The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This was the Golden Era! Music like this can never be duplicated. Those who experienced it... nothing can ever compare! Thank you for sharing ! 💖
I was 14 at the time and the memories are still clear as glass.
I’m 26 years old and this is one of my all time favorite songs 🔥
@@tylertuttle9767 You have good tastes in music.
Not gonna argue, but we didn't do to bad with late 70s and 80s rock just saying
@@natethenub6595 I love 70's & 80's as well! Thank you for sharing! 💖
Criminally underrated band. Love these guys.
I know one of the Shondells. awesome guitarist and good singer
@Mason McCann Really do, he was running a limo in Jersey. We all went to a bar in north jersey, there was some old Irish tunes playing so, him and I went outside. He had two guitars with him. Him and played for about an hour, the bar emptied to listen to us
Criminal that they put Joan Jett in the RRHOF but not him and the shodells
What's more criminal is the damn captions... when it's just instruments all it says is "upbeat rock music". Total slap in the face to this music.
I could listen to this song "over and over".
VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL SONG ! ! LOVE ! !
Same here
I do!!!
Haven't heard this in 5+ years. Wonderful sound.
I see what you did there😜
This is one of those songs that never needed to be covered. You cannot improve upon perfection.
ditto
And yet, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts had the nerve to butcher it in heavy metal style. Why oh why are they in the Rock and Roll Hal of Fame (they never deserved it), and TJ & the Shondells are not??!!!
Joan Jett did a great version of it
@@aalm7966 For little boys who got off on her but she was just a marketing fiction .
Great song but Prince does a great cover
This is one of those songs that’s just so close to perfect in every aspect, the way it’s structured and just builds up more and more until it finally ends with an beautiful and eerie last part of the song. It’s really an piece of art. :)
The BEST music came from my "era"!! Love this stuff!!
My era as well turned 10 that July. My mom loved playing music as she cleaned. No soaps for my mom. Nat king Cole , Sam Cook best Music. So county but give me 60s & 70s anytime. Mamma and the Papas
I grew up on the music of your era from my parents records and 8 tracks. I've always had a feeling underneath that I am out of place and I should have been born in the 40's or 50's. I've always felt nostalgic even since I was a child.
Pretty sure Mozart’s contemporaries would disagree.
@@georgeleorgebeorge2354 And Paschabel's contemporaries a century prior.
I am 47 and agree...
One of the greatest songs ever. One of the greatest bands in the world.
Why is man not in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame?
Who knows? Why are the hollies, the yardbirds and faces in there?
They’re too busy putting rappers in the hall of fame is a big scam
You have to understand the RR HF is a privately owned enterprise. Their decisions are based on what will bring them attention and more importantly money. The owners don’t necessarily care what we think. When you think about it, Tommy James or any other young person that joined a rock band didn’t do it to win a medal and plaque, they did it to express themselves, and the rare ones got to make a living at it.
I would never visit the RRHF or buy anything from them. Nobody should in my opinion.
The first time I heard this song, it was July 1969 , right after the first moon landing. I just finished basic training at Ft Campbell Kentucky
God bless you Russel!!
And I'll bet you were headed somewhere that was blast. Thanks for your service.
Thank you
@@russelljohnson7067 Your welcome. I lost my older cousin and my uncle did three tours in the Marines in 'Nam. I was Mid East
Shanjuer I'm sorry for your loss
I love Tommy James & The Shondells. So underrated. Listen to Crimson and Clover on a summer morning, and see If you don't find this song amazing no matter your age.
Tommy James is still not in the rock and roll hall of fame. Absolutely ridiculous.
In 2008, Tommy James and The Shondells were inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.
Maybe that’s the HOF to follow. Sounds more legit than the one in Cleveland.
@@Ron898 Michigan and Cleveland aren't both in Ohio?
In Spain we have a saying: "No one is a prophet in his land." So: try it out 50%! Less gives a stone... :) :)
@DIFyCUL you know that saying is not indigenous to Spain. You know where that saying comes from? It's in the bible. In various accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke as part of the narrative, and in John as a mention. The one in Luke reads Verily I say unto you, no prophet is accepted in his own land.
A MASTERPIECE....!
...This was a VERY reaching performance for Ed Sullivan's show...the use of trippy Psychedelic angles & graphics, showed they were getting in touch with what the 'L-SD' generation liked; the tune (& Tommy's hair & eyes 0:28), give it the much needed 'punch', to the Song, too.... (2:46)
«Crimson and Clover» (1968) of The Shondells and Tommy James. One of the best songs ever! That's how it was for me since I heard it, for the first time, in my university days in the 80's, when it was already a memory song.
Holy LSD Batman! What a great era for music. Phenomenal song structure. Genius. Instantly transports you back to the 60s
This is so 1969. 🙂✌️ Fashion, visuals, hairstyles, arrangement, and all. Great song regardless.
Song was released in early 1968 !!
@@usc919 Yeah, but they kept on playing it through Spring 1969. I remember that it was out at about the same time as "It's Your Thing" by the Isley Brothers.
69 Likes! 😁 Thanks.
One thing puzzles me. The song, Crimson and Clover, was at the top of the charts for months! The next song, Sweet Cherry wine, didn't go anywhere, but the third song from the album, Crystal Blue Persuasion, was a hit, but I don't remember it topping Crimson and Clover. And yet, that song somehow became an even bigger hit than Crimson and Clover, as time went on. I still cannot figure how that happens, and I listened to WABC in New York that whole Summer. Crimson and Clover was definitely the bigger hit of the two, or at least that's how it appeared.
@Matthew James I'm hip! Derek, The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, BJ Thomas, Carly Simon, Melanie, Carole King, Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young...and many, many more!
I love this song and the visual effects!
Fun times .brings back alot of memories.
A long-time favourite.
One of our favorite songs of the time. My brothers amp would allow us to recreate the vocal effects at the end. It wasn’t identical but it was close.
Miss these days!!!
This is without a doubt my all-time favorite song of theirs releasing timeless memories of past loves into my heart, filling it with deep admiration, tender feelings, and lonely desires! And also a deep appreciation for all of the music of the '60s 70' and '80s! I am now 78 years old and grew up listening to all of the great extremely talented music back then, not even realizing how popular it would become to the young people of today if they would just listen to it all!
Blue eyed soul and blues and rock all rolled up into one, Fantastic!
No such thing as blue eyed soul unless its a blak man with blue eyes!
One of the nicest most down to Earth class acts I've ever met.
Absolutely GROOVY!
Joan jett did a gorgeous cover
I am 77 and still play this song! No other band compares to this❤🎉!!!
Just out of curiosity, did you happen to pick up the 1st Led Zeppelin album that came out 2 weeks before this?
Even the stage set up is groovy. What a beautiful feeling ❣️
I really envy the people who were able to live through this time. Must have been exciting to get new music. I was born in 76 but all the music I love is from before my time. I wish the young people on average of today weren't so stupid and stubborn and accept the fact that todays music on average completely sucks and cant compare.
Then you really know your music. 60s and early 70s best music ever. Was lucky to live my younger years in that period.
We didn't appreciate how fortunate we were at the time, but better late than never.
@@annaseireklidou4270 the whole 70s man.
One of the greatest groups ever!
When I heard this in the film Monster, I couldn't stop crying. Such a perfect choice for such a complex relationship.
I was two days old when this aired on CBS.
This song is so beautiful
I have no idea how I’ve been sleeping on this song for so long, but it’s mesmerizing and haunting in every way. Pure, beautiful brilliance!!!
Great great song
best version
My son was born while this song was playing on the tape deck in the delivery room on Dec. 14 1976
Wild, does he like the song?
Tommy was what all us chicks called A Babe. 🔥😍🔥
They were wickedly talented!
This is one of my favorite band of time I was in high school school doing my homework Iam 67 but listen to my my transistor radio
as haunting as the last part from 2:30 is, it was MAGIC over short wave radio 50 years ago ... ... ...
I originally thought I had a bad connection lol
@@denierdev9723 Really??? !!! :)
Then you were your time light years ahead! :)
Those days we called it sun spots ... ... ...
Such a great song lucky in my life to have loved like that and been loved
Happy thankgiving

Iconic 60’s video!!!!!
what a beautiful feeling
F*****g amazing🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Trippy effects!
Cool man 🖖☮☮
yeah man groovy psychedelic
This was BIG way back then! Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!
STILL DO
Grew up listening to this stuff. It defined the time.
Does anyone else see the present ‘’music’.... as a parallel of the present times we are in?
One of the best songs of all time, bar none.
For me, that was the summer between 8th grade and freshman year. We went on our 8th grade trip by bus, to Washington D C. I still remember sitting on the bus with Nancy Meyers, singing Crimson and Clover, thinking about our boyfriends, Greg and Peter💙. These were the greatest times, with an awesome bunch of friends and an equally awesome bunch of music to grow up with, all to be cherished.💜
LOVE YOU CLASS OF 1973 WARREN HIGH SCHOOL OF GURNEE, ILLINOIS. YOU ARE THE BEST. S.waldron

All i can say is....wow!!!

Superb
It just always made me feel that everything was always going to be cool and alright. Funny ain’t it
RIP Ted Wade... a friend who used to always play this song on the jukebox at the GVG 🙏🏻 🍻
einfach genialer songe....auch wenn es schon oft versucht wurde einfach uncoverbar
CLASSIC
Did they write their own songs... curious me..... they WERE the word GROOVY........ i'm 64 now and they were the shit back when and will always be .... timeless genius.
Yes, usually Tommy James co-wrote their songs with other band members/outside friends. However, two notable hits that they did not write were “Hanky Panky” and “Gettin’ Together”
I remember seeing this. Great song.
What a beautiful song. It remembers me so many things...
Brilliant :)
I remember watching this live on television Ed Sullivan show. Never will forget!! Used to love this song so much! I had t9 be about 11 years old.
FANTASTIC SONG WHEN I WAS GOING TO PARTYS.
Born in '58.... listened to 60s & 70s Rock. The best!!
Don't forget the joints! Must have joints!👍💋😘🇺🇸

So quintessential 60's hippie beautiful people spirit.
Einfach cool hoch... unendlich...ganz ganz coole Musik!👍👍
Groovy baby
70 years old and for me this song puts the psychedelic in psychedelics.
Oh finally!! This version I was on a tv special and I couldn’t find it.
Tommy is the master!
Love this!
This was the first oldies song I ever heard... Ive never been to nam but Lord knows I have flashbacks
A true clasic
Young people today do not have a clue about what real music is this was one of those songs that I don't know it's close to your heart somehow makes you think of an old girlfriend you had when you was 19 and you're now 69 like I am but I still love it just as much as I did back then and always will good song guys I love you
I remember hearing this as a kid and I was born in 1975.🎶🎶🎶🎶🎧😎
The best, this song is special.
I could listen to this song for hours on end.
Super Titel. Ich liebe diesen Song heute noch....
First times I have listened to this song was when I was leaving Chico California my father brought us back too Louisiana on the pretence of a vacation and what"s a vacation it's has been
If you listen to this song at the dentist while they’ve got the laughing gas going, it’s a whole psychedelic experience. lol
We had already came to Arizona God I'm so lonesome for my family in Texas. 😥😭💝

Got to see them live in concert back in February. They put on a hell of a show.
SUUUPER TOMMY JAMES
Takes me back to Christmas 1968, Pacoima Junior High School and my first schoolboy crush on a beautiful Spanish student named Jasmine Roberta Falquez!
Jasmine, I hope you're doing fine!
The older the live performance the closer it sounds to the original studio version.
i like watching these videos where they have the original band
Tremolo...❤
Los 60s años maravillosos de mi juventud merci por el recuerdo
I was really young when this came out, but it's had me curious about acid trips ever since.
Empezaba la sicodelia.caray que tiempos buenos tiempos .
Saw this live on my parent's black and white console television.
That70sgirl90 you are so right
I love Tommy James and the Shondells. This song is one of my favorite's. But I don't know why every time I hear this song, I get a vision of a skinny white dude with 70s style hair and stache wearing a striped polo shirt and corduroys and tennis sneakers standing in a empty room other than a shag carpet and a little old record player and a little table playing this song staring out the window.
