In this The Man Who Sold The World Unplugged guitar lesson, I will show you how to play Nirvana's cover of this David Bowie classic off of their MTV Unplugged album.
Before trying to follow along with this video lesson or the original recording, you will need to tune your guitar down 1/2 step to (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb).
Through a lot of the song there are two separate guitar parts being played. We will have Kurt Cobain's guitar parts which include the main melody lines and solo, and also Pat Smear's guitar parts which include the moving bass line during the chorus sections.
Both guitarists strum the same chord progression during the verse, but you will learn the slight variations on these chords that each of them plays.
Hopefully who have a friend you can play this with because it all sounds pretty cool when it comes together. Enjoy! #themanwhosoldtheworldguitarlesson #nirvana #guitarcovers
6:50 Chorus chords
9:11 Chorus Bassline
11:40 Guitar Solo
lol I swear to god I was trying to learn this song like five minutes ago then I saw this video haha. thanks carl
Marcsweirdlife haha that's happened to me before
Pierce Thomas yea it's happened to me like a day after but this one was like minutes after
God damn now all I can think of is donald trump jamming the fuck out like angus young, his hair just flapping as he dances in his little schoolboy costume.
Christian Montanari lmfao IM so dead now I have that image too
Good one! Hahaha!
Please never stop doing these tutorials, you are the best teacher on RUclips!
Your lessons are so accurate not like most of the tutorials where they teach u somehow with anything not sounding like original also by doing the easy version. There's no originality in those cheap videos. You give the best original lessons by taking the time & breaking into parts and upload it for 2nd and 3rd time too ❤️
Carl- another great lesson. You probably figured this out but both Nirvana and Bowie use the Mixolydian scale with a minor 7th for the riff that begins the chorus. C Mixolydian for Bowie and B for Nirvana.
man, thank you so much. your teaching is so simple, objective that i could play my first song in a acoustic in 2 days!
You still playing guitar, bro?
Thanks for the instruction - very helpful for a beginner. One note, the “mistake” isn’t a mistake at all - it’s an accurate recreation of what Bowie did with the vocal chorus. Give it a listen. Thanks again.
Really? I always thought that it was a mistake. Hmmm interesting...
it actually was a mistake, kurt never played it like that in any other performance. even in the rehearsal version he plays it without the mistake, though he does seem to hit the b string on the 11th fret at a different point, but it seemed more like he was noodling with it.
the reason he messed up on the actual unplugged performance is because he started the solo before the cello, which threw him off. in the rehearsal he waits for it to kick in first and then go into it, hence why he didn’t make the mistake on that take.
Carl, you are the man. Everytime I need help with a song there you are. Thank you sir.
Great Lesson Carl, but please create a lesson for "Black" by Pearl Jam.
warning: this song has barre chords
So transition them to open chords
@@joshtimmons7332or just play the barre chords lol
best guitar teacher on RUclips thanks Carl for all your lessons
1:36 Main riff

This is a fun song to play doesn't take long to learn if you got bar chords down sounds dope on electric too !
ah i nearly had it played by ear, just couldn't quite get one note.doh, never thought of playing it open, talk about complicating things! thank-you for the upload.
Best Man who sold the world tutorial ever!! Thanks so much Carl.
This was a cool lesson.., the mistake part is super cool, his acoustic is as Electric as my Les Paul LOL he even said before the song he knew where he was going to make that mistake that's kind of what makes it cool great lesson brother thanks👍
You Know You're Right by Nirvana
Punk Cobain that is there best song
Billy Hardebeck Yeah, it's one of my favs
Punk Cobain f sharp chord hammering on your first finger, c, d a sharp. Repeat
But it's not by Them you know
Great lesson, thanks. Best I've found, by far. I think he meant to play the solo that way. It adds great colour to the solo, and if you watch him play it he doesn't flinch.
KURT COBAIN E NIRVANA SÃO GENIAIS !!!
"fall to pieces" the acoustic version by slash and myles kennedy

thank you so much again Carl ! You're the best teacher and you always have my favourite songs ❤
As usual awesome job Carl!!
Love the detail. Thank you. I like to alternate pick the solo, seems easier.
Absolutely fantastic
Amazing song to say the least. Thanks so much for the lesson Carl
Thanks very much man, brilliant lesson!
beautiful! maybe there's just a mistake, when you do the major scale of C, I think in the track there's no B as you do but Bb so it's a misolidian scale of C. Could be ??
Man that was a funky way you played that A, did Kurt do it like that? Either way that was cool, I like it
yeah man kurt fingered chords weird a lot of the time, he definitely had his own badass style! nirvana's version of this song is easily one of the best covers of all-time! kurt's vocals are haunting and beautiful!
oxrjbizzle1984y yeah you're right Kurt def had his own style when it comes to guitar. Im familiar with a lot of his chord shapes but this A was a new one for me. I always thought he'd just barre it. Either way I love Kurt's playing style an he's one of my biggest influences. Now his vocals....he was on some next level, an to think he thought he was a bad singer....HA id kill for a fraction of his talent
thank you, first real tutorial i find of this song.
I think Kurt struggled with guitar. Even admitted it himself. Probably had a hard time playing the F chord and did what he could. More of a song writer and singer than a player
I think that the problem wasn't the chords really it was how he interpreted what Kurt Cobain was doing. The F chord wasn't a power chord at all. It was a F chord with the D string suppressed and sometimes pressing the G string a bit harder which resulted in that alternative sound. Keep in mind that Kurt Cobain used the middle finger to build the chord. It's a common technique in grunge music. It allows to simultaneously produce a filled chord but also switch between chords quickly.
Thats just his style of playing. If it sounds good it is good it doesnt matter if hes not following the rules
Listen or watch the unplugged. He says right before the song. I know I’m going to screw this up
Thank you I will learn this🙏
How come every time I think I have song down pat by ear you come along and show me a couple of things I've missed, lol.Thank god for you man,is hate to show someone me playing it not knowing that I am missing a few things, thanks again man🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks. Great solo!!!

Ok I'm 13 and recently I've been listening to MTV unplugged nonstop and I've learned "Where did you sleep last night" and "Jesus dont want me for a sunbeam" because those or the only covers they did, but I couldn't seem to find one for The Man Who Sold the World...the only one was Marty Schwartz and I hate that guy lol, you're the best Carl, thanks a million

I feel like most people can agree that Nirvana’s cover of the song is better than the original
Fuck no lol
It’s a lot like Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” originally recorded by nine inch nails
No tf
Nah, they’re both great in their own ways
Nah bowies version is way better
10:00 base line

Best lesson it was !! 💥💥💚
We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long long time ago
Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare
We walked a million hills
I must have died alone
A long, long time ago
Who knows?
Not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
Who knows?
Not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
The C scale run is mixolydian.

parabéns!!
can you do "oh me" next?
this isn't related to the video but how do I get my 1 and 2 chord to sound normal and not super hi pitch(not sure if it's normal or not, and yes it's tuned)
Kurt was a great singer but not a great Guitarrista but this song is quite complexed when you hear the original version of Bowie..I love that sitar in terms of harmony you can make it sound more interesting and Kurt was a not guitar composer in that sense he played simple chords. His forte was in his voice I'm the opposite maybe..
I used to do it on one string
The thing about the mistake in the solo is that it doesn't sound bad because he sells it as intentional with how he plays it.
Wow
Brilliant lesson, mate. Love this song & thanks to you I can now hack away at it. I reckon you'd have a killer voice too 👍🏻
Ozark reminded me of this song
I watched that to! 😁
could you do a lesson on "the funeral of hearts" by HIM please?
