Fuck yeah to the progenitors of stoner rock. They absolutely got the name from Greyhawk D&D. Originally named Sons of Kyuss after the Monstrous Manual entry.
The real question is who was pulling his strings? Who the heck was giving him those visions? I really don't buy into the idea that they're real future visions, it seems way more likely that they're a manipulation by some deity level evil... It doesn't fit how the Raven Queen operates and Nerull prefers his pawns to be cold and calculating rather than rabid and unpredictable. Some say he was one of Orcus' and that's possible. I definitely think it was something Abyssal or even Far Realm. This is seemingly confirmed by his transformation into an elder evil. It seems like the end goal was for him to succeed and become a god that brought doom to the world. This also points to the Abyss or Far Realm because the hells don't want to wipe out mortal worlds. It's interesting to see a Spellweaver obelisk being used. I don't think I made the connection before. They're super powerful but nobody should know how to use them because the multiverse was remade several times since the Spellweaver era. Again, this points to the Far Realm and Elder Evils, because there really aren't many other entities that would have earlier multiverse knowledge. My best theory is that he was an experiment done by an Elder Evil or Evils to see if they could create one of their own from a mortal being. Unless that was done before this, but I don't think it was... That makes the most sense to me. Other possibilities are that he's a puppet of Orcus, or.. Jergal? There's something saying his patron was Jergal and he gifted him with the first green worm but I think that's non-canon? There's also something connecting him to the Far Realm star Nihal... actually reading into it, the connection with Nihal seems very likely. It's an evil star made out of a mass of wriggling worms, after all. That link makes me think Far Realm rather than Abyss. Sorry for the long response lol I just wanted to figure out what was really going on because he always seemed like he was manipulated by whatever showed him the visions. Maybe it was Nihal and the visions are what it wants to do to Toril?
This is a great write up! Yes I left 2 of your points out of my video, in 5e it kinda just throws Orcus’s name into a possible origin. It felt pretty random and unfounded to me. And in my jergal video I do mention how it is theorized Jergal has a master plan that was taken from his memory and put in every worm of Kyuss. Jergal is also associated with the spellweavers, could be a link to Kyuss’ obelisk. I think your elder evil theory makes the most sense though. Great comment
@@The_NaturalOnesThank you! I do remember that Jergal wanted to become an overgod or something and removed his memory so Ao wouldn't know. Was giving up his portfolio part of that? I had forgotten that Jergal was a Spellweaver when he was alive and that would explain the knowledge of how to use the obelisk! I'll watch the video you did on him. It still seems that the Far Realm is involved and I'm not sure why Jergal would mess with that. I don't think you can have Elder Evils without that influence and there's the connection with the Far Realm star, too. I love d&d lore but it can be a frustrating puzzle sometimes
I'm currently running the Age of Worms campaign. Jergal, the God of the End of Everything and a being originally from the Far Realm, wished to become an Overgod. Jergal devised a plan to do this by first splitting his divinity between the three mortals Bhaal, Bane, and Myrkul, and split his mind across the trillions of Worms. Jergal then created a series of ruinous tablets prophesying the Age of Worms before enacting his plan with the Dead Three. Once the Age of Worms destroyed all life, the Dead three would reunite and merge with Kyuss to form the new Overgod, Jergal. A lich spell weaver eventually discovered these tablets and became obsessed with the prophesy. It then met with Kyuss after the priest found Kuluth-Mar and gave him the first worm. Before his ascension, Kyuss believed he would become a full God of Undeath, but Jergal's worm caused the priest to form into something in-between God and monster. TL;DR: The God Jergal created Kyuss as a means to become an Overgod. Fun Fact!: Based on the Age of Worms adventure path, the Ebon Triad (or the Cult of the Dead Three in Faerun) was originally founded by the followers of Kyuss.
@@sir.rettfordiii8824 I thought he was a Spellweaver god.. when I've heard descriptions of his alien form, its always a thin, insectoid humanoid with big eyes and that makes him seem like he was definitely a Spellweaver. Him being from the far realm would change things, but I think it wouldn't really fit his lawful nature and lack of connection to the Abyss... There's also a bit in Natural One's Jergal video that mentions a pod of Spellweavers bringing Jergal worship to Netheril, and I think Spellweavers would rather die than worship something from the Far Realm, given their history
Keep up the good work. Views will follow. You're doing a great job. I really like the videos where you speak from the perspective of a character. Props.
It says something about the epic scale of the Age of Worms adventure path that a trip through the Tomb of Annihilation is just an optional side quest for party to get some ladt last minute power-ups before heading to the final showdown.
I seriously debated making Kyuss the BBEG for my campaign but I ended up going for Atropus, thought I might end up mixing them somehow since they both are heavily related to undeads. All the Elder Evils are just too interesting, it would be awesome to see you covering more of them in the future. Awesome video as always, I really love the narration.
Just found your channel AMAZING WORK ! Seriously KILLLLED IT ! I’m gonna make my own game and I think Kyuss and his cult is a perfect BBEG ! Lovecraftian as heck
In volo’s guide to monsters it’s said that kyuss is or was a high priest of orcus the demon lord of the undead which actually explains a couple of things.
I have been trying to find a copy of the Age of Worms adventure path from 3.5 for years now. I want to read through it before I try to run it. Separate from that, I have wanted to run a campaign with Kyuss and Vecna choosing now to be the time they unleash their machinations so the players have to deal with two undead monoliths plaguing their world and maybe choosing to side with one over the other.
I have two character concepts quite similar to this guy, but one is a yuan-ti whom is a literal walking viper pit full of vioer snakes, while the other is a literal walking spider nest full of spiders of various species using a humanoid skeleton as a puppet for various things such as transportation and communication. How they both came to be i'm still working on the back story tho.
oooooo this would be perfect for a dystopia inspired dune setting dnd story. The age of worms, a world deprived of life, one last hope to end kyuss before all becomes lost forever.
Sorry to be a bother, but I'd like to know your sources so I can consult them too, I know about 4e Open Grave, but you tell more than is in there, and I'd like to do m own R&D on Kyuss.... I foresee and epic and horrid campaign

In 3.5e they had the worm that walks in the Elder Evil book. I used him as the center point of an evil campaign to bring him back. Awesome BBEG.
Sweet book, great BBEG for sure
I’m running age of worms in 3.5 rn and using the villains from exemplars of evil and elder evils this is going to be the best campaign of my life
Kyuss is also my favorite band from the 90s
It’s funny I had never heard of them until I started researching this video and found them haha. Probably inspired by Lovecraft
