew me away so hard, music, art, composition, scenes, perfection and so, so emotional.
Honestly one of those rare games that is a piece of art, glad you enjoyed it.
aw man what a beautiful journey... i won't be able to play it :( mentally y'know lol but for me the part that hit hardest is after all that work to bring the memory of her lost one back together she becomes completely consumed by the darkness again... the way she gets up and immediately starts singing (fighting) was so beautiful it really shows the progress one has made in winning their own battles. absolutely stunning great job devs!

This is one of my Favorite hidden gems games. A true masterpiece I'm hope the studio makes more games like this. I own it on my phone pc and switch. A must have for sure! 😃👍😍
beautiful very emotional, I am struggling with depression and pain constantly...after watching this particular 8bites' walkthrough, listening to the epic music, just that, gave me hope in moving on, endure all the challenges I always face coz thats what life is about....we cant be weak, it will be difficult but I know I can do it...thank you so much Ana for bringing us with you experiencing this magnificent game

This always makes me cry.
My feel about this game is:
The statue its her, and she gave herself another oportunitty to live, a second chanse to feel once more, the darkness cant touch her. She won her second chanse.. and a New path its open...maybe I wrong.. but this game helps me wiht my depression. Thank you Anna for play this beautiful game!!
