Dodge Hornet Issues Popping Up Oh No! Service Manager Tells All, Says What WILL Fail On This Car

- In today's video I talk with a service manager and get all the potential failure issues with the new dodge Hornet.
I got on this path with info from @WIDEBODYNATION
Its almost like they are intentionally Tanking Dodge..
Like they're intentionally tanking the US economy..
They are... someone at Stellantis is proving not to know the American market, and not to know Dodge.
It is think all they want to sell us is their rebadged Fiat and Renault crap. We do not want their unreliable vehicles, but they can't figure that out.
The American manufacturers. Make way for Chinese cars
TPTB aka WEF....you will own nothing, and be happy...-- Klaus Schwab.
I spent 16 years in car dealerships when I was young. I first wrote a long post about Italian cars of the 1970s and then deleted it. I'll just say this. After working briefly with Italian cars, I have refused to buy anything that was made in Italy. They make some nice (and very expensive) bicycle parts, but that is all.
Italians make some really industrial-level woodworking tools. Company called SCM Group; their bandsaws and sliding table saws are amongst the best in the world competing even with the German brand (Felder Hammer).
That is a damned lie! Italian tomatoes are the best. Of my early automotive sins the Fiat 128 was in the top 10! The Dodge "Hornet" become so at the end of the line. The Dart and Valient same deal although they were bullet proof mechanically they were rust buckets after three years in Michigans climate.
Campy is the best right!!! But I got to admit the itialian King of bike parts is lagging behind as well.
4 cyl 2.0 turbo on Giulia and Stelvio are very reliable
The rental car companies don't want to pay the price for them, not because of quality....
Only hybrid where I buy is a Prius just because Toyota has been doing it longer than anybody and prices of their batteries that's come down significantly on older models and they're not hard to change out either
Yeah, except you're more likely to need an engine replacement at 140k miles... proving perhaps that Prius batteries last longer than the motors???
@MaverickPhantom I can't agree with that. Those engines are excellent. I've seen several with over 250k. Some higher. People that buy them seem to hang on to them..
Yes, yes it can get worse... RIP the Dodge brand, not even Lee Iacocca and a money printer could fix this ship anymore. Now this is purely my own experience but I'm a trucker and you wanna guess how many Hornets I've seen out on the road so far? One.... prolly have seen more but I haven't noticed it, but I did see a yellow one the other day and it was NOT impressive... I've seen them rotting on lots but that yellow thing was the first one I saw on the road. IF I just HAD to get one of these damn things, they are a lease at BEST... but honestly I'd lease a effing Nissan and get me some Big Altima Energy before getting this thing. And the price they want? Absurd... you can get a LOT of sport utility vehicle for what they want for this junk. And anyone in the comments that thinks I'm just hating on the hornet, yes I am... I loath that this thing and the electric charger coming is most likely going to ruin mopar as a brand.
I have a hornet rental right now, I'll say it is way faster than an ugly car like it should be 😂
Sorry, but I dig it. Both the performance and the looks. Spent a weekend with one and we loved it.
From a dealer?
I would mix water with electricity before I'd want to mix Italians with electricity.
I own two classic Mopars (1970 Challenger R/T, 1972 Charger Rallye) both over fifty years old, but I will not buy a new Mopar because it may not last past the warranty period. That's pretty sad.
Learned my lesson when I had a Dodge Durango, and it was the last time i ever bought a Chrysler product. Bolts keep coming loose on the engine, try to jump another vehicle, and it shot sparks like crazy, power booster kicked the bucket, it used bargain bin parts Ford are using now, lol, and the transmission was on its last leg. Now I buy the older Toyota vehicles.
My dad worked for Chrysler for 30 years he always told me never buy a first year model car they do not have all the bugs worked out of those cars
Alpha has been building Tinali's for years
I agree with what the service guy said. And saying that, I bought a hornet and stayed away from the hybrid. I have not had a single problem with my ownership and am super happy with it thus far and highly recommend people buy this absolute HOOT of a car. It is one of the funnest things I’ve ever driven in the city.
I don’t think Dodge hellcat fans like the idea of the hornet tho. But it got my euro fan ass into a dodge product! The styling is waaayyyyyy better than the Alpha or other little suv things out there.
Some owners have had horror stories, I see them on the forum. But overall. This car is hilariously fun and has been absolutely great to own.
Hornet is synonymous with "Crap"- all of the line up, really.
I pretty much knew that these days were coming when I realized that not only had the SRT division been scrapped, but that we were not going to get a Chrysler 300 hellcat.
Chrysler had a perfect set up. They had the Dodge Magnum, Dodge charger, Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, ram truck, and Jeep grand Cherokee as well as the Durango. They could easily have dropped a hellcat engine and an eight speed transmission in all of those vehicles and came away with a perfect lineup.
They literally decided to destroy it all.
I’m not wasting my time crying about it. I took my money over to Cadillac and I bought an electric vehicle. Fully loaded it’s a great car. I’m having fun with it.
Planning to buy the refreshed Mercedes S class with the hyper screen.
Between Cadillac and Mercedes my needs are met.
How's your insurance premium with the Cadillac?
I like your observations, I answered the puzzle by purchasing a 2024 Ram TRX final edition. Never realized a truck could be this much fun....I was looking to buy a 300 hellcat like you mentioned, then found out they weren't going to make one, the 392 300 was just a rehash of SRT-8 Charger...
I’m surprised trends are being noticed as they simply don’t sell.
Who would have thought a new vehicle with this many problems.
It's crazy to me that Jeep discontinued the Cherokee when it could have been used to base the Hornet on instead of a POS Alfa. Not saying they were perfect, but I believe they were at least a little better than this as far as quality goes and ironically sold in much higher numbers than the Hornet does currently. It's such a slap in the face considering that the Cherokee was US made... When it was dropped the plant that made them had to be idled, and now that plant is being used to manufacture batteries for EVs that won't sell anyway. WTF It almost pleases me to see these turds fail and hardly sell, and it hurts as a Mopar fan to feel this way about a brand I've liked for so long.
That would use US assets and staff. Stellantis wouldn't allow that.
I live in Belvidere Illinois and Belvidere is the site of a former Chrysler Assembly Plant.
All over town wherever you go either driving through neighborhoods or in parking lots or on the roads there's a disproportionate percentage of Chrysler products and ever since the Dodge Hornet was introduced I have only seen two on the road.
I drive by the local Dodge dealership on my way to work and I have seen the same red white blue black and silver on the dealer's forecourt for months.
If Chrysler workers and their families do not buy them why would the general public?
Dodge ran the SUV Dodge Journey way beyond its ability to keep up with the market. Some executive genius thought what’s the cheapest way to bring a replacement to market. Whoever owns CJDR should strive to build quality and trouble free vehicles. Looking at any CJDR owners forum reveals that problems are plentiful. If you own a problematic vehicle, you may be hesitant to buy another of the same brand.
And those sticking up for Dodge and these dealerships are mad because they are one of the many who got their cheeks clappped buying one. You overpaid, way overpaid and are in your feelings about it lol.
Great video!
Wow! Thanks for exposing this issue with the Dodge Hornet! Americans keep exposing car manufacturers that make crappy ass cars!
America can build good dependable cars and trucks. Instead they build garbage. In a time when money is tight, Dependability and Durability are so key. Cost of ownership is also key. No one wants to live at the mechanic. The sales of these Garbage Cans on wheels speaks for itself. Even with almost 16,000 dollars off MSRP, it's still a no go for consumers.
A lot of the SRT engineers went to the GM racing program
Don't get me started on GM... that's another disappointment at another level. What GM did, especially to performance cat buyers cannot be described by non other than backstabbing
Like they say-'when the shit hits the fan'.....................
I was a MoPar person for years. The quality control issues are legion. I drive a Lexus now and there’s no going back.
New 2023 Hornets at the local dealership have $8,000 markdowns. Two of them are placed outside the main door, so people have to look at them when they enter and exit the building. Desperate times for sure.
On the re-watch for later today much support as always 🙏😇
TK fly to Boston.
There are hundreds of the toilet Hornets available at Logan airport.
They are PURE CRAP!
I love these people that say they drove one once or rented it for a weekend and they love it. Because thats how you determine the longevity of a vehicle, according to them.
One can love how something drives and not want to own one.
I was at Boston / Manchester NH airport a couple of weeks ago. We got a Santa Fe as our rental. When returning the vehicle, I saw a handful of the Hornets in the return line.
I was kinda wishing we'd been given one for the week.
Not because I want to own one. But because I was curious about the experience.
The Santa Fe didn't leave me wanting the buy one.
I suspect the Hornet might. However, my logical brain would take over and say no.
Just like I thought I'd want to get a BMW before I retire. Instead, I've been driving Mazdas because I get 90% of the BMW road dynamics and about 95% of the Toyota quality.
I have no complaints about my 2023 Mazda CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus.
250HP and 310 pound-ft of torque in a 3600# package makes for a lot of zoom zoom that isn't afraid of a corner. With AWD for added fun and security.
Morality over Conformity
I don't do electric cars of any type. But to have any interest, this thing would have to be priced under $20,000. for me to even look at one.
It's getting there
Rebranded fiat ?
I bought an Alfa Romeo Tonale Sprint model PHEV ( the base model, not the dolled up, expensive Veloce model, which is more readily available, as for every Sprint model Alfa imported, they imported 9 Veloces ) almost a year ago. I was the first one to buy one in Canada, and basically bought it off the truck. I paid less then MSRP, and got it less then what a Ford Escape PHEV ( which at the time had a dealer mark up of $3,500, and add ons like $3,500 for Ford's Blue Cruise ) was going for, and where a RAV4 Prime ( basically the same price without add ons ) was ( and still is ) unavailable, and a 2 year old used Prime was selling for $14,000 more then my out the door price. Other then 9 recalls ( 2 for decals that did not have metric or French on them, that I did myself, 3 for checking high voltage connections were tight, no parts needed, 1 to replace a switch, and 3 for software updates, because where I live the vehicle would not update itself ) I have had zero problems with it, everything is operating above my expectations, and I am getting better electrical range and gas mileage then stated on the Vehicle MSRP sheet. It handles great, looks much nicer then its competition ( I compared the Sprint model against the Escape and Prime, where most reviewers, etc., compare the Veloce model that they are given by the dealers against the BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA, etc. which to me is not a fair comparison, especially a PHEV to a non PVEV ). It is not perfect, just like every vehicle in certain aspects, but I love it, love driving it, glad I bought it rather then any of the half dozen or so other PHEVS I test drove, and I would buy it again. And, it fits nicely in my garage.
All new vehicles have there problems, and mine did too, but the dealership I bought mine from, bent over backwards to accommodate me with the recalls, offered me a loaner while my vehicle was being serviced, and Alfa has resolved every issue with my vehicle, some well documented. I cannot say I would have gotten the same treatment from any other manufacturer.
Maybe I am lucky with my vehicle, but my whole experience, from buying it through to service, driving, etc., could not have been simpler, easier, stress free, and satisfying.
Even so, and I think the Tonale/Hornet are a good product (in ICE only form) the prices are outrageous, it will kill the sales.
Ask him about the engine’s intake valves are actuated by electronic oil hydraulics; no mechanical cam, exhaust only has a cam. Given Stellantis stellar reputation on electronics; this looks like a recipe for disaster, quick connects are minuscule to this engineering feat. Hornet may surpass Vega as the worst production car.
They are fun to drive and different. But no buy. Get around 10 grand off and lease it. That would be the only way I would do it.
Budget in Denver Colorado gas a few in their fleet R/T'S. My wife and I have rented the Hornet twice and each time didn't have anything go wrong and have rented them for extended periods of time and put a serious chunk of miles on them with out issues and I'm hard on cars cuz I wanna get something reliable and it passed my beatings well
We absolutely wouldn't buy the Hornet.
Instead we bought a Compass with a 2.4 at 30k in price.
There was some on the lot at 60k.
Absolutely not.
We got a deal on the 2022 Compass. Basically half the price of a 2024 model.
Imagine that they doubled in price just in 2 years..lol
My '22 Challenger Scat Pack Shaker edition fully loaded was 1k mo. Id never in a million years pay that for a *Hornet!*
Will it take a Hemi?
Wait! Are you trying to tell me that people are actually buying the Hornet? At current prices? Holy cow. P.T. Barnum was right. At this point what can we do other than point and laugh?
This is just a really bad decision.... All they had to do was make a Cherokee SRT....
Once you're out of warranty, well, duh. Have the 2024 Hornet GT plus Track Pack option - no issues so far. The baseline Maserati this platform uses is $110K for what you get with the Hornet GT $33.5K. You tell me.
Good luck. I'm sure yours will be reliable...
Respectfully that's not true, I just dropped a load of hornets off @ Budget rental outside of BWI. We ran about 5 loads. They weren't happy to see them but are taking them.
Worst epic failure since the Edsel.
Cybertruck says hello
My neighbour bought the RT. It’s not that bad, I find. Interior has nice materials????
If Dodge wanted the Hornet to be reliable they should have had the Japanese build it.
The Japanese are good at 4 cylinders.
The Japanese are good with hybrids.
The Chinese are good at EV.
America is only good at big cars and big engines.
The hornet gt has been solid from everything I’ve seen
I am starting to get ads on Facebook for the Hornet advertising that they now have a new lower starting MSRP, and I haven't seen anyone talk about it yet. I'm no expert but usually manufacturers don't lower the MSRP on vehicles if it's selling.
They should just license the barra and add DI to it.
The reason the rental companies are not buying these clunkers is because they are not getting enough discount or guaranteed buy backs. There is a 370 day supply of the Hornets!!! The 3.6 has a real problem with the plastic oil coolers, we sell used cars only; I have been in the business 52 years. Any Service Advisor who is honest with you has another job lined up.
Alfa Romeo Toe Nail.
At this rate the Hornet will overtake the Yugo as the butt of automotive jokes.
I’d rather take a well maintained OG K car on a road trip over a Hornet.
At least if the K car gives me problems I can cheaply and easily fix it.
OH MY !!
The first clue should have been the brand name. Only a fool would buy one.
Please stop calling Nissan CVT crap. They were. Now they are the same as a Subaru. Since 2021 the issue is fixed. Thank you.
I don't like dodge but name me a 25k crossover
A Mustang has a more spacious rear seat!🤣🤣
Check this out , I did a build on dodge web site , the R/T PLUS , price is stupid ridiculous.
Went to Ford lol , mustang plus GT, just about the same price , WOW a muscle car and a V-8 too.
What a deal , I had a scat pack challenger love the car sold it a year later for more then what I paid for it just before everything feel apart like now lol
Dodge is DIEING A SLOW DEATH LOL
goes to show the king was the HEMI , RIP DODGE
Chrysler has had quality control issues for decades now. They have had issues long before the company was bought by FIAT back in the 2009 time frame. They have yet to learn their lesson in quality. Quality and reliability is just one reason Stelantis has been unable to sell vehicles. Stelanits has been unable to compete in the mid-size and compact car market. I don't see them doing any better in the compact SUV market. They are trying to compete with the CR-V, RAV4, Rogue, as well at the Tuscon and Sportage. They are trying to use performance as a selling point in a market that is looking at other things like cargo capacity and comfort. These are vehicles that are marketed as grocery and family haulers. Nobody is going to be going to the racetrack with one of these. That is just not where the demographic is. The way that Chrysler/RAM?Dodge is losing money I would not be surprised to see these brands sold off.
No body is buying them any way it's a Alfa Romeo car they put a dodge name on it I'm glad because if this sells they will start to give us more European car that they just put a dodge name on it
Dodge and Chrysler are on its death bed.
It’s overpriced, and has a three cylinder turbo.💸💥
I don’t mind spending more for something that will last. 😐
But this is a formula for just flushing money down the toilet. 🚽
BMW suck just as bad.
It is better than my Fiat 500. Now I own two great cars. And yes, I voted for a great president. Joe Biden.
You got issues 😂
Why should anyone be surprised about the quality? When has Alpha Romeo been known for quality? Same car.
I wouldn’t buy a Dodge period. Chargers, Hellcats, Durango’s, all those vehicles are junk
agreed and they charge bmw prices for that fiat/stellantis crap
I have a 2024 R/T hybrid version with 3300 miles. It’s currently in the shop with some sort of electrical issue. Would not start even with a jump pack. So thankful it’s only a 2 year lease.
They went from "the minivan company" to thinking everyone needed an overpriced performance vehicle.
Fail.
that wasn't even THAT bad, but they did that and are now discontinuing said vehicle....lol
Dodge was always the performance arm of Chrysler motors. Plymouth was the "minivan" and economy arm. Chrysler was the luxury arm. Each branch had vehicles of all types, but the BEST performance cars were Dodge, the MOST luxurious were Chrysler, and the most economical were Plymouth. All car companies used to follow this model, which was actually started by GM back in the 30s or 40s. I was a Dodge salesman back in the mid 80s, right about the time companies began "checkerboarding" - which means giving exclusive models to each branch instead of having three different versions of the same car.
Almost one year with the Hornet 2.0 engine. Only issue was software related. It runs fine. I did buy the Mopar maxcare just in case😂
Seems like the 2.0 is the way to go
Im currently at 20K miles and had 0 issues on my Hornet GT
@@mcnuggetapple the 2.0 is fine, stay away from the hybrid!!
I have the R/T plus and thank god it’s been going good
You just have to take care of it. I’m making sure to stay on top of maintenance. The hybrid is pretty good I get good gas mileage and it’s fun to drive daily.
@@jc10032 I have the GT… love it so far, she’ll be hitting 10k this year probably :) (I did get it used and it had a computer replacement and reprogram done at 3k miles according to the CarFax)
My local Avis has about six or seven Hornet R/T's on-hand. I rented one for the weekend and it was great.
At that price, a Mazda CX70 PHEV is a bargain at ~$555/mo....
And that's not the only Mazda, or the only vehicle in that price range. There are many other better options.
@@MaverickPhantomwhat’s wrong with Mazda?
@@MaverickPhantom I have had two Mazdas and imo especially now they are built as well or better than Toyotas. . Their vehicles are fun.
I am a recently retired lifelong mechanic. I have worked on some of the worst "cars" out there, The Hornet is much worse than any of them. Yes, you know any Ford ecoboost engine or any CVT is going to fail at very low mileage. That's a given. There are a LOT of other examples. But the Hornet is far worse. The Hornet powertrain is a nightmare straight from hell. I've watched several videos about it, done by mechanics. I'm still having a hard time believing anyone could have designed anything like that. If you just have to have a car called "Hornet" buy a Hudson Hornet or an AMC Hornet. Either will be several times more reliable than this POS. The AMC Hornet is an absolute tank.
Any "hybrid" car is going to have hybrid issues. And anyone dumb enough to buy one deserves what they get. Anyone that does not know enough about cars to know better than to buy a hybrid should probably not be buying a car.
I didn't know what was worse. The Avenger or the Hornet. I rented the Avenger. Complete pile of garbage. I couldn't wait to return it at the end of the week.
Now Stelantis brings us the Hornet. Another vehicle that more than likely will have a birthday before it leaves the dealer lot.
You can affirm that STELLANTIS only manufactures trash. Am I right or am I right?!
Dodge has gone down hill bad. I've worked on them for years.
I’ve been with Chrysler for over 22 years and there isn’t currently a quality vehicle built by them. The Grand Wagoneer has the same quality of the Hornet. It is terrible across the board.
My son had 8 dodges. He had problems with 6 transmissions. I have never had a transmission problem in my life. I’m 73. Never owned a dodge.
I'm glad you posted this. Some nit wit on YT bought a Hornet and was mad at me for mentioning TFL's video where they lite up dash lights on a new Hornet by doing some kind o f AWD test.
Did you ever watch the follow up video? That was a glitch from the way the test was done putting the car in a scenario that would most likely never happen but dodge has addressed it anyway
I have to say the Hornet isn't a terrible car. Looks good and it is comfortable. Not buying one due to reliability, but it looks nice.
I think it's kind of a joke that you are critiquing your car that you've never even driven, running it right into the ground
I test drove two of them, they handle and drive great they're a nice little car.
But they are overpriced
I'm so concerned about maintenance issues and value in the future, that I forgot about it and bought the new Camry hybrid instead.
The cars you are saying would be a good substitute or at least as much or more than the hornet none of them get more than 11 mi to the gallon and they haven't even made them since 2023 Dodge has to move into the future because of emissions it's not personal to you
My 2024 Hornet RT has been in the shop for over 2 months…. Numerous check engine lights, 300 amp fuse replaced and then now waiting till sometime at the end of July for a replacement hybrid battery and wiring. My wife misses her car.
While you continue to make payments.
I agree totally with you, its a 25k car
I will never buy Dodge, Japanese all the way.
It’s a Dodge…enuf said…lol
Stellantis is destroying Dodge from the inside while making it look like they’re not. Reminds me of someone in the White House.
Great analogy....
nailed it. FJB.
$1000 per month??? These are available all day every day for under $300/month. Less than Honda CRV, which is the way it should be, honestly.
Check out the Car Care Nut's review of the Hornet RT. The cooling system is very complex, and must transport coolant rearward to the motor on the rear axle. The only Hornet that makes sense is the base GT, which is advertised now in TX for around $28,000 after discounts. It is still well equipped, and hopefully more reliable than the RT.
Who on Earth would buy that overpriced POS? Oh! I know! No one! 💩 😷
They’e too expensive for fleet sales, being what it is. CVT Nissans are a dime a dozen and are perfectly adequate for anybody who needs the cheapest possible rental. For the price the Hornet would have to be a premium rental.
There is a different issue that will be making the Hornet difficult to sell. There are so many issues with them many banks will not finance them.
Dodge products are bad enough without adding the hornet to the mix Dodge needs to fold up and let ford and chevy take over
I want an overpriced, unreliable car that the dealer wont stand behind. Any ideas?
When has the first year model of anything has been great besides Japanese vehicles?
Hornet is a throw away car after 2 years, typical Stallantis junk.
Glad I got the Kona N sounds like the Hornet is going to fall like the Dart did.
That's a great selling tactic.....
Agreed. And help me, where is Kuniskis regarding all of this?
Gone!
Curb weight 3,715 to 4,140 lbs needs at least a V6 to last.
...and a different manufacturer!
