I love the Nirvana Unplugged version of this song so, so much - Bowie is amazing but the Nirvana cover is just iconic. I was in high school when it came out and it just blew my mind.
The little scale riff I play, A3, D0, D2, D3, G0, G2, B0, B1....then keep my forefinger on the C-note on the B-string whilst forming the C-chord and playing it makes it sound ACE!!
This couldn’t have come at a better time for me as I’ve been listening to this song so much recently. Time to get stuck in and learn this one… thanks Justin, brilliant as usual!
I learned this some time ago and forget it. Watched again today and got it back. I guess I am suffering from old timers memory loss. Your lessons are outstanding. Best wishes from NYC.
You have helped me take my guitar playing up a level after years of stagnation. Im enjoying playing more than ever and having a great time teaching my son how to play. We have already started learning this song together, so brilliant timing for us on this release. All the best Justin my man, respect
Instead of the awkward shift to C# Major try Bb Minor instead. To my tin ear it sounds OK. It is in the same bar position as the preceding F chord and you are just moving the index/middle/ring finger shape down a fret. It also sets you up better for the riff. On the subject of the riff the F chord can be substituted by the F major 7 chord which is an an easy pivot from the D minor.
Great job! One thing I add, which I think makes the chorus a little tastier, is to use Db (C#) on bar 9(?) of the chorus ("I never lost control"), but on bar 17(?) ("With the man who sold the world") use Bb minor. The Db sounds really tasty when the harmony moves back to F, but, to me, the melody sounds a little harsh -- or not as nicely resolved or something when going from Db to A -- probably because, with a Db, there's the Ab note moving up to A in that bar, which, again, sounds off to me. And I think the Bb minor leans a little more into the minor cadence of the melody. Just my two cents, but check it out and see what you think!
sidenote I'm learning the song to sing it with my 9 year old... She's a little viking just finding her voice. we'll have a blast with this! Merry Xmas to all and to all...
Best guitar teacher on yt. Easy to understand for beginners and the way he teaches is great. Feels like you're sitting on your sofa and your best friend's explaining, how to play the guitar 👏❤️
Justin time ! 😉👍🙏 i was learning a few new Bowie songs and came across your version of this song. This is definitely the best one online I enjoyed so much learning it. Thank you so much Justin.
Been following you for a long time and boy....you've improved your singing by a thousand. And please continue singng a verse and a chorus of the lesson ...like you always do.
Just picked up my guitars and Ukes again. Hope you give us the whole album man. I’ve never learned too many chords and play by ear and visuals. More visuals and vibrations now but many thanks for all you do man. Thank you for sharing and helping make some of my favorite music possible to play again.
Thanks. Request more Nirvana here www.justinguitar.com/songs (scroll down). Cheers 😊 | close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Moderator on JustinGuitar Forum [ www.justinguitar.com/ ]
Love Nirvana's version of this Bowie classic and the gorgeous Cello that pops in and blends in the solo so well. I love Bowies version too who actually wrote it on his LP by the same title. Anyway here's one for you Egyptian Reggae by Johnathon Richmond
Terrific video. Thanks for all you do. I had been trying to learn scales lately and so when you talked about doing a major scale, I knew exactly what you were talking about. Or, at least I hope I do. Cheers.
Oh man I am going to practice this religiously and it will be the first religious thing in my life. This is my favorite song ever, the Nirvana Unplugged version that is. Perhaps this might actually get me to pull off my first barre chord.
Nice! I’ve actually been playing this in my Intermediate practice as a song to practice barres for - just play all chords in their F or A shape barre form. It’s definitely been helping to get my barre muscles strong. Definitely copping that intro tho!

Great lesson Justin, going to give this a go. Thanks so much! You're a bit harsh on your singing ability. I think you have an excellent voice. Definitely compared to me.
Really gd thanks, never been shown how to combine the chords with the riff. You said about suggestions from the MTV Nirvana unplugged. Well I like all the Meat Puppets ones, in particular Plateau. I can do the open G shape slide picking which covers much of the song but it's the final solo part, so beautiful, that I could use a look into!
This album is one of my all time favourite. That would be great if you could do "lake of fire" from the Meat Puppets who accompagny Kurt (I think he just sings on this one) and the others on this great stage performance. Thanks a lot for the wonderful job.
"Where did you sleep last night" would be great to give your treatment to. Cobain's painstaking vocals kind of steal the show in that performance, but there's that bluesy soul to that ancient song that's just beautiful

As always an amazing lesson for an amazing song. Any song off that album would be awesome particularly Lake of fire, but please include the solo lol 😂 Much love to you mate.
I love the Nirvana Unplugged version of this song so, so much - Bowie is amazing but the Nirvana cover is just iconic. I was in high school when it came out and it just blew my mind.
That acoustic guitar sounds absolutely beautiful for this song.
The little scale riff I play, A3, D0, D2, D3, G0, G2, B0, B1....then keep my forefinger on the C-note on the B-string whilst forming the C-chord and playing it makes it sound ACE!!
I do the same except that instead of B0 , I hit G3 followed by B1 and that keeps it consistent with the notes used in Justin's version.
Justin is doing all of the Nirvana's MTV Unplugged?! 🤩🤩🤩
Let's hope so!
its a bowie song
I hope so.
David Bowie is the original nirvana is a cover but I honestly like Nirvanas version better
Bowie is the best!
Thank you kindly Justin. Played this for a family member who is going through a very tough disease. Music brings light to tough times!
I'm so happy Justin finally decided to do a guitar lesson on this song
This couldn’t have come at a better time for me as I’ve been listening to this song so much recently. Time to get stuck in and learn this one… thanks Justin, brilliant as usual!
Yeah me too funnily enough
Gotta love "I spoke into his A" and "I thought you A'd a D"
Watch his Death Cab for Cutie “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” video for one of the funniest ones of these… you will see.
Absolutely brilliant. Best guitar lesson I have seen this year.
I’m glad you’ve never lost motivation to teach songs. Much love
I learned this some time ago and forget it. Watched again today and got it back. I guess I am suffering from old timers memory loss. Your lessons are outstanding. Best wishes from NYC.
Very happy to see so many Guitar Channels do these Nirvana Songs now that 'Nevermind' turns 30 years old this year!

Excellent lesson. Sounds SO good on acoustic!
Thank you!
Thanks Justin, Stellar explanations! And I love your metronome app.
Justin - you are, quite simply, an absolute effing legend! X

You are right. The correct chord at this point is a Bb minor and not a Db. The Db is an error.
Justin you're the #1 !!!! Fantastic cover 👏👏👍🤩
justin never disappoints one of ihe best teachers on youtube and great guitarist who explains each lesson clearly top man
Woooooowwwww thanks justin i bought guitar acoustic just for mtv unplugged... I'm so happy now you are beginning for mtv ....so much awesome
Excellent Justin really enjoying your lessons.
Thanks for another great song to practise!👍
This is a Really Solid and Explained well lesson of Blue Christmas, others tend to not have flow, this has flow and perspective. Thanks Justin!
sidenote I'm learning the song to sing it with my 9 year old... She's a little viking just finding her voice. we'll have a blast with this! Merry Xmas to all and to all...
The absolute best tutorial I’ve seen for this song, including a proper version of the intro riff 😀
Thanks heaps Justin. Really appreciate these lessons. You're a legend!
Thank you.. Really love this song... been trying to figure out from the tabs and listening. But this helps immensely...
Thanks for the lesson! (And your vocals on this are great!)

Quality Justin. Never thought I would say this but that suits ur voice
Bflat minor instead of the c sharp buddy, i got that from a Bowie song book in the 80s, always worked for me, the rest is spot on, love your work
Nice! I’ve actually been playing this in my Intermediate practice as a song to practice barres for - just play all chords in their F or A shape barre form. It’s definitely been helping to get my barre muscles strong.
Definitely copping that intro tho!
Okay, this is going to take some practice, but what an awesome lesson!

I love this song. And being a huge fan of Nirvana and Bowie I appreciate the quality of the tutorial that this guy is giving us. Real nice. Subbed 👍

wow..great voice, broski
Nice guit fiddle 🎻👌👍👏😀😎🎻
Yes you must make lessons of all the unplugged songs...even the pearl jam
Good lesson, I have been working on this song for a while now. A lesson for "All Apologies" from the Unplugged performance would also be great to see.
"Where did you sleep last night" would be great to give your treatment to. Cobain's painstaking vocals kind of steal the show in that performance, but there's that bluesy soul to that ancient song that's just beautiful

🤣 and the c sharp to the riffffffff 🤣 I cannot stop laughing at this its perfect
Lake of Fire would be a great next song to do imo!
YES
Awesome 👍
Amazing. Love it.
thanks justine
I've always played Bbm instead of C#. I'm sure that's what's on the official Bowie published sheet music?
If the C# is a challenge in the chorus Bmb works okay and is as was written in the David Bowie song book published in the 70s
Man, you rock!
As always an amazing lesson for an amazing song. Any song off that album would be awesome particularly Lake of fire, but please include the solo lol 😂 Much love to you mate.
Plateau would be a sweet lesson...i real proper lesson on that i think everybody would love
Well done
