The Caledonian Set danced at the Kilrush Fleadh Cheoil in 1967. Lots of famous musicians in the background including Junior Crehan,Michael Falsey,Jimmy Ward,Seamus Connolly and members of the Laichtín Naofa Ceili Band, which came from Miltown/Quilty area of west Clare. One can feel the excitement and atmosphere from watching this clip from so many years ago. I had the privilege of being there while this was being recorded.
The dancers, the musicians, the audience all as one . Everyone having a good time. Marvelous.
The Irish really are fantastic at the music and the dancing. My Galway Auntie used to tell me about these dances back home when we were both living in Essex and watching this I know what she means. The spirit of loving life!
Wow great to see my Grandfather and Grandmother dancing together. Marcus was a talented boy! Wow thanks for uplifting this!
50 years ago now and still excellent music
sure do feel the excitement & atmosphere, the dancers so fine to the music
Great video! Lot of history in it!
My late grandmother Baby Anne Galvin is dancing with Marcus Welsh at the start and then Michael Boyle. She is the woman whose legs are shown at the start.
My late grandfather Paddy Galvin who passed away in May 2006 aged 95 is playing the fiddle behind Jimmy Ward on banjo. Michael Falsey is on the pipes whom I myself know and have played in a few sessions with.
Irene Wickham from Quilty is also dancing.
Any chance you're related to Martin Galvin in New York? :-)
I love the opening few seconds, the bright lights of Kilrush (!!!) then the feet, ready to dance and a line up of some of the greatest fiddleplayers ever!!
Yes, 100% yes.
Those were the days; young and old enjoying the same tunes!
Thank you clarebannerman! :))
I've never seen 1 minute 34 seconds as explosively lively yet as tightly controlled as this, anywhere.
We weren't baaaad in Galway but we do know when and where to get bet and it's down there in West Clare. Bannerman you've a lot to answer for and it's all on the verge of being out of this world.
Love this video, that is my great aunty baby anne starting off the the dance top music good session Quilty is the home of it brapp brapp
A moment in time . . . Good people, good music.
That tempo is outstanding...great set, love to see the Caladonian at our local.
aaaah... I love that old stuff ...
clarebannerman is THE MAN !!
Rest in Peace Michael Boyle - a brilliant set dancer he was
I knew Michael. He was from Quilty. Never drank alcohol. Also could dance almost any type of dance. He used to attend the showband dances at the time and he was always first on the floor to dance quickstep, foxtrot, waltz, tango, etc..etc. He also used to referee the local football matches..The man who kept Brylcreem in business before it was ever heard of ..He died tragically in a fire at his home in Quilty, County Clare in 2010.
Memories of my childhood in miltown malbay Clare.
you can't fail to get excited with type of music & dance, absolutely 1st class, wish I'd been there!! I have this clip on a video I have.
Wonderful, wish I could have been there. M. Riley
Its mighty ❤
only the best from the Clarebannerman, thanks
Excellent.
Priceless! Thanks for posting.
Junior Crehan is also playing the fiddle. He was related to my other late grandmother Maureen Marrinan who just recently passed away on Nov 28th 2008. He was her uncle-in-law.
A great piece of film!
Jr. Crehan and Micho Russells brother I recognize great thanks for postings this
Sweeet! Loved the shots of tapping fingers and beer glasses. :)
Great music from that area. Michael Falsey, Joe Cuneen, etc. Any old timers still around the village?
love
Fantastic!!!
I learned Dr Gilbert from listening to Seamus Connolly ...I met him in Thurles in 1959....never since!
I recognize a young Seamus Connolly fiddling away.
It's Around The House And Mind The Dresser
My mum is sat at the back aged about 8
Also my granny, great granny and great auntie can all be seen. My great granny at 1:29 with the white pearls and my great auntie is the second lady dancing with the black hair
My mum's side of the family were called Power. My auntie Kitty is the lady dancing
There are that many superlatives I could post for this video but you would all call me a spammer...
Great video. Were musicians playing in Eb in county Clare at that time or is that video got speeded up in the transfer ?
You had the ‘privilege of being there’. Were you a young boy?
Young & Innocent 😇
The only pity is that the video is slightly ahead of the music but i suppose that is to be expected with old videos. Otherwise it is just excellent! Up Quilty!
This is recorded in Quity isn't it not in Kilrush?
@edelahaye Oh, thanks for that. Makes sense, actually. Saves the fingernails. Nice to have this video called back up and on a Monday morning before work. I'm energized! :)
Magic.
What were the tunes - anybody?
Sorry about the double post.
Where are you getting all this stuff from, have u anything to do with Kilrush ?
@wis78rpm They are not polkas. They are reels.
Who is the dancer (woman) in the last frame?
I think I know her... a friend of mine from Mullagh?
Is the second tune George white,s fancy ?
Maids of Mt Cisco and George White's Favourite.
@BywongQueen wasn't it just?
Tá an ceol seo go han-mhaith ar fad.
You'll never bate the Wesht.
A moment in time . . . Good people, good music.
