The Tow Test and Frame Twister! - Top Truck Challenge 2015

- You know what a truck pull is, right? Well our tow test is way better: our track extends 150 feet, climbs 13 feet in elevation, and has a maximum angle of approximately 16 degrees. Each competitor’s rig is tethered to 5-ton 6x6 weighing in at over 36,000 pounds. Each competitor is allowed one pull, no time limit. This event grabs competitor’s full attention, because it’s the first event and has the potential to quickly weed out weak components.
Through the years, the Frame Twister has evolved, and for 2015 about half way into the course, competitors arrive at the infamous Squeeze Rock section facing boulders, the dogleg, and the dreaded log section. In case you’re wondering, the Frame Twister at Top Truck Challenge really has twisted vehicle frames over the years. It has also wasted driveshafts, destroyed tires, and thrashed suspensions. Each competitor is allowed 10 minutes to complete the Frame Twister course. Hey, you didn’t expect it to be a run-of-the-mill first day did you?

I think my favorite part is the commentary from back and forth between the host and driver.
The Dan Osterhout one:
- "Alright Dan, that looked really smooth. I mean no stutter, no-n-no no stammer, no bounce whatsoever-almost. Were you pleased?"
- "Absolutely. 'Love the suspension."
- "It was awesome! It was nailed down, I-think-you-did-a-good-job."
- "*Assured Nod* Absolutely."

I love how in this year the rockwells are breaking like crazy. But the 14 bolts and Dana 60's are CHAMPS!!!!
Every year I think the same thing. " boy this is a badass competition... But man does this host suck".

BiffBallbag Sadly, yeah. :( But, it even states on the MT Channel that it only airs so often.

Proper trucks! I find this way more entertaining than the diesel power challenge.

How to be a top truck competitor this year...
1. Buy a Chevy
2. Make engine upgrades or don't it doesn't seem to matter.
3. Beef up the axles
4. Use the rest of the stock drive line so that way when it sees the slightest bit of stress it takes a dump
Seriously, are these the best trucks you could find motor trend? There are a couple rigs that stand out but, the majority of these trucks should of stayed at home; along with the announcer.

RubiconJoey this is a blue collar DIY event bud. There's no strategy in spending top dollar on top of the line parts. Spend money on what's needed or fabricate it yourself... oh and bring lots of spares, It's all part of the fun. You are right though looks like the majority of readers are Chevy fans :/ lol

pretty disappointed in the selection of trucks this year, almost the whole field is the same
yea when he attempted the truck pull and pretty much broke half of his truck, it was pretty pathetic.

+ExplosionWard9 yea there's always been a solid arrangement of different rigs. don't get me wrong, I love watching this, have been since it started. but I definitely am disappointed with this year. also been hoping that they would change up the course a bit. in my opinion ultimate adventure is better. always different.

It still amazes me how many people enter competitions like this that have done nothing to limit axle-wrap. The smart guys were running four-links all around. The other guys are not worth mentioning, since they never should have signed up for this in the first place.

Bowman really needs to put some 4 links on those real leafs. The torsion is going to wreck his drive train if he doesn't make that upgrade. Not to mention I'm going to say thats why he had to finish the frame twister event in 2 wheel drive.
What does the tow test have to do with wheeling, I've never got this test. It basically makes it so the low hp trucks cant win overall.

I live in town. Some of the rigs that go in there on a random day would shame many of the trucks that get selected to compete.
I wouldn't doubt it, some of these rigs don't look built very well. I'm not sure what the engine rules are, but forced induction would make the tow test a breeze

Jesus this interviewer/host is annoying (his screaming and ruining the audio). Also, a compressor on the mic would've been nice so the audio didn't peak all over the place because of his awful screaming.
+halsoy EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR. Just imagine how much better would be this series if they used a competent but not goofy host. And some goddam compressors on the mic.

Hmm, quite a number of fellow Canadians this time round.
I would have run tractor tires filled with water or just fill the ones they have on there with water to give them more weight I also would have loaded the rig with every jack and gas can I could fit they cant get the power to the ground very well.

The rigs running 2.5 Rockwells are almost better off with Chevy FF Corporate 14-bolts it seems...rear ends letting go and all.

+Michelle Collins True, but rock bouncers/crawlers aren't capable of deep water like in the Tank Trap. Every other challenge though, a rock bouncer would do pretty well (maybe not the tow test because of weight, but still)
