- This video explains all of the functionality of the latest version of Samsung Magician, including demonstrations of most of the important features. It also explains the context and background for the important features so that you will understand why you should choose certain settings based on your situation.
Samsung Magician is free disk management software for Samsung SSDs, including SATA SSDs and PCIe NVMe SSDs. It is very useful for checking the health and performance of your drives, along with changing configuration settings and doing firmware updates.

Good! It is pretty likely that your Samsung 990 Pro will need a firmware upgrade, depending on how long it was in the warehouse/on the shelf at the store, etc.
Berry, I have installed Samsung 970 evo plus ssd on my dell laptop. And install the magician software as you did.
But when I click the overprovisioning tab it gives me two options,
1. Clear OP (it was set defalut )
2. Set OP
my question is that, Did the software do some with my ssd drive with Clear OP. In fact what is that 'clear OP'.

Thanks for the vid. Very informative! But do you need to run Magician in the background because I notice it starts with PC and doesn't show up as Start Up Option in the Task Manager.
By default, it loads into the System Tray in Windows when Windows starts up. If you double-click on the Magician icon, the program comes into the foreground.

I think you are correct. I personally avoid NAND SSDs that don't have any RAM. They are not much less expensive, and you give up quite a bit of performance in exchange.
@@GlennBerrySQL Ya I didn't realize the Samsung 980 Didn't have NAND until after I bought second one Because it Over Heated Cloning my WD 512 SSD to the 1TB 980 thru the USB-C 3.1 port. when using the USB A 2.0 it cloned first time.and stayed Cool. Thanks for Both Answers.
From some reason the ssd I had with my prebuilt won’t transfer over all my files that also has my windows 10 os on it to my Samsung nvme drive is it because the first one isn’t Samsung too
Hi..I just bought this Samsung 870 EVO 256Gb and notice in Samsung Magician that there is "Full Performance Mode" which will enable Rapid Status and Over Provisioning..My questions are :
1. should I use this "Full Performance Mode"?I only use this SSD for windows & progs, all my games are stored in HDD & NVME..
2. If I don't use the "full performance mode", will the DRAM Cache still functional?

I'm guessing the default is 10% over provisioning always? I have a 860 evo 500 gb and my performance optimizations is different says full performance mode, standard mode and power saving mode. I wish I remembered what it was default on, I believe it was on power saving mode cause it had OP on. I'm only bringing this up cause I turned it off to standard and was getting stuttering in all my games for the longest time like pretty bad too. I started trying to fix everything the ram, the cpu cooler, the bios updates. Just so many things but I finally got to the SSD and soon as I enabled OP from a little research all my stutters went away now. I played for like 3-4 hours no stutters today, that is just crazy to me glad I don't have to deal with that anymore though.
Hi. Please, could tell me how much is the difference between data written after going thought magician test? I got 970 evo plus 250 gb and after one test it shows 200 gb written data, I made 4 times test and now I got almost 1 tb written data. Magician 7.01, nvme 3.3 driver. Interesting thing is that crystal disc mark test costs only 5 gb of data
I don't have an exact answer to your question. It would depend on how large the test file was and how many test runs were done during each test. I have a hard time believing one test would write 200 GB of data, but maybe you are doing nine test runs with the largest test file size.
If you are worried about writing too much data (which will "wear out" the NAND more quickly) you should do fewer runs with a smaller test file. The 250GB 970 EVO Plus has a warranty of 150 TBW.

Hey, I just got a 970 Evo Plus, after putting it in the m.2 slot, do I have to first go to the Samsung website and download the driver or do I need to install Magician first?
Your 970 EVO Plus drive will work with the stock Microsoft NVMe driver from Windows 10, but it will be slightly faster with the Samsung NVMe driver (Version 3.3). You should download and install that Samsung NVMe driver.

That has nothing to do with Samsung Magician. Magician will show which NVMe driver that the SSD is using though. Magician will work whether or not you have the Samsung NVMe driver installed.

hi sir, I installed ssd 980 pro pcie 4.0 7000mb but when I test in my laptop gives me 3000 mb, but the another ssd gives me 6000mb. what is the problem!

Hello. HP omen ck323nw. Pic 4.0. Windows 11. I have a problem with the new Samsung 980 pro SSD. Empty disk. It works below half its capacity. As you can see in the picture, the nvme driver is missing (should be Microsoft as far as I know). Installing with the manager does not work (message that the drivers are up to date). Maybe someone had a similar problem?

It doesn't matter whether it is a desktop machine or a laptop machine. Whatever machine you install the 980 Pro in is where you would install Samsung Magician.
Hello, I have an HP laptop with MZNLN128HAHQ-000H1 Samsung PM871b Series 128GB TLC SATA M.2 2280 installed but Samsung Magician (latest version, same for BIOS and WIN10), says: "'N/A' is represented in 'Drive Health' " and of course none of optimizantion or diagnostics works as it says: "The selected drive does not support this feature". Please note that my BIOS does not let me activate ACHI mode as it dosen't have any menu for this and INTEL Rapid Storage Tech. is ON but no OPTANE devices. Any help? Thank you!
Samsung Magician usually doesn't detect OEM Samsung SSDs. A 128GB SATA SSD is not going to perform very well (compared to a larger capacity SATA SSD) no matter what you do.

I have the samsung 970 and this software will not detect it nor the crucial P5. The latest version 7 software does not show them. What do I do?
Well, this software is only for Samsung SSDs. It will usually detect other brand SSDs, but most of the functions won't work. That is by design.
I would try uninstalling Magician, rebooting your machine, and then reinstalling Magician. Unfortunately, I am not Samsung tech support, so I'm not going to be able to help you much beyond that.
Do you know what would cause the 970 Evo Plus and 870 Evo SSD to not show in Samsung Magician? Only the stock 512GB NVMe shows up on this program. The Samsung 970 Evo Plus Nvme and the Samsung 870 Evo SSD show up under storage and I even have some video files in both of them but I do have each of them set as a single drive. I have the same 6.3 Magician software, I also have the latest drivers for both the 970 Evo Plus and 870 Evo. Just not sure what I am doing wrong. They work fine with the PC but just won't show up on Samsung magician.
Do you have the Samsung NVMe driver installed? The 970 EVO Plus should still show up without it, but that is one thing to check.

My computer is a Intel i9-9980hk NUC and I have 2 Nvme m.2 slots in it, 1 has the stock 512Nvme which has the OS and some other software and 970 evo plus has a few video files I put in it to see if everything worked fine and it seems like it is, it's even under a Letter (A) slot and the 4TB 870 evo SSD that I'm using for storage is under letter (B) I selected for it. They work great I just can't get samsung magician to see them. 😅
@@joseluisruiz3789 I have occasionally (over the years) seen Samsung Magician not recognize a Samsung SSD, or claim that it is not supported. There has never been a clear pattern that I recognized. Some things you might try:
1. Uninstall Samsung Magician, reboot and reinstall Samsung Magician
2. Check your storage-related BIOS settings to see if anything looks unusual (AHCI mode, SATA settings, NVMe mode, etc.)
3. If you have another system available try putting the drives in it (temporarily) to see if Magician sees them there
3a. This would let you check for and install any firmware updates they may need
I have the 970 evo and want to upgrade. I have windows and games on the 970 evo. How do I transfer all of the data to the new ssd (windows and all)
Samsung data migration tool is the simplest, but it has some drawbacks like files or programs that are open at the time of cloning may not be able to transfer. I recommend Macrium Reflect Free, its the best free cloning software. Its just for bit more advanced users. Still easy to use, its just you need to understand basics like partitioning a drive.
How old is your C drive in this video, in which you have written around 5 TB? I'm interested because I installed one on my PC a month ago and I've already written 1TB on it.
It was probably less than year old when the video was made. Writing 1TB in a month is really not that much. Personally, I would not worry about it at all.
If you are worried about it, you can also use CrystalDiskInfo to see the SMART information about what percentage of writes you have left. I would bet it still shows 100%, meaning it has not even gone down to 99% yet.

This free Samsung utility is designed for Samsung SSDs. If you have an SSD from another manufacturer, you need to use their utility (if they have one).

Does it show up in the BIOS and in Windows? Are you on Samsung Magician 8.0?
This will not work on my SanDisk but I find aomei backupper is almost suitable for all disks.
This free Samsung utility is designed for Samsung SSDs. It also has nothing to do with backups or cloning disks.

Does the 840 Evo does not support the Diagnostic Scan? - I get "the selected drive does not support this feature".
I don't have an 840 EVO to test, so I don't know. That model is not that old though.
strange on ofsite older version of app; and it hangs on startup after install with my old driver v1.1; but after install driver v3.3 and reboot it starts and advice update firmware and app version; hope it will help with my 950 pro with 25Tb writes and issues that start few weeks ago with hang on write some clusters - yes ssd old with > 27000 on hours but still 25Tb writes is more less then 400Tb of waanty..... looks like will try intel or back to kingston....
A Samsung 950 PRO is extremely old, and quite slow compared to newer model Samsung (and other brand) PCIe NVMe SSDs. New SSDs are extremely affordable now, so you might want to consider an upgrade.
@@GlennBerrySQL if compare to old good mlc ssd 950 pro don't provide visual perfomance on widows tasks etc; so think 950 pro to compare with 970-980 or new best one will not show a big impact in games; (maybe vs will compile few seconds faster but it's not so critical) - so will select new based on review about long life - price - middle performance; But still hope new firmvare and driver 3.3 will do some magic; aditional moved code/firefox and thund profiles to old seagate magnethic hdd - now will check how windows will go;
This is a nice video, however for me the magician software isn't displaying information on my Samsung SSD 870 QVO. When I hover over the exclamation mark next to the drive name, it says "SSD information could not be verified on the server. Please check proxy or other network settings." I don't know much about computers so I'm not very sure what "other network settings" could mean.
That error occurs when you don't have internet connectivity. Magician wants to connect to a server owned by Samsung to verify information about your Samsung SSD.

mine samsung 980 NVMe showing PCIGen 2 X 2 interface, is it because of motherboard interface or because of SSD will it effect performance?
It is either the M.2 slot or the motherboard that is throttling it down to x2
I tired this Magician software on the 840 series ssd and it corrupted the drive. Had to reinstall Windows!
I have never seen or heard of that happening.
BTW, the Samsung 840 PRO came out back in 2012.

Yes, Samsung Magician is a specialized tool made by Samsung to manage things like firmware updates for Samsung SSDs.
I've got 3 samsung evo drives that show me everything in magician but today i installed a samsung 860 DCT ssd and the program finds it but it won't show me drive health and tried to do performance optimization it says the selected drive does not support this feature
The Samsung 860 DCT is a data center drive, and Samsung Magician only supports retail consumer Samsung SSDs. Samsung has a separate Data Center tool, called the "Samsung SSD Toolkit for Data center"

What happens when we can see bad blocks in Diagnostic scan as full scan..!! I have 2 TB 870 EVO. Which is running the scan for 11 hours now, and still 15 hours left. I am able to see there are 8 red blocks in the scan. Could you please let me know what will happen when it complete the scan..!!

Your 870EVO should still be under warranty. I would contact Samsung for a replacement drive.
I have the Samsung SDD 870 QVO and when I open Samsung Magician everything shows Not Supported and on the Drive Health and Temperatures they all show N/A. Do you know the reason for it? Could my SDD be a defective one?
If the SSD were defective, it would not be working normally. I would try uninstalling and reinstalling Magician to see if that helps.

That is correct. I don't there will ever be any Samsung NVMe drivers for the 990 PRO

You should contact Samsung about that.
QUESTION: Why does Magician not look like this anymore? I downloaded it on 12-22-2023 from Samgung today. In the past, it looked like what you showed in the video. But now it sux and looks very cheap.

It sounds like you are running in PCIe 3.0 mode instead of PCI 4.0 mode.
What exact CPU and motherboard are you using? What M.2 slot are you using?
Some CPUs only support PCIe 3.0 and some motherboards only support PCIe 4.0 in some M.2 slots. A PCIe 4.0 SSD like the Samsung 980 Pro has to be running in a system with PCIe 4.0 support or else it will fall back to PCIe 3.0 speed.
Ur mobo or cpu is bottlenecking ur drive

That sounds like maybe you have a PCIe 4.0 capable drive in a PCIe 3.0 slot. If possible, you should move it to a PCIe 4.0 slot (if you have one in your system).

Interesting. I own a 980 Pro for about 2 years and the benchmark never worked. For some reason the internal 980 Pro 2TB was always identified as an external drives. That's sad. Looks like the other sizes of the 980 were way better.

I don't thinbk there is any way to change the colors in the application. Samsung just released Magician 8.0, which uses a white color scheme.

@@GlennBerrySQL when you first time open software Samsung magician, how long it took you load information? I have SAMSUNG MZVLB1T0HBLR-00007 and its 2 hours scanning for drive information. I dont know if i have the right SSD that read this software, but i need some software to control disk (find out if servis gave me new disk or repase...)
@@0150koudy It should only take a few seconds to scan your disk. You should use something like CrystalDiskInfo to check out whether your SSD is new or not.
Why can't Samsung magician read a Samsung 980 SSD in a Sabeant Enclose connected to a USB-C 3.1 pout on my ASUS GL701VSK laptop with a 1TB 980 as the Boot SSD & a 1 TB HDD that magician can Identify but not read?
You would have to ask Samsung that.
If you put a Samsung SSD in an external USB enclosure, there is often a UISB to NVMe or SATA converter chip that obscures the hardware details of the SSD.
Sadly i had to migrate my Intel Optana480 to my 980pro once more after upgrading the firmware on the 1tb samsung disk trough the Macigan application (Blue Screen )🥶

Probably not, since that is an OEM model.

Obviously it is possible. What CPU and motherboard do you have? What M.2 slot on the motherboard are you using? Do you have the latest BIOS version for your motherboard?

I have seen at least one 500GB Samsung 980 Pro that also had gimped sequential write performance.

@@N3xusStrike If there is a firmware update available, Samsung Magician will let you know, and it will let you update the firmware. You can also enable full power mode from the Performance Optimization section.

The main reason to run Magician is to periodically check for new firmware updates and check the health of your Samsung SSDs. If you think you will remember to do that once in a while, then you don't need to have it start automatically every time Windows starts.

It uses some RAM on your machine as a read cache for frequently accessed data.

That sounds like a Samsung OEM model that is not supported by Magician

Samsung states " Full Power Mode allows the SSD to run at peak level (PS0) for nonstop consistent performance"
Modern SSDs support different power states, and PS0 has the lowest entry and exit latency, and the highest power usage.

I would try uninstalling Magician, and reinstalling, making sure you have the latest version.
Beyond that, you should contact Samsung for technical support of their product.
My SSD cannot move data anymore or be copied on it :(

@@TheMaan2008 NAND Flash SSDs have a finite write life, after which they become read-only. This normally takes many years of very hard usage before that happens. If you have actually burned out a modern SSDs with writes you might be a Chia miner.

@@TheMaan2008 I don't know what you are talking about. If your SSD is read-only because you have worn it out from too many writes, you should be still able to copy any data on it to another drive. You won't be able to move it, just copy it.

@@ajohn4320 By all means, use whatever tool(s) you like. Samsung Magician is a specialized tool made by Samsung for Samsung SSDs, so it doesn't need to be compatible with anything else.

@@ichikibun Well, it may be related to your BIOS settings for your storage. For example, AHCI mode vs. RAID mode. I would caution you that if you don't know what you are doing with those BIOS setting you can break your system or lose all of your data, so be careful.

That is a rarely used feature for consumer SSDs. Why do you think you want to use it?
Most people who actually need/want to use OP can figure out how to enable it from the Samsung Magician GUI.
@@GlennBerrySQL Unfortunately it doesn't work anything as it should and as i thought. And the funny thing is that i am an experienced computer user. Why i think i need it? Because i need better performance. The SSD is not remarkable faster than my old HDDs. It takes ages for my apps to open, just as with my HDDs (more or less).
@@PlanetIscandar SSD overprovisioning is not going to make applications open faster. It can help write performance a little, and help durability, but it does not help SSD read performance. Even a low-end SATA SSD should be significantly faster to open an application than any magnetic hard drive.

@@GlennBerrySQL Now i bought a 2TB Samsung 990Pro. And guess what: OP worked fine, until i bitlocked one partition. Now OP stopped working. Message: "At least one of your drives is locked." This is a headache...
Answer: I deleted the decryption key from my system, that's why. Now i fixed it and OP is working fine again.

Samsung Magician doesn't do data migration. That is not what the tool is designed or used for. Samsung has a completely separate tool for Data Migration.

You should talk to Samsung about that.
Samsung does not support consumers! There is no ssd MZ7TE512HMHP-00004 support in the Magician application!
They support retail versions of their SSDs, not OEM versions.
