  • The ignition coil or high voltage coil of a car or motorcycle can be measured with a multimeter in a simple and easy way.
An ignition coil has a primary and a secondary: the primary is also called the low voltage circuit or simply low voltage while the secondary is also called the high voltage circuit.
With the help of a multimeter we can measure the resistance of the primary whose value should be from 1 ohm to 5 ohms, the secondary of the ignition coil should measure between 5 KILO OHMS and 15 KILO OHMS for a coil in good condition.
If the primary indicates open circuit then the ignition coil must be changed with a new one.
On other occasions it is the secondary that marks an open circuit but the secondary can also mark a resistance value much lower than 1 kilo ohm. In either of these two situations the ignition coil must be changed for a new one.
