    Just got done doing the same job on a 97 Corolla. Car only has 36k on it but that nasty hose on the back side of the water pump was weeping. I did new pump, belt, tensioner. It took me 7 hours start to finish, no cruise control, but power steering and AC. Thanks for the vid, it gave me a total heads up for what to expect. I did the binding thing on the water pump pulley with a pry bar. That was tough getting those bolts out.

    That's right. The idea is efficiency and simplicity. If you follow the maintenance schedule it's the way to go and you won't have problems. However many people who buy peppy little cars with good mileage aren't keen on maintenance and they get a bad rap.

    Thanks for adding to my mental arsenal. I could tell that new camera from 2013 was working hard. It was taking shake out all over the place. It's nice when the camera helps you. :)
    To look at Geo Prizms versus Chevy Prizms or Toyota Corollas I felt like I was even deeper into the past of RUclips. lol But, your video popped up, and I thought, "Well, finally a good one." :)

    I like it. It simplifies my work/life. It's a bit less efficient, but not enough that anyone would ever notice.

    I remember changing TB/WP and seals on 1997 Toyota Corolla. Looks very similar if not identical to your setup. I don't remember the cruise control mess, maybe mine did not have it. I remember that WP was a total PITA, with the pulley having to be put on right inside the engine bay. It was also my first TB job.
    Anyway, great video's Brian, I am a big fan and thank you for your generosity.

    Another excellent video Brian. I was actually noticing the great resolution and zoom capabilities on this video before I read that it's a new camera being used. I do these water pump every so often, an they are not fun. That short hose is a pain. Anyways, it might help you to add a Toyota corrolla to the title for more exposure. Anyways. Thanks for another good one.

    Tensioner if it's bad. Usually you don't have to replace the oil pump unless it's very high miles or horribly maintained or both.

    Ive often wondered why some water pumps are driven by a critical timing belt. If a water pump goes bad you could have a disaster if the timing belt skips.

  • @MrBillcritical
    @MrBillcritical 10 лет назад

    Very good. You could be an instructor. Is the procedure similar for a 96 Prizm with a 1.6L motor?

    This one is a pain to deal with. LOTS of tear down to get where service can take place. Later years like 1996 on were much better.

    Im working on the same car i got for my 18th birthday , i never worked on a car before this is my first time . I was driving the car and a belt ripped while i was driving ,my car always had a water pump problem but thebelt ripped when i went about 50 mph as soon as i started it nd then when i tried making a turn i couldnt make a left it was very stiff on the sterring wheel . what do you think that can mean? Im turning 18 next week and want too get this car assoon as possible . can you help me with it?

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 лет назад

    It's not the motor- the motor is great. It's the configuration of the accessories and being OBDII that make the 1996 the way to go. The 1.8l is legit.

    Call me a noob - but that's the first time I've seen a DOHC engine that didn't have the cams run by the belt or connected by a chain. Interesting to see the cams as gear-driven. Is that any better in your opinion?

    • @zragevii4705
      @zragevii4705 4 года назад +1

      This is a wierd dohc, the first cam is driven by the belt, the second is then driven by the gear on the first. I hadn't seen it until I looked at a little geo.

    I watched the whole thing and the sound did not line up some times with the video.
    There were also a few bad focus parts but over all 1080p was great .
    Off the subject my son has a 2004 jeep liberty and the front turn signal socket is bad I have been told its a dealer part only . I tried NAPA no luck any place I could find it cheaper other than a junk yard.

    Wow its rare to see the Prism with the 1.8 7AFE motor, i only see them with the 1.6 5AFE. My corolla had the 7AFE, man did that motor sucked. So I switched it to the 4AGE 20v black top.

    My AC belt tension adjuster is stuck! I changed out the water pump. and I could not get the AC belt off my 1990 Geo Prizm. It has the 4afe 16 valve 1.6L engine. I had to cut the belt off and putting the new one on is difficult since the previous owner rounded off the nut on the idler wheel. This belt is driven off the main balancer, through this tensioner, then around the AC pump. I noticed the bolt on the block/bracket has some adjustment, but I can't leverage the idler wheel(which needs replacement also). I am thinking of just welding a frickin junk wrench to the nut and use a pipe to put another belt on and forget about the squeaks. Kinda stuck. Does the bolt behind the idler wheel adjust tension? It turned but does nothing. I am considering just replacing the whole damn mess with a complete AC bracket from the junkyard, but all the others are in the same condition.
    I'll send you some paypal for the help.

    I can learn suspension, fuel delivery, brake system, and basic maintenance second hand (RUclips, books, manuals) but drivetrain and stuff like engine timing eludes me so bad. I'm going to go to school some day for this but for now I won't touch this stuff.
