My buddy was going to sell me a 18 cabin sailboat to use as a travel trailer but he sold it before I could get it. So another friend gave me a steel cargo trailer that I'm currently building a RV on. My service dog and I don't need much space so it's primarily going to be a bigger sleeper than the back seat of my Ford truck. I have a camp shower and a toilet seat that fits on a bucket that I got from Walmart so with my 2 burner stove I'm fully self contained. The biggest drawback is that RV parks won't let us in and people are so snooty that parking anywhere we get run off all the time. Save your snooty for dopers people. Just a disabled senior citizen with a really cool service dog that can't afford rent in California on my fixed income. Thank you Joe for the really awesome show you do. It's nice to see I'm not alone in this phase of life but there are lots of others world wide. Love the hat too.
Yeah I lived in a converted school bus 2004 model and got turned away from camp grounds even one that had hosted me with our old crappy class A from 1980s but the bus they wouldn't have that, if you don't have a conventional shitty camper people get all upset because you found a batter way they never though of. I built out my bus the first time around in a park, now 5 years later we have a regular home now and I'm refitting the bus now that no one lives in it, doing all that stuff I should have to didn't do right.... But yeah one thing people don't realize that build their own rigs is that some people get urinated over people being smarter than them so they will rank on you for it.

A friends dad once had a chicken coop made of fibreglass dropped in the driveway. He built an RV with it. Had front wheel drive. Took the engine and front end from a caddy. Had 2 tag axles on the rear with single wheels. Fuel tank was a home heating fuel container. Took a long time to fill and needed a step ladder to do it. They drove non stop from Vancouver BC to Saskatchewan non stop. He had many offer to buy it so he sold it. He did a nice job building it.
👍🏻😁 I built my RV out of an F650 40’ 42 passenger shuttle bus. In 2021 I rode out CAT 5 Hurricane Ian 20 miles away from Ft. Myers FL. Her complete internal steel cage (24”oc) held her together tight, I kept her bow just off the wind, so the only damage was losing my solar panels off the roof when the eye of the storm went over. When I replaced all the panels and hardware I increased the size of mounting hardware. The bad news …. I lost the first panels& hardware during sustained 150 mph winds, with gusts of 170 mph. The good news …… I have a wind rating on my mounting hardware that is faster than I’ll ever drive. 👍🏻😆 My bus has taken a pounding no mfg built RV could ever hold up to. She’s a beautiful powerful beast, complete with fully off grid systems (solar, generator, propane, water), while including home comforts like my stained glass light fixtures. With her truck cab configuration she drives like a dream, and her 6.7L cummins climbs over mountains like they’re not really there. She is my cozy (but fierce) home on wheels. No way I’d consider paying too much money for a “cookie cutter plastic” RV. She’s my Crones Nest and I love her. I’m a 67yo female, and we cruise just fine. 👍🏻😁❤️
The fella with the bronco hit home. I had a buddy call and ask if I could move a 10x50 office trailer. Well of course, (I own multiple medium duty tow trucks), showed up in my "84" C 30 and hauled that sucker across the county. He couldn't stop laughing the whole time. Ah, good times. Miss that fella.
I built mine in the 80's from a 1976 Dodge box van that had a van front, with a 12 foot box. I even had a sleeper over the cab like a class B with a full size bed. Sadly I sold it and I lost all my pictures of it in Hurricane Ike! It had a 318 c.i. gas motor that got 10 miles to the gallon whether going uphill or going downhill with a 60mph tail wind! You didn't drive it, you "herded" it where you wanted it to go and when there was a heavy side wind, you "flew" it like a kite! It was an "adventure" just driving it, because that year model was notorious for breaking the mounts on the power steering box. After it would break loose, obstructions around it would keep it from coming out, but when it broke you'd have half a steering wheel's turn radius of play! "White knuckle time" on windy days! Oh yea and ropes for the windshield wipers when the connecting arm broke off the motor in the middle of a downpour!
I pulled a 10x50 moble home 10 mils with a 1984 dodge 1 ton flatbed with a 360 motor granny low at 50 mph no trouble till stoping that was a little ruff

Friend had built upgraded 87 Ford f-350 diesel. Thought no problem moving old 50's single wide mobile home. Rear bumper was weak link, soon as wieght was on it folded it twisting his frame like twislers.
See I'm back again already lol. I was right into the one's converted from highway trucks until I seen it was a binder ( International 😂) I'm a heavy truck mechanic for over 30 years and did most of my time in the dealerships. Anyway it's all good keep em coming 👍🇨🇦

I also spent 16 years at a Freightliner dealership and I'm sure that you know and heard of FCC which is Freightliner custom chassis and I was one of the main guys on them and at first it seems weird to be pulling a cylinder head off in buddies bedroom but that's how it works. Oh yeah don't ever say "Motorhome" They are coaches don't you know. Anyway I am working away going thru your video's and can't get enough. There are some videos of the Decoliner (art deco RV shown at 5:45 in this video) that show the build and many of the features built into it. My favorite feature is the "flying bridge" (upper deck) which can also be used to drive the vehicle. It's truly a classy build.
The RV that looks like a converted airstream that has a staircase going from the back up to the top Jay Leno owns that and you can drive it from the top of the RV and inside as well
I was a wee fest one year a man had a old school bus and cut top off to raise it two feet higher with all wood carved post was amazing to I had no camera that time but I won't forget the look
A lot of those custom and homebuilt RV's are actually pretty cool or at least entertaining to see what others have done. As far as the Ford vs GM vs Dodge debate goes, until GM builds a diesel that's not total junk and Dodge builds a truck that can hold up as long as the Cummins under the hood I'll stick with my beat up old F350!
I had an 80s little rv, I talked to the rv park peeps as to why it was not allowed, they told me they have had more older rvs park then break down parked in their place.it became a real problem for them. Understandable I guess. She allowed me in for a week after they did a quick inspection. It passed. Little Toyota sweety. Engine purred like a kitten.
I built a camper , took it out to the campground, got drunk and kicked out the campground for life, I guess they didn't like my camper, but I did and sold it soon after and never drank again 😂
The whole thing about a boat as a camper it would work for short stays but boat systems are a little bit different than RV systems in most cases you wouldn't be able to use the toilet because it draws from the water the boat sits in some bigger boats have generators but you would not be able to run them unless they were in the water but because the water the boat sits in is the coolant water for the generator you could use a small inverter generator though you should have water for the sinks and for a cold shower because you can't run the on board generator unless you are in a body of water so you wouldn't have hot water unless you use a smaller generator that is air cooled love the channel
You talk just the right amount for what this is. I like seeing the home made rigs. However, I can think of no more dangerous pull vehicle that a three wheeled Reliant. I live in a large tri-axle toy-hauler 5th wheel. If I ever do this again, I'm building my own trailer. This thing is STUPID the way it's built. P.S., the RV Industry has stolen the Tiny Home movement, and built expensive cheaply made Tiny Homes. The modified "tiny home" at 8:59 reminds me of Park Model Homes, designed to be moved once.

Actually, school buses are quit flimsy. Take a look at those that have been in serious wrecks. Just like some RV's, the shell has been known to separate from the frame.
3:48 no it’s real that’s exactly what broncos do when you hook to much weight to rear and actually catch traction. I’ve seen jacked up broncos stand up completely on two wheels doing truck pulls truck vs truck. And ppl hate me if they want to but all I drive is fords 2002 f150 1992 full size bronco 1992 f350 and I wouldn’t have it any other way
If the craziest Ford dude trying to pull that mobile home had a Chevy it wouldnt have been a problem towing that trailer! And I like Fords n even Dodges but Chevys are like a Rock ! it just would have made lite work outta that little task unlike the other brands! Sorry the truth hurts n YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!
On the subject of RVing in a boat. I think it's a great idea however, Some if not most, private RV campgrounds will not allow a person to bring in their boat as their only living quarters.
Around the ten minute mark, you mentioned that school busses, being former fleet vehicles, are good to build because they were well maintained while still performing their original mission. If you can get one with low enough mileage, that might be true. However, my experience is that by the time they come available for sale, they are WAY past their expiration dates. They have been repaired over and over by professional mechanics, but when management says, "OK, that can't be fixed any more. Put it up for sale," the reason is because they are broke beyond repair. If you're lucky, the part that's too broken is the part you're going to discard anyway. But you really have to know what to look for when buying a former fleet vehicle for personal use. Full disclosure, I have never bought a former school bus, so maybe everything you said about them is true. But I am talking fleet vehicles in general.
the bronco looks like the trailer frame broke. remember cessnas shell is very thin and lightweight. for different reasons European cars are rated to tow much higher trailer weights on some very small cars many cars are diesel there
What a ford can do? Does not mean some fool should. I hate towing with any twin beam front end, due to the reason if the front end gets light the steering geometry gets all screwed up, at highway speeds bump steer and rebound get scary. My family had a 8,000 lbs inboard wooden boat in the late 80’s, a beautiful 65 Lyman my brother rebuilt, with a 350 Crusader V8. I had an 86 D100 Dodge Ram reg cab short bed I bought new, for my wonderful Dad to use after he retired, to start his dream semi retirement job of handyman repairs. It was a nice basic 4x2 half ton, with a slant six and automatic. The only option was an SE trim, with nice wood grain trim interior and cloth bench seat. That also came with a 3:55 rear limited slip differential, that really helped in snow and boat ramps. My youngest brother had a new 86 Ford F150 reg cab short bed 4x4, with a 300 straight six, 5 speed manual with 3:42 gears. Every year I would drive one or the other the 19 miles to the boat ramp at the Marina the boat was kept all summer, down in June, then back at the end of September. The Dodge Ram always did a decent job, was able to reach and maintain the speed limit, even going over a big high bridge, plus stop ok if you were careful. With the ability to change lanes and pass slow moving big trucks with relative ease, mostly with the gas pedal floored but still hold its own. One time, just once I tried to tow with the Ford, that obviously had more power, not for overdrive 5th, but steady enough in 4th, down to 3rd on the bridge, where the Ram was in second at the floor. However, any bumps in any part of the roadway, the front end pointing up in the air more than the Ram, but with the twin traction beam front end with the wheels drooping down and slanted inward, was effected by bump steer, especially over the bridge joints to the point of being terrifying!! So bad I never used that for towing again. Even my brother who rebuilt the boat with me was worried and scared. Now I have a 2019 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, that has at least double the hp of either of those two, with an 8 speed automatic, that out tows either by a lot! As for a boat converted to a camper? Yea I’ve seen a 24’ Chris Craft turned into a travel trailer camper, with what’s called a cuddy cabin, that he removed the flying bridge control area, removed all the mechanical systems out, plus removed 8” from the centerline of the hull, so it would be under the required width of 98”. He then mounted it to a heavy duty galvanized boat trailer with hydraulic surge brakes, with an ingenious electric solenoid control. The best part is he can still bring it in the water, carefully only in calm ponds because it’s not as wide and stable as before. Plus it has a cassette type toilet, plus 2, 6 volt deep cycle batteries centered along what was the keel. Using a 20 hp long shaft tiller control outboard engine, just enough to get around with.
I am wanting to build a RV out of a 20 foot shipping container and haul on my 40 foot container trailer to haul toys on the back half of trailer. Would love to see other people's ideas for container on trailer. My biggest concern Is how to do the toilet, I am thinking raised floor for the storage tank because I do not want anything under container.
Assuming you are not super tall, a raised area at the closed end of the trailer could have raised floor for 3 tanks, fresh, gray, and black, and you could build the kitchen there, which will also need water. Then you could plumb the drains off the side. Would this be on a full size container trailer, flatbed, or lowboy?
My 59 Chevy panel truck pulled a trailer house more than twice the size of the one behind that Bronco. I moved it about three miles for a friend. My truck had no problem pulling it. It was just a bit of a challenge stopping.
@@dieselbronco9247, if I had been able to hook up the trailer brakes, stopping wouldn't have been an issue. Unfortunately, my truck didn't have a trailer brake set up.
And I commented too soon... I need that helo RV more than I thought I needed anything. But I need it as self-powering, not towed. (Which I can do... 🥹)
The european caravans are super leightweight for short trips on A1 roads. A normal holiday trip is 500km 1 time per year, 1,000km is seldom because europe isn't so big.
For the money invested and the time involved, I would purchase a good used solid RV and just fix it up. I see no reason to bust my ass and waste my time building a freaking TANK that tips the scales at extremely STUPID. I would love to see what kind of milage these overly heavy self builds get. I wonder how many tires they burn through as well as wheel bearings and brake pads. Reguardless of how badly the newer RV's are made, they at least weigh in under what a block of solid wood on wheels would weigh.
@@RVingWithJoe I'm thinking of self-contained but able to make use of hookups. I've calculated that I could get away with a 400 gallon fresh water tank and 400 gallon grey water tank. Toilet could be composting. The big problem with semi trailers is they are built to take up the maximum legal dimensions so you can't just add protruding things to the walls or roof without going over these limits. I figured out that I could fit some narrow solar panels in place of the roof metal/fiberglass to essentially replace the roof without adding more height and there is enough space to fit a few thousand watts of solar panels easily. Being as large as they are, plenty of space for batteries and such. I started thinking about it when I realized a used enclosed cargo trailer is about the same price as a used semi truck trailer and the semi trailer is a lot bigger. Of course, if I wanted it to be as mobile as an enclosed cargo trailer, I would need to buy a semi truck and register it as something other than commercial. If not, it's not overly difficult to find someone with a semi truck to haul it for you from point a to point b so long as it's not too often as costs could add up quick.

Yeah it’s tough to find a spot, but there’s always Slab City, Quartzsite and a few other similar places.

I built a camper , took it out to the campground, got drunk and kicked out the campground for life, I guess they didn't like my camper, but I did and sold it soon after and never drank again 😂
I was proud of it to, but maybe I can build a better one , I got another pop up camper trailer ready, I will keep you posted. I enjoy your stuff

The whole thing about a boat as a camper it would work for short stays but boat systems are a little bit different than RV systems in most cases you wouldn't be able to use the toilet because it draws from the water the boat sits in some bigger boats have generators but you would not be able to run them unless they were in the water but because the water the boat sits in is the coolant water for the generator you could use a small inverter generator though you should have water for the sinks and for a cold shower because you can't run the on board generator unless you are in a body of water so you wouldn't have hot water unless you use a smaller generator that is air cooled love the channel

You talk just the right amount for what this is. I like seeing the home made rigs. However, I can think of no more dangerous pull vehicle that a three wheeled Reliant. I live in a large tri-axle toy-hauler 5th wheel. If I ever do this again, I'm building my own trailer. This thing is STUPID the way it's built. P.S., the RV Industry has stolen the Tiny Home movement, and built expensive cheaply made Tiny Homes. The modified "tiny home" at 8:59 reminds me of Park Model Homes, designed to be moved once.

Actually, school buses are quit flimsy. Take a look at those that have been in serious wrecks. Just like some RV's, the shell has been known to separate from the frame.

3:48 no it’s real that’s exactly what broncos do when you hook to much weight to rear and actually catch traction. I’ve seen jacked up broncos stand up completely on two wheels doing truck pulls truck vs truck. And ppl hate me if they want to but all I drive is fords 2002 f150 1992 full size bronco 1992 f350 and I wouldn’t have it any other way
If the craziest Ford dude trying to pull that mobile home had a Chevy it wouldnt have been a problem towing that trailer! And I like Fords n even Dodges but Chevys are like a Rock ! it just would have made lite work outta that little task unlike the other brands! Sorry the truth hurts n YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!
On the subject of RVing in a boat. I think it's a great idea however, Some if not most, private RV campgrounds will not allow a person to bring in their boat as their only living quarters.
Good point. Like custom school buses and such, you need to go to state park and other more loose campgrounds.

Around the ten minute mark, you mentioned that school busses, being former fleet vehicles, are good to build because they were well maintained while still performing their original mission. If you can get one with low enough mileage, that might be true. However, my experience is that by the time they come available for sale, they are WAY past their expiration dates. They have been repaired over and over by professional mechanics, but when management says, "OK, that can't be fixed any more. Put it up for sale," the reason is because they are broke beyond repair. If you're lucky, the part that's too broken is the part you're going to discard anyway. But you really have to know what to look for when buying a former fleet vehicle for personal use.
Full disclosure, I have never bought a former school bus, so maybe everything you said about them is true. But I am talking fleet vehicles in general.

the bronco looks like the trailer frame broke. remember cessnas shell is very thin and lightweight. for different reasons European cars are rated to tow much higher trailer weights on some very small cars many cars are diesel there

What a ford can do? Does not mean some fool should. I hate towing with any twin beam front end, due to the reason if the front end gets light the steering geometry gets all screwed up, at highway speeds bump steer and rebound get scary. My family had a 8,000 lbs inboard wooden boat in the late 80’s, a beautiful 65 Lyman my brother rebuilt, with a 350 Crusader V8. I had an 86 D100 Dodge Ram reg cab short bed I bought new, for my wonderful Dad to use after he retired, to start his dream semi retirement job of handyman repairs. It was a nice basic 4x2 half ton, with a slant six and automatic. The only option was an SE trim, with nice wood grain trim interior and cloth bench seat. That also came with a 3:55 rear limited slip differential, that really helped in snow and boat ramps. My youngest brother had a new 86 Ford F150 reg cab short bed 4x4, with a 300 straight six, 5 speed manual with 3:42 gears. Every year I would drive one or the other the 19 miles to the boat ramp at the Marina the boat was kept all summer, down in June, then back at the end of September. The Dodge Ram always did a decent job, was able to reach and maintain the speed limit, even going over a big high bridge, plus stop ok if you were careful. With the ability to change lanes and pass slow moving big trucks with relative ease, mostly with the gas pedal floored but still hold its own. One time, just once I tried to tow with the Ford, that obviously had more power, not for overdrive 5th, but steady enough in 4th, down to 3rd on the bridge, where the Ram was in second at the floor. However, any bumps in any part of the roadway, the front end pointing up in the air more than the Ram, but with the twin traction beam front end with the wheels drooping down and slanted inward, was effected by bump steer, especially over the bridge joints to the point of being terrifying!! So bad I never used that for towing again. Even my brother who rebuilt the boat with me was worried and scared. Now I have a 2019 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, that has at least double the hp of either of those two, with an 8 speed automatic, that out tows either by a lot! As for a boat converted to a camper? Yea I’ve seen a 24’ Chris Craft turned into a travel trailer camper, with what’s called a cuddy cabin, that he removed the flying bridge control area, removed all the mechanical systems out, plus removed 8” from the centerline of the hull, so it would be under the required width of 98”. He then mounted it to a heavy duty galvanized boat trailer with hydraulic surge brakes, with an ingenious electric solenoid control. The best part is he can still bring it in the water, carefully only in calm ponds because it’s not as wide and stable as before. Plus it has a cassette type toilet, plus 2, 6 volt deep cycle batteries centered along what was the keel. Using a 20 hp long shaft tiller control outboard engine, just enough to get around with.

I am wanting to build a RV out of a 20 foot shipping container and haul on my 40 foot container trailer to haul toys on the back half of trailer. Would love to see other people's ideas for container on trailer. My biggest concern Is how to do the toilet, I am thinking raised floor for the storage tank because I do not want anything under container.
Assuming you are not super tall, a raised area at the closed end of the trailer could have raised floor for 3 tanks, fresh, gray, and black, and you could build the kitchen there, which will also need water. Then you could plumb the drains off the side.
Would this be on a full size container trailer, flatbed, or lowboy?
The “container” is super heavy, but a number of people in the Expedition Vehicle community do use them on 6x6’s

My 59 Chevy panel truck pulled a trailer house more than twice the size of the one behind that Bronco. I moved it about three miles for a friend. My truck had no problem pulling it. It was just a bit of a challenge stopping.

For the money invested and the time involved, I would purchase a good used solid RV and just fix it up. I see no reason to bust my ass and waste my time building a freaking TANK that tips the scales at extremely STUPID. I would love to see what kind of milage these overly heavy self builds get. I wonder how many tires they burn through as well as wheel bearings and brake pads. Reguardless of how badly the newer RV's are made, they at least weigh in under what a block of solid wood on wheels would weigh.

I'm considering a semi trailer build. A sort of mix between tiny home and travel trailer.
Would you want it self-contained or hook-up dependent?
@@RVingWithJoe I'm thinking of self-contained but able to make use of hookups. I've calculated that I could get away with a 400 gallon fresh water tank and 400 gallon grey water tank. Toilet could be composting. The big problem with semi trailers is they are built to take up the maximum legal dimensions so you can't just add protruding things to the walls or roof without going over these limits. I figured out that I could fit some narrow solar panels in place of the roof metal/fiberglass to essentially replace the roof without adding more height and there is enough space to fit a few thousand watts of solar panels easily. Being as large as they are, plenty of space for batteries and such. I started thinking about it when I realized a used enclosed cargo trailer is about the same price as a used semi truck trailer and the semi trailer is a lot bigger. Of course, if I wanted it to be as mobile as an enclosed cargo trailer, I would need to buy a semi truck and register it as something other than commercial. If not, it's not overly difficult to find someone with a semi truck to haul it for you from point a to point b so long as it's not too often as costs could add up quick.
