Love this reaction. Great job as usual. So the story behind 515, the album opener. Right when the band went into the studio to start recording the album, their DJ, Sid Wilson's grandfather passed away. So he made the music of the track and they gave him a microphone and he just let out all his emotions. That's the screaming you hear.
Pretty crazy, that's some raw emotion for sure. It sets a great tone for the whole album though, they just pour every ounce of their feelings onto Iowa.
@@mollyesanborn they messed with the sound a lot though. i either heard from sid or the producer ross robinson that if they left it completely raw and didn’t add anything to it then it would have been way too disturbing and upsetting for the album
This album is rage and pain personified. Theres something about Corey's voice that just captures the sound of someone pushed to the brink, and then a little further. And the way they keep in coreys wheezing and manic laugher just adds to the ambiance. And instrumentally hits just as hard. Not a lot of albums can make you FEEL the emotions of the band, like, the vocals for '515' belong to the bands DJ, Sid Wilson, after his grandfather died. So they put him in a booth to let it out and he just screamed "death" over and over again. IOWA is a monument to catharsis.
The line that says it best to me is "somewhere between screaming and crying". They express that feeling of overwhelming sadness and rage better than anyone else I've ever heard. It's why I'll never stop listening to Slipknot. I can't.
These Slipknot albums are so engrained into my brain, it's hard to imagine someone never hearing them before and not knowing every note and minor vocal change I wish I could listen to them for the first time again 😭😭
@@deadspeak1126 bro same. I always remember standing on the sofa pretending to be Clown standing on his drums and shouting 666 on Heretic and my grandma being scared af losing her shit. Fun times
Yeah man its like what? You never heard Iowa? This is like those albums that you need to experience one time in your life specially if you are in tune emotionaly with the song meanings. I also too wish I could forget and listen to this all over again
Lol take a light dose of magic mushrooms and then listen to it. I actually did this about a year ago, and listened to a lot of slipknot's earlier stuff, and it was legitimately akin to hearing it anew, while having full knowledge of the track, it was fantastic.
@@wolfinthesno yeaaahhhhh I think I'll just stick to finding quality music that's new to me. No shortage of it, although Slipknot does carry a certain nostalgia since the first album I ever listened to in full was Slipknot's S/T
On 515 the screams and cries are from the DJ Sid Wilson when he got the news that his grandfather had just passed away and he could not be there cause they were recording the album, he was secretely recorded by sampler/keyboardist Craig Jones.
This album and Korn’s Self Titled album probably are two of the most influential metal albums to come out of the genre. The impact these two albums had on metal were insane. This album was hell to make for the band: 505 is a recording of one of the band members had a mental breakdown. The closer to Iowa, Corey Taylor recorded his vocals, drunk, naked and cutting himself with glass. If you like this, you’ll love Suicide Silence’s ‘The Black Crown’. The Deathcore scene has some incredible talent and energy to it
Yes indeed ! In a second plane, I'd say the same about Coal Chamber's S/T and Mudvayne's LD50. Iowa has got to be the angriest album ever recorded; it's like a shot of adrenaline.
@@CoachJasonCurtis this is definitely death metal influenced nu metal out there. If it wasn’t for this album, we probably wouldn’t have gotten a Deathcore scene (suicide silence, bring me the horizons first album, Slaughter to prevail, Lorna shore) maybe even most Metalcore bands wouldn’t even sound close to the same.
I always here Cory's story a bit differently usually I hear it's either a broken bottle, or a broken candle stick, either way I'm surprised I had to read this far to see this story come up as it is a huge part of the sound to the album, and gives you a much deeper understanding of how or why those screams, and laughs sounded like someone who was on the brink. Honestly Its absolutely incredible that they were able to channel this level of pain in any constructive way.
A musical genre doesn't need to feature any death metal elements to sound heavier. As a matter of fact there aren't any death metal elements on Korn's and just hints of it in JJ's drumming. Also melodic death metal can be pretty tame compared to fierce nu metal.
Just some context, in case no one else has said it yet; The Heretic Anthem was written after an incident toward the end of the band's tour cycle for their first album. A man, as Corey described him, wearing a suit and looking like an official from a record company, approached Corey at the end of a show and basically said that if they could write an entire album of "Wait and Bleeds," the band would become huge. Corey had some very not-nice words for the man and went on to write The Heretic Anthem. The song is a huge double-fisted middle finger to the music industry. "If you're 555 then I'm 666" means that if you (the music industry) want me to be one way, I'm going in the completely opposite direction, because we (Slipknot) do what we want, not what you say. If you look back at the lyrics, it's full of references to how they want to be and how they want their music to be, versus how lots of other bands are. Iowa (the song) is another interesting one with some strange facts. Corey has said, and I'm paraphrasing, that Iowa, "is about taking a corpse and doing very fucked up things to it." The producer told Corey to go to a place in his mind he had never been to before, and Corey went there. He did the vocals for the entire song in two takes, and actually stripped naked, broke every piece of glass he could find in the booth, and started cutting himself as he was doing the vocals. He says if you listen to the background noises, you can hear him screaming with every cut, and vomiting from the pain and shock. He definitely went the extra mile for that song. Anyway, I just wanted to give you some context of some songs you had questions about. I hope this helped!!
Thank you for the detailed explanations on these tracks, it's much appreciated. That's absolutely crazy about Iowa, talk about committing to the music!
Thats pretty interesting but also a tad bit corny to be honest. I feel like the younger version of me would be impressed but as a 34 year old it almost seems a bit try hard. The producer was Ross Robinson for the first album and Iowa I believe. He was known to make people go to dark places. Personally, I think Slipknot purposely tried to go to these lengths to appease their fans, but came off a bit try hard for me. Don’t get me wrong, Iowa is incredibly visceral if not intentionally disturbing. But metal fans can sometimes be too simple for me…heavier=better. I just don’t see it that way personally. Heaviness and noise does not equal dark or intense. That being said Iowa is iconic and absolutely an experience
This is one of my favorite Slipknot albums. I guarantee you will enjoy .5 The Gray Chapter and Vol. 3. Also Untitled and See You On The Other Side by Korn.
@@kornknot2726 Those are bad ass songs, I loved Killpop too. There's just alot of extra parts mixed in that I feel threw the album off as a whole. It is great in segments though.
The turntables on this record have a couple really interesting samples that were scratched and layed, a lot of them being these metallic cages rattling and female vocal screams and shrills that are scratched in those sections with that wirling vibrato to them, sid is a brilliant turntablist and really allows the instrument to stand on its own in the sense of darker and heavy music as a whole.
Sid is brilliant on Iowa, as well as their self titled. I've never heard turntables used to create such a dark sound, they blend right into the aggressive, heavy instrumentals so well.
@@mollyesanborn as a turntablist in the metal scene, I really look up to him. Frank from deftones is great too but he only really scratched on their first 4 records before mainly switching over to synths.
@IceCat7 Joe Hahn was the turntablist I grew up listening to, he has this rest nice mix of 2000s electro samples, scratching and vocal samples that are also used for scratching that work really well in Linkin parks more clear cut nu metal records. After those first couple records however, I believe he mainly switched to playing synths and only really scratched on occasion.
Fact about this record: Corey during the title track “Iowa” cut himself with shards of glass in the vocal booth to give the most authentic screams. In the opening “515” intro, the “DEATH” screaming is DJ Sid screaming and crying because his grandfather just died. Absolutely authentic.
Heya Molly. I was waiting very patiently for this one lol. The first track 515 has a very sad story behind it. Sid, who does the turntables for Slipknot had just(literally got the phone call) lost his grandfather of whom he was very very close with. When he entered the studio he was gutted and music being his outlet he got on the mic. He just let it all pour our screaming and crying one word multiple times. Death. It was never supposed to be on the album but it got mixed and some of the screams reversed to just make it sound crazy. Supposedly the original uncut is way to hard to handle. Thanks for these listens and reactions. They are great!
Thanks for the backstory on 515, that's pretty crazy! It just really impressed me how much emotion they poured into this entire project, and 515 as the opener sets things up so well. Just a track of agony, pure pain.
@@mollyesanborn Can you react to "Darkthrone a blaze in the northern sky" full album, it's one of the pioneers of black metal. You got a new subscriber here 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Oh wow, thank you!! I really appreciate that. Glad to hear that the authenticity is coming through in the videos, that's all I ever want this channel to be. Just a great space for music lovers. Never in it for money/subs/views, just the joy of music ❤️
Great reaction, you have a very calming demeanor, it's refreshing! First time watching you reaction. Your vocabulary was very nice and kept me interested! Definitely gonna check out more of your videos! Keep it up! Have a great one.
FINALLY!!!!! I've listened to this album like 5 times a year since it came out and it never gets old. Everything Ends isn't just my favorite Slipknot song but a top 5 of my favorite metal songs of all time. Left Behind and My Plague are absolute bangers as well. Again, props to producer Ross Robinson, guitarists Mick Thompson and Jim Root came into their own on each track, and as always shout out to bassist Paul Grey (R.I.P.) and drummer Joey Jordison for writing a majority of the music. Loved your reactions to this sooo much. Can't wait for you to hear Vol. 3 (aka mature Slipknot). Keep up the great work Molly!
This album meant so much to me as a kid. You can feel the sincerity from everyone on it, especially Joey. So happy to hear you also get chills listening to it.
love watching you hear this for the first time! on my first listen i had to pull over on the side of the highway lol was numb from head to toe;) goosebumps means the magic is working this is definately music to use to your advantage well done!
I'm older, in my 30's. Slipknot was my gateway into exploration I feel like...both myself, society, art. I was only in 6th grade when I heard the original Self-Titled album. I loved how raw and aggressive they were. This album came out when I was in 8th grade and I was already by that time very obsessed with them. As far as I can remember the only band I ever obsessed over. When I was at home I was likely listening to them or exploring, now dead and gone, forums about them. They were such a mystery to us all back then. This was when their faces didn't really surface much and people were mostly guessing who was who based on the few candid images of them floating around. Then all that mystery started going away after this album, when they took a break from eachother. 'Iowa' was an exhausting album for them and from what I understood they didn't exactly all get along that well during it. Then they started working more on other projects like Stone Sour or Murderdolls. Showing their faces more through those projects.
Fantastic reaction!! Definitely my favorite so far! Now on to Vol. 3 the subliminal verses. Which is a completely different album from the last two. Corey changes his vocal style, the production is different, and there are even acoustic tracks on it. Make sure you react to the extended version with the tracks “don’t get close” and “scream”.
I've probably watched Heretic Anthem on Conan about 500 times, it's just so brutal even without the extra percussion. I love the guitars on this album so much.
Love seeing someone experience my favorite album for the first time, which I wish I could. Fun fact you can't really see with modern music distribution: The liner notes that have the lyrics contain lyrics for every song EXCEPT Iowa. Iowa is physically on the disc itself. 515 is also the area code for Des Moines. They did the entire album live in 2016 at Knotfest and it was the most surreal experience seeing Iowa in its entirety in a live setting. Love these reactions!
This is not an album. This is a lifestyle. This is a message. This is a statement. This is a piece of art. This is everlasting and legendary. This is a womb to a brand new generation.
You should listen to Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory and Meteora. They're the best albums they've made and produced. I recommend it! Even Reanimation as well or even all their albums! They're masterpieces in my opinion.
Have to agree with the 'all albums' part. A Thousand Suns in particular is an overlooked masterpiece. And The Hunting Party is such a well thought out and well crafted experience. But hell, they're all worth a listen for real.
"Iowa" is my favourite Slipknot. You're always killing it with these reactions. It'd be awesome to see you dig into Pantera's 90s albums, a band that influenced a lot of the nu-metal and 2000s bands, and were just legends in their time.
One of the darkest, most viscerally heavy albums I grew up with. Got into Slipknot when they dropped their first album, and while their first will always be my favourite for nostalgia reasons, this album is right up there too. Pure, raw, dark emotion from the band on this one. IMO they've yet to come close to this and their first album since, though I still love all their music.
I listen to this álbum since i was 15, im 34 now and i still enjoy it so much...im glad that people Still find and enjoy this masterpieces...thank you for what youre doing, great great reaction. I hope you complete your Slipknot Journey , in my opinion Iowa is the best of them but there are amazing albums they made after that one and i hope you react to them. Greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you for watching! This album is indeed a masterpiece, I'm so glad I finally have listened to it. I'm certainly planning on doing the rest of Slipknot's discography in future videos, they're quickly becoming a favorite band for me!
There are few bands in this world who leave it all on the table like slipknot! They are completely honest with themselves and with their fans and hold nothing back! Every album every track every live show they leave it all on the table and regret nothing I love it!!! Great reaction can’t wait to see more.
Someone else already said this, just backing them up, you should react to Linkin Park's first two albums, Hybrid Theory and Meteora. Two of the best Metal/Rock/Alternative albums ever made. Great video btw.
Man, I am so excited for Vol. 3, but I am so glad you listened to this album, it is definitely a must for any heavy metal fan. My favorite on this album would probably be People= Shit, Gently, Left Behind, and New Abortion.
hope you react to vol 3 soon! the first two are easily my favorites but it will be interesting for you to see how slipknot changed their sound from iowa to vol 3 also the backup vocalists throughout the album are the two percussionists Chris (guy with long nose mask) and Clown
Such a dark album, when recording iowa, the screaming in 515 is sid wilson because i think his mom died, correct me if im wrong. The band members were on all sorts of drugs at the time and they would huff a dead crow in a jar before they went on stage. Theres alot more background to this album that makes it darker.
It truly is a fantastic record. I'm so excited to see your take on Vol 3 now. Such a drastic turn that showed people they couldn't be held down. Also, just saw these guys live after two decades of being in love with them and it was every bit the experience it was built up to be! Highly recommend checking em out if they come near your city. Corey makes the crowd feel so special ☺️
With 515, the screaming is actually Sid Wilson who came in the day after his grandmother passed, he told them to just put on something and he needed to yell. They thought that it worked fine as its own separate track and put it on the album as a tribute to Sid's grandma.
So after Slipknots first album some label types told them that they should make an album full of Wait and Bleed type songs to get more raido play and to lean more into a catchier sound so instead Slipknot made Iowa as a big F U to the industry. Also the beginning screams are Sid Wilson (their DJ). He had just learned his grandfather had passed not too long before so he went into the vocal booth and just let out his anger and dismay. Also the members were probably at one of their lowest points on a personal level and towards each other because of various factors like drug and alcohol abuse and their disillusionment of the record industry as well as dealing with mental health issues and fame. Its why the album is so dark. I truly love this album. There's technically heavier music and vocals out there from other bands but to me none of those other bands have captured the frenetic anxiety and despair that Slipknot created here. The way Corey seems like he's fighting to keep up with the music in such a manic way. He sounds like he's genuinely in pain and in another space in his mind. To me this album is the heaviest album ever made. Just from the emotions it pulls out of me. No other band has done that to this degree for me. Great reaction! I'd been waiting to see it! Can't wait to see you react to the next album!!!
Dynamite reaction and review! I really enjoy your insight and choice of words…you’re giving proper attention to the whole of the song, including the production…that’s both rare and rad!👍😎
Great reaction! Easily one of the darkest albums ever made, but also arguably one of the greatest imo. From beginning to end, this album never lets up. From Sid’s distorted and quite horrific screams in 515, to the very end with Iowa, which has to be one of the darkest and most disturbing songs ever written, in both lyrics and tone. For those who don’t know, Iowa’s lyrics are about a guy who kills a girl and then falls in love with her corpse, and also does some not so very nice things to it… that song is so disturbing, yet manages to be so incredible. The slow melodic bass tone that carries you through the whole song, which is intercut with the screams and moans of Corey as when he was recording this, he was naked, drunk, and cutting himself with shards of glass. It’s a horrific, yet also beautiful album at the same time, and I think it’s an essential album that every metal head should listen to at some point.
I love your curiosity. Thanks for sharing your journey. Slipknot’s music is not for everyone but this album just came at the right time into my life. I love the stark contrast to everything that represents «Mainstream». This album makes me feel alive and sane by releasing all the tension from my body when listening to it. (Too much sh*t is going on in the world.) You would think that music like this grows darkness inside but in reality it creates more light (at least that is how I feel). «My Plague» (my top 3 Slipknot) and «Everything Ends» flow so well together.
I listened to these type of aggressive and very manic songs sooo much some years ago, it gives me so much nostalgia even if it hasn't passed that much time, and this album is one of the only ones I still enjoy after my angst teenager years. It's insanely well put together, with extreme agression and explosion, but full of creepy tension and darkness beneath the surface, while always noticeable. I looove this album to death, honestly the best of Slipknot by my standards.
I think you'll enjoy the .5 The Gray Chapter, it's problably the most atmospheric album they have put out, and the later We Are Not Your Kind, which is insanely good, with lots of eletronic influences and more eclectic parts, it's a more expansive and varied sound for sure. Also also, if it isn't asking too much, I'd like to recommend the Circa Survive stuff if you're not familiar, specially The Amulet. If you already know their music so that's amazing.
I came across "Iowa" at a really difficult time in my life. I remember feeling really disturbed and almost frightened to listen to it at some points. In fact, I don't I've sat down and listened to it all the way through. Your review has helped me see how dynamic of an album it is. There's a lot of standouts on "Iowa," personally, "My Plague," (It was featured on the 'Resident Evil' movie soundtrack), "Left Behind," "I Am Hated," and I remember liking "Metabolic" a lot, too. I've always admired Slipknot for the way they infuse all of their various elements into one unique sound. My personal favorite member is Craig...the sample guy with giant nails coming out of his head! Haha... Cool review, Molly! Looking forward to the next one!
This album is a ride to hell without skin on your bones and you're strapped to a table going through flames. The essential Slipknot. Joey is out of this world. Iowa is just...so good. The musicianship is insane and the people doubting that they're just another gimmick band without any art to their music, is judging them wrong. Put this album on and take it in. Definitely the most brutal album they ever made and still has a clean production. Saw them live twice in 2019 for the We Are Not Your Kind Tour and the songs they played off Iowa were amazing.
Undeniably a great album. I've always thought it was front loaded but looking at the track list I don't know what I'm talking about. I definitely find the closing title track a little boring, and it doesn't always match the intensity of the debut (down to the slightly more refined production and more song variety), so my favourite between the first two oscillates a lot. The point you made about how the arrangements of the songs flow well is spot on, thanks for that revelation. I'll probably give it to Iowa for the catchier choruses too. For now. I love most of 'knot's stuff, four and be half of their records are fantastic. I think from a songwriting standpoint Vol. 3 would be my fav out of all of them, i love how weird they get with the noises on We Are Not Your Kind too. I struggle to pick between my Slipknot children, so why bother trying? Another great vid Molly, kudos.
Yeah, there is a great flow across Iowa, they just make the tracks super cohesive. I love too how some tracks have that pulled in, quiet sinister tone and others bring the aggression from start to finish but it all works together on the album. Iowa (the last track) is definitely the most toned down, it almost acts as the final demise or the death of the album, a really bleak closing note.
@@mollyesanborn I feel like I should like it more, I'm really into drone for the most part, I think just because the song before it isn't really an ending, it makes the album sputter out more than end (that sounds harsh but when you hear Vol. 3 and its excellent closer hopefully you'll understand what I mean)
i always loved that iowa song the most, it somehow speaks to me, but i was always into progressive metal and stuff like that, used to slow building music. that whole album manages not to explain emotions to you with your reasoning, it makes you feel them. Iowa (the Song) lets you drop into the Pool of your own Emotions if you manage to let go
this is simply amazing, Molly... purely brutal but still a game changer and very authentic at the time as a big fan of their whole discography, this is by far my favorite
Kickass album. Love your reactions! Glad to see you react to it and enjoy it so much! Fun fact, Slipknot members admit that this album was the gnarliest process they ever went through and will never relive. Their debut album rocketed them into success so suddenly that other bands moved them into headlining gigs because they couldn’t follow up a powerhouse live act like Slipknot. Due to not being ready for their success the members all slipped into drug use, alcoholism, mental health crisis, violence, etc, and those negative aspects are what fueled the making of this record. It’s why it’s so brutal. Can’t wait for you to get into the 3rd record, Volume 3!
This is with no doubt my favorite Slipknot album of all time. And an awesome review as always! You should dive into marilyn manson, the way they play with the sound and the vocals is something else as well. All albums are interestingly bizarre but in a good way. Hollywood is one of the best.
Thanks for watching! I've heard a few tracks from Marilyn Manson but have never really given his full albums a listen. I'll have to check out more of his music!
Like I said on the static-X video I just got here, and your already onto Iowa! Your unstoppable Molly!, just like this album. The authenticity, power, and groove of Iowa's lyrics, vocals, guitars, percussions and samples all blend to be the peak of Metal for this era. To me, its the one Album to rule them all.
Ohhh yea! You're finally checking out IOWA! Loved this album! Fun fact: during the recording of the song Iowa, Corey would cut himself with broken glass. I forgot the reasoning as to why i got a feeling it was either to emote pain through his growls and screams or to enhance it. Crazy visual but makes sense when you read about the personal issues all the members were going through at the time and the high tensions they had towards each other. They were not in the right state mind.
Wow, that's pretty intense. Makes me wonder about that ambient glass breaking sound at the end of the heretic anthem. I wonder if that's the glass he used later on during Iowa.
This was the first Slipknot album I listened to, and actually one of the first metal albums I really got into. Slipknot has been one of my favorites for around 5 years now, I love every song they've ever made 🤘🤘 can't wait for their new album
Still such an impeccable record! Im loving your reactions and can't wait for you to react to the rest of their discography! Also as part of that, you should listen to their demo album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. It's quite different than what they would become, and even had a different singer at the time. I'd love your reaction to it!
Glad you're enjoying the Slipknot reactions! I'll definitely think about doing a video for Mate Feed Kill Repeat too, I'd be really intrigued to hear Slipknot before Corey was the lead vocalist. I also really want to hear the original version of Gently too...
I bought this CD in high school along with Marilyn Manson's 'Holy Wood' album at a record store in Sacramento while I was hanging out with my friend and had to hide them from my parents when I got home, haha. In my opinion (and many others' opinion), this is Slipknot's best album, even though their first probably had a bigger impact on the NuMetal scene. Can't wait to see your reaction to Korn's 'Issues' album. Just like Iowa is a step forward for Slipknot, Issues is a step forward for Korn. Also, don't forget about Soulfly 😉 Keep up the good work Molly! ☺️
Yeah, Iowa is definitely a great progression for Slipknot. I loved hearing them lean into their darker, heavier side on this one. I'll definitely keep Soulfly in mind, and I've got Issues coming next! :D
This album is so special and what turned me on to the band. My older brother had picked me up from my dad's work to grab lunch and he hands me this cd (ripped and burned onto a blank disk, those were the days) and just casually said "this will fuck your shit up". I was hooked ever since.
Probably, maybe, possibly.. the best album to come out of the Nu-metal aggro genre. It felt genuine at the time, not over stylized or definitely not commercial friendly. It still sounds great but once you get past the rage of youth lyrics.. there ain't a ton of substance. But I think that's okay because of the technicial quality of the band at this point and how well they put the album together. It sounded bigger, faster, harder than their contemporaries and the actual song composition definitely sounded more complex and unique. Awesome reaction, it's really cool to follow along as you go through this now 20 year old music!? Wtf happened to the time? I'd be curious if you're familiar with Cold. I think they're a bit of an underappreciated gem of the era, their first album especially where their sound is a bit less constrained and influenced by what was popular at the time. But honestly Cold's first three album are all solid examples of quality song writing. Seems like Staind was received far more favorably, with good reason, still I think Cold is a really solid alternative within the genre you may enjoy if you haven't experienced their music ✌️
Yeah, for sure Iowa is an extremely well put together album. It sounds so great, the production is A plus. I'd argue it has quite a bit of substance though, on an emotional level. Looking past the lyrics and just taking into account the tremendous amount of emotion they deliver through the instrumentals and sounds on this album is so impressive to me. And thanks for the band recommendation, I am not familiar with Cold's music but a few others have suggested them to me as well. I'll check them out :)
This is one of my favorite metal albums ever! Almost every track is a banger and it also includes possibly my all time favorite Slipknot song with Disasterpiece and also two other songs that I love so very much (Metabolic and Gently). Not to mention one of the most fascinating songs I've ever listened to in Iowa (song), not just musically, but the backstory is haunting. I would recommend that if you do listen to all their albums, you listen to them in release order to really see how much they've changed over the years. Also, Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses is VERY different than the first two, and I really love it! I'm really liking these analyses and reviews so far; keep it up!
Yeah, I'm planning on doing the rest of Slipknot's albums in release order so I can really hear their progression and change in style over the course of their discography. People keep saying Vol. 3 is very different, I'm looking forward to hearing it!
@@mollyesanborn Vol 3 is way better better than Iowa which never really gelled with me, but I dunno. People like Iwoa so whatever (maybe I'm wrong). Looking forward to the Vol 3 review.
loved the video! the next slipknot album is not as heavy but slaps just as hard as the sound is taken in a new direction. i also recommend linkin parks hybrid theory, its amazing how electronic and metal mixes on that album
I had just gotten out of my first boarding school and in Chicago O’Hare a spent my food money buying Iowa at a record store. I went through like 4 sets of batteries in about 8 hours. Full volume from the time it opened til I landed in San Francisco. People forget it now.. but when this came out it wasn’t like now where you could just go online and find a thousand similar bands. You had to just sit and wait til an album dropped then go physically buy it lol. The Heretic Anthem still give me goosebumps and spine shivers. It’s so exciting watching you hear all the music we grew up with and dig it Molly! You’re channel is wholesome and real.. there’s no image. Just you and us and some music.. how neat!
I know, there's a part of me that kind of wishes we still had record stores and the anticipation of waiting in line to buy an album. Although like you said its also cool that nowadays we have way more access to new bands and can easily hear a wider variety of music. I'm not sure which I prefer... And thanks for the kind words on the channel, it always makes me happy knowing that my curiosity and love for music is translating to all of the viewers. ❤️
This is an awesome review! I love your attention to detail and very thoughtful feedback, it shows that you love and understand music a lot. I would really highly recommend you check out some "from mars to sirius" by gojira, that is a good introduction to them, one of my most sonically deep and immersive bands ive ever heard, their music really takes you to another planet. And for a more "underground" release, I would highly recommend "epitaphs" by obscure sphinx, the atmosphere of that album is incredibly unique, a very isolated and mournful sound, but somehow comforting.
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you're enjoying the channel. I've actually heard Gojira, I did a discography ranking for them awhile back on my channel if you're interested. I'll have to check out Obscure Sphinx though, never heard of them before. Thanks for the recommendation :)
Great reaction Molly! This will show my age a bit, first time I saw Slipknot was at Ozzfest when this album dropped. Riding their hydraulic barrels, shit was nuts. Next album up is my personal favorite, Subliminal Verses! Also anyone else notice Molly's starting to make the stink face y'all! 🤘
Skin Ticket has always been my favorite Slipknot song and I’ve never been able to relay to others why. It just seethes from front to back and has such a weight to it.

Very well said. They squeezed every drop of emotion and pain onto Iowa and it made for an incredible album.
The line that says it best to me is "somewhere between screaming and crying". They express that feeling of overwhelming sadness and rage better than anyone else I've ever heard. It's why I'll never stop listening to Slipknot. I can't.
Fun fact corey actually cut the inside of his asshole to channel anger and pain (literally) bro it paid off
I've always felt this is Slipknot's best album. It's just so raw and emotional. I think the loud and crunchy mixing does a lot to accentuate it.
Yeah and Joey's drumming was deliberately not perfectly precise it all adds to it aye

This album was hell to make for the band:
505 is a recording of one of the band members had a mental breakdown.
2 of the absolutely most destructive, hardest albums ever in all metal genres 💯. I consider them death-metal they are so hard. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@CoachJasonCurtis this is definitely death metal influenced nu metal out there. If it wasn’t for this album, we probably wouldn’t have gotten a Deathcore scene (suicide silence, bring me the horizons first album, Slaughter to prevail, Lorna shore)
maybe even most Metalcore bands wouldn’t even sound close to the same.
Of course it had to be this one! Slipknot's greatest album (in my opinion).

Just some context, in case no one else has said it yet;
The Heretic Anthem was written after an incident toward the end of the band's tour cycle for their first album.
Ironically Corey would go on to write such music
@@raulfigueroa588 You're way overthinking it

@@kornknot2726 Those are bad ass songs, I loved Killpop too. There's just alot of extra parts mixed in that I feel threw the album off as a whole. It is great in segments though.
The turntables on this record have a couple really interesting samples that were scratched and layed, a lot of them being these metallic cages rattling and female vocal screams and shrills that are scratched in those sections with that wirling vibrato to them, sid is a brilliant turntablist and really allows the instrument to stand on its own in the sense of darker and heavy music as a whole.
Sid is extremely underrated
Love the detailed genuine reactions ❤️
Thanks! :D
"Iowa" is THE Slipknot album. Absolute masterpiece.

Definitely looking forward to it, sounds like I'm in for another wild experience. Thanks for the heads up on the extended version :)
Vol 3. I think is great well all albums are 🤡
Next album Vol.3 is very different, it's more "artistic" and somehow "poppy", but it's still so amazing, this was their top creative form...

One of the darkest, most viscerally heavy albums I grew up with. Got into Slipknot when they dropped their first album, and while their first will always be my favourite for nostalgia reasons, this album is right up there too. Such a dark album, when recording iowa, the screaming in 515 is sid wilson because i think his mom died, correct me if im wrong. The band members were on all sorts of drugs at the time and they would huff a dead crow in a jar before they went on stage. Theres alot more background to this album that makes it darker.
Edit: it was his grandfather sorry
As an epidemiologist, I do not condone huffing a dead crow in a jar… kind of corny to be honest
RIP Joey Jordison. The Grammy's memoriam skipped right over him even though he was a Grammy winner. Shameful... 😢
The Grammys are a JOKE anyway
With 515, the screaming is actually Sid Wilson who came in the day after his grandmother passed, he told them to just put on something and he needed to yell. They thought that it worked fine as its own separate track and put it on the album as a tribute to Sid's grandma.
Didn't his grandfather pass during the Iowa recordings? I might be switching something up but idk
@@knochengeklimper5743 I heard it was his grandma but you could be right
For me this album is a masterpiece! It’s so evil, so dark, so dangerous and so awesome! You just got my sub🖤
Yes, everything about Iowa is fantastic!
Paul Gray was the heartbeat of this album right down to the last moment
Dynamite reaction and review! I really enjoy your insight and choice of words…you’re giving proper attention to the whole of the song, including the production…that’s both rare and rad!👍😎
Thank you, I really appreciate that! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
I know what you mean, about that odd peacefulness of listening to music like this. It's very cathartic. Can't wait for Vol. 3!
Love seeing you enjoy these albums! This album got me through middle and high school
Definitely looking forward to hearing more from slipknot! And I've got Circa Survive on my list :)
Slipknots best album. Hands down all time classic
This is exactly what I needed to watch right now 🔥👐
Happy to hear that, hope you enjoy the reaction! :D
What's up I am early! :D congrats on 13k!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the Iowa reaction :)
@@mollyesanborn I'm loving it, my favorite songs on this album are People = Shit and Disasterpiece
@@metalmania3678 two of my favorites as well (but the whole album is perfect imo).
Also, don't forget about Soulfly 😉
Keep up the good work Molly! ☺️
Yeah, Iowa is definitely a great progression for Slipknot. I loved hearing them lean into their darker, heavier side on this one. I'll definitely keep Soulfly in mind, and I've got Issues coming next! :D

My Plague was Paul Grey's favorite song!(Slipknot's Old Bassist who passed in 2010.)
R.i.p.
Paul Grey
Joey Jordison
This album is so special and what turned me on to the band. My older brother had picked me up from my dad's work to grab lunch and he hands me this cd (ripped and burned onto a blank disk, those were the days) and just casually said "this will fuck your shit up". I was hooked ever since.
Omg she just did Iowa! For real their first three records are so good.
Disasterpiece, The Shape, Metabolic, People = Shit are my favourite Slipknot songs
LOVE SLIPKNOT 🤘
YES!
Class review. I think this channel is going to explode, or at least I hope it does! Well done!
I really appreciate that! ❤️
Looking forward to the Vol 3 review.
there's little i wouldn't give to be able to listen to iowa for the first time again.
loved the video! the next slipknot album is not as heavy but slaps just as hard as the sound is taken in a new direction. i also recommend linkin parks hybrid theory, its amazing how electronic and metal mixes on that album
Finally! 😃 Thanks for the Reaction Molly! Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Disasterpiece breakdown hits hard. My fav song of all time!
Iowa is amazing but vol.3 the next album is sooo fn good. I can't wait for your reaction to it!!!! I love your videos 💖💖💖
I can't wait to hear it! I'm sure it'll be amazing too.
@@mollyesanborn oh and i loove your hair tho 💕
NuMetal Molly with that appreciation for the good, dark, and heavy. Can't wait to see what's next. 🔥🔥🖤🔥🔥
❤️
I’ve been waiting for this one
@@mollyesanborn my most favorite song on the album is the self titled Iowa track
YEAHH YOU DID IOWA!!!! I love how much you enjoyed it and you could see how much you were liking it. Thanks Molly!
Thanks for watching! :)
Great reaction. I've been listening to this album since it came out and I still get goosebumps everytime.
great as always! cant wait for vol.3!
Skin Ticket has always been my favorite Slipknot song and I’ve never been able to relay to others why. It just seethes from front to back and has such a weight to it.
Yes, you get it too! It's so heavy but in a more dark, haunting way that sort of creeps up on you. One of my favorites so far from them!
same. and right into new abortion is so sick.
