You know, it turns out that according to the 5E Monster manual, Hydras are counted as Monstrosities and they supposedly originate from the dawn of the Multiverse when another Dragon Goddess fought Tiamat. Tiamat killed her and each drop of the Goddess' blood that fell to the material realms became a hydra, carrying a bit of her endless hunger. I was thinking of trying to homebrew some type of Elder Hydras that has grown old enough and strong enough to both become intelligent, and "reclaim their proper status as Dragons". They carry faint memories of their progenitor's defeat by Tiamat, and seek to enact vengeance. I'm digging this thing about Dzalmus Dragons, what if they were also children of this forgotten Dragoness? Rather than her hunger, they instead embody her wanderlust.
That’s how I’m gunna spin it. Like in the yellow dragon vid, Tiamat had a sister (named her Lernea) that had the other coloured chromatics. Tiamat killed her and without a racial-purity obsessed goddess to patron em’ and with Tiamat targeting them, the other chromatics began to dwindle and become new subspecies. These bad boys are one of em’. Not “chromatic”, not aligned with Tiamat, but not good either. In desperation, mourning and seeking power they sought out her blood, gaining their three heads akin to the birth of hydras (making em’ kinda cousins and yet further mongrels to the chromatics). They propagated more rapidly than other dragons and hold their stretch of steppes against most outsiders of any draconic clade, their only real predator being the occasional grey dragon Tiamat sends, littering the hills sparsely with petrified three-headed dragons.
@@DungeonDad Can you cover Hecatonchiers from 3.5e's Epic Level Handbook? They do have interesting lore, and you haven't covered enough CR-30+ Monsters.
Dragon as a group patron... I like this idea. I like the idea of giving my players a weird shared origin and being form the lands of a three-headed draconic overlord sounds really interesting as a basis for a more mobile and probably combative campaign. Thanks for another great video!
Now I’m imagining a party where everybody is subclasses into draconic pact warlocks, except the sorcerer, who naturally has the draconic bloodline. And naturally, being a direct descendant of the dragon means they’re probably pretty high up in the tribe. Probably a priestess or warrior. Possibly even the group leader or face.
For an added challenge, maybe give the head breath attacks that compliment each other, like one spits oil the others ignite it, or one speed jets of water and the other two electrocute the puddles, etc. (got the idea from How To Train Your Dragon)
I was thinking about young versions of it still having a dangerous breath weapon. You said the con damage can go away easily so I was thinking young versions could still do 1d8 con damage but have smaller aoe's.
That would be a good way to balance it, you could even make it so that it can only effect one player at a time. You could also scale it back to 1d6, or do both!
8:24 it would be secondary and tertiary. Im not trying to correct you, just letting you know for future use. Also, great pick for Monster of The Week. That breath weapon is just awesome.
2:38 "I don't know why dragons are always associated with breathing things..." Thats because dragons were always iconically fire breathers, thats their whole identity. It makes a lot of sense to switch up that identity to make it more interesting.
The D is silent, and its three heads combine into one, and has a special grapple, toss off ability! Enough said about any monster. Enough joking, great video thanks for posting.
Hi Dungeon Dad, I recently found your channel, and I really admire the quality and content of your Monster of the Week videos. Though there is one thing that bugs me, and that is how quite a few of these are so high CR that most campaigns will never feature them. Plus, there is already a ton of videos talking about super powerful creatures. I hope you will feature more lower CR monsters - eg. the Ascomoid and the Ghaunadan were really useful videos.
Welcome to the channel, thanks for being here! I definitely do my best to try and keep things varied up, so don’t worry, the next monster or two will be something a lot more low-mid level. Thanks!
Seriously? Damn i cant believe i never heard of the Dzalmus Dragons before now. It's the legendary and fearsome King Ghidorah! I am totally gonna try to talk my DM into using a Dzalmus Dragon as a child of King Ghidorah. OMG i may get to combine D&D with my love of the Godzilla-verse.🤯
Cool DND Creature concept & I'd mix it up to have each head have a different breath weapon. Also maybe have three different colored heads. You could easily just create the creature how you wish. I would also allow it to have arms and multiple tails that can be used as weapons in combat.
I have a Lvl 1 Drow Feylost Death Domain Cleric sworn to the Raven Queen. She currently only has 10 Constitution so only 8 HP but her AC is 17 currently so she isn't totally a Glass Cannon but definitely adjacent to that.
The reason why breathing elements is associated with dragons: dragons, serpents, represents the third stage of manifestation, the "wind realm", realm of "pre-matter", realm of electricity/magnetism/gravity, and therefore color and elemental forces before they are locked into earth and substance. this comes from the ancient tradition of great flowing serpents representing WAVEFORM. Dragons manifest the destructive powers of waveform. This is why they fly and many like water. This is why they are associate with whatever is in the air around them. This is why they can shift magic around. If you study quantum physics, you will come to better understand how and why dragon magic works in fantasy.
If you're wondering, this knowledge comes collectively from ancient traditions (symbolic psychology) plus modern science, dashed with an interest in dragons over the years.
imagine if the toss ability had a thing where if the dragon hadn't moved yet, it could start the grapple, move, and then toss the creature up to 30 feet at the end of its turn. imagine it grabbing someone, carrying them off into the sky, and then throwing them back down
I would imagine the culture of this dragon to be sort of territorial, and forming packs when younger. The adults roam the land with their barbarians, and the numerous young ones form packs of their own. This provides safety for the young dragons from the older ones, and as they grow, they start fighting among themselves, or collectively go after an older one, try to kell them and take over, and then duke it out amongst themselves survival of the fittest style. This would also answer the question of why doesn't this monster overpopulate if it reproduces so frequently. And I would describe them with battle scars on each and every one. The older the specimen, the more brutal the scars. Maybe even one that only has two heads, but those two are so fierce, they make up for the lost one.
To be fair on the pronunciation the "D" isn't silent is Dzalmus it's a "/d͡z/" kind of like the "Ts" in Tsunami is a "/t͡s/" so the "/d͡z/" is pronounced like a Z but with the tongue back and up where the D is usually pronounced. phonetically similar, though it does push the pronunciation of the whole word farther back in the mouth. "/d͡z/" though isn't really ever used in any dialect of English. Edit because for some reason half of why I typed was erased.
1d8? That means this dragon needs to breath at least twice just to drop a commoner! Except poor leper Jim, he and his 6 con can get fukt. Seriously though, maybe it should be 2d4 or even 1d10. Or is it their hitpoints actively drop with the con damage? Edit also since they mate frequently, did you find out if a wyrmling deals the same con damage in a smaller area or would it deal like 1d4?
@@officersoulknight6321 only to the bonus HP from your CON modifier, but a commoner’s HP is completely from their hit die so would not drop. Their CON score is 10 though, the breath would make it a 2 at best. Next, you or someone will say: “but they’re a freaking dragon, they can just kill remaining creatures with bites, claws, and gravity!” To which I say: yes but unless it gets to breath at least twice, the gas is still useless if it only reduces CON score and has no other negative effects, nor does the dragon have other abilities to capitalize on low CON. It won’t be able to sweep over a crowd of NPCs and take a bunch out with one pass. There aren’t many beasts it can efficiently hunt with its breath either, it takes too long.
Have an amazing idea for a story start! The party are all members of a barbarian tribe ruled by an elderly Dzalamus. The dragon has ruled and protected the tribe for so long that their culture has a heavy draconic influence. So one day, the ancient and powerful elder dragon foresees a great threat to the continent (worldwide threats are extremely overdone in my opinion). So the dragon summons the tribe’s greatest champions, tasking a member of the priesthood and a sorcerer descended from the dragon itself as their leader. I’m imagining a party of barbarians, fighters, maybe a warlock/ranger and of course a sorcerer; each with a single level of warlock as a blessing of power from the dragon. After striking out, I imagine the sorcerer communing with their lord through meditation, where phantasmal representations of the two side heads appear on their shoulders to speak into their ears.
If you ever wondered why dragons "breathe" fire It's because the church believed dragons were agents of Satan They were like walking portals to the underworld, so when they open their mouths hellfire leaves their mouths It's actually very similar to the thing the Mummy does in the Mummy movie, opens it's mouth and a swarm of scarabs flow out It's like that but with hellfire. The poison breath was eventually replaced with fire breath. Since fire was considered to be more closely demonic we linked to Satan and hell, rather than just the poison again the exact reasoning is not truly known but last I heard those are currently the leading ideas TLDR the earliest dragon spat poison in their stories since they were just giant snakes, and while their form has changed the idea of them spitting something has not
