To 10 year old me this was devastating. Desslock was the enemy, yet he spared Wildstar. Cheesy at it was, Nova had the shot, but sacrificed herself for her love, Desslock turned and realized his own humanity. Him telling the Nova where to attack and hoping they meet again blew my mind. It was too much for me then.
It would have worked better if Deslock’s fleet showed up in the final episode, when the Comet Empire’s matryoshka doll, ship within a ship was pummeling the Argo/Yamato. Now that would have been cool.
I love this standoff between Desslock and Wildstar. Very personal yet epic. In the end, they both respect each other. Interesting how they have the trademark violin playing in the background during Desslock's monologue. It actually works in this scene.
Somehow, I can’t think of Deslock as really evil. He gave a damn about his planter, and tried to save it. He only joined the Comet Empire for vengeance, and to seize it for Gamelon. In this scene , he then realizes how his obsession drove him to his ways. He is one of the most compelling characters created.

I didn’t understand this scene as a kid but as I read between the lines as an adult, I realized that Deslock wasn’t that bad of a guy. Nova’s love for Wildstar made Deslock realize a lot of stuff. On a side note, Derek happens to by my first name too.
And if the death was random and pointless, you damn sure felt IN UNIVERSE it was a waste because THAT WAS THE POINT. If it was heroic sacrifice, you FELT it too!
I always thought something was off when the Comet Empire general reported the range of the Black Tigers. I think they meant to say 30,000 METERS rather than 30,000 KILOMETERS. That's a bit of a long range for fighter planes.
Loved this show as a kid but Continuity in this show wasn't its strongest suit. When the argo leaves Earth the battle Satellite blast is massive like Main guns but then it can't shoot down one enemy ship as they approach. Also there is no way that Comet Empire shield could hold up to that many Wave Motion guns without some damage. And not one of the fleet captains would fire a few torpedo's are aim a main gun at the bottom??
You will not see Comet episode 25 here on RUclips, due to some media company exercising some type of copyright infringement control. Believe me I tried on several different occasions to watch it. The only way to be able to see it will be to get that media company to change its mind n allow episode 25 to be shown here
I seem to recall in the original Japanese version, Desslock finally saw the error of his ways and committed suicide by having himself sucked out through an airlock into space. The U.S. version thought this too dark, hence the change.
Unless I'm mistaken, the scene you're talking about was actually from the theatrical release, "Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato." Pretty sure the plot for this tv episode (where Desslock leaves with his fleet after delivering his emotional speech) was used in both the original Japanese and the English dubbed versions.

Kirk would have beamed into the Comet Empire and just phasered Zordar. Or which one of The Doctors would have materialized inside and told Zordar to just run and never come back?

This was the most memorable scene of the entire series. As a kid watching this scene new emotions I’ve never felt came over me.
The word "noble" comes to mind.

Try to watch this with the eyes of an 11 year old. You won't get caught up on the technical disparities. You'll just thoroughly enjoy it.
My favorite part of this episode is what's I call Desslok's Soliloquy. When he realizes his humanity and that Earth has a right to exist as well.

Japanese anime was not afraid sacrifice characters for plot line, Battle of the Planets killed off a main character as well.

nova was so obsessed with wildstar, she forgot to tell everybody that venture was hit and blown into space. she should of stayed on the argo
If Nova should have stayed on the Argo, so should Venture. What was the Starforce's navigator doing in the assault group?
Both Nova AND Venture should have stayed on the Argo. Venture is the experienced navigator-pilot, after all.
