    Ozone is an amazing advanced way to take your aquarium to the next level. Ozone has many benefits for your marine aquarium including providing crystal clear water, reducing smells, breaking down coral toxins, breaking down organics and many possible advantages such as improved skimming and a possible PH boost. Now these benefits can come at a cost. Ozone "can" break down your skimmers or reactor plastics if its not rated for ozone. Ozone in large quantities can be dangerous to your tank inhabitants and can be unhealthy for you!
    If you are going to use ozone use cation and do so after properly educating your self. today video barely starches the surface into my journey of ozone. If you do plan on implementing a similar system do your research and remember Less is more!
    I plan on doing a more in depth video on ozone once i can conduct some more test and verify some of my theory's! stay tuned :)

    I've used ozone on an older skimmer with great results. My generator puts out 25 mg/hr so I reduce it by half. Now I have a brand new skimmer and went without the ozone for 3 days as it broke in. The water started getting yellow by the end of day 2. Today (day 3)I connected the O3 to the venturi intake (at 15 mg) and let it run for 12 hours. The difference is amazing. Water clarity is remarkable.
    2 questions
    1) how long should I run it for each day?
    2) can O3 cause damage to the venturi/skimmer plastic?
    Great video and beautiful aquarium. Thanks.

      There are 2 different methods. UV which is silent has a UV bulb that air passes by - takes more electricity to run. Or corona discharge makes a little buzzing sounds and the electricity /sparks break up the o2 as it passes through. both do the job and have pros's cons. every brand uses one of the two so they are all pretty similar at the end of the day.

    Set a defer command on the APEX so some time elapses before cycling on and off at the ORP setting You have. Mine is set for 1 hour delay before coming back on, but whatever u want. It also gives the skimmer time to work better when off as it seems to affect the skimming capability on mine, but maybe I have it turned up too much.

      If you put a fitting on your lid so that the air coming out is recirculated back into the skimmer but leave that open port on your silencer open, you don't need to use the carbon on top anymore. It's one thing I took from the LifeReef skimmer and incorporated to my reef octopus sro3000 skimmer. Keep an eye on your rubber hose on your skimmer. My old RLSS db6i skimmer I dry rotted from using ozone as it wasn't made for it. I have a ozotech Poseidon series that I run at the lowest setting and restrict airflow to it so it doses less. I do that so I could run the skimmer 24/7 if I wanted but I don't. I don't because by the next day my skimmer stops producing anything. My ORP averages 415

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  7 лет назад

      I told the apex to turn off ozone when the ORP hits 350.. i guess could raise it a bit more.. I keep turning it down slightly on a daily basis until it peaks there rather than turning on and off.. other interesting bit is seeing a PH boost! There is a ton of other benefits im noticing but that will be in the second video once i can confirm it all!
      What size is your tank and how much ozone are you using?

    • @Reject06
      @Reject06 7 лет назад

      at 10 percent of my generator which is at around 22mg/hr if i don't use an air restrictor on the feed side. with the restrictor almost completely closed almost 90%, its roughly 2mg/hr. you truly don't need a lot of ozone and its better to keep it at a super low dose spread out through out the day (or night like i do) than multiple "big" shots for short times. when i first was learning to using ozone i had it cranked up really high and i noticed that all my corals started to look deflated and some of them were closing up, i was over dosing and a lot. it can hurt the fish and burn their gills if you use too much. since then i started reducing it to as small of a dose that i can while doing the white bucket test (fill up a 5 gal bucket of tank water against a white bucket and fill up a 5 gallon bucket of clean fresh salt water and compare the colors) now, my tank water is just as clear as fresh salt water.
      my tank is a Red Sea Reefer425xl and it's up against a white back ground corner so you notice really quick if the water ever starts getting that yellow tint lol.

    • @ReefDudes

    • @nietrelevant3338
      @nietrelevant3338 5 лет назад +1

      From theoretical point of view ozone should decrease your skimmers effectiveness. Generally speaking ozone breaks down large organics into smaller molecules. Larger organic molecules are more likely to get skimmed from a theoretical standpoint. Personally ozon makes a lot of sense if followed by active filter media or a refugium with macro algea, since the smaller organics are more readily available for uptake for macro algea. Or for any of the bacterialogical steps leading to nitrification (higher O2 availability improves denitrification, ozon directly reacts at a high k rate with NO2 changing it to NO3 making the NO3 availability higher) so it makes total sense your skimate turned more yellow.
