  • I’ve wanted to make this one for some time ; black chested buzzard eagles / Chilean blues , are quite unlike most falconry birds , and their potential here in the U.K. has hardly been tapped into . Astounding display birds or powerful falconry companion: you choose!

Amazing birds, been wanting an extended video on them for ages! Surprised there aren't more people hunting with them, would love to see them really going for it.
I love how he looks like he's going to take the falconer's arm off when he stoops but then lands like a butterfly.

Hi Dave - just saw your video about the Chilean Eagle - can relate a lot to what you say - I am a German falconer living in Denmark - I was one of the first German falconer flying Harris Hawks 30 years ago and I also was interested in the Chilean for a long time - got one 4 years ago in Denmark and for the first two years was just flying here in strong winds just for fun - she climbed up to 500-600 meters - a little point in the sky and came down like a stone - amazing stews - but she also was always after hares when she saw one - so two years ago I started to try hunting with here and in the first year she got 2 hare - last year I got 8 hare and 9 rabbits with her - so not to bad - I would say you need a lot of training and patience with such a bird but they are definitely capable - they might not catch as much as a golden eagle or a goshawk but they are certainly capable and grow with more and more experience - I fly may bird for hunting with 2,2 to 2,4 kg - summer wheight is around 3 kg - so a pretty big and powerful bird - so I hope it will be better and better over the years and is underestimated in falconry - but you need to be patient and don’t give up - reg. Lothar

Thanks again for another great video Dave. I’ve always really thought the Chilean blue eagle was a really smart bird had no idea how much depth they had as a species that’s I’ve completely overlooked! Is there anything bigger it would take in the wild other than hares? Given that a female is nearly twice the weight of a female red tail? Fox cub maybe? Keep up with the great videos loving these.

Are only some breeding lines actually blue, or does that only show up at certain age ranges, or does it depend on particular lighting? The black/gray/white coloration is wonderful as is, but the pictures of blues are truly exotic.

They _are_ kite like, huh, I want one now, there's a ferruginous here I'm trying to get ready to trap, I don't want him getting into any poisoned rats, looks like he's been eating mostly ground squirrels and grackles because I've been finding a lot of hides and feathers.

Great Video. I have a small Falconry Centre in Orkney, it is real windy here. Do you think a Chilean Blue could cope with Northern Isles wind. Really want the bird to use for hunting as it is mental windy most of the time😂 My personal winter enjoyment.

Thanks, Dave... lovely bird, certainly, maybe, "special needs"? But, as often said: fly them the way they are built to fly, on prey that's appropriate, and prey that's *available*!
    Or, so I've heard.
