I painted a 20 FEET long mural in our studio!
Some of our projects have stayed in our storage room collecting dust for a while, and so it is time to give them a worthy home! I tried using spray cans for the first time (you know, the type you can make cool graffiti with if you know what you're doing) and acrylic paint, and created a custom Nerdforge-themed mural in our storage room! Now we can finally make a little showroom in the corner for our previous projects!

For me it was quite funny (as an artist who works a lot with spraypaint) to see you testing out all the caps. I feel like most people underestimate how difficult working with this is.
Was a struggle for me too at first and it actually needs a lot of practice as every new art medium needs, but you will get the hang of it. Mostly it's control of the pressure you put on the cap, working quick to not have too much paint in one spot and using your whole bodyflow to make cleaner lines. Learning which caps and which cans work best for what you want to achieve is of coursetime consuming, but also very worth it. And of course as I said lots and lots of practice...
You did pretty well for your first time though.

Handy measurements for everyone on how much paint you need for a mural:
Spray Paint: 1 can is about 100-150 sqft
Roll on Latex Paint: 1 gallon is about 400 sqft
Disclaimer: Obviously how absorbent and porous the wall is will change these amounts. Also these are not exact but a decent estimate for planning. I like to take my pre-made design and estimate how much sqft each color covers on the the wall then I buy what I need +10% more.
P.S. Spray paint is a big change of pace...but glad you enjoyed it (sorta) and the end result with the mixed media looks great. Excited to see more in the future.
    Cheers!

Had a mural painting business years ago; the largest single mural I did was 1800 square feet (American here, I know. Feet vs meters! 🙄) on the back wall of a gymnasium, don't know how many sq feet total I've painted...
Was so impressed with this! I love it! It truly captures the spirit of who you all are and what you do and create! What a fantastic mural!
(Okay. I looked it up - 167 sq meters!) I miss painting murals. Unfortunately, 2 hip replacements later and arthritis in all the rest of my joints, I'm down to painting canvasses in my studio, no ladders or scaffolding any more. But I'm still painting!

I think the purpose of spray paint art is that it is not supposed to be in the lines. Most artists who use it, just freehand it. It is not supposed to be nice nad tidy from what I understand. Hence brushes were invented - to stay neatly in lines and make it all crisp and clean. And from what I know spraypaint is not used for details, it is mostly for the background and fades/blends.

I would really love to see Martina make armor like the one she made for herself for Hansi and they could be like a knight couple!!!! Just my own opinion but I love Nerdforge been watching for close to 2 years and I still love them hope they take care of themselves and can't wait to see what they make next!!

    Thanks for another amazing video!
I think Martina approached the piece more like a painting than a mural, there is so much small details and the outlines were so small. Also graffiti artists usually start from the top and then proceed to the bottom to avoid leaks showing in the work.
I don't know much, but I think the mural turned out great so nothing really went wrong in the end. :)

I LOVED this one! A bit out of the norm for your typical style, which is a cool change of pace. I would like to see you guys soon make something along the lines of a computer monitor table with USB ports, flip up monitor (it is flipped over when not in use), built in speakers, and LEDs all along the edges.

I know this is a old video but i suggest trying the yellow universal cap its alot softer then the cream cap, but still can get a very sold line, also with sorta less chance of dripping, definitely killed it!

For fine lines you move can closer but move can a LOT faster.
This will help with blur and drip.

I remember seeing some artists that had a couple curvy cardboard stencils that had concave and convex edges of varying curvature they would hold at various positions to mask out hard edges when spray-painting; I don't remember much of the actual technique, but those swirly shapes kinda left an impression

I know a good way to stay in the lines with spray paint is to use cut outs of paper/ board to keep the section you don’t want painted blank

My God the mural is beautiful. If I may suggest, there are those cheap Ikea side tables that you can get pretty much free or dirt cheap if people are moving out or something. Garage sales are always contain hidden gems. Main reason I suggest this is because I feel like with how big some of your projects are, they deserve their own little space to be able to showoff your showcase better :D but my God this is amazing.

I use spray cans for painting models. I found that for crisp lines you should mask the area, and start with light colors and progress to the darker hues. I even have used that technique for a very large matte painting for an amateur film. It works.

Loved that you branched out into new materials and techniques you haven't tried before. The mural came out EPIC. I hope you continue experimenting with paint cans. Maybe the next time you do a big project with paint cans you could collaborate with a graffiti/paint can artist so they could demonstrate some of the techniques IRL to teach you while contriibuting to the piece. that would be epic

You should do a collab with a spray paint artist creator and have them teach you how to spray paint (something more attainable). Looks great though and well done for trying to do something outside your comfort zone. Hats off to you!
