I love the narrating on the videos, the sarcasm always gets me. Reminds me of Casually Explained. As far as cheaper EDCs, Kubey knives are coming out with some really nice stuff in the $50 and below range and even some with fancy blade steels that nobody will use but will argue over.

The best deal I've ever gotten was a Kershaw Leek. I went to my local gun store in NorCal back when I was in college and had about $200 to blow through as a gift from my exe. I picked up a couple boxes of PPU 8MM Mauser and spotted a beat to hell fixed blade in a box lid behind the counter. Asked him if that was just display or if that stuff was for sale. He set it down in front of me and I just looked through it. A couple of really good stag handle hunting knives from Germany he wanted too much for my budget, a couple of case collector tins missing their main knife, and in the very bottom was a Kershaw box. Looks pristine, the price sticker was from a local sporting goods store, and it even has the original Kershaw papers in the box. It's just a matte black Leek but I ask him how much he wanted for it. "5 bucks?" I swear to god, I never pulled cash out of my wallet faster. The thing was cherry and could have been brand new if the stick hadn't been broken. Likely someone bought it for their collection, didn't like it or never used it, then sold it. Still have it to this day.

The tip broke off my first one in about 1963 or so in a very competitive game of Chew the Peg and I was bummed -- but--I found another one in about 1966 and I still have it--can't believe they still sell those things.

Recommended: Tangram Amarillo... the overlooked Tangram. Maybe the "best" of 'em (I think so -- my #1 budget class recommendation for EDC satisfaction). The Acuto 440 blade is not just like generic 440C (Ganzo-ish) in performance; and this is the snappiest, most fun & satisfying flipper, as a flipping toy, that I own (by a small, but noteable margin over my Massdump / FF / WE Gent and large TwoSun TS27, a 3.8 mm blade stock, 95mm blade length camp knife). What other true lightweight (2.44 ounce) 2.75" - 3.00" compact folder can you think of around $20 (coupon code currently active) which is built, basically, to Kizer's own circa sixty+ dollar (Vangard) standards?
It made my 'regular EDC rotation'... at less than 1/3 the net cost of the next cheapest. Very practical & down to earth; fun and satisfying, without fripperies; very much form follows function. I like that.
For a cheap, longer length food prep knife inside a daily pack or messenger bag to *complement* a 3"-or-under EDC folder like the Amarillo or many Spydercos not named Endura -- the best [super] lightweights from my own trials, all available $14 and under (and all beat the thinner 2 mm carbon and s.s. Moras -- cheap Scandi's in general, I surmise -- hands down for slicing & dicing apples and such on the go) --
√ Victorinox 4" *non-serrated* "paring knife" (a mere 27 grams: you'll need to improvise a sheath or blade protector) -- the best slicer, no corroding in pack... √ Opinel No.9 Carbone (has it all over the No.8, IMO, *especially* for food prep -- I have a slim leather case coming from a Ukraine maker), 2.01 ounces... and √ Cold Steel Pendleton Lite Hunter, *very* stain & corrosion resistant, even around salt water (~ 2.7 ounces minus the edge dulling "Secure-Ex" sheath; about 4 ounces with -- I have lightweight leather alternatives coming on a slow boat from China for testing) -- the best slicer- *dicer/chopper* combo; really helps dress out a salad at Wendy's, et.al. (bring raisons, almonds, etc. in screw cap pill bottles).
See my response to Johnathan Wood below for the lightest weight, most efficient Victorinox SAK models for minimalist and non-knife folks: a Guide. These are true bargains (some of the 58-74 mm models less so, perhaps)... so don't overlook. F.Y.I. & cheers, everyone.

On the basis of two Amarillos and two Santa Fe's, I'd say some details can be variable... maybe a wee bit more so than with the Vanguard series (?). Nothing you haven't seen before, though. But Amazon can be good with returns if you find an issue.
If you do pick one up, be sure to try all those funky Spyderco alt grips with it, Bro', like thumb *way* over the top -- the Amarillo works great this way for extra fine control. I put my index finger forward of the flipper tab for this, no problems at all. My finger just does not feel like it wants to slip down and *foreward* onto the sharp bit, as you might initially guess. Spyderco virtues without loss of cutting edge to a finger choil, as with my Native 5, especially; which ain't much better in actual cutting edge length than my mostly lighter, more compact Urban, Spy-DK, and Chaparral.
P.S.- BTW, Bro', *both* Amarillo and Santa Fe came in well under $36 the pair with Prime.

Anyway, you could do a three part or just a long review of all three of those. They seem kinda cheapish but I'm still curious about seeing a decent review of them.

Good move on Buck's part making lighter models of the 110. I've run into a few people that say they love the 110, but it's too heavy and they refuse to use a belt sheath.

I really liked the Kershaw Showtime and Fraxion that you showed here bro. But I despise 8Cr13MoV steel due to the horrible experience I had with a Kershaw 3/4 Ton I bought years ago.
If the Showtime and Fraxion came with something like 14C28N steel then I would highly consider them. That is why the Kershaw Skyline is still my favorite Kershaw knife and sits on my desk proudly for frequent use.
Great video as always broski, that's why I'm subbed. 😆

To each their own... I’ve never had a bad experience with that steel. I had a bad experience with an esse blade before- but because their customer service was great- I still buy their knives. I know that sometimes we get a bad blade or two.

    • @galootlovestools

My 3/4 Ton, bought this year, holds a pretty good edge. It’s one of my favorite knives for slicing cardboard. It easily strops back to a hair shaving edge.

    • @gavocrazy

420hc and aus8 are much better budget stainless options in my opinion. The dozier executed the aus8 well, cold steels old aus8 was even better. Bucks 420 is unparalleled and I can get I sharper than any other blade I own. And it keeps it well too.
I have a kershaw skyline with the 14c28n that I carried for years as a youngster. I actually learned to sharpen knives with it. And once I started using other steels I realized how low quality it was. It takes an edge like nobodies business, but retention is non existent. That's really my only experience with it, so I'm no expert.

    • @payrocoin
      @payrocoin 5 лет назад

@@galootlovestools I'm glad you have a good experience with it. I actually still have mine. I sharpened it stupid sharp but I haven't used it since. I still look at it every now and then being how it was the first knife I bought and learned how to sharpen with.

    • @payrocoin
      @payrocoin 5 лет назад

@@gavocrazy I totally agree with you on Buck's 420HC steel. I edc a small Buck Bantam and man, I can get it to like a scalpel super quick with just 1,000 to 7,000 grit sandpaper tied to my leather strop. And mind you, I'm no master sharpener either.
But when I did the same thing to my skyline it was just tears of joy type sharp. I definitely prefer Buck's 420HC even though my skyline is the super slicer in my low budget rotation.
Yes, Cold Steel's AUS8 is good but they coat it for a reason and so, I'm not all that into it.
Despite my previous comment on 8Cr13MoV, I do respect all knife steels because they will cut you horribly but, based on my experiences with certain steels I just have different preferences.
My 2 3/4" Buck Bantam has saved me plenty of times without spooking the NYC folks.

I have an Ozark Trails model 5514 assisted opening knife that I paid under $7 for on sale at Walmart. The 3 ½" blade is forged from 3Cr13 stainless steel, the grip scales are glass filled nylon and the handle is a bit chunky, it has a pocket clip (but not deep pocket carry) and lanyard hole. It opens with either the thumb stud on the blade or the thumb jumping lever on the spine, which is stiff and takes getting used to. The thumb jumping lever is a separate unit from the blade, protruding like the flipper on some folding knives when closed and fitting flush when open, leaving a handy depression for the thumb depending upon how it's gripped. Like a Hi Point pistol, is it cheap? Damn Skippy! Will it work? Yes. Even at around $20 it's a worthwhile value for the price. It's no gas station "special."

Been busy at the nursing home Bro. I have a new app on my phone now that alerts me to your new videos. When you are a working slave like me. Stuck emptying all the colostomy bags for the Grands and Comas.
Its a real relief to here your low frequency monotone slowly smash into my ear drums. About the only smashing around this place I have had all day. Yesterday was prunes and bran muffin day. So its been a real shit storm around here. Its ok it all goes down the drain easier than a couple days after cheese blender pizza day.
Bro if I wore a hat. I would take it off in your honor. You are one of the few who can actually describe the K55K in a respectful way. I have many dreams about the K55K. I love the stainless Messer Otter. What an upgrade to something that belongs in a muddy shit ridden trench in France. Someone has a clipazine you say bro. Do sing the song of our people. Slow and clear so we can make out all the words.
I am no engineer. As I have come out of the closet to say. I am the shit bag guy. But, to see the K55K get a Titanium handle, aircraft quality titanium flush rivets, a lanyard hole with a eyelet rivet instead of the tip destroying bail and a compass in the plastic shipping pouch. That would be all the cutting power most non-knife and knife enthusiast could be pretty damn happy about. Did I forget thumb stud?
    Hey its good to dream.
I was wondering as I often do. You bro have a certain review style that is most needed by many of us. I was wondering. Even though you are the master knife bro and all. Could it be possible for you to review something random? Say a car or a lawnmower or a powertool. Not to do a sales pitch or anything like the super dude cool reviewers like that lispy guy who isn't fancy but has a wine budget. I hate those people. I don't want to buy shit. Actually I do, as much as anyone else. I just don't make a bunch of cash. At .15 cents a bag. I have to work up to afford a McDonalds Happy Meal.
That along with your videos Bro. Are pretty much my only happiness in life. Don't let me down Bro. More K55K too. Those are the best knife. Carried the same one for 30 years and 8 deployments. I am never let down by your growing respect for something you never thought you would like at all.
Willkommen im Club 55 für fortgeschrittene Messer Bro.
