  • Are you deciding between different specialties? Or just curious how I decided on what kind of doctor to become?
Come hear how I thought I was going to be a surgeon, but ended up pursuing combined med/derm training, and why I still love practicing in both #dermatology and internal medicine!

I just got accepted into derm residency and am super excited. Was wondering if you had any tips along the way. I feel really overwhelmed by just looking at the sheer amount of material in our textbooks. Rooks, Andrews, Bolognia - of them Bolognia seems the easiest for me to read and build a foundation. Although I find myself forgetting what I read as well. Even the length of the names of conditions are huge in dermatology. I'm only in my intern year, but am worried about looking inadequate next year. Derm is amazing though and I love it. Just wish my brain processed the information better. Any tips from your experiences as a resident and now a medical dermatologist?

Congrats! First of all - don't worry. When you start derm residency, you'll be in the same boat as everyone else. As for textbooks, so what your program tends to teach toward. For example, our program has Bolognia lecture series, so it's helpful to have that text since you can follow along. Others use Andrews, etc. Bolognia in general is a lot more verbose than Andrews. I actually ended up with both and tend to go to Andrews first because it's so parsed down, but when I want all the nitty gritty details, go to Bolognia. Hope that helps! Also, unless you're going into dermpath, don't buy a crazy big one (like Weedon). Instead, get a simpler textbook like the McKee. Good luck!

Also please do a video on bread and butter medical derm cases that you see as well as more interesting cases that you've been involved in

Can you also work as cosmetic dermatologist?

Sure, but it's just not what I am personally interested in.

Do you ever feel that by training in dermatology and Medicine , you spread yourself too thin. Essentially, isn’t it better to focus on one specialty and be really good at it rather than focusing on 2 specialties and only be decent at both?
    Great vid anyways.

Great question. I made a promise to myself to stop practicing one or the other if I felt like I wasn't able to do a great job in it. I actually regularly ask my trainees to be blunt with me about it, as I'd honestly stop practicing if I felt like I were providing subpar care. I never want to be "that dermatologist that practices medicine" or vice versa. I want to be seen as "our medicine attending who also knows a lot of dermatology."
I benefit from working in a place where I can get critical updates all the time from conferences and talks, so I feel regularly up to speed and equipped with new info. I also think that being open to learning from everyone (and not being above it all) is important. I do spend A LOT of time reading to make sure I'm up to date, but I think it's easy to fall behind in even only 1 specialty if you don't actively work to improve yourself constantly!
Finally - I would say I know my limits. I gladly practice (and am comfortable with) hospital medicine, but know that I've lost track of some of the primary care guidelines. That's okay with me since I'm not in that setting ever (just as an example).
      Just my 2 cents!
