Fun Fact: Scott stated when he was interviewed with Dawko that the reason why fnaf 4 was the way it was because of the criticism fnaf 3 has received due to not being “as scary” as the last 2 games.
Dude saw it as a challenge and proceeded to make it one of the scariest fnaf games in the series. What a giga chad.

I love how this is the only game where jumpscares REALLY work because you’re only jumpscared if you’re absolutely sure your safe. Like flashing the lights at the doors is not something you do expecting a jumpscare, so when it does happen it’s really startling and the tension is terrifying.

    On the story:
Exactly as you said. If you ignore the greater implications, and just look at 4's story for what it is, better yet; look at it as a standalone story about a bullied child who is haunted by abominations in the last week leading up to his death. I adore it. And as I said before in one of your community posts, wish we had gotten a book detailing it more clearly.
As somebody who stopped giving a shit about these games after 4, this POV works perfectly for me. That combined with 4's pretty damn decent gameplay easily makes it my favorite in the series.

I've recently been streaming all of the original 4 fnaf games trying to 100% complete them, and I can easily say that fnaf 4 is my favorite by a long shot. It's such a satisfying feeling to beat the challenges in that game compared to the others. Even though I beat blind mode in one or two tries, I still felt more satisfaction than spending 8 hours to beat 10/20 mode in fnaf 2 since it felt like I was actually skillful enough to beat it instead of just lucky.

I've always loved the feel of FNAF 4, especially as a teen discovering FNAF for the first time back in the day. Sure the story added a lot of confusion to the lore, but it still had some intrigue to it that the confusing aspects didn't matter to me as much. The Nightmare animatronics stand as being among my favourites in the series, especially Nightmare.
Also, whenever I watch gameplay of the previous FNAF games, I get quickly desensitized by the jump scares when they happen, which can dull the horror aspect significantly. But because of how FNAF 4 is structured, relying solely on sound cues and making decisions within a fraction of a second, the jump scares still get to me; which certainly helps the game hold up today.

The gameplay loop would be the best if its wasnt for the fact that even when the audio is fully cranked, half the time the animatronics seem to hold their breath for like 3+ seconds which is time you can’t waste cause foxy, the freddles, and the other door all need checked on as soon as possible.
This wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that the freddles, foxy’s running, and the ambient noises are all louder than the breathing and leaving footsteps. It’s easily the one of the cheapest gameplay loops, right up there with pizza sim.

I still to this day get extremely nervous when playing FNAF 4. I've beaten it multiple times already, but with the atmosphere being that you're in a completely pitch black room with nothing but a flashlight as you're only defense item to scare away all of the nightmare animatronics, Fredbear/Nightmare's intimidating laughter as they spawn in your room, especially when they trick you into thinking that they're in your room, the looks and designs of the animatronics themselves, as well as when you pointed out the fact that you have to have your volume turned all the way up to listen for certain elements in the game such as breathing and footsteps, and how if you mess up you get a massive jumpscare, it definitely sets a different kind of tone than any of the other FNAF titles in the series in my opinion. The game literally forces you to face these terrifying things in order to survive, and boy can it be so nerve racking. Awesome video review about this game! FNAF 4 will always be my most favorite in the series.

I really like your point that FNAF 4 has no way to cheese it and the game forces you to abide by its rules and experience the game how it wants you to. This is why 3 and 4 are the best gameplay-wise in my opinion because you’re using the same tactics at the end of the game as you were using at the beginning of the game, but you’re made to get better at it as the game progresses. You have to use all the tools at your disposal to get through the night whereas in 1 and 2, there are a ton of cameras and even entire gameplay mechanics that go unused. It’s just basic game design and it’s baffling that it took until the 3rd and 4th entires to get it down

Fnaf 4 and sister location to me are both really good standalone fnaf related stories; they don't really fit in that nicely with the established lore but I can look past that and appreciate them for what they are. Would I have liked to get more clean answers as to how these games and books tie into the overall story, obviously yes, but that doesn't mean I still can't enjoy these stories for what they are.

After purchasing it (as it was one of the FNaF games that I hadn't completed/played yet), I think I may have changed my mind about it now as I have actually played it and surprisingly got the 4 main stars. It is currently one of my favourite FNaF games in the series as it has good lore and is mostly about sound/listening making it even more creepier. The atmosphere is also amazing as is the gameplay. In terms of story, as long as I don't look at the extra stuff (like that damn box), I think FNAF 4 is a solid prequel that shows how how the madness all began.
In terms of gameplay: I never got past Night 2. I'm an absolute wuss when it comes to certain jump scares, so I tend to quit with this game before I can try to go further with it. Every time I think I'm ready, even when looking up your guides for help, my anxiety makes me nope out of there.
I still hope to beat the game one day, if only I can overcome the anxiety.

The thing that made Fnaf 4 my favorite game in the series is the fact that the gameplay is basically a childhood fear of mine in a game, being a child awake, late at night, all alone while everyone else is asleep, it gives this sense of dread that something is watching you in the dark, Fnaf 4 just dial it up to 11

I do think Vr/Help wanteds version of fnaf 4 (the minigames), fix a bit of the flaws with the hearing with the doors. Because heard from a lot of friends that they simply couldn’t hear. EVEN when volume was maxed. and with Help wanteds version. You can see them coming down the hallway which is super neat! + sound as well
But I wish gameplay wise, with the doors with fnaf 4 (tiny nitpick tho) is that its 50/50 so sometimes you hear breathing and sometimes you see two tiny dots of eyes appear in the dark randomly or both idk
But overall this game is So Solid and great. it does its job as being a horror game really fun and engaging and has cool things like plushtrap even with the hearing problem with doors (which isn’t that bad tbh)

The way I see the gameplay of FNaF 4 is that it's a trimmed down FNaF 1, with Foxy added.
You go through the routine of checking the left and right doors, this time with audio instead of lights, then you look at the bed/cams to ward off Freddy/Foxy. Foxy in FNaF 4 comes in as a wildcard to break the monotony. Naturally the Fredbears completely break this comparison.

My biggest issue with FNaF4's gameplay is there is NO form of resource management. In FNaF1, watching the power slowly but surely drain throughout the night as you're sparatically using more of it up by basically doing anything makes both the gameplay and atmosphere chilling. In FNaF2, granted I agree that game is quite flawed, but it was mostly a game about prioritising one thing over another and therefore trying to manage multiple enemies at once. Like "Are you gonna flash Foxy, or wind the music box?" There's a choice. Is it kinda unbalanced? Yeah, but do I find it fun? Yep! Then in FNaF3 you have to manage your systems by making sure you're not using the camera too much so the cameras don't go down, but also not staying off the camera too long so that the ventilation goes off, and also managing how you use the audio lures against a threat that has probably the most complex AI of any character in the series. I also just prefer FNaF games that utilize looking at the cameras because FNaF is all about seeing your enemies as they approach you.
In FNaF4, there is ZERO resource management, you just run to a door, listen for a noise, shut it and then leave. You're flashlight power is infinite so you have to ask yourself what the point is of it being off when checking the bed behind you or going to the closet, and also the way the nightmares are with light is just inconsistent. Like.. they're warded off when light is shined at them down the hallway, but when its directly in front of them they attack you? Whaaat? Wouldn't that just blind them? That makes no sense. The atmosphere and emmerision is also just broken on the fact there's two doors to two massive hallways in a BEDROOM. The game is also painfully easy if you manage to keep Foxy out the entire time, which isn't that hard to do and if he does get in you might as well quit the game because after that its just unbalanced and not worth it. Not the mention the final boss of the game is actually EVEN easier than the main gameplay loop. Literally the only times I died to Nightmare Fredbear or Nightmare were if the game bugged out (ie. they kill you even if you close the door on em) or if they do that stupid fake laugh which is COMPLETELY unfair.
The nightmare designs are utter nonsense and completely miss the point of what made the classic designs scary: uncanny valley! And yeah, the jumpscare noise being loud as hell in comparison to everything else is just cheap. I'm not scared because of a genuine sense of fear, I'm scared because I don't want a loud noise blasting in my ears for no reason and even the jumpscare noise itself is lame. Its just the FNaF1 jumpscare sound but with a voicemod filter on it. The Plushtrap minigames aren't anything special, he literally moves the exact same way every time, just at a different pace. There also just isn't much to look at, cuz you barely get to see the nightmares until you get jumpscared in just a plain bedroom environment unlike FNaF1-3 which all had interesting environments that you actually get to see and a different variety in designs, and that's another thing with the designs! Every single Nightmare animatronic looks the EXACT same. Also btw I find it so hilarious how these Nightmare animatronics are built like symbiotes but then they're stopped by a flimpsy ass wooden door a- and by the way if the doors are THAT effective, what is stopping this kid from just... closing the door and keeping it closed?... Even the tutorials are just lame, its just text on the screen looking so out of place telling you EXACTLY what to do unlike FNaF1-3 which had the likable and charming character of Phone Guy (and Phone Dude) who told you what to do in subtle but informative ways and he just had so much personality and character that made the universe feel so real and alive.
And I haven't mentioned the damn lore and story but whatever. Sorry if that was a long ramble, but yeah. I'm not trying to ruin anyone's enjoyment of the game, I'm glad ya'll enjoy it at least. I just.. don't and most likely never will.

I think your point about a lack of resource management (one of the key elements of FNaF) is actually really solid and something I truthfully never thought about very much. Nice observation! That said, I disagree with pretty much everything else personally. I think the flashlight makes total sense, the Nightmares are trying to sneak into your room, so if they're spotted out far away, of course they'll duck back and retreat. If they're right there, of course they'll leap out at you, they're already right in front of you. Nightmare Fredbear and Nightmare are confusing, but I don't think any aspect of them is unfair until Blind Mode. I can beat Night 8 really consistently. Also, the game isn't unbalanced if Foxy gets in, it's still completely winnable with careful planning. Otherwise, the Insta Foxy challenge would be unbeatable, especially when combined with Blind Mode and Mad Freddy. And yet, it's still beatable without insane luck being needed. I almost prefer it when Foxy is in, because it gives me a more consistent pattern. There are advantages to checking certain locations before others and planning out a route, going to the closet right after the bed instead of vice-versa makes sense because Bonnie and Chica can only get in when you turn to the bed. You may need to run to a door quickly to get rid of Foxy if he runs up, or you may have to prioritize something else that causes you to break pattern.
I think Phone Guy/Dude being absent just hammers home the point that you're completely alone in a very unsafe situation this time, few tools to defend you, and no one to help you out. I like that aspect, I think it helps the atmosphere. Everything else, like the setup of the bedroom and the wooden doors repelling the animatronics can just be chalked up to dream logic I guess, a very common aspect of dreams or nightmares are that you're in a familiar place that's different, like "I was in my house, but it wasn't really my house" is a pretty common thing to hear when someone recounts a dream. Considering the game is clearly established to either be a dream or a simulation and the minigames make logical sense, I think it's probably intentional to be unrealistic/surreal.
This is still an interesting perspective though, thanks for taking the time to type it out!

    • @sproospring
      @sproospring Год назад +2

@@AmbienceOfficial I'm glad you're able to see my side of the argument and I absolutely see you're side as well. There's actually a lot of points you've made that I agree with (the dream logic, Phone Guy not being there etc.).
I guess the reason I've always had a bitterness towards FNaF4 simply boggles down to just it feeling kinda pointless storywise too. I'm a FNaF Gen 1ner, aight I freakin ADORE the Original Trilogy and honestly if FNaF4 was just kinda tweaked a little bit with say added resource management (maybe the flashlight has power akin to FNaF1), it was a standalone story, and the nightmare designs were something like the designs of the monsters in FNaC3 which look more like organic creatures, they can still look monstrous while having some of that uncanny valley. If changes like that were made, I'd probably love this game or at the very least like it.

For FNAF 4 being too scary, I do kind of see why some people might view it as a negative because it might do it's job a little too well, and as a result it's not fun to play. For me, outside of the VR game, 3 and 4 are tied for being my favorite, and while it's not that scary, I think 3's gameplay loop is actually pretty fun and keeps me coming back, and while I really did enjoy my time with 4, due to how terrifying it was because of how the gameplay works, after I beat it, I didn't really want to ever go back because it was just too much. This doesn't make it a bad game per se, not by a long shot and there are other games like P.T. that do what this game does but even better, but I can see why some people don't want to play this that much, because it's too scary to be enjoyed. It's kind of like with pixar, Up is technically my second favorite film only behind Nemo, but I don't really like watching it compared to films I don't think are quite as good like Monsters Inc or the Incredibles simply because it's WAY too sad and hard for me to get through.
