I almost cried when I watched this. The last time I saw this episode was exactly 28 years ago (I was 7) and it was the last episode I ever watched of Star Blazers. They didn't show season 3 where I lived. I remember so vividly the line with Trelaina saying she would send Zordar "back to the cosmos" and my memory was accurate. Nostalgia doesn't get any better than this for me. Thanks for posting this.
this was one of my most favorite cartoon ever , i remember i use to run home from school to make sure i don't miss one show . memories i'm now 41 yrs old .
One of my most favorite moments ever in animation. More adult-focued, but it sure worked for America's youth as well. Carttoons aren't all just comedy, but drama and romance too!
Beautiful. Just beautiful. The climax of Treilana talking of her love of Earth before she forces Zordar back to the cosmos is breath-taking, touching, and impossible to forget. From Starblazers, the greatest kids series ever made from SBY arguably the greatest Anime series ever made. Okay, I'm biased but watch this scene and let me know if you agree with me or not. Onto you fellow fans and RUclips watchers.
"At one time the Yamato was a great battleship. It fought nobly until the end. While Rust and decay have taken away her once sleek beauty the legend remains bright. A legend of bravery and sacrifice. Now just as the ancient ship appears again a legend will come alive again. A legend and a ship that will save earth." Yamato 😁
I grew up with Battle of the Planets (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman: 1972 - 74) and Starblazers (Space Battleship Yamato: 1974) in the late 70's and early 80's, yet, as flawed as the westernized versions were, they were STILL originally hand-drawn (as opposed to computer-generated). The older they get, the more beautiful they look! But, both works had enormous integrity and storytelling, especially Yamato, which had an incredible story arc and not just a "monster-of-the-week" plot. Yamato is more of a soap opera, but it's REALLY touching by the end!
The whole series was about love and sacrifice. Even Desslok suffered for a lot of his decisions he had to make to save his people and the hurt he gave Starsha through his own actions saw a lot of private remorse with him; his attempt in forging an alliance with the Comet Empire for - personal revenge - only to be played along and ultimately mocked by Prince Zordar as "primitive" helped him to see what side of history Gamilon needed to be on. The recent remake goes into greater detail as to who the Gamilons are as a people beyond their Nazi-like culture and serving as space battle fodder. They were cruel and ruthless (their own culture was dying), make no mistake, but at the same time they had moderates within their ranks who held onto an older sense of honor that renewed itself when Gamilon started to become one of the greatest allies Earth ever had. Mutual support or a lonely death. Desslok's swerve from feared autocrat into a man who knew how to listen to the right people was one of the greatest character development arcs in BOTH series, and in anime period.
Trelena...a wonderful character. She's the one who held my interest throughout this whole cartoon series while watching it with my grandchildren. She has a unique voice. I can still hear her calling out to Venture over the communications console: "Maaaark?"
This was the way I remembered the Starblazers series ending, and it was fantastic. It really sent the story out on one of the best conclusions ever for a series which was more mature than every other cartoon series then out in its time here in the 'States. I don't even acknowledge the third series. As far as I'm concerned, THIS was the true conclusion to the epic of the Star Force.
"At one time the Yamato was a great battleship. It fought nobly until the end. While Rust and decay have taken away her once sleek beauty the legend remains bright. A legend of bravery and sacrifice. Now just as the ancient ship appears again a legend will come alive again. A legend and a ship that will save earth."
What is this "third series" I keep hearing about? I only ever watched the first two series. And besides, wasn't the Star Force decimated in the battles against the Comet Empire?
@@garydaniels5495 The third season features the war with the Bolar Commonwealth. The sun is disrupted by a Bolar weapon unleashed during a battle between Bolar and Gamilon fleets, giving the human race no choice but to evacuate Earth and find a new world to live on. The reconstituted Star Force, now with Wildstar as the official Captain of the Argo, is sent out along with several other battleships to scout for the new planet. Several Gamilon generals take it upon themselves to carry on the old war against the Star Force until Leader Desslok learns of their unauthorised actions and puts a stop to it.
It cracks me up that Trelayna basically said "Well, I do love Mark, but I can't go to Earth, so now I'm going to go blow up Zordar for you." Also I think I'm the only 17 year old who even knows this show exists... It's kinda funny...
I remember my parents had divorced and I moved in with my dad and new stepmother...this show was my escape from that reality. I couldn't wait for it to come on tv after school!!!
I watched this in Hong Kong in the late 70's. Trelena was called Theresa and Mark was called David. She was this great goddess figure thatstem from ancient Japanese folklore. The artist loved to draw slim beauties in long hair. Trelena was my favourite.
Derek Wildstar And Mark Venture Both Had Awesome Taste In Women. Also "You Need Not Sacrifice The ' ARGO' , I Will Fight Zordar" ! She Kicked Ass! Toast, Gone And Goodbye Zordar!
In the original version of the arguments, Derek is planing a suicidal attack on Zordar's ship, and Nova is well aware of it when she joins him. The tone is much more dense and dire than what it sounds in the english version. In the theatrical version there's no interference by the part of Trilena, and they go all the way to the bitter end.
I can recall watching this as a kid.It dawned on me that this was base on the real ship.I have to admit I like seeing let go with her big canons. And years later found out that robert stack did voice work on this show. This was one of my favorite shows. The other are speed racer, battle of the planets, ultraman.
That last scene with a badly damaged Argo making its way back to Earth, with no fanfare or music, and just the sound of its engines was a great way to end the series. WAR IS OVER! WE WON! But what a cost.
The Big 3 in anime was Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto. Back in the 80's, it was Star Blazers, Speed Racer, and Battle of the Planets. Star Blazers had such a deep meaning about struggle, survival, and love. It was ahead of it's time. Anime has its massive fights, but there are lessons that can be found if you look at it long enough. Star Blazers was one of them.
I love this show and i have all three the quest for Iscandar, the comet empire, and the bolar wars. I love all three but the comet empire series always made me cry, even at 53 years old. Charles Taylor out.
While my older sister was watching soap operas, this was my introduction to drama at 9 years old in the late 70's. Nothing comes close to this level of dialogue in anime to this day. even the music was atmospheric! I remember being brought to tears during the end of the series, I had gotten that close to the main characters!
Wow, I hadn't seen this episode in over twenty years, but it's amazing how much I remembered about the end of the show. It made quite an impression on me when I was little!
I never understood the ending. They spent all that time going to find Trelaina, and she didn't need their help. In the end, we find out she could have taken out Zordar all by herself. Eventually she did, but not before thousands died and she arbitrarily decided to take action. But doggone that was a cool line.... "Zordar, I have come because you need me."
I remember watching this religiously at like 3 or 330 in the afternoon everyday as a kid almost 40 years ago. I think this show was part of the reason I was later into skinny chicks as an adult.
I defintiely agreewith you on that. The show was pretty deep for a kid's show, but in Japan it was for a much mature audience. But it had a good message about love, friendship and honor. Most cartoon shows were trying to sell you something.
The music of Bach, and the Romanian accents of the villains tell us the comet empire was a parody of the Soviets, Gamilons where, of course, representing the Americans. Japan had fought many engagements with them during World War Two. - Yamato's remains were recently discovered on the ocean floor between Honshu and Okinawa. - No plans yet to raise it.
No, the Gamilons were the Nazis, the Comet empire seemed to be Arabia, the Dark Nebula empire were the Americans, the Bolar were the actual Soviets, the Dingle or Lugari Empire were the Spanish Conqistidors.
Always waited for this to come on my favorite will always be quest for iscandar. The remake was good I just wished that the remake would have followed this version. I can't recall if I ever seen the 3rd season bollar wars the remake was only 8 episodes. The live action movie was amazing but sucked at the same time. Thanks to the creator of this, for you changed something so destructive and loss of life into something extremely positive with a powerful message, wherever you are I applaud you for this masterpiece of try anime at it's finest!
Sweet. I remember watching this back in the day. I now understand the Yamato vs Argo connection. Heck I remember the first episode. My great uncle fought in that awful war. I understood only in stories what he went through. Horrible stuff. I had a foreign exchange student from Japan as a friend. Jungi Kowazoomi ( Sorry for butchering it man) I would love to find him. Let them have there flag ship back. Maybe the Arizona could help this time as well. To mend wounds I smell a movie here!
wow I almost remember every word & effect from over 20 yrs ago! when i was a kid starblazers made me dislike regular cartoons because of the way they designed them. the figures had shadows, the background had a lot less repeating & there was a story behind each that continued on. Back in those days, i had 2 bike like a bat out of hell 2 get home 2 watch it & still, would miss the 1st 5 min's... well vcr's wer'nt the norm back then but & clock timer & a tape recorder let me envision what i missed
This English version is actually an alternate ending. In the original Japanese version, Trelena doesn't destroy Zodar. Nova Forrester is killed in action. Derick Wildstar carries her and has her sit by his side and decides to sacrifice his life and smash Yamato into Zodar's ship. He tells Mark Venture (alive in the Japanese version) and the remaining crew members to leave the ship and live. I guess they were reluctant to have a kamikaze type ending in the States. I actually like both endings.
That was in the original movie Arrivederchi Yamato. When that story was expanded into the second series the ending got changed slightly: Kodai was still intending to make it a suicide mission and Yuki, still living, decided to join her beloved. Teresa intervened and destroyed Zordar for them while also bringing Shima back. When the American version was produced, it was altered still further to what we saw, with Derek Wildstar intending to use the Argo as a missile and piloting her to within range before he'd evacuate in an escape pod and Nova deciding to join him, which of course leads to Derek's marriage proposal on the bridge.
3:04 Tralaina saves Mark. She kills the bad guy 7:02 and saved the day, and she leaves and goes to another part of the universe and lives out the rest of her life 7:38! That's great!
She now lives with Zordar in the cosmos. She's become his new invidia, and someday they're coming back to earth so Zordar can apologize for being a bad despot. His table manners aren't the greatest, and she's always on him about his hairstyle, but like beauty and the beast, they'll end up being besties once she irons out the rough spots. Remember...she came because he needs her. Now THAT'S love!!
Exactly as I remember it 25 years ago. When I came back from work I remember this cartoon and I asked myself "how I didn't thought to search for it at youtube"? And here it is.
"Zordar, I'm here to return you to the Cosmos". I love it! See, Zordar, this is what you get for trying to fuck up everyones shit. And keep in mind that Star Blazers pretty much started the whole anime trend back in 74. for the times, both Nova and Trelaina were hot. Although I think I prefered Starsha of Iskandar.
This scene from the point when Nova joins Derek on the bridge to when Trelaina appears was recut from the Japanese original, using that wonderful piano and strings piece to accompany the launch of the Argo on her final flight. I've seen the original and the recut was more effective in evoking an emotional impact than the funereal dirge of the original Yamato theme. A lot of care was taken by the Claster editors in altering that scene while leaving the core of it intact.
Thats the strangest story!! Mostly because it is so almost exactly my story too.. only I lived with mom instead of dad.But I loved the way I would feel when this show would come on after school and I could escape the situation.... Wow small world!!
I am here to say that I watched this show in New England back in the early 1980's this show aired on a channel called WLVI channel 56. This channel does not exist anymore in New England today. When they aired this show they showed every episode of season 1 and every episode of season 2 except for the final episode. I was 7 years old and back then I said to myself what a ripoff. When the final episode was to be aired they instead showed the first episode of season 1 they did this like 2 or 3 times over in a loop for the life of the series and I didn't know why? But looking back with adult eyes now I can venture to guess that if channel 56 showed the last episode they would possibly get all kinds of hate mail from religious groups in this area. Why? Because it was intimated by prince Zordar himself in an earlier episode of season 2 that once every 2000 years someone is born somewhere in the universe with great great powers and he was referring to the heroine Trelana of Tellezart who came to eath in the last episode to save it from eternal doom. Don't you see the parallel in this story to the story of Jesus Christ in the end times when he returns to earth to the valley of megido where the final battle takes place. As I recall it is said he comes down from the sky on a Pegasus horse and when he gets close to the ground he waves his hand at the battlefield and all the enemies evaporate into nothingness. That's what Trelana of Telazart did to prince Zordar and his super dreadnought ship too. So if my interpretation is correct the writer of starblazers in Japan was trying to say that Jesus Christ had a sister that was born 2000 years after he was born to do the same thing that he was meant to do and that is save planet earth. If that's not the most incredible secret plot theme in the history of science fiction then I don't know what is.
I saw a version on RUclips a could years ago that had a memorial scene over the credits. It told the story of how little number if survivors there were afterwards. Also, I remember there being scenes in the previous episode where Knox is not mentioned getting the next plane and you see that Conway's final act of helping Derek and Sandor return to the Argo cost him his life. Does anyone know if and where I can find this version again? BTW: It was in English
If this was a school English teaching material, I would have studied it seriously. This is Tokyo. Born in 1962. The first Japanese English textbook at that time was the famous "This is a Pen!".これが学校の英語教材だったら、真面目に勉強したのになぁ。こちらは、東京です。1962年生まれです。当時の日本の英語教科書の最初は、あの有名な「This is a Pen!」です。

S2 was the best of the series. What a sad ending.
You have got to love the classics!
Nova....you were gonna this all by yourself. No woman..I wasn't planning escaping. But I will now.
Still say it's the best cartoon ever. I've heard there is a live action movie in the works. God I hope that is not true.
To mend wounds
I smell a movie here!
wow I almost remember every word & effect from over 20 yrs ago! when i was a kid starblazers made me dislike regular cartoons because of the way they designed them. the figures had shadows, the background had a lot less repeating & there was a story behind each that continued on.
Japanese ending:

That was in the original movie Arrivederchi Yamato. When that story was expanded into the second series the ending got changed slightly: Kodai was still intending to make it a suicide mission and Yuki, still living, decided to join her beloved. Teresa intervened and destroyed Zordar for them while also bringing Shima back. When the American version was produced, it was altered still further to what we saw, with Derek Wildstar intending to use the Argo as a missile and piloting her to within range before he'd evacuate in an escape pod and Nova deciding to join him, which of course leads to Derek's marriage proposal on the bridge.
@@shin12357 thank you for posting this!! This is definitely a different and dramatic twist.
I love it, Zordar says to keep firing but the next comment is to reverse course. I guess the mega gun was on a swivel??
Do you think that Tralaina could take on the new Comet empire in 2202?
RIP Trelaina
Exactly as I remember it 25 years ago.
When I came back from work I remember this
cartoon and I asked myself "how I didn't
thought to search for it at youtube"?
And here it is.
SFアニメ宇宙戦艦ヤマトパート2が放送開始したのは1978年10月14日。当時僕は小学2年生でした!
This is the American-ized JAPANIMATION version of Star Blazers. For the "Before & After School" set.
スターブレイザーズシリーズ2は、SFアニメ宇宙戦艦ヤマトパート2のアメリカ版です!
I watched this growing up. . . . it's still cool. My kids will love this.
This would make a great tv show like star trek dont u think? then a movie!
All of those women would be sexy if they were African American women!
Nova and Trellaina are still hot/beautiful even now!

Oh yeah i saw that several years ago ty for reminding me :D idk where to find it though i think it got edited out in all youtube scenes :(
This scene from the point when Nova joins Derek on the bridge to when Trelaina appears was recut from the Japanese original, using that wonderful piano and strings piece to accompany the launch of the Argo on her final flight. I've seen the original and the recut was more effective in evoking an emotional impact than the funereal dirge of the original Yamato theme. A lot of care was taken by the Claster editors in altering that scene while leaving the core of it intact.
懐かしい!
"Nova you ARE going to Merry me" - Nice Jedi mind trick.
Thats the strangest story!! Mostly because it is so almost exactly my story too.. only I lived with mom instead of dad.But I loved the way I would feel when this show would come on after school and I could escape the situation.... Wow small world!!
3:20! So Tralaina works out, who would've known!!
