- We finally decided to train out cat to use a kitty door so we could move her litter box into the garage. My cats growing up always used a kitty door so I thought training would be easy... It was not. My cat did not like the idea of going through the kitty door, it scared her.
In this video I'll take you through a step by step training method that worked for us and include tips and tricks to incentive your kitty to use the door. My cat is an adult cat, so dont feel like you can't teach an old cat new tricks!
Here is the kitty door we ordered on Amazon, a steal for $15.99!

I taped open our new cat door and my girl immediately walked through no problem. Thank you 👏👏
Awesome!
I have a outside condo for 2 outside Cats i care for. Its heated and insulated, with 2 of these doors on the house. Before it gets too cold outside, i put it out there. I don't think they have used it yet. I put treats inside this afternoon, im definitely going to use the tape. I almost removed one of the doors just to get them acclimated. I want to thank you for the tips, i hope it works. I paid a lot of money to keep them warm, hope to god they use it. Michigan gets so cold. keep you posted, thanks again 👍
You bet! Hope it goes well!
Thank you so much for doing this video! It worked so well! We got ours for the basement for the litter box and she was very hesitant at first but now she goes through like it’s the easiest thing in the world!!! 💕💕💕
Yay glad it helped!
Thank
You for this!! I got the exact same door with the magnet and we started feeding the feral cat our neighbors (that moved) were feeding
Thank you! Got the same door and have been struggling so this is a big help! 😀
Glad it helped!
You can use clothes pegs to keep the flap open. One on each side as near to the hinge as possible.
good idea!
Pretty thorough video this. This'll def help, i have a rescue cat so hes almost 2 and lived in a shed before we took him on. Might be a bit of a challenge lol.
Glad it helped, bets of luck in your training!
@@CaelaCook its helping already. Thankyou from the UK.
Awesome!
Thanks for the tips! Just installed a cat door and I will try this right away. I never would've thought to use tape to keep it open!!
Glad it helped!
i just got this for my cat and this video really help he’s learning so good thanks!
Awesome thank you for the feedback and glad training is going well!
We're in the middle of training right now. One thing I'm not a fan of, and there's no way to prevent it, is how the door more or less snaps into the neutral position due to the magnet. It has startled my cat. I hope she'll get over it soon. 🙂 But there's nothing like a good food bribery to get them to go out of their comfort zone! 😆
There may be a slow close door, similar to a slow close toilet seat or trash can. Best of luck to you!
Okay I think I’m trying to rush my one brain cell ginger kitten. I’ll leave it taped up for longer. He’s not super food oriented so I might have to let him get a bit hungry and lots of encouragement!
Good luck!
Out of three cats, one will still not use the door, so I'm too searching for vids to help me. I also kept the flap open, but maybe i left it too long, (months) because she refuses to use it if it's not open. I'll try the slowly lowering it next summer, it's already too cold. The one who got it the fastest was my big former ferrel cat; go figure. Maybe, before me, he survived by being the neighborhood cat burglar through other people's cat doors. Anyway, thanks for the vid, I'll try this.
thanks for watching, yes the slow lower works great!
My cat did the same thing :)
YOU COULD BE A PROFESSIONAL CAT TRAINER! Thank you for the content!! ❤️🐱
Yay! Glad you found it useful
It never dawned on me to try and leave the door open by taping it so they get used to going in and out, literally just tried this and already hes in and out so I am hopeful my Bron will soon learn - he was alpha and feral before i adopted him so hes a little stubborn but after seeing an immediate change I'm already hopeful that he'll quickly learn. Thank you
Yay! You bet!
@@CaelaCook thanks again! This worked a charm. After doing this it only took about 4 days for him to start using the door on his own and now he is in and out all the time.
Awesome! I’m glad
Awesome video. Good to see you have a magnetic flap too.
Thank you!
You are fabulous! Please keep posting? If possible may I write you for advice? Thank you and have a joyous holiday season. ~Mark 💝
Of course thank you for watching!
Thanks for the great tips!!
You bet!
thank you for this video this is very useful for me . I have a seal point siamese cat so he is very intelligent so am hoping that he eventually gets the idea. he has sniffed the cat door allready.
Awesome! Good Like training a Siamese are very smart!
Ordering this for my 3 cats so I can move their litter box to the garage. Already have their old school one there.
Awesome!
Hey there, is that door M or L? I'm planning to buy from Ebay for my cat, and didn't know what size is better
Hello, the link is in the video description!
4:55 was a great example, thank you for that. 👍🏼 🍑
You’re welcome glad it helped!
Man I knew someone had to say it
kinda forgot why i watching this....
i just squeeze myself thru the cat door and now i don't have to go tov the effort of unlocking the big door anymore
Wow, you must be very small or have a very large cat door😂
I bought a cat door and startes to use today, my cat went through 4 times while i am openning the door with my hand, it was a huge success for 2 hours for me. Then i have seen this video, taped the door and He went crazy, going inside and outside by himself. Thank you very much
Yay! Awesome!
Thanks
You bet!
That works for cat coming in but what happens when she goes out? The flap will be in the wrong angle?
The door allows them to go in and out. You could do the same reining method on the inside and outside if needed
Awesome video I bought 2 extra large cat doors
awesome! happy training!
Skittles caught on really quick on how to use her door.
Awesome!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Any update? How is she doing with the door now?
We actually moved her completely outdoors but she was doing good with the door prior!
It's funny I'm doing the same thing and it just so happens we bought the exact same cat door lol complete coincidence. Today is the first day with it. I'm gonna try your method tonight. Ill let you know how it goes on my two STUBBORN cats
Awesome! My cat got great at using it but I still caught her peeing in the house 😠 now she has to stay outside
@@CaelaCook oh no, how frustrating. I had my dad make an area attached to my basement for the litter boxes. The cat door was my idea to keep out the draft. I have one litter box out there and one still in the house to try and deter accidents. Of course though, my cats are now just using the one box. Grr cat mom problems lol
So annoying! I was so mad when I caught her going
Thank you for sharing your feelings!
Great tips!
Thank you!
Is my cat dense?
😹
She’s beginning to understand.
The problem with my cat is, she doesnt care if I dont feed her. She will just stay out side and catch her food.
try something extra tasty like tuna!
I have this flap but wont lock
Is it the same brand? For this one I have found it won't lock unless the flap is in the proper position. If you look closely you can see that the flap needs to be sitting between the 2 tabs to be locked. Hope that helps!
@@CaelaCook yep it the exact same one ive tried all sorts but wont lock at all ive had cats coming in beating my poor cats up ive now ordered a micro chip one
Bummer maybe the plastic tabs broke it’s def not the best design😏
I had the same problem until I gave it a push out. When it swung in it had enough momentum to sit properly on the inside sill and it would lock. I can now lock it every time. It isn’t the best design but I did get it to work.
Awesome! Mine did the same!
I would worry my cat would run away and be hurt out there.
Cats are smart and self reliant for the most part 😻
You are smart to be worried about your cat being outside. There are lots of things out there that are dangerous for cats. Other cats, dogs, poisons, cars, mean people, and depending on where you live hawks, owls, coyotes, etc.
Yes, if you want to adopt at shelters around here you have to sign that you won't let the cat outdoors. We built a catio.
Hi Cat Hudson
Hello! :)
Its was hard to fully focus on a cat in this video O.O
thanks for watching!
Ummmm why? What do you mean?
@@kellawiki they find her attractive
smh
@@Macabresque jealous? You should be.
In less than 30 seconds 2 strange reasons for door. I gave up
I’m confused but thanks
@@CaelaCook I think he meant a hawk swooped down and ate his kittens through the door. So sad 😭
Too much talking and too little action
😹
so basically starve your cat until she's skin and bones and barely clinging to life then she'll use the door....mmkayyyy NOOOO!!!!
you're funny thank you for sharing your interpretation.
Relax 😂
