  • This video shows how easy it is to test the ignition coil with a 12V lamp.
We must make sure that the connectors and terminals of the ignition coil are clean and firm so that good electrical contact is guaranteed.
To begin connect the black lizard of the test lamp to the negative battery terminal, verify that the test lamp bulb lights up by touching the positive battery terminal with the red tip.
Now remove all the high voltage output wires from the ignition coil: it can be 1 wire, 3 wires, 4 wires, 6 wires and up to 8 wires.
The shift lever should be in NEUTRAL.
Bring the red tip close to the high voltage socket(s) of the ignition coil WITHOUT TOUCHING THE METAL INSIDE OF EACH SOCKET.
Now ask someone to flip the ignition switch on the car, giving it a couple of starts. YOU WILL NOTICE SPARKS AT THE RED TIP if the ignition coil is good.
If this does not happen, then check the IGNITION relay, IGNITION related fuses and BATTERY STATUS.
