As a teenager reading it for the first time I identified by Shylock and felt he was justified in wanting revenge really against humanity. I think Shylock really hated that these people were having a really good time, enjoying their life drinking, socialising, while he wasn't. Many years later it is true as you say that it takes maturity to recognise that wanting to hurt others because you have been hurt is a natural response but the most evolved reaction is to rise above it.
