    Hello. Thanks for the insights on this product, i was looking forward to buy it but there aren't many serious videos about it.
    A minor tip, "low cut", which is probably what ZOOM intended to communicate in this product IS NOT the same as "Low Pass filter". For the contrary, a LPF (low pass filter), as you are calling it in the video, LET PASS lower frequencies, effectively cutting everything above the cut frequency.
    "Low cut" was probably used so people more easily understand what the effect is, but (if it's not a low shelf filter) what this product has is a High pass filter. Cheers

      That's just the EQ in FinalCut Pro, any EQ should work, Audacity would be fine.

      The fires are still burning, but they are not near any towns. Lot of wildlife habitat loss, the smoke was so bad that birds were dropping from the the trees dead from smoke inhalation, even in areas 100's if Km from the fires. The towns that have burned down will take years to rebuild as they don't have the workforce to rebuild them. So it's not great, but the loss of human life has been far less than it could have been, the government had a new warning systems in place that saved so many lives. So that's the big positive out of the whole thing.
      It's funny, I have been watching and enjoying your videos and would not have guessed I had any influence. Your presentation style is so natural and relaxed, it's really a refreshing difference from the more intense style that sees to dominate the platform.

    Thank you for this! I am new to vlogging and wanting to improve my audio and bought the F1-SP. The challenge I am having is the low volume coming off the SD card directly off of the mic.
    My use case may be unusual or uncommon in that I want to get nature sounds (birds, wildlife, streams, etc.) and again, the volume is so low on the SD card of the mic I can't use it. Conversely, the 'noise' of the camera is bit much, but at least usable after filtering a few things in post. My thought is the mic wouldn't have the noise and I could simply sync up the tracks by using the 'tone' signal, but alas even when cranking up the volume of the audio track from the mic in post it still isn't of use.
    If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd appreciate it. I've messed with the gain, but that doesn't seem to help the volume. I am thinking there must be a simple setting I am getting wrong, but then again there aren't too many buttons to mess with.

    I'm thinking of adding this to my Sony AX53. The problem I'm having is that the AX53 has a automatic audio limiter that can't be turned off. The audio goes all over the place because of this. Especially when recording loud live music. The audio recording will go real low or almost cutout. Will this help with stabilizing the audio?

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  3 года назад

      This will record its own copy of the audio, as well as in camera if you connect the cable, so yes it will help. Will work best if you use the separate audio file and sync in editing.

    Hi - I have just received my F1 with the SGH Shotgun mic. I was eagerly waiting to try it out with a similar distance to your demonstration video. Prior to doing that I plugged in a set of headphones and walked around the house. I couldn't believe how bad the noise floor was when lifting the volume on the SGH-1 above 5. The noise is not a "Hiss" more like a distant ocean. As yet I haven't worked out if the noise is generated from the SGH-1 pre or the the headphone pre? I did a couple of test recordings and it is recording the noise. As yet I haven't downloaded it to FCPX to check the waveform. Any ideas??? Peter.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  3 года назад +1

      There are a few reports online of the SGH mic having a lot of self noise.When I live listen with headphones I get the same ocean sound/hiss. When I bring it into finalcut that sound is gone, but it if I run the audio through the compressor and use a lot of gain there is hiss/noise. I also have an XLR adapter and when using other mics there is less noise, so I do think it's the SGH mic, not the preamps. For me, if you use the SGH at a the right gain, and don't compress or boost too much in post, the noise floor is good enough. You will have to play with it to find the sweet spot. I would also disable the limiter in the recorder, as this is reported increase the noise floor. I'm also recording in 24bit 96k, even though I'm using in 48khz timeline, this seems to have smoothed out the audio? Which I can't make sense of but I'm sticking with.

      Please report back your findings if you think you figure anything out, I have been meaning to make a more long term review and configuration video on this setup. It is what I use for most of my audio in studio.

      @@markwiemels Thank you for coming back to me - You are a star. Just to come back to you on one point, I agree that with the inclusion of the limiter, it can lead to an increase in the noise floor. However, when live monitoring through headphones, It made no difference. I will try some recordings in 96k 24 bit and see what happens when I stick a file into FCPX. Ps - using the mic/line in created no additional noise when I connected to my mixer so maybe that's pointing the finger more at the pre in the capsule. I look forward to your long term review. Peter.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  3 года назад +1

      @@PeterMossUkulele Yes, I agree with the limiter not adding noise. That was my impression from my tests too, but I have seen people claiming that to zoom limiter decrease the input gain by 10db, then boost it by 10db digitally, which, if this were true, would have to think had some effect. I will so more testing for my next review. I think the Zoom F1-SP is a pretty good setup, even if it's not prefect, I have yet to find something so small and versatile.

    • @PeterMossUkulele
      @PeterMossUkulele 3 года назад

      @@markwiemels Just a quick update. I went ahead and uploaded some audio files recorded on the F1 along with the SGH-6 capsule into FCPX. The noise - although reduced - was still there. However, I found in the audio inspector a variable noise remover. I found a sweet spot of 40% to remove the noise completely without affecting the quality of the source audio. I just thought I would share that with you. Cheers, Peter.

      Eliza Köles, I used the wav format 48khz/24 bit. Wav is generally better than mp3, with both formats the bigger numbers are the higher quality formats, smaller numbers are lower quality but smaller file size.

      The shotgun mic is said to produce more self noise than is desirable, mine does too, it can be more or less noticeable depending on the situation and gain. You can use this video as a comparison as I didn’t do any noise reduction.
