A pro of a shotgun mic is that it is much more convienient to mount on top of camera, when you record video at the same time, which is most of the cases for anyone needing such a tutorial
A simple and yet very informative video from Cornell labs, if you are interested in birding then you should download the Merlin app by Cornell labs to your smartphone as it is helpful
I'm a beginner with shotgun mics and I use mine outdoor for recording birds. Using it for the very first time I was surprised about the good focus, but after a while (and after having analized the recordings) I found out, that the sound from the sides is recorded too, but 1) only the lower frequencies and 2) with a different phase. This makes the whole sound a bit like coming out of a toilet, and I have no solution for that problem.
Thank you for the informative videos. Im curious to know if you know anything about whats known as "Voice to Skull" technology and how to record it. Thank you for your time.
What an excellent video!! Thanks for the clear information and superb production. You mentioned shotguns lose their directional ability with lower frequencies. When you say low frequency, what range do you mean? < 500Hz? < 5000Hz? Does this differ greatly between different shotgun mics? Thanks!
I too have the Sennheiser ME66 and K6 -good info! I want to record to my iPhone XR--I have lightning to mic and headphones splitter, and able to playback what I record to my headphones, but I do not know how to set up this system so I can monitor with corded headphones what the mic is recording real time. Any suggestions?
I have just switched from my Sony ICD to Zoom H5 with an SGH-6 shotgun capsule! I'm recording calls for the past four years. Hopefully, I will enjoy more with the new setup!
Hi, I really liked your video, very didactic and captivating. I'm interested in capturing some sounds, like waterfalls, birds, wind..., to use in video editing on youtube (I think they call it FX sounds). Which equipment would be ideal for beginners, which is cost-effective and of satisfactory quality (the more compact the better, as I intend to use it on long walks where my house would be a backpack :) )? Thanks for the video and congratulations on your work!
Could you recommend a much smaller microphone still efficient and with direction? Also what kind of mic should I look for if I want to record in stereo (primarily outdoor nature sounds)?
A very cheap option that is great for someone starting out (since it can be attached right to your smartphone) is the Rode VideoMic Me. Only around $60, very small, lightweight, and easy to use. Obviously not going to get the quality that something like the one in the video gets, but still a pretty good option
Does anyone know how to fix this: so Basically I have an Olympus WS- 853 digital voice recorder, which I use for meetings and regular stuff, (although it's not as good as I thought it was despite being £85), I once recorded rain sound with it while outside just by using the handheld recorder alone but the noise capture was not the best of quality and the wind seemed to really mess up with the sound too. Does anyone have any suggestions for external microphones or other cheap but really good bits of equipment I could buy to fix the wind and quality problem especially when recording outside noise. If so I would really appreciate it 💛 if you could give full names of recommended products or equipment, or full details in advice. Thank you!
Hi Cornell, what would you recommend to use in recording rainfall? Also can you use a stand for the shotgun recorder so you dont have to hold it up for hours?
Does it still pick up your breathing if it is shoe-mounted on a DSLR & you're 1ft behind the LCD screen. ? If yes, do I want to use an extension pole ?
If they are talking in turns, I'd imagine the best thing would be to have a person hold the shotgun mic with a boom pole and aim it at each person when they're talking. If they're all talking at the same time, like having an argument or something, it may be better to just have it aimed at the center of the group as a whole from above. Not my expertise but those are my thoughts.
theres no such thing as a «game sounds» microphone. It's the same concept as with everything else, it just depends on the source that you want to record and the evironnement that you're in.
Low frequencies are relative, like speed, grandma verse an F1driver. *** So with respect to recording wildlife, and directional pickup/rejection, ******WHAT do YOU CONSIDER- LOW FREQUENCIES? Hippo grunts for sure, but what about animals? Cats, dogs, coyote howls maybe. In reading the comments, Does this dude EVER answer any questions? I wish he would.
Any of those sounds have low and high frequencies. If you really want to know what the gain is specific frequencies, just look up the frequency response.
5 years later, this still the best guru you can find on RUclips for audio recording.
This video makes me so peaceful and relaxed dont know why lol
Do you have no idea why?
The editing on this video is really good. I like the drawings.
Terrific information and demonstrations. Great work Greg.

Wow 💞
Are you George Lucas's brother?
Joey D lol I was thinking that
Joey D what does it matter.
Yeah he looks like him
That's what I was thinking
when the foam is not enough and we need a furry one? light air (no more than 3mph) is a problem with just the foam on the mic?
Why not a omnidirectional mic?
god damnit now im gonna have to get a field recorder and shot gun mic, fuck
Does it still pick up your breathing if it is shoe-mounted on a DSLR & you're 1ft behind the LCD screen. ? If yes, do I want to use an extension pole ?
lol no it doesn't, unless you're a REALLY heavy breather or breathe right into the mic.
wow excellent video.
can you please tell mw the which shotgun you used????
me67 ;)
@@soacker25 thanks
good
Yes ! Une bonne Pub pour le fabricant Européen Sennheiser !!
hi,i'm going to film a documentary about nature and animals in Costa Rica , would you recommend me the Rode VideoMic Pro or do i need a Stereo Mic?
I would suggest a good mono directional mic AND a stereo mic
What microphones does he use? I'm planning on getting into this but there are so many options to choose from. I'm thinking on a Sennheiser MKE600
you should have put on your list, sennheisser me66 with k6 kit
how do you record five people talikng? five shotguns?

you can use one omni directional microphone for that, if those five people are not far away from each other.
The furry wind screen is also known as a Dead Cat.
I want to record sounds for a game. Would the mic be good for that?
theres no such thing as a «game sounds» microphone. It's the same concept as with everything else, it just depends on the source that you want to record and the evironnement that you're in.
Would this Capture sounds being sent by neighbors hacking electronic? They know who they are
Hiw this sounds in voiceover in documentary
WWII Agents equipments 🕵️
Well that’s one way to record my dog
واسمك بهذا 😂

A cross eyed man with a shotgun is dangerous!
