Falconry is the name given to the act of hunting with a trained bird of prey , however many falconers also train birds to fly using falconry techniques . Sometimes purely for the pleasure of watching the birds fly, often to try and get the public at large thinking about various aspects of conservation . To achieve this we fly the birds to entertain and can use this time to weave in various mess...

A really ghood presentation This. I would, however, encourage you to look up the meaning of "bouancy". Either that or, if you choose to continue using that word, perhaps tell us how much water each bird displaces.
Pretty boy how much does he weigh
wow fantastic insight. thank you .this is pure gold. practical and common sense.
Cheers
Met dave and his wife today and roxy mark and ann wating for operation great day thx to you and your team

Always hood train my birds, dont care what " experienced" falconers say, hooding my birds has got me out of so many sticky situations.
Same here for sure !
One thing I just remembered to mention about how loud bald eagles are... on the level of all the raptors I've worked with save striated caracaras they are one of the few raptors that are on the same sound level as a parrot. Video audio does not do it justice, they can make your ears ring and ache when they get going.
Enjoyed this insight, cheers, all very lovely.
My wife and I seen a sparrowhawk land with prey in it's claws on the lawn in our garden, here in Scotland,it was so cool!👌out of all the birds of prey that I have seen in the wild, the sparrowhawks are my favourite,,,and I'm honestly thinking of getting one!😆is a sparrowhawk a good bird to start with?
Ironically it’s pretty much the worse bird to start with and few manage to fly them for just one season let alone several ; typical eh!
Thanks for the video Dave, very informative. Definitely a cool species but something very easy to mess up.
Thank you
Hi Dave I’ve got a year old Harris sold to me as not vocal and she is a little bit but it’s not and exited for food scream it’s a get away from me I’m thinking it’s just coz we haven’t fully flown and yet to bond I hope what do u think
I know the sound ; he you’re on the right lines , Just be careful she doesn’t smack you in the face at this stage

I know that I'm WAY late, but I originally subbed for the snake content and had NO IDEA about your other channels. I clicked the link to the snake channel and received a notification that the page no longer existed. Did you nix your snake content completely? Or did you change the name/location of the channel? I would much appreciate a link if you still maintain such a channel because I loved your snake content.
Well that’s not ideal!! Try this link and let me know please ! And thanks a lot youtube.com/@snakesplus?si=eFmdGKttVkjsiLvq
Honestly everything you've said about bald eagles is so similar to parrots, especially african greys, they're so neophobic its unreal. I guess something about their lifestyle has selected for it? It clearly keeps them alive in the wild. Interestingly, you also have to be aware of parrot beaks at all times too, they can rip a finger off or break it in half if you're not careful! ETA: Apparent the Milvus kites are p closely related to the sea eagle family and the one I worked with and others I've heard about have been extremely neophobic and nervous. My attitude to hoods changed the moment I understood what their purpose was, I'm autistic and loud noises and busy enviroments can overstimulate me. No one minds when I put on headphones. Their eyes are just so powerful that it really is the best option, we can't change the world around them or their completely reasonable reactions to being overwhelmed. I love hoods!!! To be honest, I think eagles are my future, I'm not going to jump into them but every eagle I've worked with has just clicked with me, even when they're difficult. I'm starting out with a HH (for pest control too) but I kind of think my falconry niche is going to be eagles eventually 😅 I think I prefer the Aquilas to the fish eagles, just from the experience I've had. My absolute dream of dreams is to fly a female golden on roe deer, but who knows if that'll ever happen! It's good to have ambitions so I'm not squashing them just yet.
You make good points as I can honestly say raining out yellow billed kites are very much like mini bald eagles except not nasty! But similar neophobia ! Maybe it’s to do with being a bit clever then like the parrots ? More risk adverse to live longer !
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboyInteresting that you'd say that because your technique with feeding out of the hood is literally things I've seen with African Grey trainers, putting nuts/treats on objects to overcome neophobia. Corvids can be super neophobic too, and I guess in the wild the ones who survived the most would be ones who waited for the braver ones to take the risk. The funny jump corvids do is to avoid a potential attack from a not dead carcass. Some parrots and corvids learn by example, fear disappears when someone proves its safe. Birds in captivity can't be surrounded by 10s of their own kind to learn from, I suppose that's part of the job of the falconer/trainer, to fill in that social gap for them, even if its in a different form
Rats too eh
I think its a social aspect, in a crowd that might gather around a new food source kites and fish eagles will wait until one of them is brave enough to test it, and they learn either way. We take social a very different way to these animals but its clear that on some level social learning and neophobia keep them alive. Which is maybe why its in parrots/rats/corvids too Something I've noticed is that both the kite and the bald eagle I've worked with held grudges but also had soft spots with the same intensity.
Are African Grey parrots neophobic or are they cautiously curious?
Not sure who would have enough skills to hunt with them. Looking at the way goldens are flown for hunting anything other than from soar / waiting on or at least from trees is laughable. Balds would do a better job off the fist for sure than a GE. Just my opinion anyway.
Very good fliers for sure
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy What about training Bald Eagles 🦅 to kill and eat feral cats? And what about working with Harpy Eagles and African Crowned Eagles?
Can’t comment as not something I’ve ever done but cats kill eagles with their toxic bites so bit risky
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy Really? I've seen many videos of Eagles 🦅 primary bald eagles eating house cats. Does cat bite fever affect Eagles? Also, what happens when you cross-breed a bald eagle with a golden eagle?
@tevinwoods8867 wild birds do what they do to get by but as falconers we try not to get our birds injured ; cats are phenomenal. Things when it comes to fighting for their lives and their saliva is really toxic for sure . Not sure re crosses as I do prefer pure personally
Wonderful video, learned a great deal about bird psychology and how to manage difficult birds. Bald Eagles have a difficult temperament and can be bullies and as you explain this is because of their social behaviour having to squabble over food. However why are they so nervous and neophobic?
I have no idea but maybe it’s stood them in good stead in the wild ?
Ecologically generalised birds usually have an inquisitive demeanour while specialist birds are more reserved. Hence highly specialised birds tend to be more neophobic. You can not describe the Bald Eagle as a specialist?
@CarlJones-i3z I’d say a bit of an all rounder tbh …?
Rod hulls emu comparison cracked me up. Brilliant Dave.
Honestly it’s the same behaviour!
Also I forgot to say what a great video. The voice of experience. 👍
@NS-hy7gg and 70s tv hehe
Amazing video. Thank u
Dave you are a treasure trove of falconry knowledge and experience
Glad you’re enjoying it; more to come !
Thank you for this video. We got a 2 years old Harris Hawk that had never been hunting before. He is good at freeflying, a very nice well mannered bird. He is intelligent and this is a problem. He is chasing rabbits pulled on the string ( (I am getting them with an air rifle)but completely ignoring the real ones that are actually running. He is intelligent enough to recognise the line the rabbit will be towed and becoming agitated as if he knows that the ''towing game'' is about to begin. Will this be possible to train him to hunt?
Yes they all soon learn difference between dragged carcass and real game! Ye sit will deffo learn to hunt ; having lots of game available to provide lots of opportunity is key. Then it may be a case of little bit of weight reduction until it switches on to try and catch stuff
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy Thank you very much for your advise- much appreciated. We will try work with the weight. All the best
what do you use to make your falconry perches bounce like in the back ground next to this eagle?
Tell me when in the video ? What minute in? I’ll take a look
We had a few of these idiots killing hares with hook beaks near my neck of the woods.Unfortunately for them they forgot to conceal their vehicles and had a very long and expensive day out.
Obviously people who have very sad lives. To think that in this day and age you have such primitive people seems unbelievable.
We Eat meat and prefer ethically sourced and killed . If you’re a vegan fair enough
Trying to tame a sparrowhawk is like trying to befriend a polar bear. Some things are meant to be forever wild.
Unless it’s not from the wild I guess , oddly wild ones from suburbia are easier to train than captive bred parent reared…
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy I don't know...every falconer I've met have been able to tame everything but these wild little free spirits
Sometimes we give up so .much for our Families and Jobs that we loose contact with ourselves and the things we loved before we took on responsibilities. I myself am making a serious effort this year to spend more time on myself and my hobbies, feathered Birds and Motorbikes. I think if we are happy in ourselves then we are more likely to to be better at working on our responsibilities.
True , need to get the right balance eh
Tethered eagle owls are used by gamekeepers on the yorkshire moors to bait in other raptors which mob them, I'll leave the rest up to you. That's where the ones in Yorkshire came from.
Fantastic video, my personal favourite is The Alpine newt, the males are blue /purple, absolutely stunning creatures. I've bred smooth newts successfully on and off for many years now from an early age.
Yes they certainly are pretty things !
Once again fantastic video, Dave. For years I hunted crows, with longwings and goshawks, whilst also training crows & ravens for TV and film work. I get totally where you are coming from with this video. I once slipped a young gyrxperegrine at a local crow, one that I saw daily, the gyrxperegrine was at the very start of his career, and it was an easy slip, and defo not sporting. For years after that crows partner gave me grief every time she saw me, and didn't take another mate for 3 springs. It took a few months to click why this random crow was giving me shit every time I appeared, but once it did, I never slipped another falcon on that bit of land, the guilt at her/his grief or anger made me realise that they weren't just crows, but they had a life outside of the scope of requirements that I'd imposed upon them.
It’s true once you learn about them there’s way more to them ( likely why most of us here don’t keep pet pics etc hehe)
Brutal Planet 💚
I know each individual bird is different, but In your experience how long did it take your sparrow hawk from hatching to hard penned?
It’s been way too long to remember , I think musket’s about four or five weeks and another week or so for females but don’t quote me
I REALLY resonate with this... Kind regards from Mexico!
Do you mind uploading how do you train a new partner from the beginning?
Search my falconry playlist or harris hawk playlist there is an 11 part series “ how to train a Harris hawk”
I'm not hunting yet, but I was into parrots and corvids before I got into falconry and realised that what I wanted was to hunt and form a hunting partnership with a bird of prey. I like to befriend wild corvids and I do worry about what will change when I get a raptor eventually. They're the one prey species I really don't want to hunt, but I might one day - love and respect for the quarry is everything, and the flights corvids can give are just as incredible as any raptor's! We are apex predators and part of the ecosystem too, and we are also the only apex predators who are aware of that balance. Hunting is in our blood! I also feel as if falconry allows us to bring kindness to a natural hunt, dispatching the prey fast and painlessly so it doesn't have to experience the agony of being eaten alive. Of course, I'm still a novice, but I've had about a year of research and listening and observation and I'm trying to go into my first hunt with the right attitude and ethics. I think I probably will hunt corvids one day, because I love them, and because raptors hunt and eat crows even with no humans present. But that's a long way off!
Well done for planning first . Yes i sometimes hunted crows with my last gos, wouldn’t target them as main quarry now maybe ; going soft
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboyI'm aware falconry is a lifestyle, and I'm glad I'm getting into it young! I have no desire to rush into it and ruin a bird for no good reason other than my impatience! I'd love to fly a crow falcon off the fist one day but thinking about it still makes me grimace slightly... I'll never say never though!
One of the hardest parts of falconry for me, but life needs life to survive. Most peaple who see their food in supermarkets have disconnected from an ancient sense, to be a falconer should wake you up to these deep hunter gatherer ways that have been mechanised by modern farming. It also give us a respect for just how nature works, a balance that evolution has weighed up, something that we cant see in the moment. I love nature and I try to reason as my hawks feeds, as you say the hawks or predators have no such thoughts. Lovely food for thought in this video.
Cheers pete and we just got home! Four hours!
Very wise words Dave. As Falconers, hunters, whatever , we owe it to our quarry and indeed ourselves and our sport to have an ethical and sensible attitude towards our treatment and attitude towards those animals we hunt.
I feel it’s important and without them we’d have no falconry …
I agree with everything your saying a love of one’s quarry is essential, from rabbit to crow I admire them all.
Same for sure
Dont think they like the idea with the lost hhs breeding with the wild buzzards
No who would eh
Goshawk? Or an eagle ,harris hawk hybrid?
Not specific enough hehe

Ones only thinking that yesterday ! Bare with I have loads of videos in my head but sometimes don’t have enough time ! Stay tuned !
Any tips for manning a sparrowhawk? I’ve had my female nearly 2 weeks and she’s still nervous and opens her mouth on my approach. Is this normal? She’s just started flying, she’s about 33 days old. Feeds well off the glove and the lure without mantling. I don’t know if it takes time for them to come round or this is just how they are coz I know accipiters are known for being somewhat erratic.
One if the hardest birds to fly and to fly consistently past one season . Weight / starving being the biggest issue followed by correct weight to fly well and respond well . Just make sure when handling her it’s all good like around food and training . Just being dragged around on the glove isn’t always the best manning especially if you’re subjecting her to fearful situations . Do manning and training around feeding when the bird has an appetite
Thanks so much for the shoutout at the end Dave! Much appreciated 👍 Exciting about your new bird!
Excellent stuff, Dave. Couldn't agree more with you! Cheers, Adam Hardy
Thanks for the plug mate .....looking forward to that "secret bird" almost as much as if it were going to be mine.
