Vera never like Emily I think it's funny how Emily was able to stand up to Vera and wasn't affaird of her, being a good Christian women I wonder if Emily allowed herself to acutely hate Vera. Or just thought she was a lost cause.
I remember how she liked calling her ‘Emily Twin-set’ in the factory days! I think Vera’s character just wouldn’t be tolerated in this woke world we’re now living, her brash gobbiness would make her basically the Devil Incarnate nowadays! I can imagine an outpouring of “get her off screen” tweets if it had been today lol!
She’s basically having a go at Emily for being old fashioned as “twinset and pearls” was a fashion from the 40s. This explains it better….. “The pairing of a lightweight cardigan over a lightweight crewneck pullover, was known as a "twinset". More often the two garments would be in a plain matching colour although this woman, to be less formal and more individual, wears a striped pullover and knots her pearls. . The fashion came to Britain from the USA. The pastime of handknitting was at its zenith at its most popular and large numbers of Twinset knitting patterns were sold. The phrase "Twinset and pearls" came to define women who never abandoned this style as "smart casual" wear.

Certainly, Corrie was a series placed in a matriarchal setting from the beginning but the endless negative comments about men do get tiresome. If you were being generous you'd say it was lazy thinking on the part of the writers (is dismissing a gender or any other group in society a sign of intelligent writing?) but more likely it was just hacks determined to put the boot into men for whatever reason. It would have been equally fatuous and regarded today as outrageously sexist if there had been constant criticism of women in the Street over the decades, however very little is said about this aspect of the series. Other posters have mentioned the pointlessness of the banger racing 'plot' and it seems to have been set up purely to show what a great driver Sally was.
