  • “The Pasadena Polka” was written by Phil Andreen. Phil was a very good friend of mine and an excellent musician in addition to being a prominent Attorney. Musically, Phil was a founder of the long-running San Diego Jazz Festival, a member of the Mickey Finn band when they had a night club in San Diego, the leader of The Crown City Jazz Band which played weekly in the same Pasadena restaurant for many decades, and the trombonist in the Night Blooming Jazzmen with me until his passing last year. Phil was also a very good songwriter. One of his tunes was even performed on the Ed Sullivan Show ( • Rita Pavone "Big Deal"... ).
We used to perform The Pasadena Polka in Phil’s bands and sometimes even in the Night Blooming Jazzmen. Last year, I arranged this polka for small jazz band and performed it at a party at my home. I decided to create this video based on that arrangement. Although this is not a jazz piece, I have treated it as it might have been played by a 1930s studio pop band such as those of Harry Reaser.
    The instrumentation is
    Clarinet
    Trumpet
    Alto Sax
    Piano
    Tuba
    Drums
plus a vocal trio. I play and sing all the parts on this video, so it is entirely my fault!

I feel like this is what RUclips was created for. 😊 Thank you for enlightening me with this performance.
