If you aren't aware of them you should check out Stone Sour. Corey Taylor is the lead singer in both Slipknot and Stone Sour. They're a totally different animal and you'll be shocked by the vocal range Corey has Edit: dip your toe in with through the glass Also a good call on the hip-hop vibe as spit it out was a diss track for the local "metal" radio stations that refused to play them
Although the band has three percussionists, probably about 95% of what you hear is the one and only Joey Jordison, the main drummer. He was absolutely incredible and in hindsight pretty much was the driving force behind the band's sound early on. He's the one that brings that 'machine gun' speed and intensity.

@@mollyesanborn Yeah the other two are known as 'custom percussionists' and use big drums that they stand behind. They're only really prominent in the mix on percussion-heavy tracks and stand out as having a deeper tone than the regular drum kit. They also use beer kegs for that metallic sound that you picked up on during your review. The additional percussion is really only used to accent the main drum kit or add an extra layer of depth and heaviness to certain sections of songs.
Rest in peace Joey and Paul. You've opened the door in to my favorite band for the last 20+ years. Corey Taylor (Vocalist) is incredibly talented, and this band knows how to produce killer album after album.
Their follow up album to this is a must. It's titled 'Iowa' and is highly regarded as their heaviest, darkest, most intense album by far, as they went through a really dark time between their self-titled album and the recording of the 'Iowa" follow-up. It was also a response to many labels wanting to sign them only if they went more "radio-friendly", they went to a dark place and did the opposite. A track on there called The Heretic Anthem is directly about doing that. It's definitely a must after now hearing their debut album.
Quite literally, they aren't allowed to use as much insane samples as they did for this album, and those are key of how sinister this album gets. And that's even without going for how both Paul and Joey played a big role at this album's sound, RIP both of them.
This album came out at just the right time for me. As an angry/moody 16 yr old that was progressively getting into heavier music, this was damn near peak. Saw them headline the second stage at Ozzfest 99, and was blown away by the intensity of both the show and the audience. Everything behind the first three layers of people at the stage felt like a giant mosh pit.
You should check out the song "Purity", it was originally a part of this album, right before "Liberate". Very good song, it was taken out due to copyright issues or something of that nature. Great reaction, keep doing these great albums!!

SlipKnoT is nothing without Sid and Craig. The eerie sound effects and samples they provide are to notch. It creates a perfect atmosphere. (Not overlooking everyother's contribution).
@@food223 heck, even when talking about sampling in particular, people usually just go for Sid, as if Craig isn't the one layering and sampling all those noises giving the whole thing a more sinister yet interesting atmosphere.

When Slipknot came on to the scene there was nothing like them or even close to the speed and savagery of their playing- kinda crazy to think of a band like this now days being as main stream as they were, you would see their shirts all over school Ok going to enjoy your video and then get myself ready to see Tool live in concert this week! If they are touring in your area I highly recommend everyone.
I think you are talking about more mainstream oriented/alternative metal subgenres? As the black metal/(brutal) death metal scense were already developed very wall and had a lot of bands which were much faster and more savage... Anyway, Slipknot never was my cup of tea, but they've definetly had some "vision" and originality, which is hard to deny of crpse.
This is an older video but these dudes were absolutely insane when they came out. They were to my knowledge the first band like this to breakthrough the mainstream.
That "rhythmic pattern" in the background during Eyeless is a style of dance music called Jungle / Drum & Bass and that particular style of drum pattern is called an Amen Break. Anyway, I was just here for the reaction to Eyeless. Don't care for Slipknot, just love that little Drum & Bass intro. So B-Key was more of the Dark Side, Tech-Step stuff, but there's also Liquid DnB (really chill and lounge-y), Jump Up (2-step beat with high energy for dancing, but also quite goofy and corny sounding), Neurofunk (2-step beat, harsh synths - I personally find this style kind of boring), Intelligent DnB (evolving and progressive beats and sounds - usually minimalistic)

They're luckily one of those bands you don't have to worry about having a bad album. The sampling and turntable work on this album is monolithic, complements the tone of the songs so well, the whole concept of the record is about becoming insane in the real world, very cereblral subliminal record, loved your video and comments, very authentic and I loved that you paid attention althrough. suscribed!
I completely agree! Someone else in the comments posted a link to a video playing all of the samples that they used on this album, and there are so many I didn't even pick up on during my first listen through. It's really incredible how they incorporate all of those different sounds.
Man I love the first two Slipknot albums. They are both really good. I always found it interesting how Slipknot where labeled as nu metal. Sure there are nu metal elements in the guitar tuning and some riffing, the hip hop elements and the use of turn tables, but there is also death metal and black metal riffing, drumming, and production and even some industrial elements. Makes for a unique eclectic mixture that I don't think has been perfectly replicated by any other band, though many have tried (the closest that comes to mind is the album Kostolom by Slaughter to Prevail).
Yeah, I found it really hard to pinpoint a specific genre for this album while listening to it. Definitely a lot of industrial elements I was picking up on, which I love. A great blend of sounds for sure. I'll have to check out Kostolom now and see what I think of that one.
@@mollyesanborn Kostolom is a pretty good album. It's sound is essentially answering the question "what if Slipknot made a deathcore album with partially Russian lyrics?". Worth checking out after listening to some more Slipknot.
That's the best description I've ever heard of Slipknot. It sounds like someone's sanity is coming undone. I love it. I listen to Slipnot everyday on the way to work.
@@mollyesanborn Yes ma'am. You really aren't missing much honestly. Slipknot self titled was truly a great album, but I think Slipknot really hit their stride, on "IOWA".
This album is one of the defining records that have changed my life (musically and literally). I was a introverted, quite teenager, sheltered from everything. English isn’t my first language so I didn’t pay to much attention to the lyrics but the energy and rawness captured me. Though this music I could express my feelings. It gave me energy out of nowwhere. I started dancing in my room. I felt understood. Before I discoverd Metal, I had mostly to radio music and hip-hop. So Nu-Metal (mix between Rap + Metal) was the next logical step because I was looking for harder, more intense music. Although this album is heavy af, it has a lot of clean elements in it and that is what made me fell in love with it. I need the mix between heavy and soft vocals. It made me feel alive and full of energy. It was later in life when I looked at the lyrics. The dark and personal lyrics fit the album very well. It might sound contradicting but the darkness on this album has helped me to keep the light in my life. For that I am forever thankful. Metal has made me a more calm and collected, more relaxed human being. Slipknot is a great part of my life.
Joey Jordison's impactful, precised, perfect sound with groove while playing fast, godlike, insane drumming skill is so underated. He inspired/influenced so many people too. He's our hero. Competition is not applicable. We love and missed you Joey. You are my world. ❤️
Yeah, Cory's vocals are insane. Pretty much guttural distorted yelling. So passionate. When I listened to this as a teen I was blown away how brutal music could be.
LOT of memories with this album ! Just for information, Eeyore is theorically not the 15th song, but also the 14th with Scissors, because it"s originally a hidden track. Please do a Fear Factory album !
Super cool to see someone react to this album while clearly knowing a decent amount about music, picking up on which instruments and production elements are there is cool. You really appreciate the layers and genres here and so do I! This album is incredibly unique and underrated for sure.

Their follow up album, Iowa is an absolute MUST! Most of their fans consider this album and ESPECIALLY Iowa as the gold standard for everything Slipknot. Iowa IMO is easily their most solid and bad ass album from start to finish. Everything after is hit or miss. Each album has some great tracks, but then there are some that are just... eh.
I haven't listened to this album in a while, but after this video I confirm it's just as I remembered, pure madness lol It's interesting how you immediately noticed the amazing rhythm section: besides having a great drummer, the band has two additional percussionists which are usually overlooked, but they make a huge difference compared to any other band. Also, all the strange sounds you heard throughout the album that made the whole thing feel even more insane are thanks to the TWO DJs (yeah, there's nine guys on this record, it's crazy). And the voice...ooooh, the voice! There's nothing I could say about Corey Taylor that you didn't already say in the video: the guy is just an amazing singer, super talented! And if you enjoyed his clean vocals, wait until you hear Slipknot's third album: starting from that record, the band added A LOT of clean vocals, showcasing how great of a singer Corey is! With that said, if you want more Slipknot I recommend going in cronological order, so the next one would be Iowa. I'd say it's even heavier than this one, even though it's not nearly as crazy: there's a more "methodical" violence in Iowa, it's heavy and menacing in a more rational and controlled way, if that makes sense ^^' see it like this: listening to the self titled is like watching Leatherface in action, while listening to Iowa is more like watching Michael Myers. The video was very entertaining as always, I'm looking forward to see more Slipknot on the channel ^^

I had heard a lot of hard stuff like Cannibal and Deicide, but Slipknot made heavy music groove. So far I’ve seen you enjoy this album, but I hope Purity is on this playlist.
I love the first few slipknot albums, you picked up on everything I noticed initially too! That dark, energetic, but also playful tone to their sound. It's really a direct expression of their personalities overall. They went through a lot of fucked up struggles at this time in their lives, but no matter how dark they got they always found ways to make it playful and light too. Kinda similar to how Jackass works actually. It's a way to watch what would normally be pretty fucked up to witness, and instead turn it into something accessible for all. Also I'm glad you kept picking up on the percussion elements, because in early interviews they mentioned that was a main goal of theirs. To create this overwhelming percussive sound by using the 2 side percussion kits along with the drummer. Doesn't always come through in the mix, or even live, but when it does come to the front it's something special. Also if you aren't yet aware, there's 9 members in Slipknot. All the sounds you hear are actually someone playing an instrument. Even the electronic and atmospheric samples. Lead vocals, 2 guitarists, bass, 2 percussionists, drummer, DJ, and sampler. So even live one member, Craig 133 Jones, plays a keyboard with a laptop to do all those atmospheric samples live. And Sid Wilson does all the DJ turntable record scratching live as well. It's impressive as hell to witness them all play together. Or even write cohesive sounding music with that many people lol. I'm just glad I got to see them live with their original member lineup, RIP Paul and Joey, back in 2009 in San Jose CA. Was front row near the center, it was one of the greatest concerts I've been to, still to this day. Anyways I love seeing people work their way into the heavy side of music and metal. There's so much to appreciate beyond the intensity and aggression, even in the more extreme end of the metal spectrum. I'm excited to see if you end up going down that path eventually and check out some of the current heavy bands out there. Like Slaughter to Prevail, Mental Cruelty (a personal favorite right now with their last album), Brand of Sacrifice, Shadow of Intent, Enterprise Earth, Archspire (incredible technical death metal band), and many others. But working your way up to those bands is a fun ride. It took me over a decade of listening to metal to get into that more extreme side and now it's just normal lol. I started with bands like In Flames, Skindred (super fun reggae rock band), All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Within The Ruins, Periphery, and a bunch of other hard rock, metalcore, and post hardcore bands before getting into deathcore and tech death, and prog genres. So yeah sorry for the ramblings, but hopefully you'll work your way to these bands one day, it's refreshing to see someone go and listen to albums front to back in one sitting. I think it gives a better perspective on a bands sound this way. Some of my favorite songs are usually not the singles or popular ones that have videos. There's always hidden gems inside each album. And in metal a lot of the time albums are produced so songs blend from one to the next, and are curated with an ebb and flow in mind. So the listener doesn't too worn out with 5 fast intense songs back to back without some break and variety change in between. You only really can pick up on that extra work by listening to the full album.

And a DJ too, now those sound effects make sense! And I totally understand the progression you're talking about in terms of listening to this music. Had I heard Slipknot for the first time just a year or so ago I'm not sure if I would have liked it... but it's almost like I've gradually been training my ears to start to appreciate the nuances of this style of music and now I'm addicted. Amazing I love everything about this reaction it was really genuine and you described them perfectly, Slipknot defenley has their own UNIQUE sound I have never heard anything like them especially this Album I love it so much the 4 tracks have such different styles it really is so different such a well put together work of art.
I was today years old when I figured out that Eeyore is the name of the donkey from Winnie the Pooh and Slipknot used that for the title of one of their songs.

They truly came out swinging with all the rage of the universe with this album. It’s the soundtrack to my 11-13 year old self. I’m 34 now so it’s been a part of my life pretty much the entire time.
This album is an absolute masterpiece, I listen to this every time I start my workouts. It never gets old, and I am happy to see another person enjoying this album.
there's rumors that say corey taylor cried his heart out after singing diluted. he really let all his emotions out on that song. by far the most intense song on the album besides scissors.
This is so awesome to see someone react to this for the first time, and actually appreciate it. This band was my childhood like when i was 9 till like 15 i was obsessed. Im a drummer, thanks to Joey (one of my main inspirations). His death impacted me rough. Their masks made them marketable. They were original. And 9 total band members was insane, the stage show was next level with bats being swung at beer kegs and everyone jumping and headbanging in unison. The energy was something the mainstream had never seen before. The Peak Mtv days. Cory (the vocalist) wrote a book about his life and thats where he revealed he was r*ped as a young boy, by an older neighborhood kid he thought was his friend. His lyrics and way he screams his music is like therapy for him. You can hear him break down and expose his tortured soul. Thats why so many people love Slipknot, this music saves peoples lives and lets them know theyre not the only “sic” ones suffering in the world. We’re all maggots. Family.

Such a landmark album...being a huge death metal fan and hearing this when it first hit in 1999 was indescribable. Reminded me of hearing Mr Bungle's self titled...groundbreaking. The percussive element really adds to their approach no doubt.
The first gig I ever went to was in March 2000, when I saw Slipknot supported by Kittie (you should certainly check out Spit). This self titled album holds up so well even 23 years later, but back then it utterly blew our minds. There was no real build up to the album it just came out of nowhere. Name a better first 5 songs on an album than this....I'll wait 😎 Still have the original 99 version upstairs, with Purity 🤘
Dude that woulda been sick. Charlotte is one of the heaviest songs of 99 I remember seeing that video of the Angel dude and the soft chorus part she sings was stuck in my head for like years after. Shits catchy as fuck. Spit was a gnarley album, Fallon was like 16 and had just started playing guitar a couple years earlier.
Producer Ross Robinson, famous for his career with KoRn, is known for extracting legendary studio performances. Ross did debut albums for KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Deftones, Soulfly & other great albums from Sepultura and Fear Factory.
The best album ever made, but you need to hear the version with Frail Limb Nursey and Purity. Purity is one of my favourite tracks ever, but Eyeless is probably the best Slipknot song for me. I'm glad you seemed to enjoy this record. It made such an impression on me that I still remember the date I bought it. Sept 6th 1999 was one of the best days in my life. At first, Me Inside was only available on the DigiPak as a bonus Track. Its a stunner. Eyeore was only on the Digipak as well. It's still weird to hear it in this order though as Liberate was always track 10 on the original. The effects are from Craig the Sampler, and Sid the DJ guy.

Ahh! Your channel just keeps making me realise how lucky I was to have all this music released when I was a teenager. This, Korn and SOAD got me through so much darkness and gave me a peer group where I felt accepted as myself. Lovely as always to see them being discovered afresh 20+ years later.
You were lucky to have these bands growing up! As cool as it is to be discovering them I can imagine they'd have an even bigger impact on growing up with them and following along with their progression as their albums were released. A lot of pop/electronic music actually, some rock too. The Killers (Day and Age/Hot Fuss) was certainly impactful in my early teen years. I'd say Crystal castles was another huge one for me. When I first heard their music it made me really start to think about what music could be. It sounded so chaotically beautiful, it just blew my mind. M83, Chvrches, Grimes, fka twigs, Bjork, there are a bunch more but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.
@@mollyesanborn interesting, I think my tastes mellowed with age while you seem to be going in the opposite direction! I haven't heard any of those except The Killers and Bjork. Hot Fuss is great album! I'd recommend 90s-2000s Muse if you haven't heard any of that.
Muse is great, I love a lot of the stuff they've put out. You're absolutely right about my music taste, it seems to be getting crazier and more extreme the older I get hehe!
Fun fact: Corey Taylor octave range is 5, which is super wide, making him the second widest vocalist in metal. Mike patton range is 6.5, which is a bit more wider, making him the first. It's amazing how Corey is influenced by Mike, and they both have amazing talent in their range of octaves.
Lol. Dani filth from Cradle of filth has a 5.6 range. His screams are vastly superior than Corey's. The widest range on earth is Tim Storms with a shattering 10 octave range.
Everyone in this band is a superstar musician, which is what blew me away about it the first time I heard them (which was this record, actually). Excited for you to hear more of them and potentially react to them for us to watch as well. For fun, watch some videos of them playing live. They’re truly a powerhouse live act, still to this day the best live band I’ve ever seen. I came home with a bloody eyebrow, covered in bruises, and loved every second.
yea molly, tis album was a definite game changer, i remember myself and 2 friends all were abroad in different countries when the album dropped and we all came back home with the cd. it was mindblowing.

Now, prepare yourself for one of the darkest albums ever recorded in this genre… their second album, IOWA. Recorded when the band basically hated everything including each other. Amazing how this album opened a door to a lot of people, even though i was born in 2003 the first three albums were still a huge part of me growing up. Sad to think that there ain't many new bands doing that for younger kids
We bought this, system of a down 1st album. Obsolete by Fear Factory, and Dark Side of the Spoon by Ministry on the same day. Of all the albums Dark Side has remained my fav for many years but at the time the Slipknot was the most impactful

I walked into this album completely blind and at the time it seemed like the most deranged and crazy thing I ever heard. Like a couple of serial killers recorded it in their creepy basement.
If you want to, You should listen to their second album, Iowa. Which is without a doubt their heaviest and most gruesome album they have made. Still is my absolute favorite album next to their third “Vol. 3 The subliminal verses”.
So this album and Iowa are probably the heaviest Nu Metal albums released. Iowa definitely has a lot more carnage, this one is much more hip hop influenced. There is a heavy amount of sampling in this album that many people might not catch on this album. I would say Shawn ‘Clown’ had a way bigger influence on the song writing of this album than any in their discography, and it makes it, in my opinion, their best one and most unique. I’m gonna look for the link that sort of points out all of the samples they used from movies and different songs, but it surprised me to say the least.

Yes IOWA is heavy, Vol 3 is pretty heavy but ya'll just can't stop comparing these albums with new songs. I personally think Slipknot is still pretty heavy. Ya'll just gonna ignore Solway Firth, all out life, Unsainted, The chapeltown Rag, Gematria? The chapeltown Rag is kinda hard to follow because of drums but if you listen to it few more times it will definetely grow on you. And it's just raw, Corey definetely got his mature iowa voice back.

This album is priceless, amazing stuff! I deffinitely enjoy it less now after all those years I heard it, but still hits hard as all hell, and the instrumental, with the hip-hop quality, industrial beats and experimental guitar screechings, is just mind-blowing still, i adore the manic aggression this record transmits, with sprinkles of melancholy and bloodlusted grieve. Eyeless is problably my favorite but when I was younger, Scissors completely anihilated me, I was soooo blown away by the sinister, psichotic sound. Might as well recomend one, so I think Undestroyed by Free Salamander Exhibit might be a really cool choice. Don't know if they ever released anything other than this one record but only that is already pretty nuts.
Yeah, there are some moments on this album where that really sinister tone shines which I love, Scissors is definitely one of those tracks that highlights it. I'll definitely check out your album suggestion, thanks :)

That album is really intense, with their second album-Iowa is really amazing as well. This band is a band I still need to hear live, you should listen to Puerto Rico band- Puya, their album Fundamental got them to play Ozzfest.
This was one of those albums I picked up without knowing anything about the band, but the album cover looked cool. It was just amazing and so different from everything else I had heard at that time, with the amazing mix of aggression, electronics and incredible drumming by the legendary Joey Jordison. Still one of my all time favorite metal albums to this day.
I love that about these videos and her general reactions that are always cute lol. From Deftones , S O A D , Korn (which I gotta watch) , Now skipknot .. Molly is our treasure for these🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
Great reaction and great thoughts! If you thought this one was intense though, they crank it up to 11 on their second album, which is much darker and heavier with better production. Arguably better than their first album and all of their subsequent material as well. Really recommend you react to that!
This was fun seeing your reaction to one of two of my first metal albums I picked up when I was 12-13 late 1999, I remember the album caught my eye coz there was a stand in the record store with tons of vinyl record versions of this album, and the cover with them all in masks grabbed my attention straight away. Later down the line I went to see them on their infamous Iowa tour (with American Head Charge opening), amazing concert. You should add 'War of Art' by American Head Charge to your list, it's awesome! They were set to be the next big band in that scene except they hit a ton of bad luck and self destruction by drug use. Still they left a masterpiece for us and we can be grateful for that, AHC was also great live on the Iowa tour.

@@mollyesanborn Yes it's sad to me how AHC have been forgotten, you won't regret adding 'War of Art' it's a great album that I still go back to every so often, like all masterpieces, they don't get old. On the second of my first two metal albums yeah I don't mind sharing :) the record store clerk whom saw I had the slipknot album to purchase said I should also checkout the band Fear Factory so I picked up a copy of Demanufacture, is it worth a listen? Yes I would say so, it's no 'Slipknot' self-titled debute, but few albums are in my opinion, but it's a landmark album of the 90's to many, my personal favourite album by Fear Factory would come out the same year I saw Slipknot live, Digimortal, a very cool album.
Slipknot early stuff was experimental before their first album; that album was a very experimental demo ; it was influenced by mr.bungle. Corey Taylor stated him seeing Mike patton perform a faith no more song on MTV is what inspired him to become a singer in his younger years. :3 You can research this if you don't believe me. ^-^

Although the band has three percussionists, probably about 95% of what you hear is the one and only Joey Jordison, the main drummer. He was absolutely incredible and in hindsight pretty much was the driving force behind the band's sound early on. He's the one that brings that 'machine gun' speed and intensity.

@@mollyesanborn Yeah the other two are known as 'custom percussionists' and use big drums that they stand behind. They're only really prominent in the mix on percussion-heavy tracks and stand out as having a deeper tone than the regular drum kit. They also use beer kegs for that metallic sound that you picked up on during your review. The additional percussion is really only used to accent the main drum kit or add an extra layer of depth and heaviness to certain sections of songs.

Rest in peace Joey and Paul. You've opened the door in to my favorite band for the last 20+ years. Corey Taylor (Vocalist) is incredibly talented, and this band knows how to produce killer album after album.
Their follow up album to this is a must. It's titled 'Iowa' and is highly regarded as their heaviest, darkest, most intense album by far, as they went through a really dark time between their self-titled album and the recording of the 'Iowa" follow-up. It was also a response to many labels wanting to sign them only if they went more "radio-friendly", they went to a dark place and did the opposite. A track on there called The Heretic Anthem is directly about doing that. It's definitely a must after now hearing their debut album.

This album is so unique that I'm pretty sure even Slipknot itself couldn't make something like that again. It's a portrait of an era.
Quite literally, they aren't allowed to use as much insane samples as they did for this album, and those are key of how sinister this album gets. And that's even without going for how both Paul and Joey played a big role at this album's sound, RIP both of them.
This album came out at just the right time for me. As an angry/moody 16 yr old that was progressively getting into heavier music, this was damn near peak. Saw them headline the second stage at Ozzfest 99, and was blown away by the intensity of both the show and the audience. Everything behind the first three layers of people at the stage felt like a giant mosh pit.
I was 16 in 99 as well and this beast blew me away. I saw them Feb 2000 the first time and it was like nothing else I had, or have ever seen.

SlipKnoT is nothing without Sid and Craig. The eerie sound effects and samples they provide are to notch. It creates a perfect atmosphere. (Not overlooking everyother's contribution).
i find Craig especially is overlooked, both do a great job but not many people ever talk about Craig

When Slipknot came on to the scene there was nothing like them or even close to the speed and savagery of their playing- kinda crazy to think of a band like this now days being as main stream as they were, you would see their shirts all over school Ok going to enjoy your video and then get myself ready to see Tool live in concert this week! If they are touring in your area I highly recommend everyone.

I think you are talking about more mainstream oriented/alternative metal subgenres? As the black metal/(brutal) death metal scense were already developed very wall and had a lot of bands which were much faster and more savage...
Anyway, Slipknot never was my cup of tea, but they've definetly had some "vision" and originality, which is hard to deny of crpse.
This is an older video but these dudes were absolutely insane when they came out. They were to my knowledge the first band like this to breakthrough the mainstream.

That "rhythmic pattern" in the background during Eyeless is a style of dance music called Jungle / Drum & Bass and that particular style of drum pattern is called an Amen Break. Anyway, I was just here for the reaction to Eyeless. Don't care for Slipknot, just love that little Drum & Bass intro. So B-Key was more of the Dark Side, Tech-Step stuff, but there's also Liquid DnB (really chill and lounge-y), Jump Up (2-step beat with high energy for dancing, but also quite goofy and corny sounding), Neurofunk (2-step beat, harsh synths - I personally find this style kind of boring), Intelligent DnB (evolving and progressive beats and sounds - usually minimalistic)

They're luckily one of those bands you don't have to worry about having a bad album. The sampling and turntable work on this album is monolithic, complements the tone of the songs so well, the whole concept of the record is about becoming insane in the real world, very cereblral subliminal record, loved your video and comments, very authentic and I loved that you paid attention althrough. suscribed!
I completely agree! Someone else in the comments posted a link to a video playing all of the samples that they used on this album, and there are so many I didn't even pick up on during my first listen through. It's really incredible how they incorporate all of those different sounds.

My first concert was "The pledge of allegiance tour" in 2001." Slipknot" "Rammstein" "SOAD" Mudvayne. Insane show!
Man I love the first two Slipknot albums. They are both really good. I always found it interesting how Slipknot where labeled as nu metal. Sure there are nu metal elements in the guitar tuning and some riffing, the hip hop elements and the use of turn tables, but there is also death metal and black metal riffing, drumming, and production and even some industrial elements. Makes for a unique eclectic mixture that I don't think has been perfectly replicated by any other band, though many have tried (the closest that comes to mind is the album Kostolom by Slaughter to Prevail).

Yeah, I found it really hard to pinpoint a specific genre for this album while listening to it. Definitely a lot of industrial elements I was picking up on, which I love. A great blend of sounds for sure. I'll have to check out Kostolom now and see what I think of that one.

@@mollyesanborn Yes ma'am. You really aren't missing much honestly. Slipknot self titled was truly a great album, but I think Slipknot really hit their stride, on "IOWA".
This album is one of the defining records that have changed my life (musically and literally). I was a introverted, quite teenager, sheltered from everything. English isn’t my first language so I didn’t pay to much attention to the lyrics but the energy and rawness captured me. Though this music I could express my feelings. It gave me energy out of nowwhere. I started dancing in my room. I felt understood. Before I discoverd Metal, I had mostly to radio music and hip-hop. So Nu-Metal (mix between Rap + Metal) was the next logical step because I was looking for harder, more intense music. Although this album is heavy af, it has a lot of clean elements in it and that is what made me fell in love with it. I need the mix between heavy and soft vocals. It made me feel alive and full of energy. It was later in life when I looked at the lyrics. The dark and personal lyrics fit the album very well. It might sound contradicting but the darkness on this album has helped me to keep the light in my life. For that I am forever thankful. Metal has made me a more calm and collected, more relaxed human being. Slipknot is a great part of my life.
Joey Jordison's impactful, precised, perfect sound with groove while playing fast, godlike, insane drumming skill is so underated. He inspired/influenced so many people too. He's our hero.

Their follow up album, Iowa is an absolute MUST! Most of their fans consider this album and ESPECIALLY Iowa as the gold standard for everything Slipknot. Iowa IMO is easily their most solid and bad ass album from start to finish. Everything after is hit or miss. Each album has some great tracks, but then there are some that are just... eh.

I haven't listened to this album in a while, but after this video I confirm it's just as I remembered, pure madness lol
It's interesting how you immediately noticed the amazing rhythm section: besides having a great drummer, the band has two additional percussionists which are usually overlooked, but they make a huge difference compared to any other band. Also, all the strange sounds you heard throughout the album that made the whole thing feel even more insane are thanks to the TWO DJs (yeah, there's nine guys on this record, it's crazy). And the voice...ooooh, the voice! There's nothing I could say about Corey Taylor that you didn't already say in the video: the guy is just an amazing singer, super talented! And if you enjoyed his clean vocals, wait until you hear Slipknot's third album: starting from that record, the band added A LOT of clean vocals, showcasing how great of a singer Corey is!
With that said, if you want more Slipknot I recommend going in cronological order, so the next one would be Iowa. I'd say it's even heavier than this one, even though it's not nearly as crazy: there's a more "methodical" violence in Iowa, it's heavy and menacing in a more rational and controlled way, if that makes sense ^^' see it like this: listening to the self titled is like watching Leatherface in action, while listening to Iowa is more like watching Michael Myers.

Yeah, this album was wild! So glad I finally checked out Slipknot's music.
I love the first few slipknot albums, you picked up on everything I noticed initially too! That dark, energetic, but also playful tone to their sound. It's really a direct expression of their personalities overall. They went through a lot of fucked up struggles at this time in their lives, but no matter how dark they got they always found ways to make it playful and light too. Kinda similar to how Jackass works actually. It's a way to watch what would normally be pretty fucked up to witness, and instead turn it into something accessible for all.
Also I'm glad you kept picking up on the percussion elements, because in early interviews they mentioned that was a main goal of theirs. To create this overwhelming percussive sound by using the 2 side percussion kits along with the drummer. Doesn't always come through in the mix, or even live, but when it does come to the front it's something special.
Also if you aren't yet aware, there's 9 members in Slipknot. All the sounds you hear are actually someone playing an instrument. Even the electronic and atmospheric samples. Lead vocals, 2 guitarists, bass, 2 percussionists, drummer, DJ, and sampler. So even live one member, Craig 133 Jones, plays a keyboard with a laptop to do all those atmospheric samples live. And Sid Wilson does all the DJ turntable record scratching live as well. It's impressive as hell to witness them all play together. Or even write cohesive sounding music with that many people lol.
I'm just glad I got to see them live with their original member lineup, RIP Paul and Joey, back in 2009 in San Jose CA. Was front row near the center, it was one of the greatest concerts I've been to, still to this day.
Anyways I love seeing people work their way into the heavy side of music and metal. There's so much to appreciate beyond the intensity and aggression, even in the more extreme end of the metal spectrum. I'm excited to see if you end up going down that path eventually and check out some of the current heavy bands out there. Like Slaughter to Prevail, Mental Cruelty (a personal favorite right now with their last album), Brand of Sacrifice, Shadow of Intent, Enterprise Earth, Archspire (incredible technical death metal band), and many others. But working your way up to those bands is a fun ride. It took me over a decade of listening to metal to get into that more extreme side and now it's just normal lol. I started with bands like In Flames, Skindred (super fun reggae rock band), All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Within The Ruins, Periphery, and a bunch of other hard rock, metalcore, and post hardcore bands before getting into deathcore and tech death, and prog genres. So yeah sorry for the ramblings, but hopefully you'll work your way to these bands one day, it's refreshing to see someone go and listen to albums front to back in one sitting. I think it gives a better perspective on a bands sound this way. Some of my favorite songs are usually not the singles or popular ones that have videos. There's always hidden gems inside each album. And in metal a lot of the time albums are produced so songs blend from one to the next, and are curated with an ebb and flow in mind. So the listener doesn't too worn out with 5 fast intense songs back to back without some break and variety change in between. You only really can pick up on that extra work by listening to the full album.

And a DJ too, now those sound effects make sense! And I totally understand the progression you're talking about in terms of listening to this music. Had I heard Slipknot for the first time just a year or so ago I'm not sure if I would have liked it... but it's almost like I've gradually been training my ears to start to appreciate the nuances of this style of music and now I'm addicted. I'm looking forward to continuing on to some of the more extreme bands you mention in your comment! :)

They truly came out swinging with all the rage of the universe with this album. It’s the soundtrack to my 11-13 year old self. I’m 34 now so it’s been a part of my life pretty much the entire time.
This album is an absolute masterpiece, I listen to this every time I start my workouts. It never gets old, and I am happy to see another person enjoying this album.

there's rumors that say corey taylor cried his heart out after singing diluted. he really let all his emotions out on that song. by far the most intense song on the album besides scissors.
This is so awesome to see someone react to this for the first time, and actually appreciate it. This band was my childhood like when i was 9 till like 15 i was obsessed. Im a drummer, thanks to Joey (one of my main inspirations). His death impacted me rough. Their masks made them marketable. They were original. And 9 total band members was insane, the stage show was next level with bats being swung at beer kegs and everyone jumping and headbanging in unison. The energy was something the mainstream had never seen before. The Peak Mtv days. Cory (the vocalist) wrote a book about his life and thats where he revealed he was r*ped as a young boy, by an older neighborhood kid he thought was his friend. His lyrics and way he screams his music is like therapy for him. You can hear him break down and expose his tortured soul. Thats why so many people love Slipknot, this music saves peoples lives and lets them know theyre not the only “sic” ones suffering in the world. We’re all maggots. Family.

Such a landmark album...being a huge death metal fan and hearing this when it first hit in 1999 was indescribable. Reminded me of hearing Mr Bungle's self titled...groundbreaking. The percussive element really adds to their approach no doubt.
The first gig I ever went to was in March 2000, when I saw Slipknot supported by Kittie (you should certainly check out Spit). This self titled album holds up so well even 23 years later, but back then it utterly blew our minds. There was no real build up to the album it just came out of nowhere. Name a better first 5 songs on an album than this....I'll wait 😎 Still have the original 99 version upstairs, with Purity 🤘
Kittie is my guilty pleasure - the first 4 albums or so are all pretty amazing - Until The End I think is a masterpiece

Dude that woulda been sick. Charlotte is one of the heaviest songs of 99 I remember seeing that video of the Angel dude and the soft chorus part she sings was stuck in my head for like years after. Shits catchy as fuck. Spit was a gnarley album, Fallon was like 16 and had just started playing guitar a couple years earlier.
At the time, this was the heaviest and nastiest music I ever heard and it blew my mind how raw and brutal and stylistically fresh it sounded
Producer Ross Robinson, famous for his career with KoRn, is known for extracting legendary studio performances. Ross did debut albums for KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Deftones, Soulfly & other great albums from Sepultura and Fear Factory.
The best album ever made, but you need to hear the version with Frail Limb Nursey and Purity. Purity is one of my favourite tracks ever, but Eyeless is probably the best Slipknot song for me. I'm glad you seemed to enjoy this record. It made such an impression on me that I still remember the date I bought it. Sept 6th 1999 was one of the best days in my life. At first, Me Inside was only available on the DigiPak as a bonus Track. Its a stunner. Eyeore was only on the Digipak as well. It's still weird to hear it in this order though as Liberate was always track 10 on the original. The effects are from Craig the Sampler, and Sid the DJ guy.

Ahh! Your channel just keeps making me realise how lucky I was to have all this music released when I was a teenager. This, Korn and SOAD got me through so much darkness and gave me a peer group where I felt accepted as myself. Lovely as always to see them being discovered afresh 20+ years later.
You were lucky to have these bands growing up! As cool as it is to be discovering them I can imagine they'd have an even bigger impact on growing up with them and following along with their progression as their albums were released. Glad you're enjoying these videos though, I'm loving these awesome band discoveries!
@@mollyesanborn yeah definitely. I think the music I surrounded myself with as a teenager changed who I am, altered my outlook on the world and gave me a little place where I belonged! I'm sure there are bands throughout time that have had the same impact on people but for me it was these guys.

A lot of pop/electronic music actually, some rock too. The Killers (Day and Age/Hot Fuss) was certainly impactful in my early teen years. I'd say Crystal castles was another huge one for me. When I first heard their music it made me really start to think about what music could be. It sounded so chaotically beautiful, it just blew my mind. M83, Chvrches, Grimes, fka twigs, Bjork, there are a bunch more but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.
@@mollyesanborn interesting, I think my tastes mellowed with age while you seem to be going in the opposite direction! I haven't heard any of those except The Killers and Bjork. Hot Fuss is great album! I'd recommend 90s-2000s Muse if you haven't heard any of that.
Muse is great, I love a lot of the stuff they've put out. You're absolutely right about my music taste, it seems to be getting crazier and more extreme the older I get hehe!
Fun fact: Corey Taylor octave range is 5, which is super wide, making him the second widest vocalist in metal. Mike patton range is 6.5, which is a bit more wider, making him the first. It's amazing how Corey is influenced by Mike, and they both have amazing talent in their range of octaves.

Everyone in this band is a superstar musician, which is what blew me away about it the first time I heard them (which was this record, actually). Excited for you to hear more of them and potentially react to them for us to watch as well.
For fun, watch some videos of them playing live. They’re truly a powerhouse live act, still to this day the best live band I’ve ever seen. I came home with a bloody eyebrow, covered in bruises, and loved every second.

yea molly, tis album was a definite game changer, i remember myself and 2 friends all were abroad in different countries when the album dropped and we all came back home with the cd. it was mindblowing.

Now, prepare yourself for one of the darkest albums ever recorded in this genre… their second album, IOWA. Recorded when the band basically hated everything including each other. Every one of them had something horrible going on in each of their lives and it definitely shows. I can’t wait to see your reaction to it!

Amazing how this album opened a door to a lot of people, even though i was born in 2003 the first three albums were still a huge part of me growing up. Sad to think that there ain't many new bands doing that for younger kids

I have listened to this album many times and never get tired of it, the fusion of genres is what makes it so unique. My favorite album of the band.
We bought this, system of a down 1st album. Obsolete by Fear Factory, and Dark Side of the Spoon by Ministry on the same day. Of all the albums Dark Side has remained my fav for many years but at the time the Slipknot was the most impactful

I walked into this album completely blind and at the time it seemed like the most deranged and crazy thing I ever heard. Like a couple of serial killers recorded it in their creepy basement.
If you want to, You should listen to their second album, Iowa. Which is without a doubt their heaviest and most gruesome album they have made. Still is my absolute favorite album next to their third “Vol. 3 The subliminal verses”.
Definitely planning on reactions to Iowa and Vol. 3. Can't wait to hear more from Slipknot!
So this album and Iowa are probably the heaviest Nu Metal albums released. Iowa definitely has a lot more carnage, this one is much more hip hop influenced. There is a heavy amount of sampling in this album that many people might not catch on this album. I would say Shawn ‘Clown’ had a way bigger influence on the song writing of this album than any in their discography, and it makes it, in my opinion, their best one and most unique. I’m gonna look for the link that sort of points out all of the samples they used from movies and different songs, but it surprised me to say the least.

Yes IOWA is heavy, Vol 3 is pretty heavy but ya'll just can't stop comparing these albums with new songs. I personally think Slipknot is still pretty heavy. Ya'll just gonna ignore Solway Firth, all out life, Unsainted, The chapeltown Rag, Gematria? The chapeltown Rag is kinda hard to follow because of drums but if you listen to it few more times it will definetely grow on you. And it's just raw, Corey definetely got his mature iowa voice back.
I used to play this Album before I enter school, just makes you pump that blood so you can be ready for a whole day of school.

This album is priceless, amazing stuff! I deffinitely enjoy it less now after all those years I heard it, but still hits hard as all hell, and the instrumental, with the hip-hop quality, industrial beats and experimental guitar screechings, is just mind-blowing still, i adore the manic aggression this record transmits, with sprinkles of melancholy and bloodlusted grieve. Eyeless is problably my favorite but when I was younger, Scissors completely anihilated me, I was soooo blown away by the sinister, psichotic sound.
Might as well recomend one, so I think Undestroyed by Free Salamander Exhibit might be a really cool choice. Don't know if they ever released anything other than this one record but only that is already pretty nuts.
Yeah, there are some moments on this album where that really sinister tone shines which I love, Scissors is definitely one of those tracks that highlights it. I'll definitely check out your album suggestion, thanks :)

That album is really intense, with their second album-Iowa is really amazing as well. This band is a band I still need to hear live, you should listen to Puerto Rico band- Puya, their album Fundamental got them to play Ozzfest.

This was one of those albums I picked up without knowing anything about the band, but the album cover looked cool. It was just amazing and so different from everything else I had heard at that time, with the amazing mix of aggression, electronics and incredible drumming by the legendary Joey Jordison. Still one of my all time favorite metal albums to this day.

Great reaction and great thoughts! If you thought this one was intense though, they crank it up to 11 on their second album, which is much darker and heavier with better production. Arguably better than their first album and all of their subsequent material as well. Really recommend you react to that!

This was fun seeing your reaction to one of two of my first metal albums I picked up when I was 12-13 late 1999, I remember the album caught my eye coz there was a stand in the record store with tons of vinyl record versions of this album, and the cover with them all in masks grabbed my attention straight away. Later down the line I went to see them on their infamous Iowa tour (with American Head Charge opening), amazing concert. You should add 'War of Art' by American Head Charge to your list, it's awesome! They were set to be the next big band in that scene except they hit a ton of bad luck and self destruction by drug use. Still they left a masterpiece for us and we can be grateful for that, AHC was also great live on the Iowa tour.

On the second of my first two metal albums yeah I don't mind sharing :) the record store clerk whom saw I had the slipknot album to purchase said I should also checkout the band Fear Factory so I picked up a copy of Demanufacture, is it worth a listen? Yes I would say so, it's no 'Slipknot' self-titled debute, but few albums are in my opinion, but it's a landmark album of the 90's to many, my personal favourite album by Fear Factory would come out the same year I saw Slipknot live, Digimortal, a very cool album.

Slipknot early stuff was experimental before their first album; that album was a very experimental demo ; it was influenced by mr.bungle. Corey Taylor stated him seeing Mike patton perform a faith no more song on MTV is what inspired him to become a singer in his younger years. :3 You can research this if you don't believe me. ^-^
