      For me there were two sisters (or child and mother). One's died, and other was broken so much, was in deep depression. And the soul of the dead was helping to the broken soul in depression to recover from the pain. and yeah, it was more goodbye. She helped to alive person to rebuilt her inner world after the lost, kissed her and left her, going to the heaven. This is how I saw this story. Gris was the last game my girlfriend and I played together before she got hit by a car, a day before New Years.
    We downloaded it on the Switch, and played through it all in one session. At the time, I was a little cynical of its platforming and message. I thought the ending was nice, and it portrayed a good image of what inner conflict is like. She teared up and got emotional, and of course I poked fun at her for it.
    Now she's gone, and she's never coming back. Seeing this ending again, I see my girlfriend as this young woman. The more I look at it, the more this looks like a story of accepting grief, or coping for loss. I can't help but picture my lost love as the protagonist now. She too was a beautiful singer. It really hurts my heart to watch this ending, but it holds a special meaning to me now, when it once meant nearly nothing.

    Okay so I know how everyone talks about 4:10 being the most emotional,and yes I agree that’s where my eye start tearing up, but it’s when the drums and the rest of the music bust in by 4:37 is the part where I can’t stop myself from crying. It’s the combination of the singing and the instruments and the colors being restored to the world that just makes those few seconds so powerful that it overwhelms you and you can’t hold your tears back, you just let them flow out.

    The beauty of art is that it leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation, everyone is allowed to feel and read it in whichever way suits them, there is no right nor wrong.
    To me, this is grief, transcending through all stages of grief, of letting go of your former hurting self, killing your sorrow, and ascending inti acceptance, when grief becomes a memory.
    But this is why this is such a piece of art, we all can see it in such different ways.

    For those who watched the secret cutscene:
    My theory is that the mother isn’t the one who has passed. But instead Gris.
    Gris is trapped in the recesses of her mother’s mind, hence the black miasma trying to make her stay. This explains the statues that show the same woman grieving in other arcs.
    She doesn’t want to let her
    daughter go. But her duet with Gris at the end is what “pulls her back together”. The stars throughout the game represent memories in some way. Which explains why the statue cries at the end and why Gris is seen ascending the stars. The memories will still remain with her even though Gris is gone.

    • @taddad2641
      @taddad2641 6 лет назад +93

      the black miasma could also represent her anger. perhaps she is blaming her daughter for leaving her. does not want her to leave.

      Nice idea, I think it could totally be valid.
      But all those symbols work perfectly both ways - either if mother was the one, who passed away or Gris. Those statues - I thought about them a lot - they make sense as depictions of the mother grieving over a child, but just as well in the case if the mother has died. See, we don't know the reason, if the death wasn't sudden, if it was due to some illness, statues could be memories of Gris of her mother, struggling to accept the inevitable. And so now Gris (in a mourning dress) has to accept it as well.
      As for the black miasma, I think it is a manifestation of her suffering, just as her dress is. Both are, in my view, are sides of the same coin. Loss has the potential to make a person stronger, to make them more adaptable, or to destruct them. So maybe when a demon takes the face of Gris, it indicates this force of self-destruction that gets over her.

    • @taddad2641
      @taddad2641 6 лет назад +37

      @@poppypollen4362 it is a good story in that regard. it can go in both ways. could be a girl trying to overcome her mother's death, or the mother's mind shattering from grief, as her memory of her daughter struggles to rebuild her.
      the miasma seems to be wrathful and possessive. it wants to keep gris from progressing no matter what. and the shadows of its being seem ot move somewhat like gris' dress too. could be gris' grief, or the form gris has taken in her mother's broken mind as she is overcome with resentment. the stage of anger can lead to one blaming the departed for leaving them, however irrational or selfish it is.

    • @Shinom4ever
      @Shinom4ever 6 лет назад +24

      The problem that I have with this theory is the beginning. Is the statue that is already shattered from the beginning and is just when the statue "stops singing" that it starts to break and at that moment the girl loses her voice and the explosion throws her in that grey world. Is not something that happens to the child. Also, in the "Negation" scene, we clearly see how is the statue who lie on the ground... And don't forget the "Acceptance" scene, where is the statue who is in a coffin surrounded with flowers... if that is not "acceptance of the death of a loved one" I don't know what another thing can means...
      Also, the Black color that absorbs all the colors has the child's face and is the only thing in that dream that doesn't want you to continue, and to let you always in pain. It seems for me more the 5 steps of grief of a child who loses her mother in an illness as the other guys say, because of the other way... I don't know how to explain the things I said.
      Also, the statue doesn't seem not even when is colored.

  • @Jafes2011
    @Jafes2011 6 лет назад +1822

    Here is my idea of the story.
    The giant statue is Gris herself, a young woman in depression, possibly after suicide attempt (that's why she is so broken). The little girl symbolises "childish" part of her soul, the one that represents dreams, desire to live and be happy, and it also contains her most treasured memories. The little girls tries to show Gris all the colours of the world, how beautiful the world is, also tries to wake her up with a beautiful song. The bird, the fish and the ugly face in the end symbolise depression. They want to kill the little girl and therefore kill Gris. But in the end the girl managed to wake Gris up. That moment when the girl kissed the statue and it shed a tear symbolised that Gris no longer hated herself, she began to love herself and see all the beauty of life. And in the end the little girl walked away, because she was no longer needed: Gris was already recovering.

      I really like this interpretation, but the chapters are named after the well-known five stages of grief, all but confirming that this is about the loss of a loved one, most likely the main character's mother. This is reinforced by the theming and mechanics of each chapter, which tie in very well with the associated stage of grief.

    I see why people think Gris died but, personally I see that her mother died. And that the darkness that followed and tried to swallow her is her depression and grief trying to bring her deeper into darkness. She's seen going through the five stages, as the achievements are called.
    When submerged then swimming up to the surface, desperately trying to get out of her depression, parts of her mother can be seen. Which is why I assume her mother is dead and who's she's trying to get over.
    But when she finally was able to get out and finally move on, the star stairway leading to somewhere is leading to her happiness and that she's able to finally come to terms that her mother is gone.
    Not only that, the game description says that Gris herself is trying to get over the loss of a loved one.

Because if this crature takes Gris's apparence the only meaning I see is that it is the embodiment of Gris's mourning for her mother. The embodiment of her pain, anger, et sadness. If the mother were the one mourning, the bird would take her appearence.

    My younger brother-who's also a competitive gamer-didn't like Gris, calling it nothing but "a fancy walking simulator." I understand that to some, that's all Gris is to them. But thinking about it that way made me really mad. Not only is the art and music lovely, but the puzzle aspects are so creative and the story is so beautifully written, even without dialogue. I've grieved many friends, lost both to death and to growing emotionally distant. I can resonate with this story in too many ways just to think of it as a walking simulator. It truly is a piece of art that any human being who has experienced grief can relate to, no matter the age, race, or cultural background. Not many games can do that.

The confusion overwhelming you at the beginning will melt, leaving you with empty pain. Your first birthday afterward will be quiet and bittersweet, hers even more so...Mother's Day will be so unbearably hard you'll want to kick down the displays of gifts and cards in every store and scream at everyone buying them... and then when the anniversary of her passing comes you'll suddenly be just quiet. Like the ending of this game your confusion will subside... the good and bad memories reconciled and as you visit your mother's final resting place, perhaps talking to her, you'll feel what you've suspected all along: just because she's gone doesn't mean she's not watching over her beloved child. Like Gris, we give her memory one last embrace and move on, knowing she's waiting for us.
      Don't forget to tell your Mom how very much she means to you. Enjoy every second, because the memories will be so much sweeter than even the purest honey when she's gone on ahead.

    I don't cry over anything, but I really saw myself in Gris - the blackness overtaking you as the depression swallows you whole, but once the statue (loved one) began to sing to her the world instantaneously was bright and beautiful again. She finally was able to flourish, and with the intensity of the music I didn't even realize I started to cry. That is art. I think everyone can find a little bit of Gris in ourselves, we all just want someone to care, listen to our cries for help and lift us back up to the stars. 😭

    My theory is that Gris (not sure it's her name but every one seems to agree on this) passed away and her mother drowned in grief and darkness. Completely heart broken.
    Gris comes back to help her putt herself back together.
    She help her reconstruct herself and see the colors and the beauty of life.
    The reassembling of the mother broken soul happens in a duet with Gris, which I think represents that she reconstruct herself through her most beautiful shared memories with her daughter.
    With a tear and a kiss , the mother accept her daughter's death and let her go.
    Finally Gris walks on the stars and go the sky where she now belongs.

      I know the description of the game says "Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life" and from the secret cutscene you can guess it's the loss of her mother
      But through the game, Gris seems to brings colors to the world for her mother and not for herself
      The darkness seems not specifically after Gris herself but want to stop her from saving her mother
      And at the end of the game it's the mother who is rebuilt
      It's the mother who is in tears as she holds her daughter
      It's the mother that let Gris go
      And then Gris goes to the stars, not the mother
      Nomada studios maybe intended to tell the story of girl overcoming her mother loss but I read the opposite from what actually happens in the game, to me it is the story of a mother overcoming the loss of her daughter. Maybe I read more than there is to read but that's how I take it.
      It doesn't matter anyways, a great game, more than a game actually.
      One of these things you experience in life that becomes a part of you.
      Thank you Nomada studios and thank you Devolver digital.

    *Gris is about the fear we live with, and finding voice to defeat it*
    That kind of fear lives inside of you. That kind of fear can become like a poison in the mind and of the spirit. It is self doubt. It is worry. It is remorse and regret. It is so many things that can’t be washed away by standing still and finding calm.
    It’s the kind of fear that stops you from simply doing anything. Gris is a game that wants to teach us something about these fears we hold inside.
    The environments themselves call out to the player, inviting them to pause and reflect on pain and loss and how to move on toward fulfillment and peace. You’re not simply moving through the environment, either. It reacts to you, welcomes you, and empowers you to think cleverly about solutions.

    The game really moved me, the gorgeous art, the beautiful music, the lovely animations, and even though I didn't know for sure what it was all about, I had tears in my eyes at several sections. A game that tells an emotional story with no dialogue or text.
    Video games are about more than just gameplay. It might be a little simple (but competent) as a platformer/puzzle game, but the artistry takes it to another level. It's at least a 9/10, just for the way it made me feel.

    What I see is a girl trying her best to escape the grasps of death multiple times (hence the black void), maybe due to an illness that makes her so weak that she can barely speak, and trying to stay alive through all the difficult obstacles she faces so she can stay with her mother, but she realized that it would continue to chase her, becoming more and more difficult to avoid. Each color she gains shows how accepting she has become with her fate, remembering that she was happy and has memories that became superbly colorful in her time where all she had was her chances to look backward, and with her last bit of strength, she was able to say her final words to her mother, or sing a song of the memories that she has had and obstacles she faced, such as that they were happy memories and that she was glad to have them with her mother, in order to convince her mother that it's okay to let her go, so her daughter can rest peacefully, drift off into the sky and sing to her hearts content, hence why everything goes white and then simply nonexistent before accepting that she has to move up into the clouds, through the stars, singing a final tune with seemingly weakened and very seperated notes.
    Edit:It's noticeable when her mother's voice begins to overtake her own as she walks up the star path.

      I think this game gives room to some different views

    If we follow the theory that Gris is dead and her mother is mourning her, the visual metaphor and the song combine really beautifully. When Gris begins to sing and summons up the black stuff, it's like the resurfacing of her memory has at first pulled her mother back together, given her something to rally herself around. But then the reality of Gris's death hits and threatens to overwhelm both of them; the mother, with her grief, and Gris, all her joy and colour blanked out by the grief. But the mother finds her strength.
    She begins to sing back, to interact with the Gris she remembers, to answer her daughter's demand that she be celebrated in her death instead of forgotten. The mother's part of the duet sounds just as grudging as it does grief-stricken. It's a little more wan and thin. It's a little more pained, where Gris's is plaintive but determined. She is giving into Gris; she will remember her daughter the way she would want to be remembered, she will let her move onto whatever comes next, but the mother will always be cracked by grief, even if she's not scattered to pieces.
    And that's pretty much the way it is with losing a loved-one. They won't stop singing in the back of your head against all the blackness until you let some of them come forwards and remind you of why you loved them.
