I remember this from Four Wheeler I was 20 and this was the most epic thing ever at that time in my life. Love these old school rigs even though the rigs now are more capable, it still cool to see these rigs do there thing and this was a mix of high-end and homemade rigs in 98 that were driven on the street! That is so awesome.

Scorpion and and Quagmire still some of the most iconic TTC rigs of all time

Holy cow, 40's is the biggest tires, barely any beadlocks, lots of ground hogs, lap belts, no helmets, saw a kid in the back seat in the frame twister, friggin love it

I like this a lot more than the trucks on TTC now. These trucks are actually possible to build without sponsors

Its a different world 20 years later. Gota have tons of cash to build to compete. This is no longer a regular guys challenge.

    • @ramairgto72

      Agreed.
Not long after this, crazy purpose built rigs started flooding the mag, lots of readers started sounding the alarm, no more was it about your "above average" build, it was tube "Moon Buggy" builds.
I like both, but this is more fun to watch.

Oh this brings back memories. The first truck detailed, 1979 Chevy K-30, was the setup back in the 90's. Smaller mud tires in the front with the really big ones in the back. There was an awesome mudding spot in Jacksonville off Pickettville. I remember a truck that used a similar tire setup as the K-30 and the truck was called Splitting Headache. Pickettville was so much fun.

CRAZY HOW 20 YEARS AGO THE BIGGEST TIRES ARE 40'S AND HOW EASY THE EVENTS ARE COMPARED TO TODAY WHERE 54'S ARE THE NORM

And these were monsters compared to the 1993 TTC, which was won by a CJ7 on 33" BFG MT's.

...and these resembled actual street legal trucks, but I think the Scorpion was the vehicle that opened the door to the extreme overpriced monsters they put in TTC today. I liked these older challenges so much better because while they may have been expensive trucks, but they weren't unobtanium like the ones now.

moparman2500 It wasnt even that the "tech" for them wasnt there. I bet i could run 54s back then (if i could find them)

    • @wackomanx

Yep, 44's were the big dog tire size. I remember my dad had a K5 Blazer on 38's and he would always try and hit the holes at the mud spot where the trucks with 44's would go. Best days of my life. I would bring a toy truck with big tires with thick string tied to the front to pull through mud puddles.

When I went to Hollister Hills in the early 2000s, the mud pit really wasn't muddy. Kinda just.. a water trough. I did go once and it was just dry. I guess they hadn't put any water in it. 56:23 and that hill didn't really have those berms. I guess they had worn down since that time. It was still a cool place to go wheeling, though.
